I don’t find Penny’s use of ‘Lest we forget’ inappropriate, I find it offensive. As someone who has friends & colleagues in the armed forces, some of whom have lost more than one very good friend themselves, I see her using that phrase as showing the utmost disrespect to those that have chosen to serve their country, to defend the vulnerable, and to assist those in need through HADR efforts. People like Penny who show such contempt for the members of the NZDF are the first to demand the NZDF intervene in the Southern Oceans to stop the fishing, they are the first to criticise that the NZDF weren’t fast enough to respond in a disaster when they aren’t there immediately, and they will be the first to expect the help of the NZDF when they need it.

However, in saying that, I will say this (something said to me by a member of the NZDF), I may not agree with what they say, but I will defend their right to say it.

That quote shows the difference between people like Penny, and those that serve in uniform, they are willing to defend the right of someone to say things they find offensive, inappropriate and derogatory against their career choice. Those on the left in this country use that right to demand those in the NZDF be denied the opportunity to do the job they signed up for.

I’ve just scanned through the above and I’m left with this question.

Why do people offer responses to or comments about that awful, and evidently brainless, creature posting under the pseudonym “Penny Bright”?.

I would have thought that if people find her input unwelcome, or offensive – (Which it frequently is – And are you reading me Webmeister!!) – then the best way to deal with it is to ignore it and not dignify or encourage it with a response or comment.

I’ve read several of her posts and have yet to encounter therein anything of a realistically informative or interesting nature.

Its just “Look at me!! Look at me!!”

Well, no thank you dear, I’d really rather not!!

@ Wellygirl – well said. The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that Ms Bright is deliberately being offensive, and with the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing just a matter of weeks away, she knows it will get under people’s skins. That is about as low as one can get, and she should hang her head in shame.

Don’t be so precious Keeping Stock – there is nothing offensive about that comment – the writer is lamenting the cancerous growth of Auckland cities central Government which has expanded like a necrotic tumour to gain control over areas that were previously governed by local people.

Thanks KS.

I agree that I believe she is being deliberately offensive and baiting people here, it is an emotive thing for many, and for her to use that emotion to bait people makes her seem like a petty and nasty person – I don’t know her so won’t comment substantively on her personality, just how she comes across on this blog.

This year especially is very important to those that are a part of, and support the Defence community, and as you say KS she is picking something that will illicit a strong and emotional reaction.

On a personal note, I am disappointed that due to my job offshore I will not be able to commemorate ANZAC Day at the new memorial park in Wellington, nor will I be standing out in the Wellington weather selling poppies, however, I will still be involved and am looking forward to a new experience of a combined ANZAC Day service with the Australians in my new home, and with it being a Saturday this year I will not need to rush off to work after, but will be able to have a few drinks with Kiwi’s and Aussies alike.

Andrei, as the phrase Lest We Forget is used in connection to those that have fallen in service to our country, the context that Penny B has used it in is offensive to many with connections and links to the armed forces, and her use of it leading into what is an important occasion for the remembrance of our fallen defence personnel is by many seen as provocative. I, for one, do find it personally offensive and wrong, but I also respect her right to say it, just as she, and you, should to respect my (and others) right to be offended by the way she has used the phrase. It is not being precious to be offended by something that holds meaning being used out of context for nothing more than political point scoring, and to seemingly bait others.

He needs to learn that no one has a right to know these things unless they are involved in the actual operation. It is remarkably simple
Penny may have known “Least we forget” was overstating her point, but the moment she realized it offended or drew extra attention you were stuffed.
Then to suggest it is “reserved” for a higher meaning seals her use and it will probably be now cheapened by appearing with all her many other bumper sticker thoughts.

It is similar to the compulsive obsession that Penny holds in believing everyone should know the details concerning Mike Sabin – to the point she trekked up to Northland to stand between John Key and television cameras with her shoddy “Sabin ShonKEY” sign, which to many may have been undecipherable.

That’s the simple part.

The rest now needs specialist help –

An earlier success with Auckland water, where she was unfortunately [in hindsight] presented with a community service award, has led her to think she is New Zealand’s Erin Brockovich.
Brockovich went on to participate in other anti-pollution lawsuits.
Penny, though, mistakenly thinks the highlight of her life can become continuously self-rewarding in a career as a whistle blower, whereas in reality it can’t.

Since the water thing, name a single anti-corruption triumph to equal it.

Cameron Slater’s comments against Auckland Council are a much higher and more frequent “whistle-blowing” hit rate.

Penny’s many websites offer nothing in comparison, because everything on them is about herself, not the Council.

The rates strike is now hinges on a recently discovered clause in Rates Law which says information on how the rates are to be spent, should accompany both your rates assessment and rates invoice.
This is estimated to amount to about 40 pages of A4 material that should be issued with each document.
It won’t happen. That information may be made available in some form online, and the Law is likely to be amended to that effect, if any change is made at all.

Penny has unwisely not put aside settlement for what the Council now seeks from her.
Penny has been asked “Do you have any intention of paying rates for those seven or so years that the Council has failed to comply with appropriate information section of the Local Government Rates Act 2002?”
The answer is probably No.

Since the water thing, the only real public watchdog alert has been oblique and not what was probably the intended revelation –
just how fucking inept Auckland Council is in collecting rates in arrears.

So far, in the last few days, the Council have acted on a section.
But that was a 10 year matter, apparently without the owners litigating.
Bright is only on about 7 years, and is fooling around in court, and having indicated she is again standing for the up-coming Mayoral Election, she may claim “belligerent action” against the next Council moves.
But maybe the Council will work up to a house yet.

Footnote – Is it the height of corruption to not pay rates yourself but to stand for a public office the sole purpose of which is to spend other people’s rates?

Did you even read what I wrote? Going on what you wrote I would say not.

Firstly, I never said I (or anyone else) owned the phrase, I said it is used in connection with (think of the ode of remembrance, every memorial and soldiers grave – they ALL have that phrase), what I should have said is that the most common modern usage of that phrase is in the remembrance of deceased serving members and that is what it is associated with, which is accurate.

Secondly, I never took it upon myself to deny a fellow citizen the right to express herself, in fact I have gone to great lengths to say that she has a right to use it. But I also have the right to be offended.

How dare you presume to put words in my mouth, and tell me I said something I did not, and how dare you not respect my right to be offended at the use of something that has meaning to me when it is used in a context not widely accepted and for nothing more than some sort of political point scoring. You are the one that shames those who fought and died for us to have the right to free speech, not me. I am the one acknowledging those rights, not you.

I was visiting the BBC News website when a message popped up, addressing me by my first name, telling me that I have been living abroad for 10 years (actually it’s nearly 12) and advising me that I can still vote in the UK election.

Does anyone know if this message was actually addressed to me personally, or whether the fact that it used my name was purely co-incidental?

Assuming that the message was for me personally, I have to say that I found it somewhat creepy. It smacked rather of Big Brother.

The irony Griff is that the taxpayer is actually paying the fine imposed on Sepuloni’s Mum – it comes out of her continued benefit payments.
So she continues to take from Peter (the taxpayer) to pay back errrr………Peter (the poor taxpayer).
Personally I think she should be ineligible to receive a benefit until the fine is paid – after all she has an overpaid daughter that could help her out.

Griff, something not mentioned in the article you linked to, but is in the Stuff article is that the judge reduced the starting point of her sentence by 3 months because of mitigating circumstances, including the media publicity! Why should media publicity have any influence over a judge’s sentencing?

Great to read your comments this afternoon – strongly-held views, articulated well. Many of us agree that misappropriating (for Penny’s petty political challenges) the legendary phrase “Lest we forget” is distasteful, possibly offensive. Penny now confirms beyond doubt her intention to give offence by emphasising the words, using upper case lettering.

Please don’t worry about Andrei. He supports Penny’s random assaults – see his 10:02am comment above, in which he invites readers to “engage with her in a respectful manner”. Interesting how respectfully he engages with you, wellygirl, in the final para of his 5:43pm comment, even completely misrepresenting (not deliberately, one hopes, but don’t anticipate an apology!) the express words that you used in your first comment at 3:08pm:

Looking forward to reading more of your comments on KB when you have time and inclination.

It’s interesting that misuse of “Lest we forget” is possibly as close as us modern Western Kiwis will come to understanding how Muslims feel about insults to Muhammad, etc.

Respect for fallen soldiers is one of the few things left we have that are sacred, in that sense.

Calendar Girl, thank you for your comments, I appreciate the support from many on the blog today of my view. I do hold very strong views on this subject, and will defend them, those that serve in the military are people I have a lot of respect for, and I feel very sad that so many try to use them and their history for their own personal agenda. I have no respect for people who do that, but I do respect the fact they can, which is more than many people around the world can do.

Thanks for the advice on Andrei, though to be honest I am not too worried about him, and with one downtick on my comment I will take it that he doesn’t like being called out when he is wrong! He may find that I am not some silly girl who will be bullied by him.

I am a daily reader of the blog, but haven’t really commented much. Most of the time I either don’t feel I am informed enough, or feel strongly enough on a subject to comment, but I do enjoy reading everyone’s comments.

we never, ever have a quick decision in a jury trial in New Zealand ?

In other jurisdictions we hear of juries retiring and reaching a decision within an hour in
certain serious cases.
This never, ever happens in NZ.

I suspect that here juries here are given a set of instructions on how to proceed with the process of determination.
I would not be suprised if a simple vote,” guilty or not” was the not he first thing on the list. But I bet it is not. (Not PC)
If it were we would see some juries returning within 30 mins

If that is the case then that is wrong.

However neutra,l such guidelines are wrong.

Are juries given such guidelines/advice or not ?

Been the froreman on a jury ?

Attended the funeral of an old school mate, and rock n roller who I hadn’t maintained close contact with since our mid 20s

When I listened to the speeches I learned that he was born again in his 30s (35 years ago.)

This was a hymn sung at his service.

I googled it when I got home and found this version, (Just the first verse, chorus and last verse )
and posted it because maybe the atheists could be missing out.

I thought about it due to this hymn.

Viking 2 I am not sure what the point of your post is, but possibly it is referencing something I am not aware of on the site previously.

On the subject of being offended, and offending, my position is simple, in a country like NZ with (supposed) free speech then people have the right to say things that may offend, people also have the right to be personally offended by those things. Those who genuinely do not mean to offend will apologise sincerely, and be more careful in how they say things in the future, those that mean to offend, and know they offend, will not apologise and continue with the offensive behaviour to bait and provoke.

As for your ‘tough titty’ comment, that is uncalled for, and adds nothing. Just saying tough to those that are offended by something, especially when they explain why, is childish, and shows a lack of respect and understanding for someone’s view.

If a person truly has respect for the right of free speech, they will acknowledge and respect the right of people to be offended. How they respond to someone’s personal offense shows if they are a person who respect’s others opinions or are just a person who ‘talks the talk but doesn’t walk the walk’.

With respect to today’s conversation, it is obvious that Penny fits into the category of person who is deliberately offending to provoke and bait people, to me she comes across as a person who does not have respect for others viewpoints.

(1) Being an unqualified moron – I have to take every little victory I can. I’m at 3km on my 5km run this evening. I’m catching up to a PI brown teen walking ahead. He turns head around, sees me, and starts running. Good one mate. Oh, you want to have a little race – hahahahaha awesome !! I sit behind him at normal pace. Let’s see how long he can keep up my pace for. I’m running 4’30” kms – hahahaha. Yep – about 150 metres – game over, stops. I gave him a couple of little pats on the shoulder as I passed, just like an Islander would – you know – it seems like a nice thing but it’s really saying ‘good effort, but you suck’ smiled and left him behind. Carrying a bag of shopping too – nice.

(2) Listening to talkback – it was the sledging thing. Aussie rings in saying he’s a homo and he and his husband moved to NZ because they wanted to live somewhere that had gay marriage. Is NZ now the Australasian Las Vegas of gay weddings – hahaha ?

SINGAPORE (AP) ” A court in Singapore on Tuesday charged a teenager over a video he posted online that was critical of the nation’s late founder and Christianity.

In the eight-minute clip that was posted on YouTube, 16-year-old Amos Yee Pang Sang said that Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s first prime minister, and Jesus Christ were both “malicious,” among other disparaging comments.

The video has been taken off Yee’s YouTube channel, but copies continue to circulate on social media.

Yee was arrested Sunday, the same day the country held an elaborate state funeral for Lee, who died March 23 at age 91.

He was charged Tuesday with three offenses ” two for insulting Christianity and the late statesman, and another for allegedly transmitting online an “obscene representation,” according to court documents.

Yee, who had previously made local headlines with his controversial and opinionated videos, could face jail time of up to three years if found guilty. He was freed on bail, but has been ordered to stop posting any content online pending the outcome of his case.

I have just listened to it on the on demand function, I agree totally with what you say here. It is time our media learned they are not the be all and end all and DO NOT have the right to know everything. I cannot imagine what damage they have done to NZ’s security over the last few years. And Phil Goff needs to shut up and trust the leadership of the NZDF, they won’t take unnecessary or stupid risks, and if they don’t think NZ public don’t need to know, then they don’t need to know. Quite simple really.

Okay, rant over – gist of it is that I totally agree. And by the way, well done on your military service, I have a lot of respect for anyone who joins up, I just wished I was selected when I applied, but alas it was not to be.

Here’s your typical shit W&I listed job in the rock star economy. . .

We are looking for a full time Receptionist for a dog business based in Seaview. You will be responsible for the front of house duties including meeting and greeting customers and provide them information for any queries they may have. You must be efficient and effective, computer literate in MYOB, Word and Excel, able to think outside the square, well presented with a pleasant and positive attitude, proficient in all business protocols and must be willing to work and learn new things.

So far so good . . .

Mon – Fri 7am to 1pm and 1 day of the weekend

*career type: full-time*. According to their bullshit definition of full-time, anything 30 hours plus. Basically six days of six hours – fantastic. Pay rate ? $14.25 an hour. What level of proficiency in MS apps and accounting software do you want for $14.25 an hour ? I should do it just to get the computer crap on my CV.
