In the interests of open debate I would rather use my own discretion in preference to censorship.

I haven’t seen anything censored.

DPF is one of the biggest champions of open debate in the New Zealand blogosphere.

But it’s his reputation that gets a hammering because of some of the rude, abusive and totally inconsiderate guests here who think it’s their place to shit in as much as they like.

Last year DPF considered giving it all up because it wasn’t worth the grief. That’s an ongoing possibility. And who would blame him if he decided to pull the plug?

Pointing out the sources you use and, along with your own stated views, showing what part of the political spectrum they point to, is not lying, just inconvenient to you.

Nasska,

Then we are unlikely to agree Lucia but I would point out that free speech is not a smorgasbord.

You’re either for it or against it…..there’s no centre ground.

I’ve always been a strong advocate for free speech… A couple of years ago, I was involved in a very heated conversation about free speech after questioning the result of a particular court case. That experience certainly helped me with being very clear about what free speech is and what it isn’t.

I won’t link to the relevant blog posts – that will bring a whole lot down on my head that have been quiet for a while, though one of them indicated last year they had not forgotten nor forgiven.

Anyway, my preference for dealing with someone like Kea would be short bursts of bannings, coupled with deleting offending comments. Kea seems to be many feathers short of a full bird brain, and a different way of dealing with him or her might be more effective.

But then, this isn’t my blog – it’s David Farrar’s. He has rules which I follow, but if I’m the only one following them and another is not – damn straight I will let him know once I have enough. As I did, it wasn’t just Shawn. I’m not masochistic enough to enjoy being a metaphorical punching bag.

NZ Herald business columnist Fran O’Sullivan has been appointed to the newly created position of NZME editorial director for business.

O’Sullivan has written a weekly column for the Business Herald since its inception in April 1997.

In her early journalistic career she was a political journalist in Wellington and subsequently an investigative journalist who broke many major business stories including the first articles that led to the Winebox Inquiry in both NBR and the Sydney Morning Herald.

O’Sullivan has specific expertise in relation to China where she has been a frequent visitor since the late 1990s and is a former editor of the National Business Review.

NZME chief executive Jane Hastings said O’Sullivan’s leadership and respected connections within the business community would further strengthen NZME’s business content.

Actually that’s not what I said Reid. What I said was that Russia has a long history of blaming the Jews, which is by the way a fact which has been commented on and written about extensively for decades.

You have heard of pogroms, right? Perhaps not. As I said you are not concerned with learning anything about real history.

If you spent more time reading real history, instead of getting yours from conspiracy web sites, you might learn something of value.

Here is some real history Reid.

Using the same debating tactics, what is your opinion on the following quotes by Ovadia Yoesf in his weekly Saturday Sermon in October 2010:

Yes he’s a piece of work alright. However I’m not moderating myself. I’ve gone 13 years without anything, now there’s a couple in a month. If DPF wants to ban me for accurately describing the personality of a zionist neocon archetype like Herles and a liar like stephie then I don’t really care.

However if DPF reads this then I’d ask him to bear in mind he doesn’t like it when other people put words into his mouth and pretend that he said or thinks such and such when he’s neither done nor said anything of the sort, so why on Earth does he think that any of we commenters appreciate it any better than he does?

Reid is staggeringly hypocritical on this issue Pete. His posts, long before I began confronting him, were filled with insults towards anyone who disagreed with his anti-Jewish rhetoric and paranoid conspiracy theories, often before anyone had even responded.

“Galloping mentals” is one of his favorites for people who do not think a cabal of Satanic Jews are trying to control the world and destroy Christianity.

Extremists and conspiracy theorists are often the most abusive people on this blog, and the fastest to whine if anyone dishes a little back.

But then, that’s extremists for you. It’s always one rule for them and another for everyone else.

If you want to know why it’s because I hate typing therefore I prefer to be pithy and pithy doesn’t accommodate flowery and gentle skirting round the point while one gently introduces the reader to the point you wish to make.

It just doesn’t.

But pithiness doesn’t equate to rudeness escept in profound dummies. I reserve rudeness for special people. Most people I’m not rude to. Ever noticed that? Thought not. But it’s true, isn’t it.

But getting back to the point, I’ve never implied you hold a position which you don’t, have I. I’ve told you you’re various things, but I’ve never implied that, have I. I’ve said that you’re a lightweight, and you are. I’ve said you’re various things, like a Dunne sycophant, and you are, but I’ve never said that “Pete thinks “x” when that “x” is something offensive like racism, sexism, or any other ism, have I.

I have noticed on this blog as a “Newby” that it is turning into the original WHALEOIL blog. Which is understandable because it is a very good forum to discuss topics, it’s a shame and really none of my business, but there are more important things to talk about than personal likes and dislikes towards one another. How about being a little more constructive and productive, you all appear to have very good brains, how about using them wisely to achieve something good. Reid repeatedly insisted that I believe in the Rapture, despite me making it clear I don’t.

Now IF I had used Dispentationalist sources and beliefs for my posts, that might have been a reasonable claim. But I don’t. Ever. So as I said, he is engaging in rank hypocrisy right now.

Reid on the other hand has, week in and week out, used neo-Nazi and rabidly anti-Jewish sources for his claims.

It is childish in the extreme to do so and then complain when someone points it out and suggests that, along with his own stated views, that does not reveal something about him.

You’re breaking my heart, Reid! In a manner of speaking.

As Shawn has said, it was him not me, and I’ll back that up. I have to get really annoyed to email DPF (remember my emotional nature?)

And no, never had to compete for that single-opening. Normally there was someone else. But if there wasn’t, such role would naturally fall to me, being the oldest of 6 kids, four of them brothers.

I, too, made a formal complaint about Kea, and I have no reservations in admitting it.

I haven’t complained about the offensive epithets that are put about, such as your favoured reference to Godnutters. Nor have I complained about being called a moron by someone else who is fond of using that term, even though it is explicitly in breach of the comments policy.

Kea’s behaviour, however, is far beyond being obnoxious (see my comment at 11.00).

You’re not out of order at all, and I agree with you.

The difficulty is human nature itself, and a minority who think their political views or their hatred of religion gives them a special right to engage in extreme abuse.

DPF is trying to improve things and clean the place up, but some people using the silly, high school level “nark” accusation are not helping that process.

I think a permanent on hand moderation team chosen from outside the commentator community might be a good idea.

Do I have an absolute right to refer to black people as niggers or coons, if I felt like doing so?

Do I have the absolute right to call a woman a stupid c**t, if she were to upset me?

If nothing else, good manners would prevent me. But, that aside, in a civilised society people have a right to be protected from extreme abuse.

Someone on KB (can’t remember who) once “outed” Kea as being an unemployed physicist called Marnie.

She denied it (let’s call her she), but I think she blew her cover when she posted a comment lamenting the passing of an obscure physicist few, if any, people other than fellow physicists would actually have heard of.

That comment was wrong of me, I agree. However it came long after I was subjected to very extreme personal abuse by the individual in question, including blatantly racist attacks on my ethnicity.

That does not make my response right, but there is a context to it.

Moderation works reasonably well as it is.
DPF doesn’t read all our babel religiously
Some things are against the rules and if you think some one has transgressed the rules needlessly the blogs moderation style is to email DPF to allow him the opportunity to moderate at his discretion.

At no point have I suggested that Kea was not offensive. He has an unfortunate tendency to lose the plot when the subjects of Zionism & Islam are raised.

Further, if someone made a libellous comment or stated something that could see DPF sued then I would have little hesitation in advising him of such. I have never made a complaint about anyone bashing religion, or using silly names like “Godnutters.”

That was not the issue with Kea, it was his extreme accusations towards Lucia, claiming she would just love to torture and mutilate non-Catholics.

Those kinds of accusations are not debating “heat.” They are vile and cowardly character assassinations on a public forum.

And to be fair, some of my fellow Christians here have not been any better.

Anyway, the issue is done and dusted, for three months anyway. I’m not commenting on it anymore, but moving on.

nasska – I’ve managed to stand up to the heat of the kitchen. But within the rules here I’m as free as anyone to say what I like and that includes calling abusive, vindictive and bullying behaviour as I see it.

If anyone wants an anything goes drunken back alley free for all type blog then they can try to find one or start their own.

As I understand it the fundamental aim of Kiwiblog is to provide an open political forum with a National political slant. A lot of the crap that goes on here is detrimental to National and it’s detrimental to DPF’s reputation, and both have taken significant hits over the last year due to ‘Dirty Politics’. Some here seem intent on proving to outsiders that KB is as bad as the most vocal critics claim. I think that’s extremely inconsiderate and selfish.

It’s got nothing much to do with kitchens and concrete. Everyone can sling cement around their own if that’s what they like.

Funny thedavincimode. You seem to have a selectiveness as to which truths should be flung in faces.

Shouldn’t an adult political forum be able to debate robustly without having to resort to the shit sort of flinging? Some of the worst ‘free speech’ here seems intent on shutting down and discrediting what they don’t want raised. Abuse and diversion are common tactics working against open debate.

Real libertarians/liberals are supposed to believe in private property rights. Free speech does not extend to private property. The owners of the property in question get to set the rules. This blog is DPF’s property, so those claiming libertarian or liberal free speech rights are contradicting their own claimed ideology.

Which is not a surprise as the claim that this is about free speech is disingenuous. What some are arguing for is not free speech in any liberal or libertarian sense, but the mythical “right” to behave like poorly reared adolescents and beat up on groups or people they don’t like.

Anyway, I said I was moving on so time to unplug.

It’s sad Kea just went too far. I found recent comments tedious and ignored them.

But kiwiblog seemed important to Kea and that means Kea should be important to kiwiblog. I don’t know how to translate that into some useful action but we are all deeply flawed and need forgiveness.

It’s easy to say one abides by the rules. I have no argument with that. But there’s something else going on here.

Perhaps someone could contact Kea via DPF. Just a thought.
