as of about ten minutes ago there over 870,000 views and climbing (in just over 24 Hours). this is is now viral video. I think the movie studio should have paid the NZRFU and Air NZ for the promotion, rather than the other way around.

I couldn’t disagree more. These videos are cringeworthy awful things. Te only worse one was the appalling Richard Simmons one. I wish they would just be simple and professional. I also wonder about how effectively they actually convey the safety briefing – there are a lot of distractions in these videos.

It’s only marginally less bad than the last bloody awful surfing one, and that’s probably only because it still has novelty value.

Memo to Air New Zealand (copy to MSM, Radio hosts everywhere, public event organisers, social commentators, et al) – 99.98% of ordinary real people can’t stand rap in any form. It’s dumb, irritating, and probably has a devolutionary effect on human DNA.

Just saying.

In any event I don’t think any of these things are really about safety. It’s self promotion ,by the airline by the advertisers etc.

I suppose as long as their punters are happy to pay for all this through their air fares ,who am I to complain?

A good ad.
Richie is a bit wooden though. Stan’s the man, but that white guy rapping (I assume he is an All Black) isn’t very good.

I fly a LOT. And the Air NZ safety videos are the only ones I watch every time. They are clever and fun and get people’s attention – except for the killjoys who _say_ that they want dry facts-only safety briefings. A question for those of you like that – do you actually pay attention to the safety briefings when they are given as straight read-from-the-standard-script deadpan recitations?

I am with DPF on this one. I am not a big rap fan, but this is right up there as one of Air NZ’s best. 😛

Oh, and the guys with horns are old Aussie rugby players. The credits at the end tell us – David Campese was one.

I like the Mastercard ads where Richie and David Farrar run around getting married and trying to win tickets to the cup. Richie is wooden in those as well though, which is probably why they drag him around like a prop.

But these aren’t really safety videos, are they?

Few people travelling on planes actually watch the safety briefing, so airlines (led by Air NZ’s fine examples) are using the videos for marketing purposes.

I think it is great. It will score 10 million plus views.

Why do air travelers need these stupid ‘safety’ videos anyway? I think Sir Robert Jones had it right. If a commercial passenger aircraft crashes there’s absolutely no chance that any of the passengers will be in a position to benefit from anything they had shoved at them by one of these stupid mindnumbing videos.

Just put a pamphlet in the seat pocket telling passengers how the life vests work. If you want to look at it, then its your choice, but FFS stop all this time wasting bullshit. Its just irritating nonsense.

All I’ve seen today is people on Facebook saying this is the worst video they’ve seen / terrible. Personally, I think it’s a bit silly and dated (I mean, if this was back in the 90s, the MIB theme might have at least been topical).

Over a million views of an airline safety video in just 48 hours…………
The absolute wowsers who have commented above just do not get quirky humour or the purpose of the video.
The constantly changing Air NZ COMPULSORY safety videos are unique in the world. They are a tourism marketing phenomenon and are admired world over by travel agents and those in the travel industry.
The self deprecatory, easy going, gentle humour of these videos conveys a great message to the world about how laid back we are here. We have record number of tourists and the numbers keep growing.
We have 4,608,062 (make that end 63 by the time you finish reading this) permanent residents in NZ -that’s all. http://www.stats.govt.nz/tools_and_services/population_clock.aspx
Last year 2,992,000 visitors arrived. a growth of 7%. Most of them are here for a few days or weeks.
Currently over 3,000,000 people will arrive in NZ in the next year. Our Minister of Tourism, John Key, certainly deserves our thanks.

The typical pessimism of Kiwis looks at this video and cringes with typical embarrassment feeling we will be scoffed at by foreigners. You could not be more wrong. Only a truly self confident airline could make such great videos.

I agree it is very good.. BUT if you fly every week, by the 10th showing it is mind numbing. By the 20th, I know every part and am counting down to the end. Remember it runs for a full 5 minutes. Personally I would vote for a bare bones 60 seconds safety briefing, done by the crew. It would be more effective.

Sponge, I couldn’t agree with you more. As you say they are distracting and unprofessional (paraphrased), and I don’t think they effectively convey the safety briefing, people watch them because they are entertaining to many, but the message gets lost in them trying to be clever and entertaining.

The Air NZ safety videos are just one example of the overall unprofessional attitude of Air NZ as a whole in my opinion.

Who cares that you don’t like them

Want to pay more money to ANZ because the don’t succeed.

Your commercial reality is stuffed.

ANZ have got it right.
Don’t like ANZ then fly with some of the other ratbags like Jetstar etc.

Just because I hate the childish videos does not mean I hate the airline.

I too am a ANZ shareholder and if it means they make money then I am all good with it. For all of that I am far from convinced that anyone will say “ANZ has those really quirky safety briefings – let fly them!” let alone “lets go to NZ because of their airlines videos!”.

Not sure it works that way – more a case of people just recognising your brand. Especially if people are watching it for fun outside of NZ.

On the topic of Bob Jones.
Yes he can well afford it so surprised he flew AirNZ in the first place, but it will certainly be costing a packet for his private jet with operating costs of US$800/hr, then you have the maintenance fees, landing fees etc etc

It is a brilliant brand positioning.
Clever parody – laconic yet has that sardonic kiwi touch.
It will work.
All their ads have been twee, whimsical but in the world of tourists they work.
No other airline has it’s mundane safety briefing mentioned.
Wowsers will not comprehend it.
Hope none of you has a front line tourist job.
We are not just selling scenery, but magic.
We actually don’t have hobbits in our folklore
but the country has got billions from them
lighten up.
