Agree Reid. Further, even if he had, the total sufferings of the Syrians would be less than they are guaranteed to be courtesy of the brutal ISIS. Even Sadam was better than what the Iraqiis live under now.

The issue I have with the people frequently here I refer to as sheeple nasska, is they never appear to wonder or truly question who in fact caused those issues you refer to, and given all the info available in a simple search, WTF is wrong with them, for never ever, under any circumstance, enquiring into said question?

I’m a fully paid up cynic. I may accept the date at the masthead of a newspaper as being correct but little else.

The journalists, like you, write about things as they see them. Also, like you, they have normal biases which effect the way they assess what may be the same information.

And both you & them are right some of the time. The trick is to know when.

Then I’ll be wrong too Reid. My point is that there’s no right answer to most of what happens…..only opinions. As you would probably concede there are as many forces at play creating a situation as there would be influencing those who interpret them.

I try and read and follow links and then research a Reid theory every week or so, I normally disagree but better to be challenged in your thoughts and beliefs and have a stronger understanding of them than to just cruise through life in a box…

Inaccurate reply above.

Kapuni urea plant still going strong; Marsden B overtaken by events, shit happens; Marsden Point refinery, while the expansion was an industrial relations disaster, still makes a positive contribution to NZ economic welfare (1.84b quickly whittled away by 80s inflation), Glenbrook has paid its way by now as has Tiwai with its foreign exchange earnings.

These projects were all started to save overseas funds, some didn’t work out, but overall I still count Think Big as a net positive benefit.

Of course, those possessed by the silly extremist view that government is always wrong will never be convinced by the evidence, as I’m sure you will illustrate.

If you think the union mess was just a little long on smokos you really have no idea.
The entire workforce was gold plated with incomes two or three times more than outside the think big jobs doing fuck all for it as well .
They would pull the pin when a sparky put a screw into wood because it was a carpenters job.
That is a true story five hundred odd guys on strike or lock out for almost a week because of a sparky putting a screw into a piece of wood at glenbroke.

So consistency is only important when it suits? So if we drill for more oil now at a big enough profit to the government and they spend the money on the right things, and then pay enough carbon tax later it’s all ok?? So the climate can be sold???

The end cost of the refinery was 1.84b. And it was set up to save foreign exchange.

The sale and disposal of many of those projects was distorted by ideology – political vandalism – and while the economics are turgid, nonetheless, there were considerable savings in FX in the days of a fixed exchange rate.

It’s all in the context. And your jealousy about rewards going to the workers – it’s called bargaining power – is just a distraction from the central point.

IMO they’ve been playing a contorted game. Attacking Daesh in Syria if they are threatening the Kurds. Leaving them alone in any attacks against Asad’s forces or the other rebels. The yanks also have a problem in Iraq supporting the Iraq govt which is more or less a puppet of Iran pretending to be friends with the US so the game there is helping the Kurds but don’t help the Iraq goverment too much in the fight against Daesh all while keeping the Turks on side who hate the Kurds . Also there is covert support for Daesh in the US main allies Turkey and SA. Putin has shown their game up for the stupidity it is.

Printing money to give it away on poorly costed projects resulted in.

inflation @ 20% leaving savers losing on money invested .

Government industry’s like post and rail used to hide unemployment with work forces ten times needed.

This made us noncompetitive when it came to exporting goods because the cost of business was far to high.

The actual service provided by these industry was rubbish.

A phone line was not much less than it is today in dollars and it was months to get connected.

The options you had was a single black phone that was it.

It cost more to freight from ak to chch than it did for the other side of the world.

A good percentage of goods by rail never even turned up.

You keep looking at the refinery marsden point was not the only think big project.

All had massive cost overruns.

Some lasted until the oil shock eased then closed.

I dont trust government to run industry or to pick winners .

The best solution to AGW I have seen is a revenue neutral carbon tax.

Place the cost to the commons directly upon the cause.

This would allow markets to come up with effective solutions.

With the carbon tax first being used to dismantle middle class welfare wff by dropping the tax rates for workers offsetting removing the subsidy for breeders.

We should not be encouraging people to breed by paying them to do so.

There are enough of us on this plant already.
