The judiciary by gender
Micky Savage at The Standard noted a tweet by Amy Adams celebrating the first time an all woman Court of Appeal bench sat.
However he tried to claim that it was little to do with Chris Finlayson, as two of the three Judges were merely promoted by Finlayson, not initially appointed by him.
I thought it would be interesting to look at the how the judiciary has changed over the last few years. We have some data from the two yearly census done by the HRC (2015 figures are calculated by me from the public websites).
- 2005 – 26.0%
- 2007 – 25.8%
- 2010 – 26.0%
- 2012 – 27.7%
- 2015 – 28.8%
So no real change from 2005 to 2010, but in the last five years there has been a slow but steady increase. As most law graduates are female, I expect this will continue.
Comparing the individual courts in 2007 to 2015, you get:
- District – from 27.4% to 30.2%
- High – from 16.7% to 24.4%
- Appeal – from 22.2% to 30.0%
- Supreme – from 20.0% to 40.0%
