RIP Jonah Lomu 1975 – 2015

His 37 tries for the All Blacks. My favourites are the four against England on 18 June 1995.

Such a sad loss. 40 is far too young.

Take a keen interest in try #33; around the 6:40 mark. Lomu’s try, against Scotland at Murrayfield, comes after a bust by another young player who would also become an All Black legend on his own account; one Richard Hugh McCaw.

But there are some fantastic tries there from the man who completely changed the way wings played. Imagine how good he would have been had he not been beset by kidney disease for much of his career.

The man who made professional rugby possible. And spawned the greatest piece of rugby commentary since Winston McCarthy. Keith Quinn’s “Lomu, oh! oh!” pretty much captured what he did to Mike Catt…and the effect he had on world rugby from that moment on.

Not really the greatest All Black left winger from a purist point of view (maybe that accolade belongs to Ron Jarden) – Lomu’s positional play on both attack and defence was a bit suspect – hardly surprising as he was pitched straight into the wing position from No. 8 as an All Black, and due to his size he was sometimes a bit slow to turn. And he didn’t have much reason to practice his chip-kicking skills! But compared to the natural gifts he brought to the game, which delighted followers and will still be raved about 100 years from now, that is mere quibbling as he always the first guy you would pick. An incredible athlete.

Along with his rugby, his various wives/partners and an agent who once allegedly negotiated to have him as a henchman in a James Bond movie, Lomu packed a lot of living into an all-too-brief but eventful life.

I was at rugby training here in the US when a mate from home texted the shocking news. I was administering the beep test to some new recruits so I had my phone on me rather than in my bag. Trouble was that not many neophyte rugby playing US high school boys knew who Jonah was. I know people in Auckland close to Jonah’s family and I had heard that, after the rejection of the donated kidney, his health was deteriorating. In his role as ambassador for some of the RWC sponsors, he made several media appearances during the recent RWC and he was interviewed about the accomplishments of Ritchie McCaw and Dan Carter. He seemed cheerful and humble. What a terrible tragedy for his wife and young family and my thoughts and prayers are with them.

Jonah inspired many of our current All Blacks and countless other players, he enthralled millions and became arguably the first rugby international media superstar after his stunning tries at the 1996 RWC in South Africa. His achievements are all the more remarkable when you factor in the gradual debilitating shadow of his kidney disease.

New Zealand mourns your passing – world rugby mourns as well. One of the greatest players of the game we love has left far far too soon.

Also a big shout-out to his mum, Hepi, a South Auckland cleaner who raised the money to get him off the bad streets of South Auckland and away from bad company and into Wesley College where his life began to change.

An absolute legend- One can only imagine what his record would have been had he not been struck down by illness at a very young age..
His form in 1995 was simply off the planet.

When I first saw him play it was a shock… sitting at home watching the Condor Sevens and I thought there was a man playing for Wesley College…. but it was a 17-18 year old Jonah. Running mostly around opponents with an in and away which was just freaking awesome…..

To come back from what was a pretty average performance against Les Bleu in 1994 for such a young guy was a testament to his mental strength. Some players would never have recovered from that as the French made him look pretty average on defense especially against kicks in behind.

Sir Gordon I believe made him who he was by taking him in to the Sevens environment and getting him Tiejtchens fit, which is really other world fitness. And then the Runaway Train set the 1995 RWC on fire….

Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist, Super Rugby Winner, NPC Champion [thank you Jonah, us Lions supporters would love you forever just for that one sublime game at the house of evil in Canterbury!!!], All Black winner of the Bledisloe and the Tri Nations.

But for me the things that really rate are:

Taking being sat for the 1996 Series in South Africa for Glen Osborne and Jeff Wilson as wingers. That must have hurt, but he didn’t bitch he just supported the team

2 [and the real biggie for me]

1999. Semi Final. Playing like an absolute beast and his team mates gave in to a French comeback. Les Bleu rallied from half time and ran away with it. And when the final whistle blew and distraught All Blacks disappeared from the field what did the big man do? He stay out and congratulated the French players… CLASS.

Big Man, Big pride in the Jersey, Humble in Victory, Gracious in Defeat. LEGEND

Amen to that davinci. It’s almost as bad as the tweet from Harbrow at No Right Turn which I posted on the GD thread where he used Lomu’s death to make a snide comment about the PM. There are some sick, petty and gutless people out there.

I already commented about Jonah Lomu on the GD, but I’m very glad DPF has put up a separate thread.
Few sportsmen get to be known widely by their first name or nickname only: Jonah.
The first global superstar of the game as it went professional.
The pattern for all subsequent blockbusting wingers.
A real gentleman – I’ve never heard a bad word spoken about him. He always seemed a genuinely humble man.
I count myself fortunate that he moved to play for Wellington and the Hurricanes so that we could watch him in action here in the capital.

Back to Lomu though- I just saw some footage of him from some Promotional work during the RWC. He looked very,very unwell.
Very sad, I like to remember him as the destroyer he was in the mid 90s..
And he was, by all accounts, a bloody nice guy.

I missed a good chunk of Lomu’s career due my US isolation from rugby. All I had was what I heard of him from friends and emails. But he was probably still near near his peak when I saw him play in that great Tri-Nations series against the World Champion Wallaby side in 2000. Watching him I realised that he was every bit the legend I’d heard about. As a guy who’d been regarded as “big, fast” winger in my day I just had to laugh at that notion in the age of Lomu.

And I still recall the shock of seeing him shuffle across the stage to get an award just a few years ago. People were in tears in the audience and I was close: just so sad.

There have been, are and will be better players and better wingers – but I’d pay money every day of the week and twice in Sundays just to see Lomu play as he once did.

And when the final whistle blew and distraught All Blacks disappeared from the field what did the big man do? He stay out and congratulated the French players… CLASS.

A legend who came out of nowhere to be recognised by not only serious rugby heads, but we the general unwashed as well.

I remember being shocked when he started looking like shit not very long after that world cup performance. He’s been a pretty sick boy for a long time, what a life.

As he freely admitted rugby helped Jonah turn his life around, but what he was far more circumspect about was the impact he had on uplifting others, closing down prejudices and not afraid of admitting vulnerability coming from a violent and tough childhood. It was great to see him emerge from a person shy and barely able to speak on camera to someone relaxed with himself and confident. And what a name, that took a real legend to fulfil. He will be widely missed, far, far, too soon.

This sucks so bad. His boys are only 5 and 6. Not even old enough to appreciate who he was outside of home. Most of us think of our dads as a super hero at that age, in their case, their dad was.

I have no doubt his image and legend will outlive all of us.

Just a sad sad day.

I’ve loved seeing all those great tries from Lomu again, what an exciting player. Plus he didn’t ever waver, he saw the line and burst through defensive lines like a hot knife through butter. Sure his defence was not great but he more than made up for it by scoring at will at the other end. While the Mike Catt ‘tackle’ remains the iconic try, I think his tries against Ireland and Wales earlier in the 1995 World Cup were his best.

And I always remember how he never gave up on his desire for that Black Jersey, but he knew he had to prove it first. That drive and his humility on and off the field make him the type of person young people should aspire to be, whether it be in sport or any other profession they follow.

It’s not a slur and I don’t know why you think it is disgusting. The danger of megadosing on creatine monohydrate wasn’t well understood in the mid 1990s and is now believed to be a major contributing factor to his nephrotic disease. There’s a number of international players from his generation who suffer from the same problem.

Creatine monohydrate isn’t a drug. It’s an amino acid that’s widely used by athletes as a nutritional supplement (it’s naturally found in red meat). It’s perfectly safe unless you take too much and over-load your kidneys.

Hopefully the next generation of players will learn from this.

My favourite Lomu try was the one that won us the 2000 Bledisloe Cup/Tri Nations game in Sydney – 39-35 I think the score was. That was the test when the ABs went 21-0 up in five minutes, and Lomu’s try in the dying seconds won the game.

I also remember him outside the old Rugby Union HQ in Wellington signing autographs for kids and mucking about with them on their skateboards.

I’m just guessing, but I doubt whether the people who have taken to posting links to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and neo-Nazi websites at Kiwiblog would be very keen on Jonah.

I grew up down the road from Wesley and Lomu was a legend in the district even before he’d finished school. Friends would rave about seeing him at a party, and speculate about when he’d make the move to the NRL. Back in the early ’90s no one could imagine how quickly and thoroughly rugby would professionalise.

I think that Jonah won the hearts of New Zealanders partly because of the way he combined massive, devastating power on the field with a gentle, almost diffident personality. He’d literally walk over a hapless England winger, but everyone knew there was no malice involved. His modesty and his complete lack of rancour somehow made him seem like an ordinary guy off the street, despite his herculean play.

Re the down-ticks. This isn’t an ideological/political issue. There are about the same number of numpties making similar comments on John Key’s Facebook comment on this. So there is clearly a class of people who are so utterly bereft of human decency and so craving of attention that they will take any opportunity to parade their immaturity and personal inadequacies including dissing the greatest rugby player of the modern era. I mean, how low can you go? I know it is against the Libertarian spirit of this blog but personally I would slap a few weeks ban on such numpties. My only consolation is that they must be desperately unhappy people who will never know the warmth of human embrace.

The biggest irony tonight; Paul Hobbs from One News standing outside the Lomu home ( and telling the world what suburb they were in), whilst reading out the statement from Nadine Lomu requesting privacy. We didn’t need to know that the hearse had just left, or that Michael Jones, Eroni Clark and Ofisa Tonu’u had just left, looking really upset.

Sometimes our media people are just ghoulish in their pursuit of a story, and tonight was an excellent example of that. It did TVNZ no credit whatsoever.

No evidence? Do you think the Director General of WADA was telling lies when he stated that excessive creatine use is a cause of liver and kidney failure? Or that Joeli Vederi – Jonah’s teammate on the Blues – is mistaken for blaming creatine as a factor in developing his own nephrotic syndrome?

It’s not a slur to talk about the dangers of excessive creatine consumption. It’s not a drug and the dangers weren’t understood when Jonah was still playing. Talking about it doesn’t diminish Jonah’s achievements or reflect on his character – it is simply an opportunity to educate.

You can sweep it under the carpet if you wish, but I work with young athletes and have a moral obligation to talk about what has happened.

I just had a look at Matangi Tonga, one of the leading voices in Tonga’s thriving media scene, and I see they have a piece up honouring Lomu:

They’ve claimed Jonah as a great Tongan rugby player. Reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend in Tonga on the eve of the World Cup final. I asked him whether he was disappointed Tonga had done so badly in the World Cup, and he replied ‘No, there are Tongans in the All Blacks and in the Wallabies. The final is Tonga versus Tonga’. When my wife and I were in Samoa in 2009 we gave a long ride to a bloke who spent the journey telling us that the All Blacks were a Samoan team. At the time I think they are six or seven Samoans in the ABs. The blurring of the boundaries between the tropical Pacific and New Zealand, with a generation of young Pasifika people now identifying intensely with both regions, is one of the most important developments in recent NZ history, and the All Blacks have come to symbolise the symbiotic relationship we now have with Tonga and Samoa and to an extent Fiji.

I think some Tongans were disappointed that Jonah didn’t visit his ancestral homeland more often. It may well have been hard for him to spend long there, though, with his medical condition.

I don’t know what to do with my aching heart. I don’t want to answer the phone. I can’t believe it’s true. So many times stupid rumours have been passed around that Jonah had died, and they were just horrible tasteless lies.

This is not a hoax…..Oh God that it was…..

One of my best friends is gone. Jonah who would talk with me about everything from Versace dinner ware to silly drinking games has gone. Jonah always stood up for me. He actually stood up for me like a big brother. Jonah stayed with us for months and we’d talk and hoon around and laugh, and always watch Antiques Roadshow. One thing about my boy is he had great taste in women, and through the years I became friends with the lovely Teina, the indomitable Fiona, and the ever loving Nadene. He sure had great taste in women,

Jonah I’m going to miss your calls from all the strangest places in the world. I’ll miss telling you off and telling you the truth when no-one else will do it. I’ll miss your big hands describing the cool things you’ve seen, and the quiet dignified way you handled, fans, foes and your illness.

Jonah I miss you arriving in the middle of the night with a big feed and presents for the kids [Far too generous] I’mll miss the way you always called me Miss Polly, and would come in to the lounge, lie on my couch and immediately go in to a deep sleep for hours. It was the magic couch eh J-Lo?

Grant and I loved you like our own brother, and life without you already hurts so badly. I can’t stop crying. I can’t stop wishing I could have somehow done something. I’m going to miss you like a naughty little brother. Oh Jonah…what are we to do without you? I still have half your stuff stored in your room at our house. My God you were more than the worlds greatest to me. You were just my friend, and I miss my friend.

Your post at 9:28 is utterly disgraceful. If you are educating young sportsmen/women and think it is ok to post something like that on the day of the death of Lomu then I doubt you could be teaching them the right sort of values about sport or life.

Jonah was very supportive of my campaign to improve the organ donor system.
I talked to him about championing the cause.
He declined at that time as he was waiting for a kidney and didn’t want to be seen as “self serving”
But out of the media spotlight on the issue he was encouraging and an inspiration to my cause.

I find the downticks on this thread abhorrent. Surely this thread should be where we can offer our respect for Jonah and our sympathy to his family. Those who feel otherwise should just stay out of it and vent whatever it is they have, elsewhere or just keep it to themselves. If they can’t say something good about him then just stay out. It makes you really wonder about some people!!

RIP Jonah. A legend on and off the field. Not many athletes are recognised from just one name, but those that are, are legendary athletes. He stands in the parthenon of legends.

And I upticked most (but _not_ all) of the posts here, just to compensate for the sad f*cker who is downticking almost all of them.

Jonah was a great player and he will be remembered for being a star.

A state funeral is for a Kiwi that has done an immeasurable good for NZ. Does Jonah fit that category? No. He did a lot for rugby and rugby supporters.

John key wouldn’t fit in the state funeral category either IMHO.

Post something like what? The fact that Jonah took Creatine and later suffered from nephrotic syndrome?

These are facts. If talking about these facts helps young athletes to make good choices that keep them healthy, then that is a good thing.

I can only assume from all the downticks that most Kiwiblog commentators don’t actually know what creatine is. It isn’t a drug – its a nutritional supplement that contains a substance that is naturally found in meat. It’s entirely legal and used by many athletes in many sports. The issue is that it isn’t inherently safe because of the load it places on the kidneys, and that’s the message that young athletes need to learn from Jonah’s death.

To repeat:
1. Creatine supplements have not been conclusively linked with kidney failure
2. There is no evidence that Jonah Lomu took creatine supplements
3. Your attack on him is tasteless, to say the least, on the very day of his death. (still applies tonight)
