Reid, this article about George Seldes is very interesting and it’s not as though there is a shortage of material on the net. about the crusading journalist . Most of his books can still be purchased on Amazon . He lived to 104 and said faithful to his wife for 50 years . Seldes was one the of the earliest to publicise the causal link between Cancer and smoking. A taboo subject for most US media at the time. Sure he was largely ignored by the media but as one critic noted he wanted all the media to publish exactly what he thought . He also exposed the mask behind Mussolini and we learn the irony that the New York Post was one of the few in the US that dared publish the truth about the Spanish Civil War. Most were pro Franco .

However I doubt very much he would of survived under Stalin or Hitler . He was not one to tow any partly line .

Yes stephie, he seems like an interesting man, I hadn’t heard of him before today. It’s amazing who pops up from history, repeating the same old things thus proving the same threads run through regardless. It’s a shame people aren’t more aquainted with the mores of the times they analyse, when they analyse them. If we were, perhaps we wouldn’t make the same interpretational mistakes we make, quite so often.

But of course, these days, most people are more interested in the latest fascinating sport news, or celeb goings-on. They’re much more important, apparently.

I hope you’ve bought up your children to be more discerning that your average RadioNZ, NewstalkZB, TV whatever listener/viewer/consumer/whatever.

The last thing the world needs is more obedient consumers, lockstep marching toward a world they’ve had no say in designing and less interest in so doing, because of the computer game that so fascinates, at the mo.

Trump has, in the Republican primary, proven largely immune to the backlash that the laws of gravity in politics would predict, but there are also suggestions that he has a deep problem with some women voters: 68% of women voters held an unfavorable view of Trump in a Quinnipiac poll released in December. In a Gallup poll also released in December, Trump had the lowest net favorable rating out of all the candidates among college-educated Republican women. And should he win the nomination, his comments are sure to become ammunition for Democrats against what they have long cast as a Republican “war on women.”

Trump has a history of making crude remarks toward women. He reportedly said of his ex-wife Marla Maples, “Nice tits, no brains,” and more recently, he has called Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly a “bimbo” and a “lightweight” and said she had “blood coming out of her wherever” during the first GOP debate.

The focus of Trump’s attentions when interviewed by Stern was commonly female celebrities — movie and television stars, recording artists, models, and media personalities.

Trump, in more than one instance, expressed his admiration for and attraction to Diana, Princess of Wales.

There is no support in that Nature link for denialists or for any contradiction to the AGW hypothesis.

The basic formula, as I’m sure you know, is that when energy in minus energy out, in a defined system, is a positive number greater than zero, then increased heat is the inevitable result.

That’s exactly what is happening in the formerly balanced (in the long, long, run), planet Earth atmospheric system.

The research is about finding out where the heat locates, and its effects, both current and potential.

Anything else is white noise, useful for sleeping but little else.

The hot spot which is part of the warming theory is not being observed in the lower Troposphere. (RSS and UAH series)Even Gavin Schmidt has admitted in a tweet lately that the lack of this disproves the theory.

Rubbish. Maggy is just giving the other side of the argument, one also supported by climate scientists. As she herself said, the science is disputed, thus it is not settled.

If you had read my 5:21 post you’d realise I’m in the same boat as practically everyone else…
I came into this climate debate on KB when NIWA had a run-in with some folk who wanted to know what methods NIWA employed to calculate NZs warming over the last century.

NIWA has never published the method used and for some time delayed proceedings by referring the querying folks to a PhD thesis held in the closed stack at Vic Uni. That thesis dated from the early 1980s – same time that my hubby’s PhD and my PhD were presented…. but as far as I know everone’s thesis now has been digitized and are available online….. I couldn’t figure out why the public weren’t able to get easy access to a 30 yr old thesis.

NIWA has still not published in a peer -reviewed scientific paper the method it employs to calculate NZ’s temperature warming over the last 116 years.

Also “genuine” is purely subjective. Maggy has posted the view of 300 scientists who do not agree with the IPCC. Trotting out “genuine” vs “pseudo” is not a fact based argument, but an appeal to prejudice and subjective opinion.

I don’t presume to know better than any climate scientist….
However I can read the current scientific literature and I would refer you to my earlier postings today 1:05pm

There’s links to 300 scientific papers published in the last year or so that don’t accord with the IPCC view on AGW.

.. I’m just letting folks know that a whole bunch of scientists are studying a variety of different factors that may or may not have a bearing on Earth’s climate.

There is now a body of literature on natural variation and climate change…. a field that has been neglected by the IPCC for 25 years.

Things seem to be getting a bit tense in here so I will take some of the heat for a while by saying that even if global warming is true I think it is going to have a good side because finally all those filthy little atolls in the Pacific which are overpopulated and downright grotty will finally get a bit of a wash and a scrub up, something which has been required for quite a while.

Seymour has been following Donald Trump and think he can say what he want without engaging his brain. People – the Earth is a dynamic evolving system – it changes over time.

This is something that cannot be changed or stopped even if it is deemed by some to be desirable to do so

And anyone who thinks our political chattering classes can do anything to control it is frankly bonkers – they are for the most parts airheads who are good at talking but cannot even deal with everyday human problems like violence against children or kids leaving school after 12 years of education functionally illiterate

wrt this week’s Nature Climate Change paper on the hiatus/slowdown

The significance of this paper is that most of its authors are IPCC authors.
Before the Paris conference the “consensus” was that the hiatus didn’t exist (based on one paper by Karl et al , 2015, NOAA)

This paper is singing a different story… saying that there was a slowdown in global climate during the period when CO2 levels kept on increasing.
Anyway…. doesn’t look like settled science to me…

Suggest you look at CFCs (ozone layer hole) for a real example.

That was a con Brigitte – I know it is accepted wisdom but the so called ozone hole was undetectable by science until the seventies and so there is no knowledge of how it behaved prior to this!

Like every system on this planet its size varies depending on the time of year and its greatest extent for any year varies from year to year

Years when it is large the chicken littles have a field day wailing doom and years when it is small the chicken littles cite it as a success story for Government control of the climate – the old heads I win tails you lose arguments deployed by would be climate interventionists

Meanwhile we use more expensive chlorine contain compounds in place of CFCs and the chemical company shareholders enjoy bigger dividends

“My biggest concern is that facts don’t change (that’s not the concern – the climate facts are though). And the only party with climate change policies is the Greens. Think about what that means when we need to do something about climate change. We should be making business friendly climate change policies. Perhaps ACT might just come to the party.”

The Greens are the last party that I’d want running the country (ok, of those in parliament).

Most people live and most industrial activity occurs in the Northern Hemisphere

And yet the Arctic Ozone hole is much smaller than the Antarctic one – the Antarctic which just happens to be centered over the most volcanic region on earth which is also the least studied one (for logistical reasons)

Maggie, yes t he ozone layer declined after a big jump in recovery in 2012. Still a lot better than the minimum and still seems to be recovering albeit slowly.

Viking your opinion is shared by a few high profile people in the media. You all are entitled to that opinion even if it is not right or logical. I do not know what is in the report and I assume the only ones who know are those in government and Bain fan club who are probably the ones leaked the report. The government has the discretion to reject compensation and the saga will not go on forever.

However, while it is okay for anyone particularly anonymous individuals to say we just pay him to shut him and his supporters up it is not okay for the leader of a party in Parliament to suggest such a payout without any sort of process. I quote Seymour from his FB page below.

The report says compensate so the government finds a former Aussie judge who’d previously been investigated in connection with abuse of court process to write a new report.

In one sentence he attacks the integrity of at least one Cabinet Minister and the Judge from Oz who has been paid about $400k of taxpayer’s money to write the report. He suggests we bin the report and just oil the squeaky wheel with Other Peoples Money. I thought the reason ACT was formed was about speeding other peoples money and he says pays some by Seymour’s own words may be one of New Zealand’s worse mass killers.

I suggest Seymour get in touch with Mike Hosking and a few others and start a Givealittle page for Bain.

Viking, if the government decides not to pay Bain anything how will it cost the taxpayer?

ACT is now somewhat like Trump and his fan club. He can do anything and they will support him. The difference is that Trump will probably be the GOP candidate. ACT is destined to have one MP until National is not in power and then ACT will be history.

You mentioned Bay iwi. Should any payment be decided on the amount of noise they make or pressure from the Maori Party or on the merits of their claim?

I don’t see anywhere in either link that claim being made which is not surprising because its not true – though the ozone hole size varies according to the season so the Arctic hole will be at its maximum extent when the Antarctic is at its minimum roughly speaking

There is also an ozone hole that forms over Tibet and they have been observed over volcanic eruptions like Pinatubo

Where they are not seen is over regions of large industrial activity which if it was mankind really responsible is where you should see them you would think

In any case there is no data before 1979 so there is no way of knowing how they behaved before the advent of industrial chlorine chemistry

Andrei, never mind the cause at this stage the facts there is an Arctic Ozone hole about the same size as the southern one . Contrary to your claims NASA has a reasonably good idea what caused them if you take the trouble and look for them in the link.

Could you link your claim about Tibet ?
