Call me opinionated and argumentative:

Heh. “allow” is often misused like that, and dictionaries often reflect the actual usage rather than the correct usage.

allow (v.)
early 14c., allouen, “to commend, praise; approve of, be pleased with; appreciate the value of;” also, “take into account or give credit for,” also, in law and philosophy, “recognize, admit as valid” (a privilege, an excuse, a statement, etc.). From late 14c. as “sanction or permit; condone;” in business use from early 15c.

And there are lots of words whose meanings have changed over time. It’s not misuse to use them in their current accepted usage.

Much of this “accepted” usage originated with misuse of the original words. The way that the common meaning changes over time can give you an indication of how society has changed.

For example:

nice (adj.)
late 13c., “foolish, stupid, senseless,” from Old French nice (12c.) “careless, clumsy; weak; poor, needy; simple, stupid, silly, foolish,” from Latin nescius “ignorant, unaware,” literally “not-knowing,” from ne- “not” (see un-) + stem of scire “to know” (see science).

Nice people are appeasers, and as such they are easy to push around. The idea that being nice is a good thing contains the cultural subtext that it is O.K. to be weak or foolish, it represents the abdication of individual responsibility.

J.P. Morgan judges the NZ Superannuation Fund is the best of its type in the world.

Quite surprising given the fund’s $200 million loss (already written off) in a Portuguese bank through a Goldman Sachs-organised deal.

Two-thirds of the NZ Superannuation Fund’s investments are in passive index funds, so much of the performance noted by J.P. Morgan comes from performance of international sharemarkets. Perhaps the Government could do even better by scrapping the NZ Superannuation Fund management structure and just putting the money directly into passive funds.

The fund has some interesting investments within NZ. According to the 2014 annual report these include $20 million worth of dairy cows and a fifth of Z Energy.

Alas the physics, but not only is CO2 a trace compound in the Earths atmosphere it is in reality a poor “Greenhouse gas” i.e. it is not particularly good at holding the heat in compared to other elements and compounds, unlike water vapour which is an exceptionally effective GHG and temperature moderator due to its high specific heat (approx 1.9 joule/gram °C @10°C ) compared with that of CO2 (approx 0.8 joule/gram °C @10°C ) .

The high specific heat of liquid water is why we use it in our car’s radiators rather than CO2 of course.

It is also why Griffs scare mongering doesn’t work on me because I know that the amount of energy required to transform the all solid ice of the polar caps into liquid water is truly astronomical and while I have no doubt at some time in the far distant future this will undoubtedly occur it is so far off that it is highly improbable that there will be anyone around to observe it and that the present continent of Antarctica will have moved to somewhere close to the equator by the time this occurs

The meaning of words has been expanding, contracting, shifting, even reversing, for centuries. I’ve no idea when a sentence such as “Occasional gaps allow passage through the mountain” would have raised eyebrows.

“Many scholars are now more convinced about the historical reliability of the Gospels than was the case a generation ago, writes Prof Paul Trebilco. The Four Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – are clearly very important for the Christian faith. They are among our key sources of information about the life and teaching of Jesus and they also tell us what some of the earliest Christians believed about Jesus.

When we read a book, it helps to know what type of writing it is, since different forms of writing create different expectations in readers. A novel is different from science fiction, which is different from a collection of poetry, and so on.

Most scholars now argue the Gospels should be understood as biographies. Not the sort of biographies we would write today, but the sort of ”life” that someone would write in the first century. The Gospels show clear features of Graeco-Roman biographies, such as telling about the person through their words and actions, and a thematic rather than a strictly chronological approach to writing about a person’s life.

There is also very little direct comment by the biographer about the person (relying instead on what the person actually did and said), very little about family background, and a significant focus on the person’s death.

All these points are characteristics of first-century biographies, and also of the four Gospels.

A generation ago, scholars often argued the Gospel writers were not at all interested in giving ”the history of Jesus”.

It was thought they were only interested in writing about faith in him, and in giving early Christian preaching about him.

But clearly the Gospel writers were interested in what Jesus said and did. They had strong historical intentions and went about writing biographies of Jesus, according to the practices of their day.

We are right then to look to the Gospels as sources of historical information about Jesus’ words and deeds.”

A lot of it is based on the recent book climate: change the facts
How many actual publishing scientists involved in this book?
How many discredited loons like Watts dellingpole et al ?

FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE REAL CONDITIONS ON LIVE EXPORT SHIPS HAS BEEN MADE PUBLIC …

Last August, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) called for submissions into the operation of the Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock. 23 submissions have been published on the DAFF website (here):

One submission in particular has become especially public and has ‘gone viral’ within the animal advocacy community. The document was submitted by Dr Lynn Simpson, a shipboard veterinarian of 13 years experience, who had sailed on 57 ‘long and extra long haul’ voyages. It is anyone’s guess why it has taken Dr Simpson such a long time to come forward about the truly atrocious conditions faced by animals on live export ships on voyages that can be as long as 41 days, or almost 6 weeks, but her submission documents, and photographs, the desperate living conditions and misery the animals must endure for many weeks on these old Third World ships.

The key issues identified in the submission include:

• Hard deck, ‘cleated’ and bitumised flooring, totally unsuitable for animals who cannot or will not lie down on these surfaces, particularly when they are covered in excrement, compounded by insufficient cleaning and bedding, especially appalling on voyages of up to 6 weeks
• Overstocking in pens, meaning the animals cannot all lie down at once
• Animals who meet the ‘rejection criteria’ (ill and unfit animals) being loaded regardless, blind, lame, or otherwise ill or diseased
• Animals who do not meet the requirements of the importing country (for example, the voyage of the M/V Barkly Pearl from Geraldton to Mauritius on which cattle certified by an Australian veterinarian and cattle specialist as not being pregnant gave birth to calves on the ship and many more were found to be pregnant upon arrival in Mauritius, where it is unlawful to slaughter pregnant animals)
• Cattle with bleeding horn stumps being loaded
• Cattle far too heavy being loaded who then developed severe leg injuries from the shipboard conditions; other animals suffering from footrot and injuries compounded by septicaemia from being mired in urine and excrement for weeks
• Open, faulty drains pouring urine and excrement from animals on higher decks onto animals below
• Animals being unable to cool themselves because they are covered in faeces, despite the soaring temperatures in the northern hemisphere
• Inability to properly check the animals’ health and welfare because of overstocking, which also led to smothering of some animals
• Insufficient veterinary supplies to treat animals, including humane killing devices
• Unshorn sheep, whose condition could not be checked because of the thickness of their fleeces and the stocking densities
• High ammonia levels and suboptimal ventilation, causing not only a hazard to ship personnel, but especially to the animals, who live in this environment for long weeks on end, 24/7. This can cause severe eye irritation and pneumonia
• And possibly worst of all, depriving the animals of feed and water for 48 hours of more in the heat of the Middle East to meet trade (weight restrictions) requirements, and in circumstances where they could be further delayed by transports in the destination country.

Nostradamus – I think when Penny talks of “abusive, personal attacks on those whose views are not the same as theirs” she may have in mind such actions as these:

– stating that ACT stands for “Associated with Crooks and Thieves!”
– referring to John Banks as ‘dodgy’, the ‘Not-So-Honourable’ and stating he has all the class of a rat with a gold tooth
– displaying, on a website, a series of cartoons showing John Banks as a rat
– displaying, on a website, a cartoon showing John Key as a pig
– displaying, on a website, a cartoon showing John Banks as a pig wallowing in mud
– accusing John Key of faking sincerity
– defacing one’s political opponents’ billboards with one’s own signs, including one that calls John Banks the ‘best politician that money can buy’

What I can not understand nostra is I have asked Penny to be transparent about her donations repeatedly .
She has evaded the question with things like she declarers her donations towards her political campaigns to the ird .
That has never been my question .
On her blog she asks for donations towards her anti corruption campaign.
In the interest of transparency she should publish all the income she receives for scrutiny by any interested party .
To be campaigning against corruption she must be above suspicion and totally transparent her self .
Penny is not instead she is evasive about her finical affairs.

2. If the globe is warm, hold onto your hats an ice age is coming.

I know how to spend money; I know how to live on the smell of an oily rag….
I think I can see when money is being wasted on some ecological/environmental projects.
But I don’t get the jargon of business… I don’t know enough about the fiddle factors..
Its one of the reasons I read KB.

A question for you scientific types. IF the earth was heating I would suspect that we would begin to see more clouds, particularly dark moisture laden varieties, as water was evaporated from the world’s oceans. These block the sun’s heat….conversely if the world temperature cooled there would be less cloud & more warming..

Wouldn’t this mean that the earth has a built in self regulator?

The Dark Side Of Women

A woman was in town on a shopping trip.

She began her day finding the most perfect shoes in the first shop and a beautiful dress on sale in the second.

In the third, everything had just been reduced by 50 percent when her mobile phone rang.

It was a female doctor notifying her that her husband had just been in a terrible car accident and was in critical condition and in the ICU.

The woman told the doctor to inform her husband where she was and that she’d be there as soon as possible.

As she hung up she realized she was leaving what was shaping up to be her best day ever in the boutiques. She decided to get in a couple of more shops before heading to the hospital.

She ended up shopping the rest of the morning, finishing her trip with a cup of coffee and a beautiful chocolate cake slice, compliments of the last shop. She was jubilant.

Then she remembered her husband. Feeling guilty, she dashed to the hospital.

She saw the doctor in the corridor and asked about her husband’s condition. The lady doctor glared at her and shouted, ‘You went ahead and finished your shopping trip didn’t you! I hope you’re proud of yourself! While you were out for the past four hours enjoying yourself in town, your husband has been languishing in the Intensive Care Unit! It’s just as well you went ahead and finished, because it will more than likely be the last shopping trip you ever take!

For the rest of his life he will require round-the-clock care.

And YOU will now be his carer!

The woman was feeling so guilty she broke down and sobbed.

The lady doctor then chuckled and said, ‘I’m just pulling your leg…He’s dead. Show me what you bought.

Mick pulls his friend to the side and whispers, “Paddy, go look in the dictionary and see what gonorrhoea means. If it’s okay, give me the okay sign.”

So Paddy goes to look it up, comes back, and gives Mick the big Thumbs Up.

Three weeks later Mick is laid up in the infirmary with a terrible case of gonorrhoea.

Mick says to Paddy, “Why the hell did you give me the thumbs up?”

“Well Mick, in the dictionary, it says gonorrhoea affects only the privates.” Pointing to his stripe, he says, “and we’re L/Cpls now!”

No. More CO2 means more heat is trapped in the atmosphere generating more water vapour. Water vapour is the main greenhouse gas so more clouds = more energy absorbed as well. All part of the feedback loop.
