On the contrary – they always have and always will. Just ask the guy who exclaimed, “Who will rid me of this turbulent priest!”.

The church, as with the example of the Salvation Army’s comments on child poverty a few days ago, has a duty to act as a “prophet”, holding the king/Caesar to account for the spiritual and ethical consequences of his decisions. What shouldn’t happen though, is the privileging of one religion at the expense of others…or those of no religion. Or the installation of Ayatollahs running the state.

As Catholics enjoy no such privilege in the USA…the Pope can say what he wants. It is up to American Catholics…and non-Catholics for that matter to, to do what they want with his comments, be it regard them highly, ignore them, or treat them with scorn and contempt.

Am I the only one who is tired of watching the prizes for the “best of everything” McCaw and the All Blacks in the lauding media.

Surely for the New Zealander of the Year there must be many other more worthy people – mostly unknown outside the media myopia putting our country on the world scale.

I can accept sports awards once a year but McCaw for everything – getting engaged, wedding next, retiring from All Blacks and the captaincy. I suppose it helps prop up the women’s magazines.

I suppose once again I can confess – I do not like professional Rugby – good schoolboy is great to watch, but we go overboard with professional Rugby – we even have a racially orientated part Maori All Blacks – but can understand that perhaps as the real All Blacks is full of Pacific Islanders.

No, because (as I understand it), they are granted tax exempt status for the same reason as incorporated societies and other non-religious groups such as the Red Cross, etc, who exist primarily to do charitable/non-profit work.

But if Caesar wants to change the rules, and remove the tax exempt status for churches…and everyone else, fair enough.

Perhaps because Apple went out of it’s way to keep us safe by making it very unfriendly to hackers is one of it’s best assets.
Apple says if the iPhone detects hacking attempts it erases all it’s memory, it was designed that way. If they put a ‘back door’ access in, then the Genie is out of the bottle and once discovered Apple would not be able tot stop people hacking iPhones.

I think Apple are right here.

The pope has a right to his own POV. However, the problem arises when he opens his mouth on any topic, it becomes public, and is interpreted in the wider secular world that this is what the Catholic Church believes – which is not correct.

This pope – I guess becuase he is Latino – says a lot of things off the cuff which get misinterpreted, and then his staff at the Vatican have to scramble over each other to put the proper spin on it. He is not like previous popes who were careful what they said publicly to ensure that there was no chance of misinterpretation.

Catholics have their own view on secular matters and do not need to parrot what this pope says, and he was wrong to condemn The Donald for not being Christian. I agree with Trump when he said that the Mexican govt have told him things purely from their own perspective, and have used the pope to pedal their own line.

I agree with Trump and others who want to build a wall on the southern border. It has actually been on the US Fed Govt books for many years – its just that Bush and Obama have done nothing about it.

Kimbo’s comment is on the button, but Lucia, I think you are wrong about Trump, even though I would rather see Cruz or Rubio as president. Trump has changed the dynamics in the US political scene, for the better.

Just a technical note on iPhones for Inandout. What the FBI needs is for Apple to provide a special version of iOS for the specific iPhone 5C in question. That phone has settings (standard ones) that allow three immediate attempts at a passcode, a 2 minute delay after the fourth failure, 5 minutes after 5 and (I think) 1 hour after 6. So brute forcing even a 4 digit number is slow slow slow. Those limits can be changed….once you have the passcode. After 10 attempts the phone has to be restarted (after the hour) to start again. This is set in iOS, now a new version could be loaded on a 5C but the phone checks and refuses any updates that are not digitally signed by Apple, so without Apple’s secure key new software cannot be loaded.

Some of this changes if the phone has been “jail-broken”, but apparently this one hasn’t.

So Apple can enable a faster search for the password by uploading a software version that allows immediate re-tries of the code without imposed elays.

No on models after the 5 (the 5C is a rehoused 5 in a plastic case) such as the 5S and 6 models use a much moire secure scheme; the pass codes etc are stored on the phone in a “secure enclave” that is part of the A7 and later chips. When such a phone is first started it generates a essentially random key which combines with a hardware UID for the device which Apple DOES NOT record and encrypts everything using this generated key. It is still possible for Apple to re-write a special version of iOS and upload it to such a phone that would allow unlimited brute force testing of codes though not as easily as with the 5C model. However if the user chose an alphanumeric code with > 8 characters that wasn’t an existing word subject to dictionary attack, then brute forcing becomes unfeasible. Most users wouldn’t, but security conscious users might.

Apple cannot access the pass codes, but can potentially make it possible for the FBI to attempt to brute force any code more simply. Also, the concept of dis-assembling the iPhone and extracting the flash storage for independent cracking has the problem that the encryption key for the flash is very strong, at least 256 character, more likely a so far uncrackable 512 character (256 can theoretically be cracked in less than a year on the fastest available systems) and that key is determined by hardware settings on the phone. So you can’t find the simple 4 digit pass code just using the flash storage.

What Apple objects to is that if they are forced to crack one phone, the can be forced to crack any and all phones. Once a back-door exists, it will be exploited. I agree that Apple should refuse to help as a general principle.

Lance 8.41: First of all I am not an Apple worshipper, FGS it is just a bloody electronic device and some sad adherents virtually ejaculate at the thought of the next model to be released.

If there is information on that phone that can identify other assassins-in-waiting, then the families of those unfortunates already grieving for their loved ones slaughtered in that attack are due some consideration. It may be that Apple can’t access the phone anyway, but methinks all they are worried about is future sales, and keeping Applephiles happy. However in the long run they may do their brand damage.

I’m no fan of Trump or the ridiculous idea of building a wall between the US and Mexico, but this is obviously a manufactured story. The media fed the pope some version of Trump’s policy and got him to respond that it didn’t sound very Christian. Then they get to run a big headline: ‘Pope says Trump is not Christian’. Assuming the Pope is Catholic, a reporter could do the same with the Democrats’ position on abortion if they wanted to, but they don’t.

How does Karam know “the National Party” has access to the report?
Why would David Bain loose nearly all faith in Adams unless he knew she leaked the report?

What does Karam say of the WhaleOil theory that Karam is the leak since he and Bain are the only ones to benefit from leaking an ‘unhelpful” decision, and so re-igniting the Binnie “court of public opinion”?

And is it not time that protection of media sources is subject to court examination of the “public interest” in such protected leaks – the presentation to the public of what is stolen confidential material without any apparent advantage to the public ?
Meaning – when the Herald print this type of leak, they have to justify it, showing why it is essential the public have the information at this point in time, or face prosecution for benefitting from criminal actions.

A very good question minus. Lets think about the nature of leaks for a moment. Leaks are usually made by people who see an advantage in doing so. Camp Bain had a copy of the report. The report recommends no compensation for Bain. A leak delivers no benefit to the Government (quite the opposite in fact – politically), but it muddies the process enough for Bain that he might just get yet another crack at the cherry.

Apologies for the spelling in that previous comment. Also note that there is a setting (optional) on iPhones that forces a complete deletion of all content after 10 failed attempts at accessing it. No way to tell if this phone has that setting enabled without either putting in the correct code or trying 10 times to see.

Also note that apparently this phone was backed up to iCloud regularly until 2 weeks before the massacre, and the FBI have those backups from Apple. This dispute is then over data added to the phone in the last 2 weeks only.

What Apple wants to fight is the precedent this sets. If it agrees, all iPhones will be subject to search by law enforcement on any pretext that a Judge wants to allow. The only solution will be for users to adopt secure pass phrases of at least 8 character length and to put up with any penalties imposed for refusing to reveal said pass phrase if such statutes exist. Penalties of course can’t be applied to deceased owners. I also think (IMHO of course) this is why the FBI is trying so hard in this context; this is a case where they hope to get wide-spread sympathy to obtain a precedent that they can then use in many more cases with more dubious justification.

No, because (as I understand it), they are granted tax exempt status for the same reason as incorporated societies and other non-religious groups such as the Red Cross, etc, who exist primarily to do charitable/non-profit work.

Although it might be more accurate to say that some incorporated societies and other non-religious groups have come to share the tax exempt status of churches?

As churches were once the sole and inclusive source of charity,

I will provide a brief summary and then send you to two detailed accounts.

The neoconservative Obama regime set-up the Syrian government headed by Assad for overthrow. A long propaganda campaign conducted in Washington’s behalf by the Western media portrayed the democratically-elected Assad as a “brutal dictator who uses chemical weapons against his own people.” Washington organized and supported a front group posing as democrats and involved them in conflict with the Syrian military.

With conflict underway, Washington began predicting that something had to be done to overthrow Assad before he used “chemical weapons against his own people.” Obama turned these predictions into a “red line.” When Assad used chemical weapons against Washington’s puppets, the US would invade Syria.

With the “red line” drawn, a false flag chemical weapons attack was staged, or an accident occurred, that Washington used to say that Assad, despite the US warning, had crossed the “red line.”

Preparations for an invasion began, but hit two roadblocks. David Cameron, Washington’s puppet prime minister of Great Britain was unable to deliver British support for the invasion as the Parliament voted it down. This left Washington uncovered and vulnerable to the charge of naked aggression, a war crime.

Russian diplomacy threw up the other road block by securing the removal of all chemical weapons from Syria.

Their invasion plan frustrated, the neoconservatives sent the jihadists they had used to overthrow Gaddafi in Libya to overthrow Assad. Initially known as ISIS, then ISIL, then the Islamist State, and now Daesh, a term that can be interpreted as an insult. Perhaps the intention of the name changes is to keep the Western public thoroughly confused about who is who and what is what.

Washington now pretends that it is fighting the Islamist State, but Washington is doing its best to frustrate the success of the Russian/Syrian alliance that is defeating the Islamist State..

Washington’s support of the Islamist State is the cause of the war in Syria. General Michael Flynn, the recently retired head of the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) has stated publicly that it was a “willful decision” of the Obama regime to support ISIS.

The neoconservative insistence that “Assad must go” comprises a threat to the security of Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Hezbollah is the Lebanese force that has twice defeated Israel’s attempt to annex southern Lebanon for its water resources. Hezbollah is dependent on Syrian and Iranian support for its arms and financing. Israel wants rid of Hezbollah.

The Islamic State that Washington is trying to create in Syria would provide Washington with a means of destabilizing Iran and Russia by exporting jihadism into those countries. The Russian Federation has Muslim populations as do former provinces of the Soviet Union that now cooperate with Russia. By bogging down Russia in internal conflicts, Washington can move Russia out of the way of Washington’s exercise of hegemony. Similarly, non-Persian populations in Iran could be radicalized by jihadism and used to destabilize Iran.

In order to protect themselves, Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah have come to the support of Syria.

Russian air power in support of the Syrian Army has turned the tide against the Islamist State.
The invaders are being driven out. The neoconservatives cannot accept this defeat.

Washington is preparing a Syrian invasion by Turkey and Saudi Arabia, the purpose of which is to split Syria in half with Washington controlling the eastern part with the oil fields.

Possibly this is a bluff to get Russia to accept a Syrian settlement less favorable to Russian, Iranian, and Syrian interests. However, the Russian government cannot risk that it is only a bluff. If a US/Turkish/Saudi force were to arrive first in Raqqa and Deir Ezzor, Syria would be dismembered.

The Russians can get there first by dropping in paratroopers. In other words, what the insane neoconservatives are doing is giving the Russian government a big incentive to introduce Russian ground troops into the conflict. Once those troops are there, you can safely bet that the insane neoconservatives will cause conflict between them and US/Turkish forces. A wider war will have begun from which neither side can back down.

The Russians are there legally at the invitation of the Syrian government. The US is there illegally.

I thought what Trump said about the Pope’s comments was pretty good. Trump is the only one who said he is going to destroy Isis and he is going to protect the Christians in the Middle East who even now are routinely being slaughtered and crucified by Muslim terrorists.

Trump has a lot of support from evangelicals and other Christians in the United States. Recently the senior pastor of Dallas first Baptist Church endorsed him.

Contrast this with the current president of the United States who seems to have no concern about what’s happening to the Christian community in the Middle East, whose most hearts blood cry is to apologise to the Muslims in America for Muslimophobia and who has been consistently the most anti-Christian “Christian” President in United States history.

Even George Bush didn’t seem to do anything to protect the Christians in the Middle East. When America invaded Iraq the plight of the Christians in Iraq became worse and worse.

So if Trump does what he says he will do and actually protects the Christians in the Middle East then he will be doing a great thing. And the Pope can feel free to comment on political matters as religious leaders are able to do, but in this situation he could be wrong.
