Penny you appear to know as much about cancer as you do about the law. From where i sit your only expertise appears to be cutting and pasting to blogs.

But each to their own I suppose, my only rational in responding to the glyphosphate post was to provide some balance and to allay some peoples fears over such issues.

I have tried to provide similar balance when persons have posted anti vaccination promoting positions on other blogs and also in relation to unfounded fears in relation to the TPPA/PHARMAC in recent times. While this balance has generally been met with derision by the posters of the original information I have responded to I am hopeful that those who choose not to post into these forums have had the benefit of the balanced scientific information I provide.

It would be better to be wary of all those bottles of cleaners under the kitchen sink.They are ‘probably carcinogenic ‘ if used in the wrong manner .
Scaremongering that will cost ratepayers if glyphosate cannot be utilised by council in controlling weeds.

@ Fletch – I saw that last night, and right on cue, a story about Lorde and Twitter has emerged this morning.

Unfortunately for the Herald, they quote the tweet where people were told off by Lorde’s mother for gossiping about the singer’s relationship online. A screenshot of the tweet is included.

But one of the people gossiping about Lorde is someone who goes by the Twitter handle @Zagzigger2. When you click on that, you find out it’s none other than one John Drinnan, who is a Herald columnist. It makes you wonder why the Herald didn’t disclose that particular tidbit.

But yes; that Bingo game would be really funny, if it wasn’t such a sad commentary about how low journalistic standards at Granny Herald have sunk.

The oral contraceptive pill has been associated with slightly higher rates of breast cancer. There seems to be some evidence that it might also reduce the risk of some other cancers.
Something to be balanced against the likely bad effects of unwanted pregnancies.

mm, and yet that doesn’t change the fact that it is categorized as a Class One Carcinogen by the World Health Organisation.

The reasoning behind a combination of estrogen and progesterone/progestin is that estrogen given on its own increases the risk of uterine cancer. Taking a combination of the 2 confers protection from uterine cancer but increases breast cancer risk.

In short, the science behind the increased breast cancer risk stems from 2 primary mechanisms. In both instances, progesterone/progestin becomes a double-edged sword, as it confers protection from increased uterine cancer risk but “gives permission” for estrogen to negatively affect breast DNA.

First, the combination of estrogen plus progesterone/progestin functions as a genotoxin, meaning it directly damages DNA in the breast. Several estrogen metabolites, or breakdown products, including 4-hydroxy-catechol-estrogen quinine, have been proven to function in this manner (Lanfranchi, 2007).

Second, estrogen functions as a mitogen, or cancer promoter, and estrogen promotes cancer in 2 ways. As seen in the graph, it stimulates an explosion of rapid proliferation of cells in breast lobules, causing a greater likelihood of mutations with the increased rate of division. Additionally, estrogen promotes speedier development of any already-cancerous cells in the breast (Lanfranchi, 2007).

How many Kiwibloggers are aware that in NZ Drinking Water Standards – glyphosate is not even listed?

So Round Up is sprayed everywhere – gets into waterways which are sources of public drinking water supplies – and it’s active ingredient glyphosate isn’t even tested for?

…and increased incidence of thrombosis although the risk is still quite low depending on which medicine one takes.. background risk is around 5-10 per 100,000 and OCs increase risk between 3 – 8 times.

I’m not sure how many do or don’t know that there is slight increase in risk. It’s not kept secret.
(Add – for example, I’ve no idea what GPs are required to tell people who want to go on the pill – never having been in that situation myself))

Whether a carcinogenic substance actually induces cancer will depend upon the amount of exposure. So the proper way to address actual risk is by epidemiological study. These overwhelmingly show low risk from using the oral contraceptive pill.
Just because you are opposed to contraception for religious reasons does not mean you need to invent medical reasons to support your argument.

The Indian Journal of Cancer is reporting a study of 640 women, half diagnosed with breast cancer and half healthy to act as a control group. What it found is stunning. The modern lifestyle savagely boosts the mortality risk for women:

“History of abortion was also found to be positively associated with the risk of breast cancer with 6.26 times higher risk in women having a history of abortion. The risk of breast cancer increased 14.9 (95% confidence interval: 8.69, 25.7) and 3.29 (95% confidence interval: 2.15, 5.02) times in women having mean duration of breastfeeding less than 13 months and age at last childbirth more than 27 years, respectively [Table 2].

“It was found that the risk of breast cancer was 9.50 times higher in women having a history of consumption of oral contraceptive pills.”

No disrespect to Lucia Maria, Fletch and Don the Kiwi, but unless it is an Anglican or Presbyterian school (in Auckland for example, Kings or St Kentigerns) then you are still with the peasants. Anyone who has taken a morning rush hour Western line train with the cheerful tyke hooligans of St Peters compared to the generally-WASP pupils from Auckland Grammar knows the empirical truth of the observation.

I assume Harriet may be able to confirm from first hand knowledge, as have other former-pupils of St Bedes in Christchurch to me personally, that they aspired to the same reputation in contrast to the lads from Christ’s and St Andrews.

I’d be a little cautious using one study from the Indian Journal of Cancer as my “gold standard” – especially as there is a lot of research in this area from what I can tell (so much so, that meta-analyses would probably be the most informative).

As far as I know about being excommunicated from the RCC – is that if you keep doing things that you are repeatedly told by the Vatican not to do – they will excommunicate you.

Pelosi has repeatedly announced publicly that she supports abortion – and the Bishop of her diocese has come under attack often for her not being excommunicated. You never used to be able to keep defying tenets of the Church in previous decades without being excommunicated.

Someone out in Toowoomba or somewhere else in QLD last year was excommunicated – and for far less than what Pelosi, Blair and others have said on abortion and gays ect to the media.

I think the RCC doesn’t want the negative PR that they would certainly get if they started dealing with the ‘liberal darlings’ like Blair.

A few minutes ago there was a news item stating that KDC had been cleared to be deported to the States. However that was an aside of the news item. The real story was that KDC has not abandoned his music career and has made a video sitting in a rocking chair on the top of a mountain.

There was no more details about the court case, time-line on his deportation. What is wrong with the news media in this country!!!

As far as I know about being excommunicated from the RCC – is that if you keep doing things that you are repeatedly told by the Vatican not to do – they will excommunicate you.

Given that the number of RC’s who take birth control in New Zealand may number in the tens of thousands, one can understand why the policy is not applied except in particularly egregious and blatant cases.

Smaller Protestant sects, particularly the Jehovahs Witnesses do practice it ruthlessly if absolute obedience is not given to the “organisation” – but as the JW’s do not believe the majority of their baptised adherents are also members of the (invisible and spiritual) church, they call it “disfellowshipping and shunning” instead of excommunication.

Also, in line with Calvin’s theology, some conservative Reformed/Presbyterian denominations still do. But cases of burning at the stake such as Servetus are now rare 😉

So we have a B-grade actress protesting that her action/comedy husband wasn’t nominated (thinly disguised as a diversity protest) supported by a Blacktivist B movie director.

Not really any obvious conflict of interest there?

The real problem is that Will Smith has failed to follow the tried and tested formula for action/comedy actors to be nominated for the Oscars. To be taken as a serious actor you have to follow either (preferably both to be taken as really a “serious” artist) of the following strategies:
1) You have to go for a ‘retard’ role – not full retard as so eloquently explained by Robert Downey in Tropic Thunder
or/and
2) You have to go the Belsen weight loss role route

Tom Hanks made the transition from lightweight puff romcom movie star to serious actor by repeatedly using these techniques:
– Forest Gump (part retard)
– Philadelphia (Belsen weight loss role)
– Castaway (Belsen weight loss)

Others have employed these techniques too, compounding their effectiveness with the ‘poor oppressed minority’ slant to the role (a la Tom Hanks in Philadelphia):
– Sean Penn (Milk – the Belsen technique allied with the oh poor misunderstood gays with AIDS twist again)
– Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyer’s Club) again, the Belsen /poor gays with AIDS approach combo

The list goes on and on. It’s not hard. Hollywood loves crash weight loss and feel good part-retard roles. Of course you would have been excused if you mistook Will Smith’s execrable acting in “The pursuit of Happyness” or “After Earth” for his attempt at a partial retard role. However Will Smith has failed to avail himself of these two obvious ‘transition to serious actor’ strategies.

When he does a ‘retard’ or ‘Belsen diet’ role – and doesn’t get nominated – then I think his wife can get offended.

Until then – what a dick she is. I imagine no one will notice that a nobody like her isn’t there. In fact, I suspect that the absence of a negative will result in a positive experience for all those who do attend the 2016 Oscars.

Women who take the pill are far different to those who promote it, so different ‘sentences’ have to be imposed upon them. Sinning is far different to promoting sin.

The High Court is pretty much closed over Xmas and through to the end of January, so getting dates for hearing appeals gets well pushed out. KDC’s lawyers filed the appeal while the final echoes of Judge Dawson’s decision were still resounding in the Auckland District Court, so the next move is a High Court hearing date to be fixed. That will probably happen in early Feb.

I’d be a little cautious using one study from the Indian Journal of Cancer as my “gold standard” – especially as there is a lot of research in this area from what I can tell (so much so, that meta-analyses would probably be the most informative).

Oh, I agree. But still, that doesn’t take away from the fact that the WHO have categorized it as a Class one carcinogen – up there in the same list with tobacco, radiation, asbestos and formaldehyde. Granted, not everyone who smokes tobacco will die of cancer, yet cigarette packages still have those gory pictures displayed on them. Maybe packages of The Pill should likewise have images of women who have had breasts removed. And if not, why not? What is the difference? According to the WHO, they are both in the same category.

Equating risk from the pill with that from smoking is a false equivalence. The risk is completely different. Also, there are no health benefits frm smoking – there are benefits from preventing unwanted pregnancies.
As I said before, just because a substance might be carcinogenic does not mean that all exposure to that substance is dangerous.
As I also said, I think you oppose contraception for religious reasons but are pretending that there are health risks to scare people.

There seems a common theme with these “activists”, and that is that they are so sure that they know best that they will try to force their opinions on you at every turn. A common denominator I have found is that they are generally closet fascists and not particularly clever. So sure are they of their own rectitude that they are incapable of seeing that others may also have a valid point of view. How those opposing views are discredited vary; it can be an attack on them as greedy, for example, or on the holder of the views being less intelligent than the activist. Again, my experience is that those who attack those holding opposing views on the basis that they are not intelligent are generally sufficiently thick themselves to be in no position to criticise others.

Edit Fletch your analogy is rather silly and if enacted would have regulations requiring the labelling of fried foods, cured foods etc with health warnings about cancer. In relation to medications that may cause cancer the data is recored in the prescribing information and the risks of prescribing the medicine will be balanced up by the clinician prior to prescribing.
