I don’t get it. How could this woman’s power bill be so high? Even in the middle of winter my monthly power/gas bill combined is only around $250. And in the winter we have the gas fire on about six to eight hours a day.

Grant, you may not be aware but some link economic forecasting to Shemitah cycles and debt forgiveness. Thus there are both Jews and some Christians connecting an economic collapse to bible prophecy – America/West in moral and economic decline.

Thus it is some irony that currently Brazil and Russia have a problem with inflation and the Chinese have a problem with falling growth and many Chinese (more now) are looking to get their money out of China into foreign stocks or property.

Grant it’s not a question of IQ or being worldly-wise, it’s a question of how one’s thinking processes operate.

Of course everyone believes their own thinking processes to be perfectly logical, but that’s not the point. A statement such as:
All creatures with four legs can fly
Pigs have four legs
Therefore pigs can fly

is perfectly logical. It doesn’t happen to be true, but it’s perfectly logical.

The issue is the premise.

Now you guys start off your thinking with the premise that “x” cannot be true, whereas people like UT, EAD and I have trained ourselves to start our thinking off with the premise that “x” may not be true, it probably isn’t, but it might be, and what if it was.

That’s the central difference between our two camps.

And when you think about it from a perspicacity perspective, which of our two positions is the more intelligent and which is most likely to yield truth?

Now one imagines that many people like mm are about to come out with something childish like “Nazis from space isn’t true Reid so we’re right and you’re wrong.” Leaving aside mm’s slimy disingenuous nature, this is what happens.

But fact is, we’re not idiots, and we don’t think what slimy people like mm and Shawn allege we think, in any way.

But that’s how the debate always develops. Which envelopes the original point in fog.

It’s the Smart meters. Everyone is complaining about them on Facebook, especially the fact that there’s often no hot water because the power company can turn your hot water cylinder off whenever they want (usually at night), so in the morning there is no hot water. Because of this it takes extra energy (and money) to reheat the cylinder from cold every time. One comment on Facebook was from a guy who rang the power company and they admitted that power usage was too much one evening recently so they were turning off cylinders to compensate.

My advice, DON’T allow them to put in a Smart Meter. You don’t have to (although folks have come home from work to find them installed when they were out during the day). $400 is not out of the ordinary for people who have them installed.

They may curtail power to your water heater at peak periods .
This would usually be for a couple of hours in the evening when we all are home cooking dinner and warming the house at the same time .say 5:00 pm to 8:00pm. I Know this because I once worked in an industry were we actually shut down the plant at peak winter demand as it saved us money.
A modern electric storage water heater has this thing called insulation it should stay warm for at lest a day.

Not a conspiracy. People on the facebook group (my local area) were all complaining about high power costs and the hot water cylinder being turned off. Even our next-door neighbour who has one says they turn his cylinder off all the time. These people are not saying this for the fun of it.

It was a dark & stormy night. Leaden clouds scudded across a starless sky as the unmarked & unlit PowerCo van stopped outside Number 18.

Surreptitiously the linesmen inched their way up the driveway, their padded shoes making no sound on the sodden concrete. With torches concealed they worked quickly with a skill honed by long practice. The switchboard door closed with a barely audible click & they faded back into the shadows. Furtively they snuck back to the van & after pushing it 500 metres up the road they risked the noise of the starter & the motor sprung into life.

Back to HQ they drove, basking in the glow of another job well done.

Another smart meter……another $1200 power bill ready to be written!

Fletch, if you read the article linked to you would have noted that she had a smart meter installed after the high power bill.

On the general issue, apparently some of the old meters can under record power use, and so when they are replaced with new (smart meters) the power usage will go up.

One reason not to replace the old meter IF you have low power usage and think keeping power use down is easy – your old meter may be under recording.

“Smart” meters allow energy companies to shut down devices when there isn’t enough power to go around. Quite simply, like recycling bins, smoking rules, healthy living campaigns/taxes and political correctness, they are a measure of control.

It is simply a desperation to control the citizen instead of meet demand because lobby groups and the captive State refuse to accept that “they” are the biggest threat we have. What will they do when they’ve destroyed all functioning business? Who will pay the Socialists bar tabs then?”

@ EAD – I’m currently in Shanghai, and whilst there has been a drop in the stockmarket this week, you wouldn’t know it. The market was up 2% today here today, and investors are still 43% ahead of where they were this time last year.

BTW – we drove past a car dealer yesterday selling Rolls Royce, McLaren and Maserati, and if what we’ve seen in the Shanghai streets so far is any indication, he must be doing very well 😀

EAD, you seems to connect smart meters with control of supply. As if anticipating a shortage.

But with the southern smelter likely to close we don’t seem set for shortages. Power companies are reducing use of coal/gas fired stations as if anticipating this.

There is still population increase – balanced by better insulated homes.
Arrival of batteries for home energy storage (encouraging more solar units) – balanced by supply demand for battery powered cars
The historic risk of wind power supply being uneven may be superseded by network battery storage.

There is however still the risk of dry years, all the greater if the smelter closes and more of the national supply to the North Island comes from the southern lakes.

WiFi operates like microwaves, it transfers energy to water efficiently, and we’re roughly 50% water. Having a source that you can’t turn off in your home is a bad idea.

We always read poetry at my school anyway. It’s just that most of it was written on the back of the shithouse doors.

Actually, it’s John Key’s fault, as usual. Seems he sent a txt to the poor ladies smart meter (that hadn’t been installed yet) and upped the power bill. That was, of course, after he had gotten poor Cambo fired from TV3 which is old news. And worse, he still hasn’t sold those Bank of America shares! And those WiFi microwaves have melted the chocolate bar in my pocket as well. Maybe just pour myself another glass and get the popcorn out.

So, my admiriati, mikenmild and nostrowhatever have taken the time today to construct poems about me.

Thing is, neither of them seems able to grasp the point, ever.

One says that I am a homophobic because I published that the fact that 1 in 12 homo males in NZ is HIV positive and
that 1 in 20 is riddled with full blown AIDS and that there is currently an epidemic of syphillis should be publicised widely
in order that young gay males in Christchurch were aware of the risks in bending over. Their view seems to be…..
Not PC, keep that quiet.

The other, mikenmild, lacks any sense of humour at all, lacks the ability to recognise a joke, calls me a cat killer.

Most here are wildly read and educated political animals to some degree so even if there are young gay males they will be reasonably informed of the risks they take .
We dont need information about homosexual practice as it really is not a concern of ours.
Yet a few seem to be totally obsessed with anal intrusion for sexual pleasure .
I think they are the ones who should go do it rather than telling us endless about it the possible effects, the methods, how to get it etc etc etc .
