Sheesh; Matt Henry has taken to World Cup cricket like a duck to water. Three overs, two maidens, none for three and a fastest speed of 147km/h. The Saffers weren’t expecting that.

Rain favours Kiwis. 5th level bowlers may not be called upon if overs are reduced. Unlikely but … time will tell. (Based on what we got at Puhoi an hour ago the shower will last only 10 mins)

We’ll need enough rain for SA to lose overs and take our chances with Duckworth-Lewis. I’d rather chase 260 off 38 than whatever this will end up with after 50. 350 is the best we can hope for right now and that’s not something to hope for.

SPC – they will reduce overs and attempt to complete the match today, but carry on tomorrow with the reduced overs. At the moment I think that are down 4 overs, and will lose 1 more every 10 minutes. This helps New Zealand, I feel with D/L probably going to par at 240 runs at 38 overs when we were looking at getting 350 runs from 50.

Micheal, yeah apparently that is the way it is. The do it for crowd and TV reasons, rather than fairness to the teams and the competition.

However for mine if there is the back up day available – it should be the full 50 overs a side.

And if they reduce the overs for the New Zealand innings and they cannot complete it because of another rain delay, they then come back tomorrow to finish.

Far better to let them play their 50 overs and then see what is left for the reply and let the reply finish the next day. Thus both teams get an innings break. The team coming back after the rain delay and the team coming back the next day to conclude their reply.

Hey longknives, go fuck yourself. They knew the rain was coming so perhaps should have lifted the rate earlier. It’s all part of the game.

They have to do everything to finish the game today, even if it means reducing it to 20 overs. Rain has stopped, overs are being lost, but the game will finish today.

If there is no more play today, and the Saffies bat out their overs tomorrow and then we chase a 50 over target would be the fairest way to decide it.

After all both teams, us 6 times and them 3 times, have been eliminated on the day of the semi-final in the past, so it is one way for both teams to survive for another day at least.

We’ve passed the hour mark in terms of how long the players have been off at Eden Park. If they’ve not done already, I’d suggest they must be losing overs now.

If this isn’t confusing… if they can get a 20-over game in today (ie South Africa’s innings would be over, and New Zealand would face a revised target to chase from 20 overs), they will. But if not even 20 more overs are possible, we’ll all be back tomorrow – when the game will resume as normal with SA’s 39th over. Clear?”

Good thing for NZ if SA has some of their big scoring finish cut off.

Though I do think with a reserve day it’d make sense to finish one innings and then have the other the next day – in this instance the rules seem to be in our favour, so that’s a bit of luck.

1 kept them ahead of the DL target for 20 overs (a game then counts)
2. made it a 6 an over task for the other batsmen.

Provided they play themselves in and don’t charge to early, it is within reach.

I have been following this remotely from China, online from the postings here and at Stuff and Herald. I admit, when Taylor caused the runout, I thought “Ah sh*t! That’s it!” But WOW the Black Caps dug in, hung in there, and WON. On the second last ball! Damn close. What did someone say? The mark of a great team is when they win even when in difficult situations.

I think the Indians would be the easier of the two to beat at the MCG, but having said that would be hard to resist dealing to the Aussies on their home ground if we could pull it off.

@ lance Probably the best company “it” keeps so we wouldn’t want to suggest “it” hurts “its” friends. Some people are just not worth bothering about, but surely DPF could look a this mindless crap and sanction. Humour et al is always welcome to lighten the seriousness of some of these debates, but mindless ticking is just stupid. The only positive thing about the downticking is it eventually contracts some insidious comments so that less scrolling is necessary. (Meant in a caring sort of way, eh Penny?)
