“On December 31, 2015, a mob of young Arab and North African men, perhaps as many as 1,000, assaulted, groped, harassed, and in some cases even raped European women in Cologne, Germany. It took almost a week for police to collaborate social media reports of the crime wave, and even longer for authorities to take much action. In the face of mounting criticism, the head of police resigned and Chancellor Angela Merkel faces unprecedented criticism for her open-door policy on immigrants. Now the story is spreading to Sweden, where police are being accused of covering up similar attacks by Muslim immigrants.

This is a nightmare situation for millions of people, including peaceful immigrants, the Europeans who opened their doors, and German politicians and police. And it is probably not over, because what is happening in Europe is a full-on cultural clash between convictions that are incompatible.

Blaming all immigrants is not the solution, nor is wholesale condemnation of German leaders. But people must realize that the cultural conflict simmering in Europe is not trivial. Good to see student unions have their priorities right. Rather than trying to make sure the student loan scheme is sustainable for future students they are instead scare mongering to protect criminals and bludgers who have knowing skipped the country with no intention of paying the taxpayer back.

FFS the biggest defaulter owes $290K. How do you rack up a loan that big, where is the checks and balances to ensure it can be paid back and why do we care if this person gets locked up coming back for a funeral

5.Scrap departments at universities like Islamic studies and other ones with no economic benefit to the country.

Hardly scratched the surface but that’s a start.

If we want to solve the student loan non-payment problem the interest should be wiped so the impossible to pay amounts of one or two hundred thousand are not wasting iRD, police and court time … the interest was wiped for some it should have been back dated to cover all. The whole scheme was a mistake in thinking a university education brings monetary success by politicians to afraid to say those that can should by a form of UE which culls the no-hopers and does not permit non academic courses.

Don’t think so. Hawaii’s state flag contains the Union Jack, and it wasn’t even in the British Empire. The cross of St Andrew is just symbolic, and I doubt the atheistic leftists who run the SNP would remove this ancient Christian symbol of Scotland (and of Russia, of course).

Regardless, the St Andrew’s diagonal cross in the Union Jack can always symbolise the Scots who settled the bottom quarter of New Zealand, when that part of the country contained a far higher proportion of the national population than it does now.

This is the true cost of the unfettered use of a free resource, public money is diverted from public services to feeding the media and losers like NoRightTurn. I devoutly and passionately defend the OIA (including the bit that allows departments to charge where it is justified). So does the Chief Ombudsman.

What is so different about NZ media that they shriek about this where their US, UK, Australian and Canadian counterparts don’t?

What these hacks are really saying is “We’ve been gorging on the free buffet at taxpayers’ expense, and we don’t want to be paying for it when we turn up at the buffet table wanting to fill a hamper”.

I said from the very start that Key has the most political capital of all PM’s in living memory. But no civil war. No revolution. No Republic. A national colouring in competition. A waste of political capital.

Why would you place so much political capital into something that is so subjective – and without it’s ally – a Republic?

A case of the theory being placed above and beyond the facts.

Truthfully, Paul Keating would say as much. Or as he put it “You have to carry the public with you.”

That’s hard to do when you have no CONCRETE reason for changing the flag.

In all honest truth – Key cannot give one single FACT why the flag ‘should’ or ‘needs’ to be changed.

To even consider your suggestion, I would want to know the $ amount that you advocate cancelling. Simply offsetting the amount against unquantified enforcement costs is not an adequate justification.

Any net taxpayer will be required to contribute to the cost of your suggestion, stepping up to pay for students or ex-students who fail (or in many cases decline) to meet their legally-enforceable debt obligations.

Ngatokotoru Puna, 40, was seized at the airport on Monday over a $130,000 debt. He described his ordeal as “unbelievable” after an appearance at Manukau District Court today.

I’m disgusted that this thieving lying bastard was subsequently allowed to skip off back to the Cook Islands after paying off just $5000 of this $130,000 debt. He’s their Prime Minister’s nephew FFS.

Our system is a joke. He should be incarcerated (along with anybody else in the same position) in a special debtor’s prison and forced to work to pay it off.

Inland Revenue has received a surge of inquiries from student loan defaulters worried they could be arrested if they return to New Zealand.

One man who ignored his repayment obligations contacted the Weekend Herald from Australia and said he would now be scared to return for funerals or weddings.

The Government is unrepentant about the first use of the hardline measure – and a new trick up its sleeve will soon enable thousands of loan defaulters in Australia to be tracked down.

It says the arrest of Ngatokotoru Puna, 40, as he tried to leave New Zealand on Monday was a “last resort” after repeated warnings. Puna told media he was the nephew of Cook Islands Prime Minister Henry Puna

Student unions criticised the border arrest policy as draconian and likely to make overseas Kiwis “student loan refugees” – unable to return home for weddings, funerals or other important events.

After news of Puna’s arrest was revealed in the Herald yesterday, the IRD received more contact than usual from worried borrowers overseas.

@ fernglas – despite a concerted anti-John Key vote (ironically, from lefties who actually want a new flag), I believe that the referendum result will be far closer than has thus far been predicted. At the start of the whole referendum process I was pretty lukewarm about a change of flag, but having now seen the Kyle Lockwood design flying alongside the current flag, I will be voting for change.

@ fernglas – despite a concerted anti-John Key vote (ironically, from lefties who actually want a new flag), I believe that the referendum result will be far closer than has thus far been predicted. At the start of the whole referendum process I was pretty lukewarm about a change of flag, but having now seen the Kyle Lockwood design flying alongside the current flag, I will be voting for change.

I saw the two flying side-by-side yesterday outside Douglas Pharmaceuticals in Henderson (thanks to that iconic Kiwi company, btw, for providing the civic service). Leaving aside the fact that I am probably leaning towards a change (I’ve wanted one for about 20 or so years, and will probably take this the ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ chance to do it), my impressions were as follows:

Aesthetically, the red in the Union Jack provides a greater contrast. The red stars in the Lockwood version are not in sufficient enough proportion to match the blue and the black. Instead, as with say modern versions of Scottish rugby kit, where they combine two dark colours (navy blue and dark purple), contrasted only with white, it lacks the vibrancy when you place another colour from the opposite end of the spectrum. (After this I’m moving in to a career in interior design).

But then you could argue that the shape and placement of the Union Jack is too “clean”, and lacks the necessary ability to creatively “distribute the space” on that flag. Put it this way – the old flag looks like a table cloth with the plates arranged before the meal, and the silver fern after.

So it is more ‘modern’. But, as with the stylised design of the fern, is ‘modern’ something that will go out of fashion? Or does “locking it in” on a flag ensure it will become iconic?

Re the flag referendum:

We haven’t been told (AFAIK, although I could be wrong) who is going to be the ‘Disinterested, Neutral Observer’ in all this. IF there ISN’T one (ie, someone / people from another nation), and based on what seems to be happening at the moment, the result could be a foregone conclusion (if it isn’t already BTW) and we would be none the wiser.

The timing (‘conditioning’?) is simply too convenient….

On the radio thing, I really miss Sean Plunket on RadioLive. I used to call him occasionally and he was a great radio host. I wonder if he’ll resurface somewhere…. but probably not as the NZ market is too small.

That having been said, David Slack is pretty good. He’s a greenie/leftie/socialist and I had him on about that the other day when I called him and we had a good-natured laugh about that. His topics are ‘softer’ than Sean’s and he’s on the other side of the political fence to me, but his style and presentation are good.

I can’t stand that walrus guy Sainsbury who is taking over soon. I won’t be listening. Every time he took over from Sean Plunket I wanted to throw my radio at the wall. He’s a boring mindless drone with the presentation skills of a dementia patient in the rest home. Why did they chuck Plunket and give him the job? Is Radioworks trying to destroy their business?

Anyway, that’s my radio review. Thanks for reading! Cheers 😀

I think it is Tajikistan – a mostly muslim country where the police have shaved the beards off from over 1400 men to stop radicalisation from happening. I think it is the law but men volunteer to police to have it done – I presume then that the majority are ‘moderate’.

That may be a country to keep an eye on, as if nothing happens there then maybe there is such a thing as a moderate muslim society. Time will tell. Mind you – for the size of it Indonesia is pretty moderate.

I am with you on the flag. Even if the existing flag stays, I am grateful that the PM gave me the opportunity to consider change. The great shame is that some people have, hypocritically, made it a political issue (proving how shallow they are and how little confidence we can have in their principles) and others have made it a personal issues, showing how comptuous they are of the rights and views of others.

Manolo, so sad that you feel such loathing for your homeland and all because of a religion . A retired geologist I spoke to recently who has travelled extensively world wide on mineral and oil surveys , found Indonesia the most fascinating in terms of geology and geography .

He found the people he met unfailing in courtesy and politeness .

Interesting political poll results that have Labour at 27. The left are publicly ignoring this although I hear there is a fair amount of soul searching within the labour camp. Cunners is apparently wearing a smug I told you so smirk.

Although sweet cheeks might be tempted to have a BBQ the union movement has a strangle hold on the party and will block any ideas of a change in leader.

Basically Labour are saddled with a leader that the majority of their caucus does not want. They are stuffed……..

Hello, you can read the newspapers but this video is about the real situation in Germany. I would like to tell everyone about this on Youtube and Facebook. I am almost 16. I would like everyone to know what is going on, what I am authentically feeling at this moment.

And I am so scared everywhere. For example, if my family and I go out together, or if I see a movie with my friends. Usually I stay at home, but sometimes I stay out until 6 pm in winter, and it is so scary. It is just very hard to live day-to-day life as a woman.

I just want to say that I am not a racist. But one day, a terrible thing happened at the supermarket. I ran all the way home. I was so frightened for my life. There’s no other way to describe it.

My aunt and her friend have said you have to grow up. Why should we, children, have to grow up in such fear? It’s not just me, my friends too. I agree Dave. I miss Sean too. Wonder where he disappeared to? New partner, new interests?
Agree about David Slack too. Ok for holiday fill-in but too many lefties on the airwaves for me to listen too long these days without tearing my hair out.

Harriet, yes there is the fact it is an Archipelago ,but more interestingly to him as a professional ,the way Indonesia sets astride massive moving tectonic plates ! These have given rise to 76 active volcanoes in living memory ,

at 3am this morning we wandered outside to look at the 5 planets all in a line. Absolutely spectacular and large enough to see easily.

The sky was completely clear of cloud and as we live outside the city, completely dark. Stunningly beautiful and worth a look if you are up before dawn.

Believe they will be visible for a couple more weeks.

Makes you realise how tiny earth is and how insignificant our worldly worries are in such a huge universe!

I honestly beat you to that as I was starting to write that ‘Indonesia’ has not much to do with geography other than it’s ‘generally known’ location….. a better thing to say would be the archipelago area consisting of 1200 islands….but I gave up as I remembered it was that undeserving Milky…. 😎

But take Indonesia and maylasia considerable state and wider public discrimination against ethnic minorities such Chinese. Islam is an important component of the state.

All on Red, well lets try another country with c 200 million , Pakistan which similar to Indonesia has inherited in part a judicial code and practice from its former colonial rulers which precludes that use of the more barbaric punishments associated with strict Sharia.

Interestingly though when we get instances of serious violent offending here we often get the baying for similar punishment s to those offenders by guess who…. ?
