I was asked to name 19 Better NZ rugby players than McCheat. Apart from the GREAT Michael Jones the rest are in no order, had they been so then Ken Gray would be at number two in my book. There are of course far more than twenty five players who are all much better than the current NZ captain, Scott and Wallace.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the clarification. Yes, Ken Gray had all the skills – propping on both sides of the scrum, devastating running with the ball in hand, second-phase play at which the 1960s All Blacks were utterly dominant, and a great front-of-the-lineout ball winner (and he effectively won us a test in Wellington playing into the wind in the second against the ‘Boks in 1965 doing just that).

However, it would have been interesting to see how he would have coped with the re-vamped scrummaging techniques his Irish contemporary, Ray McLoughlin introduced here with the 1971 Lions. That was the series were 14-stone ‘Mighty Mouse’ Ian McLachlan made 18 stone ‘Jas’ Muller look like Mickey Mouse in the scrums, simply by superior technique.

Michael Jones – for sheer athleticism, absolutely. An absolute natural at everything he did. But here’s the thing – I don’t know if Jones ever developed/grew as a player. His speed was good enough to get him out of trouble not running the right defensive line onto the no. 10. Whereas McCaw, with almost similar athleticism as Jones (courtesy of hard work rather than quite as much natural ability), has, like Mourie, grown as a player. McCaw uses both instinctive ability and clinical assessment. That game he played against Australia in 2006 was the first time I said, “Hmm. I know Mourie was great, and I know I always thought Michael Niko Jones would be the greatest no. 7 I ever saw, but maybe, just maybe, I’ve seen someone even greater…”

Since then McCaw has done nothing to dispel the possibility he maybe equal to, maybe even better than the Iceman.

But ya pays yer money and ya takes yer pick…

I think Michael Jones was the best I saw but then the Old Timers talk about Kirkpatrick,Tremain and Waka Nathan and you realise things aren’t so clear cut!

Flankers also look much,much better when they are playing on the dominant pack..when a guy is playing his skin out in a beaten pack that’s when I take notice..(For that reason I rate Dusautoir very,very highly)

I’d like to think that I’m an old-fashioned New Zealand rugby supporter, which means I support rugby first, and New Zealand second.

I’ll be cheering like hell for the ABs tomorrow, but just as the Springbok supporters demonstrated last weekend, I’d like to think that if we lose, I’ll do so with good grace and no complaints, and I’ll give the Wallabies their dues.

Put it this way – the last two times they put us out of the World Cup (1991 and 2003), there was no argument from me they were decisively the better team on both occasions.

Its pretty bloody amusing that Longknives thinks there is a collusion in World Rugby involving the All Blacks. South Africa vs ABs last week – 6 penalties vs 14 against. Yeah I see your point. If it wasnt for Dan Carters drop goal we would have lost due to the ref.

Umm, not when you dig a bit deeper into some of the informed comment of the time.

For example, with the ball in hand, two wide of the ruck Ian Kirkpatrick was the most magnificent and unstoppable thing there ever was on a football field, except for Maybe Maurice Brownlie and Peter Jones – or Springbok Frik du Preez.

But going backwards, Kirkpatrick didn’t read the game so well, and his athleticism didn’t stretch beyond ordinary dexterity, especially when it came to corner flagging. He was, for instance, decisively out-played by Springbok Piet Greyling in most of the 1970 series

Waka Nathan – a natural, like Michael Jones, who played like it to. He needed to be in a backrow with Tremain and John Graham or Brian Lochore to cover his weaknesses – or, more likely, their strengths complemented one another. Also, sadly, Nathan never consistently reached his best due to injuries.

Tremain – a super player, did so much cleaning up. and would often peel from the back of the lineout and take the ball from the no, 2 jumper and smash over the advantage line. Plus he was devastating like Kirkpatrick with the ball in hand (both scored over 100 first class tries). And a great senior-pro (as was big bruv’s favourite, Ken Gray in that same era).

All three played in the era of left-right, rather than openside-blindside flankers, but if playing today, Nathan would be a no. 7, and Tremain and Kirky no. 6s. And Tremain would rate the best of them, IMHO. I actually think he was the best blindside flanker we’ve ever had.

A scrum with Michael Jones on the open, Tremain on the blind and McCaw at no. 8 would do me fine!

You might- But the All Blacks and their supporters wouldn’t. They would launch an unprecedented attack on the Referee, Touch Judges, Ball Boys ending their careers in an instant..Which is why NZ -12 is a great bet!

Yep. Agreed. Simon Poidevin for most of his career against the All Blacks from 1980-1992 was in that category, to. Or going back a bit before then, the New Zealand born Wallaby Greg Davis (1963-72). And halfbacks are the same. Younger Aussies talk about Farr-Jones or Gregan as the best half back ever. Hell, they weren’t even the best Wallaby no. 9! That accolade belongs to Davis’ contemporary, Ken Catchpole.

Yep. Greatest game of rugby ever played that 1987 Australia France semi. I never used to think much of Alain Lorieux as a lock, but that was the game, with France down 9-3, and it seemed to be going the way you expected when he sparked it. From a defensive Australian lineout 5 metres from their own line, he literally reached in and ripped the ball off his opposite at number 2 in the lineout (Bill Campbell?) and then peeled around the front for the equalising try. From there the French flicked the switch all right!

But Poidevin was doing that sort of thing against Shaw and Mexted right from the moment he first encountered them in the 1980 series in Australia – which the Wallabies deservedly won. Although, and I’m sure you will find this amusing, the All Black team for the 3rd and deciding test of that series played despite illness which some of them later subsequently blamed on food poisoning courtesy of Aussie bookies! No, really, I am not making this up! The Aussie liaison manager, on being told the ‘proto-Suzie’ plot theory a few years later suggested it was more likely to be the Bluff oysters that were flown over to Sydney and which the team devoured on the Thursday night 😉

Thinking of flankers going backwards, I always thought one of the best and most under-rated we had in that regard was Mike Brewer. In 1994 against France in the first test in Christchurch, with both Michael Jones and Zinzan out with injury, he was the openside. We got done 22-8, and were going backwards all day. Afterwards all the supporters of Duane Monkley and Mark Carter were braying for their guys, but when you actually looked at the game more closely, Brewer, up against a great player like Laurent Cabannes, was one of our few good forwards that day.

Enjoy the game, Longknives…and may rugby be the winner, and thanks to the little ladies out the back – including Suzie – who put on the spread!

So here’s how it is going to pan out-

The All Blacks will do a ‘terrifying’ tongue-poking, googly-eyed Haka and will make throat slitting gestures at the Wallabies who will stand there quietly taking it (As the IRB rules outlined by the All Blacks dictate)
Following kick-off the Wallabies will make a storming start and will hit an early lead. McCaw will pull aside his good mate Nigel Owens for an urgent chat.
David Pocock will be having a stormer but unfortunately will leave the field after McCaw ‘accidentally’ smashes his face in with a knee..
Wallabies will lead at half time- Looking younger, fresher, fitter and the far superior all round side.
Nigel Owens will send a couple of Wallabies to the bin in the second half, McCaw will get several ‘final warnings’..But NZ will claw back
Nigel will continue to penalise the Wallabies off the park- With a few minutes to go he will penalise a Wallaby forward for coughing and give Dan Carter the shot at goal to win the Cup!
Dan misses- But don’t worry All Black fans- Nigel decides that the crowd noise was too distracting for poor wee Danny and gives him another shot! Dan nails this one- Glory!!

*Following the match Richie looks to the skies- What’s that? No it can’t be..It’s D4J coming to celebrate with Richie in his Glider!!

Flatmates wanted – ‘no Indians or Asians’

An ad for flatmates stating “no Indians or Asians” need apply has outraged and disappointed a community group.

“It’s shocking to hear about this ad,” NZ Indian Central Association president Harshadbhai Patel said.

Oh rubbish – the majority are not responsible for the actions of a few.

Patel said he would raise the ad at the association’s executive committee meeting in Wellington on November 10.

I hope Patel (for consistency) will also raise the other ads mentioned in the same article:

Some readers quickly suggested racial discrimination of various kinds might be common in ads for flatmates.

TradeMe currently had an ad for a property in Mt Roskill, Auckland, saying only an “Indian or Asian male” would be welcome.

A listing currently on TradeMe seeking flatmates for a Mangere Bridge house said only Indians were welcome.

“Please I am not meant to be racist here by writing Indians only,” the TradeMe user wrote on the listing for the four-bedroom house. “I am Indian and I believe Indians will be more comfortable with us.”

In Fenton Park, Rotorua, one TradeMe listing was even more specific.

The advertiser wanted an “Indian vegetarian girl” only for a room in the two-bedroom unit.

Antartica actually net gaining (not losing) ice mass from ice cap, and has been since last ice age.

According to the new analysis of satellite data, the Antarctic ice sheet showed a net gain of 112 billion tons of ice a year from 1992 to 2001. That net gain slowed to 82 billion tons of ice per year between 2003 and 2008.
“We’re essentially in agreement with other studies that show an increase in ice discharge in the Antarctic Peninsula and the Thwaites and Pine Island region of West Antarctica,” said Jay Zwally, a glaciologist with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and lead author of the study, which was published on Oct. 30 in the Journal of Glaciology. “Our main disagreement is for East Antarctica and the interior of West Antarctica – there, we see an ice gain that exceeds the losses in the other areas.” Zwally added that his team “measured small height changes over large areas, as well as the large changes observed over smaller areas.”

Coming from NASA Goddard that’ll piss the catastrophists right off. Because of course the science is settled and Tehre is going to be a metre of sea level rise REAL SOON NOW and anything that disagrees with thermaggedonist IPCC consensus is heresy and paid for by baby raping oil companies who hate Gaia.

love the fact that you think one study is settled science yet ignore the many that come to a different conclusion.

If you go to the ice information in the ipcc reports it includes other study’s with a similar conclusion and in fact doesn’t include the ice balance of east Antarctica in its estimates because of the uncertainty.
