Local Govt rating income up 6%
Stats NZ has published accounts for all of local government for 2014.
They show taxation revenue up from $4.81 billion to $5.11 billion – a 6.2% increase – way beyond inflation. That’s an extra $300 million taken out of NZers pockets.
My proposal:
- Have Stats NZ calculate the inflation cost for Local Government (LGI)
- Pass a law saying no Council can increase their overall rates income by more than the LGI per capita
- If 10% of residents petition for a referendum, then a referendum can approve a rates increase higher than the above
