I am pants at FB. I believe that Jamie Whyte would be a sensible choice as the Mayor of Auckland and would like to see some form of social media campaign to get the man onboard.

I have asked David Seymour who has told me that JW ‘does not want to do it’

Every now and again, one has to take one for the team; I believe that this is Jamie Whytes one.

Jamie Whyte IS a better option than goofy and any other idiot from the socialist apartheid parties in New Zealand; write to Jamie Whyte on jwhyte@woosh.co.nz to explain as to why he is suitable to be the man of the hour.

I believe a concerted effort will hopefully convince Jamie Whyte that his pragmatic approach to life can be harnessed for the common good of Auckland and that he has a role to play in politics with greater influence on New Zealand than any member of parliament could hope to achieve; what constituency has an electorate of 1.4 million people?

See distasteful Fairfax has now gone on to attack pensioners in promotion of their beloved Labour and Gutless Little Andy. They reckon pensioners are living in luxury, while the overbreeding for monetary recompense, they represent, are being disadvantaged at their expense. Well leeches of the left, the majority of pensioners have had the guts taxed out of them over the years, and most are deserving of a few crumbs, also most having to face interest rates on property purchases up to 30%. Come on lazy unemployable bludgers, stop breeding and start feeding what you have produced, don’t expect current taxpayers, and past overtaxed members of society, to subsidise your bedroom behaviour and your self-entitlement mentalities. Why does this media outlet always find the need to get comment from either useless taxpayer-funded academics, or fiscally challenged losers, like the current rainbow spokesman for finance, Robertson? I, personally, do not begrudge my taxes going to support retired pensioners, but I take exception to funding bludging layabouts, and so-called refugees, who are overloading our infrastructure, education, health, and housing, being unprepared to do anything to support themselves.

The over saturation we had of Maori crap re the Royal Visit made me wonder who draws up the program and why. It was a relief to see him do something normal when he was promoting the FIFA U20 world cup.

They are only 15 % of the population but you’d think it was 150 %.

Let us assume that Harry’s Maori immersion trip was a success.
If we are to become a Republic following the change of flag, to represent the All Blacks and Maori cultures, will he condescend to be our new President ?
There are actually some very eligible Maori princesses, in New Zealand despite what one regularly see in the media.
When we become a Republic that will cut the ties with the Crown so that is the end of the Treaty of Waitangi and the rorts taking place where the elite only see the benefits from the settlements, often created via a litany of lies and subterfuge.
But with Harry as President now that he can do the Haka, not that well, though, but he can practice in time, he can assume the role of the Crown to keep the gravy train running.
It will still be in 20 years time don’t forget as it is totally on going.

But its an Islamic World problem. Rohingyas are Muslims. Why can’t the super wealthy Gulf States or Saudi etc take the “refugees”? Heck they could even slip over the border back into Bangladesh which is where some of their ancestors came from and they would fit in easily.

Why is it always made out to be a Western issue to sort? A key pillar of Islam is CHARITY… but I don’t see Islamic states rushing in to help… Indonesia is the largest Islamic country on the planet and they don’t want their co-religionists

Abbotts policy on the boats is 100 percent correct. Genuine refugees are sitting in displacement camps all around the world waiting and waiting and waiting to make the head of the UN list to be given a refugee migration spot into Aussie or NZ etc. These people are economic migrants looking for opportunity in the main and are trying to queue jump genuine refugees using their or family wealth to grease the wheel. And if the Rohingyas in this case are fleeing genuine persecution then the Islamic world can look after them

Its not Australia or NZ’s problem

Paulus: The Maori King, who lives around Huntly, has 5 daughters, so there is surely a suitable one for Harry. He could have a poi dance date with each one and the strongest spinner would make an ideal mate. She would have to be able to put down a hangi, this would be an important requirement.

It is worth viewing an excellent TED talk by Roman Mars on what makes a good flag.

Among the sensible principles for us to think about is the advice that any design should be drawn on a rectangle about 2x3cms as that’s what it will look like from a distance.

I am beginning to think the only choice has to be a Kiwi. It’s as much us as the maple leaf is Canada.

Kim Dotcom and the movie industry don’t exactly get along. Dotcom is wanted by the FBI for allegedly pirating millions of dollars’ worth of copyrighted materials. You might remember when he had his house raided by authorities in 2012, when officials froze his bank accounts and confiscated much of his belongings because of the way his cloud storage service, Megaupload, was being used to make movies available online.

A little voice in me wondered if after lamenting the closure of the Kiwi run family dairy as a result of super markets these same SMs have a new tack to close more, now Asian run, dairies on the grounds that they are contributing to obese children?

Interesting development locally …our Chinese run takeaway with their collection of late model cars has given way to a kiwi bloke with a beat-up car carrying ‘old’ two letter registration and faded paint. The new occupiers have done a great job sprucing up the place inside and outside. One can only wish them well even if I rarely buy my evening meal.

Not so sure the Supermarkets are up to that but by putting self service kiosks in, they are certainly making it easier and quicker for people to make a smaller number of convenience purchases.
Judging by the number of people I saw in the queue last night just buying a bottle of wine, they are probably hurting liquor stores too.

If anyone wants a really good laugh visit the Flag Consideration Project to view some of the loopy designs that have been submitted. I love it. It shows that NZers have a great sense of humour and that many see the whole exercise as a joke. I look forward to seeing which of the submitted designs manage to make it onto the shortlisted 4 for the 1st referendum. Further fun times ahead.

And while I’m here – I’m a pensioner. I worked until I was 73. I own my own house. I have 3 children, none of whom have ever been on the dole. They all work, own their own houses and have one each for long term investment as well.
Two put themselves through university, and the third worked a long apprenticeship here and overseas to create a successful career.
All my working life I watched the advance of social welfare, until, by the time of my retirement I was paying for 3 solo mums and their families in taxes, so I was told.
Like many of my friends, my income has shrunk with low interest rates, and increased utility costs/rates/insurance has made balancing the budget a bit of an art form.
I am lucky to have good health, so no burden (so far) on the health system. Likewise the kids, and their kids too.

Like most older people I don’t regret having supported the solo mums, and I am very glad to be receiving the pension but you know what? I think I’ve earned it.

kowtow, ” only bicultural ” ? Not at all. I was referring to the important fact Prince Harry embracing things Maori which is part of our bicultural heritage.

An equal component is our multicultural heritage witnessed by immigration since the country was founded ,but more so recently from Asia and the ME etc. making our country such an exciting , vibrant and interesting society .

Gareth Morgan reminds us of this with his excellent article this last weekend about the need to change our flag. A flag that reflects more the reality of who we are today and not a colonial relic and cringe of British domination so beloved of our ancient fossilised monarchists here at KB and elsewhere ,

Does not seem to be any reaction anywhere to the Greens idea about Kiwisaver for kids. Is that because everyone except the Greens know that the kickstart 1k is already available for any child and all they are advocating really is that the member tax credit also be extended to under 18s?

This has to be the dopiest thing they have ever come up with. For poorer families to get the $500 govt subsidy they will have to come up with $1000 per child per year of their own. There is no way this will happen. Instead the entire benefit would go to wealthier families who have the spare dosh and are organised enough to put the lump sums in.

There may be some benefit in helping kids into tertiary study but there has to be a cheaper and better targeted way to achieve that.

If there needed to be any more proof that the Greens are completely clueless and should never be allowed any say in running anything this has provided it.

More nanny state. The Auckland Regional Public Health Service wants to stop dairies selling sweets to children because of the obesity problem. Ey? Dairies have been around for years, and there was not a problem back then.

Dairies shouldn’t be allowed to sell unhealthy food to children, an Auckland health body says.

A new report from Auckland Regional Public Health Service calls for limits on how many convenience stores can set up in one area, and what foods they can sell to children, Radio New Zealand reports.

Its clinical director Julia Peters said dairies are contributing to New Zealand’s obesity problem.

“You’ve only got to go into a dairy or a convenience store and you see what you are confronted with is sugar-sweetened fizzy beverages, chocolate bars, chippies, lollies et cetera,” she said.

The proposals were made in a report to obesity-fighting group Healthy Auckland Together.

The group plans to lobby for changes to the Resource Management Act to allow councils to govern where dairies, takeaways and other convenience stores can set up.

Ms Peters says the rules are needed to prevent future health woes for New Zealand’s young people.

“This is a serious situation, and these foods are no longer treat foods. They’ve become part of people’s everyday lives. That’s not where they should be.”

Three traffic officers have been disciplined and several others stand accused of botched checks of hand-held speed cameras, potentially leaving police exposed to legal action over speeding tickets.

The Herald on Sunday can reveal the investigation centres on allegations the officers failed to record how and when the devices were calibrated.

Hand-held speed cameras need to be calibrated and tested before use to ensure they accurately record speed and distance.

Police confirmed they were alerted to “reporting irregularities of three staff” in August 2014.

The investigation concerns three months from April to June 2014 – a year in which Waitemata police issued more than 194,000 speed tickets, the highest number in the country at more than 16,000 a month.

Last year, almost 82,000 speeding tickets were issued nationally each month by hand-held and fixed cameras. About $71 million was paid in fines, mostly for speeding.

Fletch: Dairies have been around for years, but the arrival of PIs and their mutton flapping habits, is relatively a more modern occurrence. Best the ethnicity of obese kids is taken into consideration, it is not a European problem.

WF – there is a suitable candidate for Mayor or Commissioner of Auckland. He is currently unable to take this up just yet – he is at the mercy of the courts. However the main downside to John Banks being in the job is the centre voters might lean towards the left in the next general election.

Fletch , yes it is debatable whether restricting lollies and sweets in Dairies is a desirable option. But I do take it you in the past favoured the restriction of smokes, artificial cannabis and alcohol in them ?

An Australian teenager who moved to Syria to fight with Islamic State insurgents has reportedly been killed.

It’s unclear whether Irfaan Hussein, 19, died in a bomb blast, or was beheaded by jihadists for trying to return to Australia, reports the Herald Sun.

Hussein’s family confirmed the death to the newspaper, but would not comment further. He has links to other young Australians accused of terrorism and shocked his country by moving to Syria last September or October.

In your OIA reply, (dated 14 May 2015) you state:

It was an opportunity to discuss with the Mayor, trade and economic issues relevant to Auckland.

In addition to the Mayor and me, the meeting was attended by an official from my office, one official from NZTE and one official from MFAT.

Several of the Mayor’s advisors also attended.

It was an informal exchange of information.

It was not therefore appropriate to include the public, media or other Councillors.

I have attached a briefing note prepared for me by officials in advance of the meeting.

INCLUDED IN THE (attached) ‘BRIEFING NOTE’:

“Purpose of the call.

This meeting is expected to focus entirely on trade and economic issues.

It is an opportunity for you to give the mayor an update on the FTA agenda and BGA, and discuss their relevance to Auckland’s economic growth aspirations.

The Mayor may use the meeting to brief you on the Council’s new Global Engagement Strategy, in particular, the Tripartite Economic Alliance and Auckland’s candidacy for the Lee Kwan Yew City Prize.

FTA roundup.

You may wish to give the mayor a summary of New Zealand’s various and ongoing and recently concluded FTA negotiations.

In particular, we believe the Mayor would be interested in updates on TPP, Korea, and the China upgrade.

We provide some background on the Mayor’s interest in TPP below.

* The Mayor has expressed interest in the economic benefits to Auckland that the TPP could deliver.

As New Zealand’s exporting hub, and its most internationally connected city, Auckland stands to derive significant benefits from TPP.

In particular, the fact that the TPP promises to better integrate New Zealand into a region accounting for 40% of global GDP, presents significant opportunities for Auckland’s exporters, and ultimately its residents.

While we have no projections of how the benefits of TPP might accrue specifically to Auckland, the mayor will be interested in in a high level discussion of progress in the negotiation, and of the projected benefits at national level, particularly in terms of export growth, investment flow and labour mobility.

It is also worth noting that in December 2012, the Regional and Development Committee of the Auckland Council passed a resolution which encouraged the Government to conclude negotiations on TPP in a way which achieved 12 objectives (see Appendix 1).

These objectives included achieving substantially increased access for agricultural exports, not increasing the costs of medical treatments, and not giving overseas investors more rights than domestic investors.

Mayor Brown was not present when this resolution was adopted, but he is known to be supportive of trade agreements in general.”

OIA Request:

1) Please provide the information which explains how a meeting between yourself as the Minister of Trade (in that official capacity), and the Mayor of Auckland, Len Brown (in that official capacity), for which the attached ‘briefing note’ was provided – can possibly be described as an ‘informal exchange of information’, from which:

– the details of this meeting were NOT minuted,

– elected Auckland Councillors were not informed and were excluded,

– the public and media were not informed and excluded,

can be compliant with the above-mentioned statutory requirements of the Public Records Act 2005.

B) This attached ‘briefing note’, included the following, in my view, significant ‘statistic’:

Appendix 1 : Economic and demographic statistics demonstrating the importance of Auckland to New Zealand’s international connectivity.

“Auckland’s population is projected to grow by approximately 700,000 people between 2011 and 2041 (assuming a medium populations growth scenario).”

As the initiating petitioner of the following petition, which resulted in a Social Services Select Committee of Inquiry, here is their Report:

The Social Services Committee has considered Petition 2011/64 of Penelope Mary Bright, requesting that Parliament decline to proceed with the Housing Accords and Special Housing Areas Bill until the lawfulness of the reliance of Auckland Council on the New Zealand Department of Statistics “high” population growth projections, instead of their “medium” population growth projections for the Auckland Spatial Plan, has been properly and independently investigated, taking into consideration that both Auckland Transport and Watercare Services Ltd, have relied upon “medium” population growth projections for their infrastructural asset management plans.

We heard and received evidence from the petitioner, but note that the matters she raised have been addressed publicly by the Auckland Council in statements posted on its website and issued to media.

The Auckland Council’s Chief Planning Officer has said that while Auckland may not grow by one million people by 2041 (the high-growth projection), Auckland Council is preparing for it.

The city has historically met the high-growth projection, and it is therefore prudent for the council to plan accordingly.

He said that the city needs to be prepared for, and infrastructure needs to be able to cope with, growth. He pointed out that the “Unitary Plan”, which is a part of the Auckland Spatial Plan, sets out only rules for development.

We understand that actual development would be undertaken only in response to demand. Regarding the use of alternative projections for higher- and lower-growth scenarios, we note that the council’s Chief Planning Officer has also said that it is prudent for the Auckland Council to provide for the highest likely population growth, and at the same time to be cautious to avoid over-investment.

He said that the council requires organisations it owns or controls to be cautious about capital spending ahead of time to avoid high borrowing, interest, and depreciation costs, and that any underspending on infrastructure could be addressed through regular budget reviews and incremental expansion of facilities such as wastewater treatment plants.

The Mayor of Auckland has also said that using the high-growth projection was the appropriate thing to do, and that the council should not be too conservative in their assumptions about population growth.

We consider that the response to this issue provided by the council appears reasonable, and therefore have no matters to bring to the attention of the House.

A new report written by scores of progressives economists has laid out an detailed agenda to dismantle, reverse and fix how the laws and policies governing the American economy are rigged to benefit the wealthiest individuals and largest corporoation.

The report, “Rewriting The Rules Of The American Economy: An Agenda For Growth and Shared Prosperity,” has just been released by The Roosevelt Institute, where Sen. Elizabeth Warren and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio joined its chief economist Joseph Stiglitz at its press conference.

“The American economy no longer works for most Americans… What is causing this dysfunction?” the report opens, then answering that question and making dozens of specific law and policy changes, listed below.

“Some point to technological change or globalization,” it said. “Some posit that government has shackled the free enterprise system and hobbled business. Some say that our economy is simply rewarding the risk takers and job creators who have earned the riches coming their way… None of these arguments gets it right.”

“Skyrocketing incomes for the 1 percent and stagnating wages for everyone else are not independent phenomena, but rather two symptoms of an impaired economy that rewards gaming the system more than it does hard work and investment,” it states. “The roots of this dysfunction lie deep in the rules and power dynamics that have prioritized corporate power and short-term gains at the expense of long-term innovation and growth. The outcomes shaped by these rules and power dynamics do not make the economy stronger; indeed, many make it weaker.”

What follows are 37 specific laws and policy changes to restore fairness and balance to the economy without undermining American capitalism.

“Some interesting international intrigue has been playing out in Europe. Russia’s the bad guy; the hero, improbably, is France. Early last year, as you may remember, Russia invaded and annexed Crimea, and ginned up a separatist movement in Ukraine’s east. Ever since, it has supported those separatists financially, with arms, and, sometimes, in battle. When Russia started violating “21st-century norms,” the West responded with 1930s-style anti-aggression sanctions.

As the EU worked out what its sanctions would include, France made sure they excluded two Mistral helicopter carriers that France was building, for which Russia had already paid nearly a billion dollars. The deadline for the carriers’ delivery to Russia was last September. As the deadline approached, France suffered a stroke of conscience and announced that it wouldn’t deliver the ships until there was a ceasefire, and movement toward a political settlement, in East Ukraine.

The September deadline came and went. Russia demanded the ships; France wouldn’t budge. Russia gave the French a new, December 1 deadline to turn the Mistrals over. That deadline came and went as well. “What’s the big deal about helicopter carriers?” you might wonder. After all, Russia already has two real aircraft carriers, and a third under construction.

The answer may appear in a wiki-leaked assessment of Russia’s Baltic fleet written by an intelligence company called Stratfor. Like Ukraine, each of the three Baltic countries — Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia — has a large ethnic-Russian population. NATO, and any number of geopoliticos in the U.S. and Europe, believe that after East Ukraine joins Crimea and northern Georgia in Russia’s new empire, Putin plans a pivot to the Baltics. Last September, Russia held an enormous war game along the Latvian and Lithuanian borders. And make no mistake, this is the first ratchet to the equivalent of the Russians deploying missiles in Cuba. And Aus is the meat in the sandwich.

It’s not quite as bad as Cuba, since China still has the buffer of the entire SE Asian peninsula, but these days, with the technology, that’s a psychological not real buffer and it can and will be traded away as the game commences.

nasska I don’t care whether or not you agree with it in this particular instance. All I’m saying is that in the past you have gone along with Shawn’s logic that the only thing that matters is the site and the content of the article is secondary by a long margin, to that. I think that logic is quite mental and have said so many many times but you and others have in the past argued very vigorously on that basis so if you want to be consistent and in logic you have to be consistent, then you have to take the consequences of the logic you yourself have chosen to follow.

Sorry about that, but that’s logic for ya.

If you have now seen the light and you don’t want to follow Shawn’s logic anymore then I quite understand and indeed that’s exactly what I’d recommend, but again, to be consistent, then the next time Shawn claims that the site’s veracity is more relevant than anything else, you’re going to need either to become a silent participant in the whole debate, or risk being inconsistent a.k.a. illogical if you wish to join in the braying, as you have in the past.

It’s over to you, I realise it’s a trivial point, but it’s a logical one, isn’t it.

And logic is what we use here to establish veracity, because if we don’t have that, what the fuck do we have.

That’s all I’m saying.

And BTW, I don’t give a shit. It’s Monday evening, the oven’s on for the chips, I’m about to have a great boston steak and I’m watching Lethal Weapon 2 on telly, with a red wine. Life is good.

I don’t march in lock step to Shawn’s logic anymore than I do with yours. The whole purpose of reading what is offered on blog sites is to get a perspective that is overlooked or deliberately ignored by the MSM.

You are at polar opposites on most things which is why I generally read comments from both of you. Most of the time I bin the crap but occasionally a nugget of logical info is there for the keen searcher.

Keep doing what you’re doing…..you won’t gather many disciples but you offer a different POV & this is good.
