‘Islamophobia’ was a label coined by the UK’s leading independent race equality thinktank, the Runnymede Trust, in 1991 to describe the “unfounded hostility towards Muslims”. The Runnymede Trust defined Islamophobia as “closed views” that saw Islam as monolithic, unchanging, violent, inferior and a threat to the “West” .

NZ Herald have a misleading headline – Peter Dunne wants rethink if Winston Peters wins Northland – because when you read through they reveal they asked Dunne about it and he said it was he would want “want to consider” but didn’t have ” an immediate answer at this point”.

But despite this poor journalism it raises an important point about Northland. It’s potentially not just a meaningless by-election. It could potentially change the balance of power for the next two and a half years.

The chance of losing an effective majority should help motivate National campaigners and voters to ensure they win the by-election (which they’re expected to do easily).

In any case Peters is going to make it harder for Labour to compete.

Now we’re in a bit of a pickle…

Tourist gets pulled over on the West Coast, gets his keys taken off him for dangerous driving by another motorist AND gets a punch in the face as an extra bonus (male, 35-45, brown skin, well I never).

What to do? This is going to happen more and more as people feel empowered to take the law into their own hands as they get more and more frustrated with Asian drivers who actually can’t drive at all.

*555 operators are routinely telling the many, many motorists who call in to report foreigners driving dangerously to feel free to take their keys if they can. We simply don’t have the resources to police all the roads in the South Island.

This could mean a drop in tourist numbers if we’re not careful. What the hell are we going to do?

Bernard Haykell wrote the Atlantic article and feels that are more nuanced understanding of ISIS is needed to comat it not e.g a nuclear Armageddon that some like you might be suggesting .

Certainly I wouldn’t punch someone in the face but I would remove keys. No worries.

What the stats don’t reflect is the number of near misses. Ask anybody you like down there; absolutely everyone has at least one story of being nearly taken out by a tourist. They are so over it.

It doesn’t take much to see where John Armstrong’s political sympathies lie in his Herald article: ‘Where US goes, Key follows- on his own’.

The entire article is written in a style perfected by those over on the Labour Party’s Standard blog, full of contempt and dripping with cynicism: ‘…John Key has enjoyed the best of all worlds, hobnobbing with Barack Obama and David Cameron over lunch while making continuous references to running an independent foreign policy all the way to dinner time.’

Armstrong’s weasel words on behalf of the Labour Party do him no credit. I am surprised that he hasn’t echoed the sentiments of other Labour Party Standard bloggers who write that John Key can’t wait for the first body bags to be returned to New Zealand so that he can whip up greater support for the fight against ISIS and increase the number of NZ troops in Iraq.

Such is the level of bitterness of that sad man Herald journalist John Armstrong.

duggledog: Best before anyone makes comments in defence of errant foreign drivers, they have a near miss, thanks to their hopeless driving skills. Don’t give a stuff if they don’t come here, it will save millions in medical fees, and of course they are covered by ACC, which NZ taxpayers and vehicle owners finance. People have lost family members because of these visitors’ driving inabilities, total disregard of our road rules, and bogus international licences. Glad to see someone has got off their arse and done something about it, our traffic police appear to be more interested in catching someone doing 4 K’s over the limit or having a extra sip of beer. They seem to be able to stake out pubs and clubs, but not catch hopeless foreign drivers.

Stuff has continued its inevitable descent into tabloid journalism. A disturbing portion of the top headlines are either ‘click bait’ (you won’t believe what happened next…), Celebrity snapshots eg- Kardashians, popular internet meme (taken from Reddit about 5 days prior), heavily slanted opinion pieces devoid of any analysis, or a copy & paste of the police bulletins.

I am henceforth referring to it as “Fluff” – and will make a point of not frequenting it.

Do others have suggestions for more reputable news sources?

Most professional drivers will tell you they also have (almost daily) stories of near misses with non-tourists.

This is unbelievable. So if so dude shows up in a rented or borrowed luxury car and tells some woman he is a brain surgeon and it turns out he is unemployed is he a sex offender? Does the law work two ways? What if a woman dyes her hair and lies about her age – could she be charged?

To be fair, the list of recent fatal accidents involving tourist drivers is quite diverse in terms of nationality – e.g., German, Belgian, USA, Israel, China, Korea (from memory).

I have driven internationally on the other side of the road. On a real licence. I have never had my keys taken off me because I abide by the law of whatever country I’m in.

I’d take the keys off whomever I judged was out of control and a clear danger to other motorists, if no other options were apparent, in my own country – don’t turn this into something racist! It’s lazy and not really your style.

I repeat; what would you do Pete George if you were half way through Otira, no cell coverage, driver all over the road, stops by the pub.

Irrespective of race, would you take his keys? Yes or no?

Not accusing you of racism duggledog, xenophobia maybe but not racism, bad foreign drivers are of all races and colours.

None of them had any insurance by the way.

Doesn’t matter if they do.

They either try to blame you (facts don’t matter in NZ) or are too pissed/drugged up to use it. Either way you end up paying for it and hope you get something back at the end of the day.

Had one halfwit drive up my arse while I was doing 50kph in Shirley then claimed I backed into him – and got away with it.

I’m not sure that I endorse this type of scaremongering journalism. These people may have done awful crimes, but our justice system has deemed that they have paid their penalty, and they are taking a walk in a public park- not far from where I live, incidentally- supervised.

I despise any sort of sensationalist journalism and deplore the way that The Press has photographed these people in order to demonise them and raise fear in the community.

The only near misses I have had were typical Kiwi moronic drivers in their V8’s overtaking over the brow of a hill … half a second earlier and I would have been roadkill. Near Roxburgh and Omakau …..

No.

And as you know I live in aussie, and KB is the only NZ ‘news service’ I read – and some people here list things from stuff and the herald ect and it keeps me up to date with the ‘main news’.

I’m more informed than my family who actually live in NZ [they tell me so] – and that’s because most people here at KB are better at discerning the news than journos in the papers and tv are.

You are not missing out on anything, and if I was to suggest anything it would be to spend your time at American Thinker, Steynonline, Andrew Bolt ect ect – as it gives me a perspective from outside NZ about the same issues – education, low wage workers, islam ect ect. Cheers.

The fact is this: Asians are mostly not used to and do not use cars the way we do, on roads like ours, over such distances. That’s just the way it is. Aside from the fact many of their licences are simply bought off a website.

The reality is, as such they are going to feature heavily in the statistics but I put that down mostly to the huge numbers arriving and driving.

The other reality is this: your average Chinese tourist is, shall we say, a bespectacled mild mannered small-ish person who will pull over when required to do so. Simply, they will get picked on. Who’s going to take the keys off a giant Samoan? Nobody in their right mind.

I don’t want the Asians all to f*** off back home. They bring huge tourist dollars. Lose those, and chuck in a bit of fruit fly, maybe another drought next summer and NZ Inc starts to look really shaky.

Again, fellow KB’ers: what to do? Pete, answer the question?

Here’s an idea: John Key gets the Chinese Premier to say ‘Careful Or Else’. That’ll work. They do as they’re told.

Sorry, I can’t accept that as being misleading in the way you portray it. Peter Dunne signed up as a support partner of the Government, even before the final results were in. He knew it was there for three years. He was re-appointed a Minister.

In politics, loyalty is a quality that is of paramount importance to the trust that binds relationships and ongoing co-operation, but:

Asked whether he would seek greater concessions from National if it lost another seat, he said: “That’s something I’d want to consider. I don’t have an immediate answer at this point.”

Clearly Mr Dunne indicated to the reporter that he wanted to keep his options open. That he was not ruling out applying a bit of opportunist ‘leverage’ if National lost the seat.

That’s OK, nobody would suggest that he is totally beholden to National. But it’s too tough on the newspaper in these circumstances to claim that it’s headline is “misleading”. It purely reflects Mr Dunne’s expressed ambivalence.

Based on limited information a yes or no answer isn’t possible. You didn’t say if they had face tattoos or not. Car full or driver only? If it was a bunch of young locals they might listen to reason or they might react very badly.

And if you take their keys then what?

There’s a range of options, trying to take someone else’s keys just one which certainly wouldn’t be my first inclination.

What if the driver had had got a bee sting and was stopping at the pub seeking assistance? (I’ve been stung whiole riding a motorbike and was not the best of riders afterwards, but I was assisted, I didn’t have my keys taken and left alone).

It looks to me like it was put to Dunne and he made a vague off the cuff comment but hadn’t thought about it. So it was misleading for NZH to portray it as ‘wants rethink’. Their making up stories needs a rethink.

The Christchurch city council has got it wrong. With the forced closer of a Dos house.
Every city needs a Dos house. If we like it or not there are people on the fringe.
A private operator with some dilapidated caravans and portaloos is providing such service.
At no cost to the rate payer. Does this type of accommodation fit in with the town plain.
no . Then the city is munted and there is a thousand and one jobs the council needs to do
before getting all haughty over having a Dos house in some industrial wasteland.

This is Peter Dunne, at his finest, trying to have a bob each way.
I really hope that JK wheels him in for a little chat very shortly in which he reminds the whore of Ohariu that he does like to rearrange the chairs around the cabinet table from time to time…… And how might be happy to work with a reduced majority rather than have to put up with someone who adds little or no value to the governance of this country, and who cannot be trusted.
Particularly when that individual is standing in the way of the all important RMA reform and, now, the sending of our troops to the middle east.

Mr. Dunne, Cromwell’s speech to the rump parliament could have been especially written for you. I’m sure you know what I mean.

duggledog – no your scenario is potentially not simple. I would consider taking someone’s keys but would also consider a whole bunch of other things too.

Mindlessly jumping to a conclusion and taking someone’s keys is going to end badly for someone the way things are going.

Muslims? Pukekohe market gardeners? Most of the non-Caucasians you’ll be referring to have been there for generations, and are Indians – most likely Sikhs if they are religious at all.

I’m told by people who know the local situation well that the Indian community of Pukekohe is proudly successful and highly respected, a positive business and social presence in the area. (I don’t think that was what you were implying in your comment; so it might be helpful for you to research some facts before you try to belittle them.)

Nor mine – but if it seemed a safe and immediately necessary way for me to prevent what seemed to be a serious accident in the making, I’d like to think I’d consider it as an option.

I’d work out that it wasn’t really necessary to take their keys and ask if them if they had any allergies. That would be the sensible thing to do, wouldn’t it?

Something is very wrong with our justice system when the penalty for the rape
a 23 month old baby and a 6 year old (among other crimes) is 10 years jail.

So Lloyd McIntosh is supervised for his walks around the park, big deal.
The fact that he is not still in jail today is a disgrace.

In the UK the Lost Prophets singer was handed a 40 year sentence for raping one
baby and attempting to rape another one.

10 years is almost a sick joke of a sentence.

Especially if they are from Chch. This is just in the last week alone. I have seen two cars speeding through roundabout’s without slowing down, and three race through red lights.

I see this kind of thing every week at least twice.

And it’s always been this way here. On the other hand, I found Auckland to have vastly more civilized and sensible drivers.

I’ve got some further thoughts on this Communism and Islam thing. The Runnymede Trust idiots framed this as ‘people looking for an enemy to hate….. but actually the truth of the matter is totally different. The fact is that, with its totalitarian system, it’s antipathy to freedom and its military aims and capabilities, Communism WAS a real threat. The free world dealt with that threat, but now there is a new threat which is Islam. Islam is as much, if not more, of a threat to freedom as Communism was.

Freedom has to be fought for, and treating real threats as imaginary isn’t very helpful, frankly.

207 Boko Haram fighters killed in Nigeria.

The first proposed referendum is to establish an alternative to the present flag – to select one that is then run off against the present flag in the second referendum.

But in the first referendum, of perhaps six designs for voters to rate 1– 6, why not include the present flag to be rated at the same time, so rate them all 1 – 7 ? And forget the second referendum.

Two bites may appeal – step 1 and then step 2 – but apart from seeming sense, is it really? Is ranking 4 to 6 designs in order of preference OK, but 7 impossible?
Is there any psychological or any other ‘logical reason why two referenda are needed, apart from doubling the cost and prolonging the procedure?

What’s quite valuable about this particular article is that it names names. It names people who you’ve heard of from that era who were prominent in politics and govt and business and it explains who those people really were and what they really did. And while today in Ukraine we have a different generation of people, they are still playing these same roles that those people back then played.

For those of you who haven’t heard of the author, Eustace Mullins was Bill Clinton’s mentor back in Clinton’s college days. Which doesn’t mean a lot perhaps, although it probably does indicate whatever Mullins was, he’s not a lightweight.

I followed rather ordinary Corolla for some ten kms on Hyway 75 recently and observed it repeatedly crossing the white line, continuous whiteline, and twice a yellow on it’s side of the center line, twice correcting in the face of oncoming traffic.
The car was clearly marked on the back window with the logo of a budget rental company.
The car pulled up outside the Akaroa 4 square, angle parked across the clear paralel parking continuous whiteline and a very untidy asian man, estimated age early to mid 20s emerged.
After some thinking I decided to be thankful no one had become another statistic in the growing number and went on my way.

You really needed to know the context.

A number of weeks ago I was being lambasted by Stephieboy and mikenmild for even suggesting that maybe Muslim immigration might not be such a great idea based on the experiences of other countries. As part of that “discussion” I asked them both what benefits more Muslim immigration would bring to New Zealand. While they may have been trying to take the piss, all they could come up with was – more kebab shops and more Pukekohe market gardeners.

Personally I have no idea how many muslims are working as market gardeners or not – but it still sounded a weak reason for giving away our culture and hastening the introduction of Sharia Law.

Maybe I just need listen to Melting Pot for another 1000 times before I “get” it.

I read many years ago that it was CAIR who first coined the word Islamophobia in order that they could have victim status whenever someone criticised their ideology. CAIR is the Council for American Islamic Relations and was an unindicted conspirator in the legal case brought against The Holy Land charities that were funnelling millions to Gaza etc. CAIR us a very powerful group who have many members working for the US Govt. and who receive regular invites to the White House for Iftar and other functions. They have been connected to Obama even before he was in office.

Sad news that eIght people are dead and one person has been injured after a series of shootings in south-central Missouri.

The BBC reported that this is a Bible Belt area and the suspected shooter is dead and a member of a Bible Belt church.

Now ISIS is terrible but it does not help when every time a person who happens to be a Muslim goes on a rampage there is so e a to Muslim hysteria from some people but when the human happens to be a Christian no-one asks Christian leaders to apologise.

Of course Christian leaders condemn this and should not have to apologise but the different approach may not be helpful.

Problem is Lance that neither police nor NZTA are capable of critical statistical analysis so we will be soon berated by both with more mindless TV adds that simply prop up our equally hopeless TV stations, more stupid fucking rules and policemen in white coats with clipboards to hug and write upon.

In the case of the Tga to Waihi rd, I have lived here for over 40 years about half that time out that way. It was a shit rd when I came here and just yesterday reminded my daughter that her baby sitter and her father were killed in almost the same place as that young man but about 35 years ago.
The traffic on that road has absolutely escalated, as was always envisaged and its a dangerous unforgiving stretch of road. Back in the late 70’s Transit bought miles of properties to make a new road but depite the huge increase in funds that come from the use of that road nothing other than mildly cosmetic changes have been made.
That road carries all the timber coming of the Coromandel and a huge number of trucks carrying containers and all manner of things.
The areas alongside the road have side roads being filled up with new houses on lifestyle blocks. Work mostly is in TGA so the traffic in the morning is about as good a traffic que as you will find anywhere these days.

Is there any moves to make a new road. Well probably after Len gets his train set. By then lots more will have died.
NZTA in their wisdom have denied the issue and are treating the road like a suburban street. No passing lanes, no wide shoulders to the road, road surface that is just getting pounded to bits.
But unfortunately as we have learnt from long experience in this area because it a safe National seat nothing will be done.

One can go to Napier and drive on nice highways with no traffic. How does that work?

This region is and has been the fastest growing region for ever.
Our port is growing, timber is growing and yet we struggle to get our roads made safe.
What irks me is that if I ran an unsafe workplace MoBIE would be in there like snarly dogs but the roads (which are workplaces for many), are sacrosanct from their scrutiny.

It will be interesting if Peters get elected up North. Peters was responsible for actually getting roading underway here in the bay. Sure he had to do a deal with Clark but without it our port and our town would be well screwed by now. One can see him doing the same for Northland and If he uses roads as a plank to screw the Nats. then good on him.
I should also point out that Tga was the only place in NZ that built toll roads to improve its roading. Did that because the Nats. just wouldn’t get the govt to fund stuff. The Nats were also very unhelpful with the legislation enabling this to be done.

Nothing changes.
Perhaps Todd can get stuff done. I hope so as the other fellow is bloody useless.

I could go on, but suffice to say, unlike Captain Bananas, I view a person’s work in totality, and if I’m viewing a particular action or output of theirs, I look at it as a discrete work and try to understand it as such. Unlike Captain Bananas, I don’t hallucinate that just because a person did this or that in their lifetime, that this therefore absolutely 100% no questions asked entails I must therefore ipso facto totally and completely ignore every single other thing they ever did because they once did “x” and that therefore, in my mind, makes every single other thing they ever did completely and utterly irrelevant.

No, I don’t do that.

Captain Bananas however does it all the time. It’s how he thinks, and I think it’s mental.

I think he does it because he’s a yank. a lot of yanks have this enormously condescending patriarchal attitude where everything in their world is completely black or white and there is no gray, it’s either one or the other.

It’s totally fucked but many of them do it. I’ve never seen it in a US female, but I’ve seen it in many, not all but many, US males. Especially ones in positions of authority, military or police, etc.

So fuck off with that round here Captain Bananas, we’re not your children, thank God. We’re not your slaves and we won’t be treated like that by a jumped up little fuck like you.

On the subject of tourist drivers and crashes. I think the media have over-hyped this, and definitely have some culpability in the assault on the driver yesterday. I did note a headline the other day from the Press which said (paraphrased) that one in 12 tourists are at fault in crashes in the South Island, this is less than 9%, so that means that NZ drivers are at fault in over 91% of crashes in the South Island, so where is the outrage at them?

I think the issue is as much about the state of our roads as it is about the drivers, there are also some cultural issues.

For example I saw a lot of negative (almost xenophobic) comments in social media and online about the Chinese driver who didn’t stop for the police car a week or so back, most calling him stupid. However, in China the police always have their lights on, it means nothing here, so therefore it is understandable he didn’t know to stop if he hadn’t been told, or understood. I am not excusing his driving, just explaining the cultural difference.

Also, many of these drivers are not used to two lane roads with gravel on the side, or even in some cases gravel roads full stop, many roads in other countries are more than one lane each way.

Part of the solution to this is definitely to improve our roads, part of the solution would also be for foreign drivers to get more information from Rental Car companies regarding NZ laws, especially around pulling over for emergency vehicles and not crossing the centre lane (that is done a lot here in Beijing!).

I don’t agree with those people who think they can take the law into their own hands and forcibly take keys off drivers, any other circumstance it would be called an attempted car jacking, so they should be charged accordingly.

Has any analysis been done on the proportion of tourist-kilometres over whatever period that applied to?

In some parts of the South Island in particular there’s a lot of tourists travelling a lot. If they were travelling say 3% of the kilometres then 9% is high. If they travel 6% then 9% doesn’t seem extraordinarliy high for people who are in unfamiliar country and are easily distracted by scenery.
