Euthanasia is one of those issues where there is no one right answer for every situation. You have two competing dangers you want to avoid: unnecessary death and unnecessary pain. The right framework is one that balances the two risks in any particular set of circumstances. At the moment the legal framework only concerns itself with unnecessary death but provides no protection from unnecessary, cruel and inhuman pain. We make people endure suffering no animal would be put through.

Those who question the “dangerous precedent” are employing a classic slippery slope fallacy. They acknowledge only one potential danger while ignoring the other and thus do not realize that the right approach is always a balancing act.

The managing director of one the newest KiwiSaver schemes, Amanah KiwiSaver Plan, said the Government’s decision to remove the $1000 kickstart incentive to join a scheme has disadvantaged many members of the Islamic community.

Auckland barrister Brian Henry said Kiwsaver had excluded the Islamic community because they had high ethical requirements for any investment and the incentive had been pulled soon after Amanah Kiwisaver had been launched in January by Ethnic Affairs minister Sam Lotu-Iiga.

Thank you. That is appalling that rate payers are supporting a commercial company with GRANTS. If the business proposal is so good why aren’t they going to the bank like any other company ?

I think the Zealandia example is a little different in that it is run like a Trust with a large volunteer input ( not very well run !!).

Large hotels support tourism in Wellington ( or any other city ) as well –do we just give them money ?

I would not mind if we were getting shares in the Company but anything else is c..p !!

Promotion of the scheme at mosques had been going only for a couple of months. It had 400 signed up members in that time and had $1.5 million in investments which were Sharia compliant and had been approved by a committee of Islamic leaders and scholars.

The contention, between Christians who want the world view of their faith established in the society in which they live and the secular society that places value on universal equality in society citizenship, is advocacy for their religion to be the arbiter of the moral order.

Not so long ago they would have sought to have their morality imposed in public law. Correctly they have realised that their faith was built on having a moral code higher than mere public law, so have moved on from this.

But they still want to declare that society’s equal citizenship does not make for moral right, the problem is that they want society to heed and act on that, whereas “government” of the equal society citizenship has no role in that.

Interesting. I note very scant description of method. As a little interesting note, I see that Venezuela has managed to solve its problem with inadequate supplies of toilet paper……Maduro and his cronies have managed to left the inflation rate to the point where paper Bolivar notes are now cheaper on a square by square basis than toilet paper – problem solved ! Of course the quality is, shall we say, a little sh*t and the cheap ink can leave embarrassing streaks, but the supply problem has gone.

Any of the remaining defenders of the socialist way and Venezuela’s brilliant economy care to attempt to spin this story more positively ?

Quite so. I have suffered from horrendous pain. It is not something to be wished on anyone, and suffering certainly doesn’t ‘make you a better human being’. Take it from me, if you wish to still function with some kind of life of meaning then the drugs don’t knock the pain sufficiently.
I have not felt pressure from anyone to push off this mortal coil early. Way in the future I wish to take that route if I deem it necessary.

Plane crashes are not minor sorts of affairs. They’re quite dramatic. People get slammed into the ground, or the water, at hundreds of kilometres an hour, pulverising their bodies into nothing more than unpalatable meaty pulps. As they should be.

Rugby League State Of Origin . . .

Not my cup of tea. Hypocritically I had the game on for its entire broadcast. After being taken aback by the carry-on in the tackles, I think I kept watching to see how often the tacklers have their arms around the head and neck of the ball carrier. It was every other tackle. It was a lot. I watched ball carriers ‘finished off’ with their heads and necks being pinned to the ground by a forearm. And / or pushed into the ground.

That seems to be the name of the game for defenders – two man tackle, typical tackle could be one goes low and actually stops the man, the other one goes high, wraps up the arms and upper body – and then safe in the knowledge that the ball carrier isn’t going anywhere or able to offload – how many points out of ten can you score for cheapshots, roughing up your opponent, sticking a knee or elbow into them, having them in a headlock, arms around the neck, chokehold, trying to crush their face into the ground – wow. Nice sport.

Is it a contact sport or a combat sport ? A bit of both ? Seems to me that looking at the tackles – looks like a fighting sport. And two or three on one is dumb. It looks like a two on one fight – not a good look. If you’re a ball carrier – there’s not a lot you can do to stop someone trying the triangle chokehold.

I don’t watch a lot of league so it was a eye-opening stuff compared to union. Arms around the neck in union and it’s penalty time. Seems legal in league to ‘finish off’ a tackle with arms around the throat / neck.

Oh well – it is what it is but I find it – what’s the word – total bullshit. How good can feel playing a game where you’re trying to pin someone’s neck / head to the ground ? It’s part contact sport part and part legal cheapshots from an approved list.

Who are the fans ? ‘Ah yeah – get him round the throat – yeah, yeah – drag him down – push his face into the turf – that’s the one.’ Don’t try to sell it as a nice wonderful family friendly game – it’s not. Maybe that’s what’s accepted for the Origin matches. At least in MMA and boxing it’s one on one and there’s no doubt what those sports are about.

Most of the information on Mark is correct, however, he never served in the NZ SAS. Mark served in RNZEME as a vehicle mechanic and was later commissioned and became an RNZEME workshop manager. His service in Oman is obscure but I have been told it was in a Workshop role. Prior to leaving the Army he also served with the Sinai peacekeeping group, as an Officer that would have been in an administrative role – there were Senior NCO’s there to do any real work that needed doing.

Mark has yet to correct the media when they print headlines along the lines of “Ex-SAS MP says/claims……..”. It would appear that like another [ex] WinstonFirst MP, Bill Gudgeon he is prepared to let this lie. It wont lie down if ANZMI get any evidence that he is claiming NZSAS service.

Gudgeon claimed SAS and Vietnam service, he had neither. That was written off by Mark as an ‘administrative error’.

“and the Sultan’s Special Force in the Dhofar. He retired as a Major in 1990.” Note , not special forces but ‘Special Force”. Some people could mistake that to mean special forces.

Rugby League is not for the faint hearted LR+C. Rules are now in place to try and stop serious injury but sometimes even now with the game so fast, there is still the odd injury were the defending player is put on report.
No throwing a punch or dangerous tackles has really cleaned the game up now, otherwise there are consequences !~

The Independent Police Complaints Authority has said the Police were right not to prosecute John Banks.

I was just listening to mad old Penny Bright on the radio say she is still pursuing this. The mad old bat should be told to piss off – she is not a contributing member of society, she doesn’t even pay rates.

He’s got a pretty good point though doesn’t he, oldpark.

Of course the slack-jawed yokels in the media and their moronic followers a.k.a. the NZ public get all confused and grasp the wrong end of the stick and think it’s all about him calling them cowards and that’s all the galloping mentals talk about, until the latest trending celeb tweet completely occupies their entire attention span and the whole thing gets lost in complete and utter confusion.

But what Mark was really saying was: now that ISIS is equipped with 105mm howitzers, Abrams tanks and all the rest of the Iraqi gear lovingly bequeathed to them by the long suffering US taxpayer, 100kms isn’t actually looking like it’s all that far away.

That’s the point he was making, and it’s a bloody good one, isn’t it.

But I see at least 22 members of the public on here didn’t understand it, either. What a surprise.

I read once that proper astrology is based on conception not birth date. Makes sense. Also makes sense if so, that they would obfuscate it to the ubiquitous misconception which persists worldwide on it.

Heard something interesting on RadioLive this arvo with the politics slot with Rodney and Chris Trotter.

This was Seymour’s action in naming Williamson as someone seeking a new home was a very foolish move by a boy in short shorts which will haunt him for the rest of his career.

According to Rodney, Williamson was merely musing to Brash about how wonderful it might be to start a new life and Don, apparently being unable to distinguish serious intent from mere wimpsy, approached the ACT board and asked: why not.

At that point Seymour went public, at a point where Williamson had only been talking to Brash offline and hadn’t even officially approached ACT.

Rodney’s point was that these discussions are embedded in politics, they happen all the time, “what would your position be if we put this clause in” etc and none of those are ever made public nor should they be and nor would Parliament work if they were.

And Seymour did it.

Rodney revealed when he first came in, no-one but no-one, trusted Dunne. He eventually found out this was because Dunne had done same as what Seymour has way back in the 90’s, and that mistrust had persisted ever since.

Motorists snapped with bicycles obscuring number plates on the back of vehicles could face a fine of up to $200.

It’s something that took Angelina Benn, of Lepperton, by surprise when she parked in New Plymouth’s central city recently.

“We were in town with our bikes on the bike rack,” she said. “We came back to the car and I thought my meter had expired because there was a ticket.

“I thought I wasn’t seeing straight when I saw the $200 fine.”

When her eyes unblurred and she read the description of what she’d done wrong she was confused.

“I sort of went, ‘eh?’ and then, of course, went around the back and went ‘but I’m parked’. If I was getting a ticket they could have looked at my front number plate.”

So she rang the New Plymouth District Council and was told the law was in the road code and she could buy a supplementary number plate for $20 to attach the the bike rack.

Council customer and regulatory services manager Mary-Anne Priest said it was not something meter readers had strictly enforced over the years.

“We haven’t really needed to because it hasn’t been a big issue, but with more and more people now putting bike racks on their cars it’s becoming a lot more prominent.”

“We have a statutory obligation to make sure that we enforce obscured number plates.”

Stinking bloody bike riders deserve far more than a $200 fine for obscuring their number plates. The offending bikes should be crushed with pedlars mounted! 🙂

When are the authorities going to bloody well require that folks on bikes have a number plate and pay ACC so that when they dash out in front of us law-abiding motorists, get squashed and damage our paint work we can get a proper claim into our insurance wallahs? 🙂

Come to think of it. The recent law that tells pedestrians that they can march out of side streets straight on the pedestrian crossing on the main road and that in all weather and light conditions motorists will automatically see them and be able to stop on a sixpence is perhaps another law that the fuckwits should re-visit.

I see it every day on Waiwhetu Road/Cambridge Terrace.

Once upon a time we used to have a road code that said that if a car was between the diamond and the crossing don’t step out in front of it. Now the law says if you are walking down the footpath and even thinking about maybe using the crossing the stupid bastard driving down the road towards you must slam his bloody anchors on! 🙂

Fuckwits seem to make our laws and fuckwits obey them.

Personally I have always believed might is right so never step out in front of cars. I always give way to trucks if driving a car.

As families – enjoying some summer sun with their kids during the half term break – relax on sun loungers on the beach, just a yards away scores of migrants have set up camp, sleeping on cardboard boxes with rubbish strewn everywhere.

My Lamborghini got a bloody scratch on it’s front bumper from some stupid tart (wearing a diamond wedding ring) that stepped out in front of me on a crossing just recently.

Thank goodness she never died so my QC’s could pursue her for the cost of repairs! 🙂

Cyclist….noun: Someone who spends 20 years moaning like a bitch because he wants a specially-built cycle path that’s set back from the traffic. Then, when the budget’s approved & the gold paved line of former car parks is finally built, he carries on cycling in the road.
