I’m not sure that is a very helpful comment.
I think it might be more reassuring to note that such terrorist attacks in recent years have not been followed in quick succession by other attacks, that there will be massively increased security measures in Brussels now, but that anyone who feels unsafe is certainly entitled to move out of the area.

No, because that will not alleviate the fear. You could sit down with someone who is afraid of flying and carefully explain why their flight is safer than the car ride to the airport, but don’t be surprised if the fear of flying remains.
By all means point out reassuring facts, but alleviating fear is more complex than that. Showing concern, giving helpful advice and suggesting options is not ‘pandering’.

The daughter had already been to Dinner by Heston, so didn’t want to do it again.
So we went out to Daylesford for lunch at Lake House Restaurant (Alla Wolf-Tasker’s place).

Thanks for the tip about Lake House Restaurant. I’m not a foodie type (clearly) and hadn’t previously heard about this restaurant. I’ve put it on the to-visit list for next time I’m passing through Melbourne.

I’ve said this many times: I come to Kiwiblog to be entertained and informed – in that order. I say “in that order” because the useful information is often drowned out by the sound of bickering. I don’t have an issue with you personally, but you seem to be taking something I said personally. You may have misunderstood the “transgender cop” reference if you haven’t been reading Kiwiblog much over the past few weeks – it’s a general joke that gets thrown around and isn’t aimed at anyone in particular (see Stigie’s comment above – it’s all intended to be harmless banter). But, having said all that, it’s up to you how you want to move forward.

Further developments in the Brussels situation:

The two suicide bombers who carried out the Brussels Airport attacks were brothers Khalid and Brahim El Bakraoui, Belgium public broadcaster RTBF said, quoting an unnamed source.

Khalid, under a false name, had rented the flat in the Forest borough of the Belgian capital where police killed a gunman in a raid last week, RTBF said.

After the raid, investigators found an Islamic State flag, an assault rifle, detonators and a fingerprint of Paris attacks prime suspect Salah Abdeslam, who was arrested three days later.

Both brothers have criminal records, but have not been linked to terrorism by police until now, RTBF said.

It’ll be interesting to see if these guys were legally entitled to live in Brussels. Presumably they were, if one of them was able to rent a house.

Alla Wolf-tasker is a star… and has been for over 30 years. She has specialised in using local produce. In contrast to the Michael Hill/Arrowtown posting a couple of days ago….. Wolf-tasker and her hubby have been the making of a dying country town….. Other businesses… cafes/ crafts/ B&Bs/ 2nd-hand junk shops have set up in Daylesford since she started up Lake House. She’s become involved with the local community and tourists of all types are catered for in the township. (You don’t have to stay at the posh spas).

A new study shows heavy marijuana use over several years was associated with structural differences in at least two different regions of the brain, the hippocampus and amygdala.

Researchers found that the hippocampus, which is thought to regulate memory, was an average of 12% smaller among marijuana users, compared with people who didn’t smoke pot. The amygdala, involved in emotion and memory, was an average of 7% smaller.

The study also suggests that long-term marijuana users were more likely to report symptoms associated with mental disorders, although the strength of their symptoms didn’t meet the criteria for diagnosis of mental illness.

In the study, researchers used high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging to compare the brain structure of 15 men who smoked more than five joints of marijuana daily for more than 10 years with images from 16 men who did not smoke pot.

The participants also took a verbal memory test and were evaluated for symptoms of mental disorders.

The results showed men who smoked pot regularly had significantly lower brain tissue volumes in the hippocampus and amygdala areas, as well as more symptoms of mental disorders.

Researchers say marijuana users also performed significantly worse on the verbal learning test, but these differences did not correlate with brain volumes in either group.
