This is a bloody outrage. I wonder if the judge would jail these two sisters if they named the paedophile who abused them. What message does this send to paedophiles?

The paedophile got off lightly with one year jail for multiple offending against two victims. It was not a one off minor offense.

When I first read your post I was thinking the judge must have good reasons, such as protecting other people.

But no, the judge is only trying to protect this criminal from facing up to his heinous crimes.

But, the judge doesn’t care, he’ll still go home with the 20k weekly pay check or whatever they get. No accountability.

Have just had a long em from friends in Canada. In short a couple of points.
They being of an a mature generations cannot believe that Canada has been stupid enough to elect a schoolteacher with a famous name as “Liberal” Prime Minister.
They are sure that big US Oil money is behind the push by the media, called “Tudeaumania” to get rid of the Prime Minister Harper who continually said no to the US interests such as pipelines across Canada to Alaskan Oil fields. And summation of US interests into Canada, particularly the close relationship with the very powerful US Unions.
The media have approached the election like they did with Obama mania – and look what that has done to the US.
Trudeau has promised he will tax the rich and spend spend spend – he says for three years – yea !

Heard that somewhere around here in recent times.

Socialism does not work but financial interests do – particularly with the US. In principle I support the new Pacific Partnership but having worked for a group of US financial interests in overseas Tax havens they will not sign the TPPC. It does not put the US first and they will never accept any agreement in which they are not dominant.
Canada have just started to find that out.

Would have thought the trade union installed Labour Party Leader Angry Andrew Little, would have kept his head down and his mouth shut. Little put the boot into Judith Collins ,saying it was not a good look her promoting a car company. Angry Andy seems to have overlooked the fact that in the days of equal opportunity for employment matters for men and women ,Judith a lot more popular than him, yet his income of $250,000 per year for doing nothing.,and running in the polls at 8%, how come he is getting double the income approx. of Judith Collins.Then if Judith was a male would Little have put the boot into him.To make his comments even more nasty, Judith Collins won her electoral seat,Little was virtually run out of New Plymouth by voters, and had to settle as a plastic list MP, propped up by cloth capped Journalist union hacks.

I suggest that these only appear exciting, vibrant and fascinating because you are unfamiliar with these cultures. To the people of those cultures, their festivals are much the same as the Auckland Santa Parades of old (to native Aucklanders). The exotic only appears that way to those who are new to it.

Maybe familiarity really does breed contempt.

Other witnesses with no axe to grind happen to remember specific incidents that corroborate the lying, misguided, drunken, self-preserving and conspiratorial evidence of the aforesaid. And all this happened in the immediate vicinity of Chris Cairns? I mean, just how unlucky can the poor bastard get?

Another question. Am I allowed another question?
Paddy Gower announces on the Paul Henry show that he is not in the slightest bit interested in attending any centre-right fan-boy party with John Key. Is that how a journalist demonstrates ethical objectivity? Would he go to a labour day party with Andrew Little?

Tauhei – If ACT puts a candidate into Ohariu, it will split the centre-right to right vote three ways and deliver the seat to Ginny (or whoever Labour puts in as a candidate). If ACT does a deal with National to leave the way for ACT to stand, I would most probably vote for Peter Dunne and advise anyone else who would listen to do likewise. National has a virtual MP in Ohariu, that offers the best chance of easing votes off Peter Dunne.

Sounds like Chris Cairns needs an expert legal mind in his corner, who can find a more plausible defence. It would have been a lot easier had McCullum just reported the conversation as he was required wouldn’t it Nookin? Vincent is a prosecution witness, some could say the star witness others are entitled to think he is the foundation of sand on which the prosecution is built. Ricky Ponting confirming that he was present when Cairns rang McCullum, and I don’t know if there were any other details given apart from it being a conversation about a ‘business proposition’, might be harmless enough and still does not support why McCullum didn’t report the goings on. The orchestrations about ‘role models’ ‘hero I looked up to,’ are appearing a little contrived now. Who knows where the truth lies, at the outset I didn’t read much of the details because it appeared open and shut and was disappointing for a cricket fan, now however, it just seems murkier and murkier by the day. Just a small aside with absolutely no bearing on anything other than being anecdotal – someone I know saw Cairns cleaning bus stops in Auckland in recent times. Hard picture to reconcile with ‘fixing’ for 100s of thousands. However, I’m sure the prosecution will have the money trial. That will tell the story that no witness so far has managed going by the headlines.

There is something somewhat incongruous about an argument that suggests, in the first instance, that a conversation did not take place at all but, in the 2nd instance, that suggests that McCullum should not be believed because he was simply engaging in an exercise in self-preservation by failing to report a conversation that did take place. If McCullum was so intent on preserving his good brand, why did he not just simply say that the discussion with Cairns was completely equivocal and he did not take much out of it. Why has he put his neck right on the block even to the point of giving specific, detailed sworn testimony that exposes him to criticism, potential ICC sanction and, worse, criminal sanction?

Still tilting at windmills on behalf of the “it just might be possible so let’s call that ‘reasonable doubt'” legal defence playbook?: ‘Yeah, there could be a vast conspiracy involving international cricket administrators and players to discredit Cairns, all engineered by Modi – and he’s got the cash and motive’.

It was always going to boil to down to “he said – they said”.

And Cairns’ seemingly precarious financial position could be interpreted as indicative of his inability to manage his finances (he’s on his third marriage), thus making him more susceptible to generating income-streams from other sources.

So the breathalyser devices have been found to be faulty and there is a suggestion that some drink-drivers are in jail when they shouldn’t be. No doubt some lawyer (David G?) will correct me if I’m wrong, but I was under the impression that the breathalyser result only sends you to the blood test, which is what you get convicted on, so how does a faulty breathalyser machine change that?

Re name suppression case – rules regarding name suppression should be amended to that the judge has to indicate who benefits from name suppression. If the suppression benefits others (eg victims) and the ‘others’ get it lifted then it should fall away completely.

As I said Nookin, much better had McCullum simply reported the conversation as was required. If that had been the case the scenario regarding the conversations would be black and white rather than incongruous to (with?) other alleged facts. When news broke of high profile players going to be called to give evidence against Cairns there was a reasonable expectation that the evidence would be firm, unequivocal and had resulted in a timely reaction to the authorities in the first instance. That’s what I thought anyway. Now, who knows. As for McCullum pointing his neck on the block it could be argued he did that by not reporting the conversation. A bloody shame all round for the game.

Actually Kimbo Cairns seemingly precarious financial position was long after the alleged fixing took place. It will be good to see that resolved, as I’m sure you are confident it will on your windmill farm.

I know it’s possible and that people make extreme choices that are hazardous, Cairns taking his own legal action would fit that definition. He was either being truthful or extremely brash. For the reasons Nookin has pointed out whereby McCullum could be argued not to have acted brashly or to have invited criminal sanctions by not reporting the conversation earlier rather than later, the same applies to Cairns by opening the can of worms that the very rich Modi stirred.

But they are not a good chance to go through given they are 2-0 down in a best of 7 series against the NY Mets… and one of their losses includes their start starting pitcher Jake Arrieta taking a loss. Arrieta went 22-6 W/L on the regular season [that’s extremely good] and had been totally dominant the last few months..

But who knows though the Sox came from 3-0 down againsy the Yankees to make the World Series in the last decade…

sorry, you can’t prise a jar of homemade jam out of my husbands strong grip, he is very territorial about his jam.
You are right, homemade is so much better. His favorites are strawberry, and apricot made from those lovely rich dark apricots. My favourite is raspberry and tastes like the ripest berries straight off the cane.

Raspberry jam is very easy to make, give it a go. I use the Edmonds Cookbook recipe. Frozen raspberries are fine and they sell jam sugar in the supermarket. Just don’t eat it all at once or the food police will be after you.

The Red Sox is a more tortured history with many close but no cigar moments and always with the Great Evil, i.e. the New York Yankees, standing between the peoples of New Engalnd and Boston in particular from reaching the holy grail. The Cubs need to get the Goat and Bartman out of their pysche and it will ahppen eventually I suppose. odds against right now though…

But Theo Epstein has been party to miracles before [Theo is the Cubs GM and has built the current young and powerful team] as the Red Soxs manager when the Soxs finally won it all in 2004…

Actually, I mis-spoke as I see the Cubs also won a penant as late as 1945 (and another in 1918 – although the titles during the war years were in the absence of top line players).

Before that it was four National League penants from 1929 to 1938 – but they then had the bad luck to run into quality
Athletics (Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Groove),
Yankees (Babe Ruth calling his home run shot at Wrigley Field, or Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio in their prime)
or Tigers (Hank Greenberg)
opposition in the World Series.

Funnily enough I wrote a piece tying the Cubs together with Mr McFly and sent it to DPF, hoping he’d publish it today. However, it came to 2000 words and although that’s not long as articles go it’s probably too much for KB readers, who would greet news of a US baseball, curses, and McFly with a WTF moment.

But yeah, it sucks right now. Typical Cubs in that it has to be the ace pitcher who gets done over. Arrieta monsters the Pirates and the Cardinals as he has other teams in the latter half of the season – and then gets done over by the Mets for 3 runs in the first inning he pitches. What the hell?

Of course there is one thing about these curses, and it’s that they’re basically bullshit. We need bright migrants, and many of them are. However, the national strategy and the “diversity dividend” bullshit that goes with it bring in, at one end of the scale, a too-high proportion of energetic people who have made their money and now are lifestylers have found a remote, pleasant, peaceful country to relax in, and at the other end of the scale, too many people who want to get into the welfare trough.

I also surmise that a factor in passing on the story of the curse in Boston and Chicago’s case has been the traditionally predominant large Irish Catholic fan base in both cities. As a group they tend to be a bit superstitious compared to more functionally-minded WASPs.

George Will, as you may know, is also a Cubs supporter and has been since his youth. He grew up half way between Chicago and St Louis, and whereas his friends chose the Cardinals as their team and went on to enjoy happy lives, Will made the egregious youthful error of throwing his lot in with the Cubs.

So too is Dan OKrent, who dismissed Red Sox complaints before 2004: “Don’t give me this story of suffering, Red Sox fans! At least you get close. Follow the Cubs and then you’ll really know what pain is!”

Removing his name suppression after such a long period would have “disproportionately punitive consequences”, would cause extreme hardship and could repunish him. Recent publication of his name on the internet, and potential further publicity, had caused significant financial and personal problems and he had lost a job, Mander said. “These are consequences which are commonly associated with being convicted for sexual offending and would not ordinarily justify name suppression. However, for such repercussions to be visited upon a person for the first time some two decades after the criminal justice process has ended is, to my knowledge, unprecedented.”
