According to a Herald report the migrant settlement agency Arms has decreed that the sensibilities of its recently arrived clients must not be offended by hearing that obscene word ‘Christmas’. It is to be banned and that hideous greeting ‘happy holidays’ is to take its place. And who is close behind in support of all this nonsense? Why none other than that Trojan Horse of the progressive movement, Dame Susan Devoy. It seems that Dame Susan’s view of good race relations is to drive a wedge between immigrants and the rest of us by telling those choosing to come and live amongst us that they have no need to assimilate and have no need to embrace kiwi culture. Surely the woman realises that Christmas is a kiwi tradition that is celebrated by Christians and non-Christian alike.

Why did the st Luke’s expansion get non notified resource consent.

My understanding of the law (from a lawyer) is that if a resource consent is minor in that it is inconcievable that anyone will object then a non notified consent can be given.

I had to get consent from neighbours to get a minor thing on my house done but st Luke’s can massively expand without needing consent?????

Would a lawyer care to say how they can issue non notified consents for such a large development?

We will all note that the Herald is now getting in a dig at Christians by reporting that the numbers of Christian in NZ have declined- without actually pointing out what is far more pertinent to the story and that is the blindingly obvious fact that Christmas is Christmas is Christmas to Christian and non-Christian Kiwis alike.

New Zealand Herald columnist John Roughan has been forced to release recordings of his conversations with Prime Minister John Key as part of a court case relating to the “teapot tapes”.
Roughan had refused to surrender transcripts and recordings used for his biography John Key, Portrait of a Prime Minister. He was asked for the documents a year ago under the discovery process for a defamation case being taken against Mr Key by freelance photographer Bradley Ambrose.
The Privacy Commission told the columnist last week that his book did not meet the criteria for the Privacy Act exemption which allowed journalists to protect their sources.

The government gave more power to councils to designate consent decision making to staff.

Pesky people who used to be affected are now snuffed out.While there were some who abused the system it was usually easy to sort out who they were.
Decisions now made in back rooms and goodness knows what goes on in the process.

I am not a fundamentalist, though I already know you have no clue what the word actually means. Nor do I believe in the Dispensational “End times” stuff. Nor do most of the Republican contenders for the nomination, and nor do any of the conservative sources I use. Words are merely symbols that we use to represent concepts and ideas.

Here, the problem arises over the word “Muslim.” Clearly, we do not all assign the same concepts and ideas to this word. If the diversity of the concepts and ideas that we ascribe to a word goes beyond a certain limit, then the usefulness of that word in meaningful dialogue starts to break down.

The word “Muslim” is too broad a term to be much use. (Maybe that’s the reason why the politicians avoid it.)

A German researcher studies the NASA GISS data on global warming, and yes, it has been “massively altered” to show warming when there is none.

Veteran journalist Günter Ederer writes a piece reporting that massive alterations have been found in the NASA GISS temperature data series, citing a comprehensive analysis conducted by a leading German scientist.

These results are now available to the public. Professor Dr. Friedrich Karl Ewert. Source: University of Paderborn Ederer reports not long ago retired geologist and data computation expert Professor Dr. Friedrich Karl Ewert began looking at the data behind the global warming claims, and especially the datasets of NASA’s Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS). Ewert painstakingly examined and tabulated the reams of archived data from 1153 stations that go back to 1881 which NASA has publicly available – data that the UN IPCC uses on which to base its conclusion that man is heating the Earth’s atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels.

According to Ederer, what Professor Ewert found was “unbelievable”: From the publicly available data, Ewert made an unbelievable discovery: Between the years 2010 and 2012 the data measured since 1881 were altered so that they showed a significant warming, especially after 1950. […] A comparison of the data from 2010 with the data of 2012 shows that NASA-GISS had altered its own datasets so that especially after WWII a clear warming appears – although it never existed.”

Ederer writes that Ewert particularly found alterations at stations in the Arctic. Professor Ewert randomly selected 120 stations from all over the world and compared the 2010 archived data to the 2012 data and found that they had been tampered to produce warming. The old data showed regular cycles of warming and cooling over the period, even as atmospheric CO2 concentration rose from 0.03% to 0.04%. According to the original NASA datasets, Ederer writes, the mean global temperature cooled from 13.8°C in 1881 to 12.9°C in 1895. Then it rose to 14.3°C by 1905 and fell back under 12.9°C by 1920, rose to 13.9°C by 1930, fell to 13° by 1975 before rising to 14°C by 2000. By 2010 the temperature fell back to 13.2°C.

But then came the “massive” altering of data, which also altered the entire overall trend for the period. According to journalist Ederer, Ewert uncovered 10 different methods NASA used to alter the data.

The 6 most often used methods were: • Reducing the annual mean in the early phase. • Reducing the high values in the first warming phase. • Increasing individual values during the second warming phase. • Suppression of the second cooling phase starting in 1995. • Shortening the early decades of the datasets. • With the long-term datasets, even the first century was shortened.

The methods were employed for stations such as Darwin, Australia and Palma de Mallorca, for example, where cooling trends were suddenly transformed into warming. Ewert then discovered that NASA having altered the datasets once in March 2012 was not enough. Alterations were made again in August 2012, and yet again in December 2012. If care to read the artcle a lot more carefully and not selectively you will see that ISIS has similar parallels with other ideological movements and fanaticism such as the Khmer Rouge , Rwandan Genocide and of course Nazism. The latter also on much larger scale .

A witness to this dreadful event was the US Ambassador to Romania . The Romanian Prime Minster Ion Antonescu ( conductor ) quickly suppressed the rebellion . Yet the same leader formed an alliance with the Iron Guard , both responsible for exterminating over half of Romania ’s 700,000 Jews.

When the European migration crisis reached its latest peak earlier this year, a Jewish friend said to me: ”This will come round to hurt the Jews – you’ll see.” At the time, I dismissed it. ”The only group this might affect are Muslims,” I replied. He knew better. ”You’ll see,” he warned. And now I have.

I’ve been writing about the migration crisis for a long time. It is a complex moral and strategic issue with few easy answers. But something is changing and, although I am not Jewish, I like to think I have been enough of a friend and developed enough of an understanding of the Jewish community in this country to be allowed to issue a warning of sorts.

The problem with the migration crisis is that the politicians are trying to follow public opinion, but the public do not know what we want. Do we want to be unprecedentedly generous or unprecedentedly fearful? Are the incomers like 1930s German Jews or are they just 21st-century economic migrants? Most of us think they are a bit of both and so our thoughts fluctuate. This makes the debate not only fractious but prone to dangerous swings.

In the summer, when the tragic photo came out of a young Syrian boy washed up on the shores of Turkey, some vocal Europeans had a spasm of ”let them in.” Others said, ”be careful”. But the heart overruled the head. And can do again. The next turn of the wheel was always going to be when the migrants were associated not with humanitarian warmth but terrorist atrocities. Now they are.

How, then, could a migration of millions of Muslim men (in the main) from not only the Middle East but sub-Saharan Africa, have any negative effect on Jews? The first aspect is obvious: among those populations there will be many who bring the hatreds and suspicions of Jews that are inculcated in their homelands and faith. In time, this will lead to more attacks like that on the Jewish school in Toulouse (2012), the Jewish Museum in Brussels (2014) or the Jewish food-market in Paris (2015). But here, wider public sympathy will go to the victims of these attacks rather than their perpetrators.

Yet another theme has bubbled up which it genuinely shocks me to discover. For many Jewish groups and Jewish leaders have been taking a conspicuous lead in welcoming refugees. Some initiatives – such as that to save Christian children in the Middle East who are being ”cleansed” from the region – are hugely admirable and widely appreciated. But it is specific and needed. Other initiatives and statements from Jewish leaders and groups appear to be welcoming any and all refugees and equating the plight of 1930s Jews with all 21st-century migrants. This is not just a misreading of history but an incorrect application of history. It also sets up a dangerous linkage between Jews who are already in Europe and an increasingly unpopular, current European migration policy. Allow me to relay some recent personal anecdotes. They do not add up to an analysis but they are scents of something I believe is now in the wind.

During an episode of Question Time last month, the historian Simon Schama made a somewhat haughty and personal attack on my Spectator colleague Rod Liddle. Specifically, he chided Rod (who was urging wariness of letting into the country anybody who wants to come here) for allegedly turning his ”suburban face” away from the troubles of the world. This was a little rich, and I said in print that it is all very well for Professor Schama to swan into Britain and tell us to take millions of migrants because he can always head back to his well-off (and distinctly white) neighbourhood in the US.

When the piece went viral, the replies included an element that was new and seized on an aspect of Schama that never occurred to me. ”One law for the Jews, another for the rest of us” was the nub of it. Well, Schama is a distinguished public figure and can say and think what he likes. Nobody else needs to feel responsible for him.

A couple of weeks later, the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, got into a row with his country’s most successful son. At a time when Orban was under huge pressure from his electorate not to let thousands of migrants into the country, he upbraided George Soros for being behind the many ”open borders” NGOs which were putting pressure on Hungary. In reply, Soros confirmed that, yes, whereas Orban thought migrants the problem and borders the solution, Soros did indeed think borders the problem and migrants the solution.

In reporting this exchange, the same theme emerged. ”It’s all very well for the Jews. They have Israel where only Jews can go and all the time they’re destroying our own religious and racial identity in Europe.”

And another theme started to come up which I never thought I’d hear in my lifetime: ”Ah – the rootless, cosmopolitan Jew.” Searching online I find that this is indeed becoming a theme. A video watched hundreds of thousands of times on YouTube excerpts an interview with a Jewish academic in Sweden who explains that Europe ”has not yet learned how to be multicultural.”

She goes on: ”Europe is not going to be the monolithic societies that they once were in the last century. Jews are going to be at the centre of that. It’s a huge transformation for Europe to make. They are now going into a multicultural mode, and Jews will be resented because of our leading role.”

This remains a minority opinion for now. But here comes the bigger problem. Only seven per cent of Britons surveyed in a recent poll said they wanted immigration into Britain to increase. It is impossible to say what direction Europe is going to go in the near future, and we are all going to have to be on our guard and spend time countering bigotries and hatreds that could spill out in any direction. But the open-heartedness of so many Jews must also be countered by more vocal and visible even-headedness. In particular, this constitutes a careful warning that it could yet be a problem for European Jews if their leaders and visible figures get ahead of (and are seen to be the progenitors of) a mass movement of peoples that looks likely in the near future to go unimaginably sour, thus bearing out my pessimistic Jewish friend’s worst fears.

Hmm. Dr Pio clearly comes from a migrant community that does celebrate Christmas – indeed, you could argue the Pacific Islands are about the last bastion of Christendom! – so that probably colours her (sensible) perspective.

But the Anglican Dean says the Christmas message is one of “peace, hope, joy and love”. Yeah. But it is equally one of judgement. “Peace on earth and good will to men” (Luke 2:14) in its biblical context is not talking in the first instance about human relationships/multi-culturalism (although it does have that downstream possibility/implication). Instead, it is referring to God’s attitude towards humanity, which was previously hostile due to disobedience and sin. The incarnation – God adding human nature to himself in the form of Jesus Christ – is God’s pledge that he has drawn as near to us as is possible, and will now redeem and renew us…as long as we join ourselves to Christ by faith. But if not, we remain under his judgement – indeed, due to conscious rejection of his gospel/”good news”, our judgement is even more severe.

So the “message” is inclusive and multicultural – all who want to be joined to God, whether Jew or Gentile, black or white, rich or poor, female or male may do so. But it is also exclusive. Through “Christ alone” as the Reformers asserted.

Which makes me ponder Nukuleka’s and others assertions on this page that Christmas is a “national holiday”. What we have now has be overlaid with centuries of tradition, including the philosophical filters of the 4th and 5th Centuries AD where the Trinitarian and Christological formulas were first codified. Yet I don’t see the wider public debating or discussing, say, the Athanasian Creed

The original Christmas message should be as both hope-filled or offensive as it was in the 1st Century AD. It depends on how you react to it. It is not a “national” holiday. Instead it is a vestige of Christendom, that has essentially be been de-sacralised to make it palatable to as many as possible. If that is the case, then like the observance of Pentecost (arguably just as an important feast in the Church) I see no reason for Christians to object to elements being further discarded to fit the requirements and beliefs of new non-Christendom observing New Zealanders.

Christ called Christians to make disciples of all nations…not try and preserve the vestiges of a past political order that have little, if any, benefit in fulfilling his mandate, and when doing so brings unnecessary distraction and strife.

“Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.” The CIA’s famous Presidential Daily Brief, presented to George W. Bush on August 6, 2001, has always been Exhibit A in the case that his administration shrugged off warnings of an Al Qaeda attack. But months earlier, starting in the spring of 2001, the CIA repeatedly and urgently began to warn the White House that an attack was coming.

By May of 2001, says Cofer Black, then chief of the CIA’s counterterrorism center, “it was very evident that we were going to be struck, we were gonna be struck hard and lots of Americans were going to die.” “There were real plots being manifested,” Cofer’s former boss, George Tenet, told me in his first interview in eight years. “The world felt like it was on the edge of eruption. In this time period of June and July, the threat continues to rise. Terrorists were disappearing [as if in hiding, in preparation for an attack]. Camps were closing. Threat reportings on the rise.” The crisis came to a head on July 10. The critical meeting that took place that day was first reported by Bob Woodward in 2006. Tenet also wrote about it in general terms in his 2007 memoir At the Center of the Storm.

But neither he nor Black has spoken about it publicly in such detail until now—or been so emphatic about how specific and pressing their warnings really were. Over the past eight months, in more than a hundred hours of interviews, my partners Jules and Gedeon Naudet and I talked with Tenet and the 11 other living former CIA directors for The Spymasters, a documentary set to air this month on Showtime…

I’ve read At the Centre of the Storm and yes, Tenet is relatively equivocal about what exactly they knew. You can fairly conclude from that book that (mostly) Cheney heavily gilded the lily on the WMD intel, basically making it up. Something that Blair is now about to be prosecuted for, which is why he recently apologised for his part in taking the UK into it, not because he felt guilty, but to try to mitigate his own culpability. But in the book Tenet glosses over what they actually were told. But now, he comes clean.

Hopefully a few more sheeple will awaken as a result. Most of them of course will keep baaing and bleating in their green green meadows of false peace and false hope.

If the Jury says “Not guilty” there are going to be some awfully embarrassed journos / bloggers in NZ and elsewhere.

Guilty on what we have seen reported? In my view “not proven”.

But gambling (mainly on horses) has been endemic in cricket (too much loose time on their hands when not fielding) and commentators for a long time. The leap from one form to another is small so the sooner it is stamped out in cricket the better.

Harriet, I like you, and your posts are amusing, but that statement is manifestly complete crap! Are NZ Christians arrested for proclaiming the gospel/winning converts as in the 1st Century? Are our churches closed? Are Christians in the West, and in NZ in particular beaten in the streets, deprived of possessions, or denied the even-handed justice of the courts as the Apostle Paul suffered when he first proclaimed the Gospel?! And Paul didn’t want any favours from Rome – just the recognition Christians were no threat to Caesar’s rule, and the right to be left in peace to proclaim the gospel – which has always been the Church’s role, not Caesar’s!

Currently persecuted and martyred Christians in the Middle East and North Africa would look at your statement and shake their heads in wonderment. Some around here want to resist the encroachment of Islam – and fair enough. Give Islamists an inch and they will take a mile. As I’ve said many times, we have sufficient law on the statute books to protect everyone’s rights and freedoms in our non-sectarian constitution – all it will require are politicians and magistrates of sufficient courage to resist when the challenge comes (and re-negotiating some of the details about the observance of Christmas ain’t necessarily it).

But, please, don’t insult those who suffer real persecution in parts of the world by moaning and grizzling that we are “not allowed”, and the implication New Zealand or Australia or UK or French Christians are persecuted. We are not. Insulted and ridiculed, or ignored and treated with indifference? Yep, certainly. But then that is a the price you pay for the freedom we enjoy in our current political and social environment. And long may that be the case!

Israelis Reeling from Deadliest Wave of Terror Yet

“ALON SHVUT, Israel — Israel suffered its deadliest day yet in the current wave of terror. Five died in two separate attacks Thursday, including an American teenager studying in Israel.

Ezra Schwartz came to Israel to join a program co-sponsored by the Jewish Agency and the Israeli government. The head of the Jewish Agency, Natan Sharansky, said his death was even more tragic because Schwartz came to be part of the vibrant Israeli experience.

On Thursday afternoon, a 24-year-old Palestinian terrorist from nearby Hebron began shooting at cars in the next lane with an automatic rifle. He killed Ezra and two others, a Palestinian and an Israeli, and wounded seven.

A video caught the aftermath when Israeli police surrounded the terrorist.

Earlier in the day, two Israelis died in Tel Aviv when 36-year-old Raed Mahmoud walked into a worship service and began stabbing people during afternoon prayers. He worked in a restaurant next door.

Hamas praised both of the attacks, which came almost one year to the day after a major terror attack on a Jerusalem synagogue killed four during morning prayers.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the terrorists will pay a price for these attacks, and Israeli officials continue to blame incitement by the Palestinian Authority and its political party, Fatah.

Fatah recently held a rally honoring the terrorist responsible for the first two murders in this recent upsurge of violence.

Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz tweeted that the Palestinian Arab terrorism is simply the same radical Islam as ISIS.

Many Israelis agree.”

Escaped Yazidis Share Chilling Tales of ISIS Captivity

“KANKLE REFUGEE CAMP, Kurdistan — A military campaign against ISIS is giving hope to the Iraqi people known as the Yazidis that one day they’ll return home.

In the summer of 2014, Islamic State captured the city of Sinjar, the main city of the Yazidi people, forcing women into sex slavery and training boys to become ISIS fighters.

In just one day, thousands of Yazidis went from living in their ancient homeland to a refugee camp.

After ISIS captured Sinjar, most Yazidis were displaced to refugee camps, some housing as many as 20,000. Some of the refugees made harrowing escapes from the hands of ISIS.

‘He Treated Me Like an Animal’

One 19-year-old woman we named “Nazda” to protect her identity, told CBN News none of the girls went willingly.

“So when they were selling us girls, the buyer would come in to take his slave,” Nazda recalled. “If any of us refused, they would beat us very badly. No one went with the buyers willingly.”

Nazda spent 10 months as a sex slave of an Arab man after ISIS sold her for the equivalent of $800.

“The man was really, really bad. He treated me like an animal,” she said. “He had four wives and they had no sympathy for me. I was beaten and treated very badly.””

Witness , however those kind of attacks have existed almost at the beginning of Israel in 1947 .Very sad and a big concern . Not necessarily linked to ISS

Some of have wondered why Israel l has not already taken the battle to the Islamic State sending in their armies ?

OK, I’ll bite.

Witness, I realise as you are a member of the AOG our biblical interpretation principles and practices are likely to be different at key points and moments. Nonetheless, I like Isaiah chapters 40-55, including that particular verse and I draw regular inspiration and instruction from it. Nonetheless, I’m intrigued at how you have ‘plonked” Isaiah 41:10 down here, as if it has some direct and immediate significance when, in the first instance it was directed to the exiled Jewish community during the last years of the Babylonian Captivity (approximately 540 B.C.).

As “a text without a context is nothing but a pretext”, and “a text cannot mean what it never meant”, perhaps you’d like to enlighten us how that original context relates to the current situation, and, more importantly, to whom does it immediately apply (Kiwi Christians? The modern secular state of Israel? Kiwiblog readers? New Zealanders?)…especially when your citation of the text would seem to imply there is some pressing application that fits the context of our present discussions (Christmas observance? Muslim immigration? US Republican candidates?).

This should be interesting, although I suspect, when seeking to “engage” with a Pentecostal, I know what I’m going to get in response…

Re the Cairns case. I saw the reported comments from the Judge and was a little surprised. But I have not followed the case in detail — isn’t Cairns up for perjury and not match fixing, as such ?
