Interesting thread on this blog last week about the cost of modern compliance and safety on building sites – in particular scaffolding.

Isn’t it delicious? We like to crow about the reduced power of the Unions, those organs that held New Zealand back for so long…

But we’ve replaced them with a similar drag on any kind of progress! Armies of fluoro jacket wearing jobsworths.

National needs to articulate loudly to the electorate – especially Auckland – that their spiralling property prices aren’t simply due to an unspecified amount of overseas investors.

They need to explain that 100-odd k of a new build is waste, and another good 100k of any subdivision is going to be off to Len Brown’s Council.

In short, National should explain that they can’t help Aucklanders if they will continue to vote Labour Green or Brown. They can’t help unless they have the numbers to pass amendments to the RMA.

Simple.

Compare with the fuss, weeping and wailing, if a cop gets killed at work. Police work is not even being in the top 50 of dangerous jobs. More people are killed in other industries in a few years than the entire history of policing in NZ

“Fresh pressure went on private prison operator Serco last night with confirmation it sent a prisoner from Mt Eden prison to Manawatu without telling the Department of Corrections the inmate was seriously injured.”

“Corrections confirmed last night a prisoner being transferred to a prison in Manawatu needed urgent hospital attention on arrival because of the seriousness of injuries sustained in Serco-managed Mt Eden prison.”

“A spokeswoman also said Serco had not told the Department of Corrections the inmate was injured.”

I wonder at what point the police will become involved?

I have to pull you up there; you put words into my mouth.

I did not say beat up and brutalise – you can well imagine (well obviously you can’t, I’m thinking silver spoon / leafy suburb) what it takes to hold down a 135 kg mad rock ape.

Just like the Police, Corrections staff have to treat prisoners like they are made of expensive, cut crystal glass.

Hence they are forever worried about the cameras that record everything and are everywhere. My point is, in days gone by before cameras were widespread and we let go of any kind of common sense, violence was met by crushing strength and power.

Not beating the shit out of prisoners like you may have seen in a movie. The real world is nothing like The Shawshank redemption. But according to my mate from the department, they can’t effectively do the job they know how to do and want to do, and the prisoners take every advantage.

Simon: I don’t entirely disagree with you and my National vote is hanging by a thread. One thing that will sever the tie completely is if National crumble and give prisoners the vote. I predict that at the time of our next election any party to the Right will have a mountain of ammunition to draw on due to National’s abject failure in connecting with their voter base. Our personal freedoms have been eroded in the last 7 years starting with Bradford’s Bill, the foreshore and seabed, draconian building compliance laws, and Maori ‘recognition’ being forced into every aspect of government funded services. There appears to be a movement away from socialism in many of our Western allies, and I can only pray that this trend takes hold in NZ.

Agree wholeheartedly with your 8.04 about compliance .It is killing off small business and corporates don’t care as it removes competition and they treat it as a cost.

Disagree with the RMA bit.

What urgently needs changing is the Local Government Act and all Acts need to have reference to the Treaty removed.

Well put, Inandout @8:59. This National Government is stretching to breaking point the loyalty of its traditional supporters.

It’s not so much the big-picture economic management stuff that’s the problem (other than failure to control adequately the size of the bureaucracy and the increasingly questionable salaries paid within it), but all the wider influences (e.g. the RMA, Health & Safety overload, immersion in Treaty rights, delays in the Courts, political correctness, non-mandated immigration controls …….. the list goes on.

And I agree with you about “National’s abject failure in connecting with their voter base”. There seems to be a view in the party that professionally-drafted newsletters and whizzo messages across social media are enough to preserve that base. The art of listening (willingly) to the electorate is fading with each year in office.

Kelvin Davis’s original complaint was about filmed violence and drug taking in prisons. The transfer off records was added in the subsequent days. And if you actually bothered to read the articles, you would find that they were about similar situations. I also note that Mr Davis saw nothing wrong with other prisons, despite their high violence levels.

Developers of Izone business park at Rolleston, 20km south of Christchurch, say they are two years ahead of schedule. They are now launching the next planned stage of the 180ha development.

One of the obvious reasons for the success of the park are the prices. A price list obtained by NBR shows lots being advertised for $125 a square metre up to $160 a square metre. According to an industrial specialist Greg Mann, the price of similar land closer to the city at Wigram is $300-350 a square metre and at Hornby $225 a square metre.

Mr Mann has just moved from NAI Harcourts to Bayleys where he will continue to specialise in industrial leasing. But he predicts the market for development land will ease off, given the large amount of rezoning and developement since 2011.

Meanwhile, Izone is releasing 17 lots over 41ha, one of them sold. They are located opposite Port of Tauranga’s 15ha freight hub Metroport Christchurch, which opens shortly. Lyttelton Port has also bought 27ha with plans for a similar freight hub.

Izone is owned by Selwyn District Council and is currently home to more than 60 businesses, with more scheduled to open in coming months.

Another way Selwyn District has undercut its city rival is by waiving development contributions, which often represent a major component of new project budgets. Although Selwyn District is a party to the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Authority, set up to coordinate sprawling development and transport, it competes with the city and has proved more nimble at consent processing in the post-earthquake era. The GCUDA continues to sit at the Christchurch civic offices although its purpose is less clear and it appears to mainly accept duplicate council reports on such things as transport, land use reviews and other planning reports.

Maybe not now since Northland, but before that for 6.5 years they had the numbers.

This is why some of us don’t rate Key at all.

Success in politics is NOT about being popular, it’s about doing the right thing. e.g. reforming the RMA and other P.C. twaddle.

But Key hasn’t done that, he has never even TRIED to do that, even when he COULD have.

When you consider the extraordinary chances he was handed when he entered, with the GFC entrancing the whole world, which he could have used as a rationale to do so much and yet he did absolutely nothing; it’s really a case of ‘never in the field of politics has a PM done so little for so many when there was so much opportunity.’

He’s bloody lucky but he’s not politically skillful, he’s decidedly average. The only people who think he’s skilled are people who conflate popularity with success in politics. Which includes almost everyone in the National party and many on this blog. But a skilled political historian once the dust settles on this time will take one look at what actually happened here and tear him a new one. You wait for 2020 for that to be published, and you watch all the media idiots look askance at how dreadful this historian was to tear the beloved Key a new one and in so many different ways, too… Of course the media idiots aren’t howling because of that, they’re howling because said historian has suddenly exposed all the stories and scandals the media should have done themselves at the time, if only one or two of them knew what the fuck they were doing, but that had never happened, back in those days.

The Fed’s policy of monetizing one trillion dollars of bonds annually put pressure on the US dollar, the value of which declined in terms of gold. When gold hit $1,900 per ounce in 2011, the Federal Reserve realized that $2,000 per ounce could have a psychological impact that would spread into the dollar’s exchange rate with other currencies, resulting in a run on the dollar as both foreign and domestic holders sold dollars to avoid the fall in value. Once this realization hit, the manipulation of the gold price moved beyond central bank leasing of gold to bullion dealers in order to create an artificial market supply to absorb demand that otherwise would have pushed gold prices higher. The manipulation consists of the Fed using bullion banks as its agents to sell naked gold shorts in the New York Comex futures market. Short selling drives down the gold price, triggers stop-loss orders and margin calls, and scares participants out of the gold trusts. The bullion banks purchase the deserted shares and present them to the trusts for redemption in bullion. The bullion can then be sold in the London physical gold market, where the sales both ratify the lower price that short-selling achieved on the Comex floor and provide a supply of bullion to meet Asian demands for physical gold as opposed to paper claims on gold.

Agreed. The militant “New Atheism” functions psychologically as a religion for it’s followers, and one that is about as intolerant and irrational as it gets. You only have to view the mouth foaming, hate-filled ranting that it’s followers engage in to see that.

I accept that religion is not alone in causing terrible outcomes. The problem ( I think you alluded to) is ideology. We only need to look at the ideology of communism in China, Cambodia, USSR etc.

My view is; Ideology is okay as an ideal, but should never be put before outcomes for people. Ideology should be a method not a result.

Representatives from Coca-Cola, Ford Motor Co. and Xerox say they’ve asked Planned Parenthood to remove their names as corporate donors to the embattled organization.

The move follows a Daily Signal report revealing the names of 41 companies that Planned Parenthood listed as donors. That list, which was featured on Planned Parenthood’s website, has since been removed.

This latest development comes in the wake of two undercover videos that showed Planned Parenthood executives talking about the sale of fetal body parts. Planned Parenthood is facing both federal and state investigations—and the possibility of losing taxpayer funding.

Earlier this week, The Daily Signal used information from 2nd Vote to publish the names of 41 companies listed by Planned Parenthood as contributors. So, Penny, out protesting again, good on you, and wow, thanks for coming in to tell us all about it. Your posts on all your protesting and what you have done in that regard leads me to an interesting observation.

I have noticed that those who like to take advantage of the freedom to protest and publicise their protest actions, are most likely to be the one’s that don’t do anything to defend that same freedom and right for those they disagree with, and those that are most likely to take action to defend and ensure the continuity of your right to protest, and your freedom to do it peacefully (regardless of whether they agree with you or not), are those less likely to gloat and boast about their actions.

What about you Penny? You tell us all about how you take advantage of the freedom to peacefully protest in NZ, but what are you willing to do to defend the right of all New Zealanders to peacefully protest? What are you willing to do to defend the right of John Key, or Tim Groser to protest against you – or their supporters? Would you be willing to go to jail defending the rights of someone you disagree with politically – or even actively dislike? Would you be willing to defend their right to protest against something you believed in to the death?

Yep, that’s the Liberal spin I saw. Their argument is that PP was only covering costs, and not making a profit, and that, supposedly, the videos are edited to hide this. Color me skeptical given the amount of self-damming evidence that has already been revealed.

The problem for PP is, that to most decent people, and certainly most Americans, selling baby body parts to “cover costs” rather than make a profit, is still despicable, sick and evil.

Shorn, you forgot to show the Israeli proxy US invasions today More countries (way more) than were invaded in the second world war. All for the jews lust for death. (They have the filthy goy do their dirty work since goy are bound for hell anyway)
