Lunch yesterday with a group of Irish friends- they were to a person absolutely stunned by the result of the same sex ‘marriage referendum in the land of their birth. Negatively stunned.

Democracy is democracy, of course, but I can’t help but wonder just how this issue was framed by the media and the politicians. I did see that the Irish Minister for ‘New Communities, Culture and Equality’ tweeted ‘FCK Yeaaahhh’ in response to the outcome. It kind of gives me a pretty good indication of the nature of the campaign of the ‘Yes’ lobby.

But then, that’s democracy.

These are the same people who didn’t raise a murmur or protest about the even much lower turnout at the 2014 mid term congressional of 34.34 % .

If you want to get onto the auckland property leader. Say youngish married i would find someone else in same position and each buy a house and then rent the other people’s house out. That way would get tax deductions for the loan payments.

The State has utterly fucked auckland housing but people dont have to wear the shit the state hands out.

I see that the Wellington lawyer who wants to be able to commit assisted suicide is before the Court today. She will be arguing that the relevant Crimes Act provisions are contrary to the Bill of Rights. That may be so, but i can’t for the life of me see what the Court could do about it. The Crimes Act is a statute, and the most the Judge could do is make a declaration of inconsistency. That wouldn’t mean the Crimes Act wasn’t still good law, so how it could legitimise the Doctor’s assistance is difficult to see. I am not denigrating the debate, which is an important and humane one, but I question whether the Courts are the right place for it to take place. I also, as an aside, criticise the breathless reporting on the topic which seems to have overlooked any proper analysis of this important issue.

And on another topic, on TV3 last night, Teina Pora was interviewed. We all know that his Police interview was found to be unreliable because of, amongst other things, his suggestibility and other inadequacies. So I was astonished to see his interviewer using some of the most leading questions I have ever seen to elicit “his” story. I appreciate it may be hard to get information from him in a coherent way but to draw out his criticism of the way the Police conducted his interviews by asking the type of questions which would have got those interviews chucked out in Court is to undermine the whole story.

He also said “his immediate priority was boosting the economy to the benefit of all.”

Which is what politicians should really be focusing on, not sideshows

Of course there are no lifeboats when the crash happens in September this year (as I’ve been warning for well over a year) because in our usurious debt as money system, previous “recoveries” have been bought about by lowering interest rates further and loading up on even more debt (up 40% worldwide since 2008 – so much for recovering from the GFC meme). Now when I look around the World:

1) Globally 45% of all Government bonds yield less than 1%.
2) Over 40% of European Sovereign bonds now have negative nominal yields..
3) German bunds have NEGATIVE yields as far out as 8 YEARS.

Of course there is one lifeboat, the asset that has no counterparty risk and has been the wealth preservation tool for those who understand what wealth really is for over 6000 years – Gold & Silver.

I don’t think it appropriate to give investment advice over a blog but personally:

I’ve spread my cash around several banks as there are 2 banks in NZ that are on very shaky financial ground.

10% in precious metals ( I have much more myself) but don’t recommend any more than that for others as it is a very long term insurance policy

Revisit shares in your portfolio that have bubbled higher as a result of easy money conditions rather than a solid underlying business

A little bit of cash outside the banking system is wise

Manolo, in terms of my attitude to Islam your a serial liar! Unlike you I don’t see the situation either in the Middle East and with our local Muslim community in Black and White terms like you and others do.

Things are a lot more complex and nuking the ME nor deporting our Muslim community are not sane or rational options.I do believe the problem is that your affected by a derangement syndrome, overlaid by paranoia , treatment options of which you need to seek as matter of urgency.

The truth is that many people have recognised the folly of importing more and more muslims given the experience
of all other western countries. muslims will not integrate into free societies as all other immigrants will.

Raising the question of the folly of importing more muslims is not suggesting that we deport all muslims already here.

If you are not a dishonest liar then you will be able to refer us to where all these people are calling for all muslims to be deported from New Zealand.

Manolo, my approach to combating ISIS can be gleaned from the link below. My initial and continuing thoughts focus on backing and bolstering those who have had some success against them and that is mainly the Kurds.
This includes boots on the ground to that end .

The next is to seek out a strategic alliance with iran, Assad and Shia.. However this has its problems in that it could alienate the Sunni Saudis etc. Thus it would be best to get them on side too.

Included in this would be continued and serious pressure on the Gulf states and Sunni elements therein to stop funding ISIS.

Allied with this is a serious attempt to understand the rise of ISIS and such things as combating their vitally important grasp of social media to spread their propaganda .

BTW the weakness of the Iraq army is reflected in the fact that Iraq is dominated by competing and divisive factions -namely Shia and Sunni etc .

I dont know if any of you saw the Sunday Herald, (my work gets the Herald ( as it minimises food spills on the tables in the tearoom I suspect) and in it was an advert by a Muslim group called Muslims for Peace protesting against ISIS and Extremism in general. (It was headed Eradicating Extremism in big capital letters)

So there ARE “Good Muslims”, and I thought their message deserved wider circulation than the sad little rag it was in. They seem to be in favour of equal rights for women, no compulsion of religion, and probably also not throwing gays off parking buildings or stoning them.

The ad included four links; http://www.alislam.org, http://www.khalifaofislam.com, http://www.MuslimsForPeace.org and http://www.ahmadiyya.org.nz

They are Ahmadiyya Muslims, a subset of Islam. Unfortunately they are rejected as kafirs or heretics by mainstream Islam (too peaceful perhaps) and are actively persecuted in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Bangladesh and other majority Muslim countries, actually being defined officially as not Muslim in some

stephie I’m not Manolo but what I suggest is that Israel should invade Saudi Arabia and use its own blood and treasure for once on cleaning up something it started, and once they’ve invaded it then they can capture all the pervs who’ve been raping the captured young girls in the ISIS-occupied territories and buying them in the slave markets and they can then give said pervs over to the Syrians who’ll know just what to do with them.
