Oh hold on – the article states that Shebab carried out “a bloody attack and takeover of a mall in Nairobi in September 2013 that killed at least 67 people” – so maybe no peaceful intentions.

Len Brown thinks big (and no, before you ask, it’s not another penis joke):

On Saturday, the Herald revealed that Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (Ateed) had created a contract in London for one of its senior executives, Grant Jenkins, at a cost to ratepayers of more than $230,000.

Yesterday, Mr Brown defended Mr Jenkins’ posting and other overseas postings.

He said Ateed had a brief to promote economic development in New Zealand and overseas.

“I totally back Brett [O’Riley] in his decision here. All they are doing is carrying our what we have told them to do and that is to encourage overseas investment in our city.

“This is a pilot project and it will conclude in September. The key thing I want to see is an outcome here,” Mr Brown said.

He did not accept the council was straying into the Government’s role of attracting investment and skilled workers to New Zealand, or moving away from core council business.

Asked if he was out of step with other local politicians and Aucklanders on the issue of overseas postings, Mr Brown said: “We have an Auckland Plan and an Auckland economic development strategy that clearly supports this type of activity.”

Shut down the Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development experiment now!

Who’s going to what should be a SIZZLING debate on the Wellington proposed ‘Supercity’ tonight at Sacred Heart College, Lower Hutt, 7.30pm?

I’m looking forward to Greater Wellington Regional Chair Fran Wilde being ‘barbecued’ by Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy and Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace.

(Meant of course in a caring way 🙂

Personally, I’ve been very impressed at the leadership role that has been played by both these Mayors, in standing up and ‘leading from the front’ in defence of their citizens and communities, against this attempted corporate takeover of the Wellington region.

Good on them!

(And I’m not easily impressed .. )

9 people killed in accidents involving tourists already this years. 2 of them were Kiwis.

It does seem there are a lot of inept overseas drivers doing stupid things on our roads. The latest, killing a 5 year old NZ girl was on a straight road with a double yellow line. The ute the Chinese driver was in hit the Kiwi family head on on the wrong side of road. The 4 members of the girls family are in Dunedin hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Isn’t it amazing. Three UK Muslim girls decide to become jihadi brides and the pinko media in the UK decide it is worthy of saturation coverage.
The papers, and TV are showing endless interviews with these girls families begging these girls to come home because it is not safe. Not one of these family members taken the opportunity to condemn what is happening. or condemn Isis.

Frankly, the fact that these three girls have gone is worthy of saturation media coverage, however that coverage should in no way be sympathetic. The families of these girls should be ruthlessly questioned as to why they went, the media should not accept weak excuses about the family having no idea. The families should not be allowed to paint these girls as innocent when they clearly are not.

These girls should now be treated as enemies of the west. If located they should be detained and returned to the UK to face imprisonment. It is also time that the UK media (and all western media) took off the gloves when it comes to dealing with the poison that is Islam.

We are at war with the Muslim world, it is time that we stopped pretending we are not.

I find it interesting that young men continue to commit suicide in such startlingly large numbers in New Zealand- and that a proportion of them are probably young gay men. It seems strange that anyone would commit suicide because of any stigma about being gay in these liberal days when it is almost a badge of honour to be a member of the LGBT brigade.

Perhaps therein lies the problem. Relentlessly the public is presented in such events as the Pride Parade where the overwhelming image of gay men is as drag queens, limp-wristed John Inman types or lisping muscle men in gold lame g- strings. The publicity around the ANZ’s garishly painted GAYTM machines also reinforces this image- just look at the MSM publicity the ANZ garnered the with the ubiquitous big-haired drag queens.

I find it unsurprising that young gay adolescents might not find the prospect of leading a life as part of this freakshow in any way appealing. I certainly wouldn’t. The fact is, of course, that most Kiwi gay men are perfectly ordinary blokes who just want to get on with their lives and not draw attention to their being much different from anyone else. The certainly don’t identify with the image that Pride or GAYTM portray.

I’ve also been impressed by the leadership of Lower and Upper Hutt.

But the impression I have is one of abject economic failure in both cases.

Lowers Hutt’s cumulative GDP growth in the past 10 years has been zero.

Upper Hutt’s has been negative.

On the other hand, the region’s GDP has grown by around 20%.

The Hutt valley is an economic basket case, and the leadership have no idea what to do about it.

Interesting that Advertising Standards Authority has pulled up the Greater Wellington Regional Council concerning misleading claims in support of amalgamation. The offending piece concerned an alleged problem with water pipes in Lower Hutt.

Now interestingly a leaflet (dated December 2014) from the Local Government Commission was in my mailbox last week and indicated that 50% of water pipes and 40% of wastewater pipes across the region need replacing at an estimated cost of $1.7B to $2.6B. This got me wondering –
1. Are these pipes immediately due for replacement? More probably due for replacement over a 50 year period.
2. Are there problems indicating a serious backlog of replacements and maintenance? There does not seem to be. In particular with water pipes leak problems have been tackled with vigour in recent years particularly as that would defer costly headworks.
3. The existing Wellington area councils are sufficiently large that there are unlikely to be any significant economies of scale in merging waterworks management.
4. A new ‘super council’ is unlikely to be able to suddenly find a pot of gold to undertake this work.

So why is the Local Government Commission and the Greater Wellington Regional Council treating its residents like a pack of morons?

John Key has basically said today that David Bain is not getting compensation. He says David Bain must prove his father did it to receive compensation.

Given 2 trials and a privy court investigation cannot find the truth it is obvious the evidence is inconclusive and only 1 living person knows the truth.

For those reasons, it is impossible to prove Robin Bain did it.

Personally I don’t think the first trial was fair and on that basis he should get something in the absence of any other information.

Wtf would I know ? Nothing. I’ve got no idea which one is better. I didn’t even know Celia was a green when I voted for her when she got in first time. That’s how dumb people are. Yes – I need help from commentators to know the good the bad the whys and wherefores or I’m totally lost. If there was a textbook called ‘Wellington Region: United or Untied ?’ I could look at it and actually know something. It doesn’t help that the politicians are boring – the whole thing isn’t terribly exciting.

This 8 year old was not a “suicide bomber”. She would have been used, a pawn. Would an 8 year old understand the repercussions of what was about to happen to her?
Shame on her parents if they were complicit in using their small daughter. Put them in the dock on murder charges along with the bomb makers.

I agree waikatogirl. Her actions were those of one, but I seriously doubt she really knew what she was doing. The poor thing was clearly manipulated, at the very least. She is a victim as much as the others that were killed.

A bomb has killed two and injured many during a peaceful march in Kharkiv commemorating the day of the worst violence on the Maidan last year where 100 people were killed by snipers. Fortunately, the march was delayed by 10 min or so, therefore the number of people could have been killed or injured was greatly reduced. As usual, the trail leads back to Russia.

Four terrorists that attacked a peaceful rally in Kharkiv today were trained in Russia and using Russian weapons, the Security Service of Ukraine said today. They had planned a series of further attacks following the bombing, which killed at least two and wounded 11, but were arrested before they could carry them out.

“[The terrorists] were captured while attempting to attack with a flamethrower a club where soldiers and volunteers gather, as well as a shopping centre,” Markiyan Lubkivskiy, a senior adviser in the Security Service of Ukraine, known as the SBU, posted on Facebook.

“They had planned other sabotage and terrorist activities. Discovered was a Russian-produced ‘Shmil’ [flamethrower]. According to the testimony of detainees, the group was trained in Belgorod (Russian Federation).”

Today’s Dominion Post includes a story on the gains made in medical research towards defeating cancer. One of the potential treatments is to use “tiny particles of gold” … “to latch onto tumours to show their exact size and location in advance of surgery.” That’s on page B1, the article Blood test and pill could detect the presence of cancer cells.

Now, in your ideal world, gold would be revalued to $58,000 per ounce from my memory of what you’ve said previously. Therefore this sort of potential use of gold might be kiboshed from the start, since who is going to be experimenting with a substance that is that valuable?

Never mind all those young couples who will not be able to afford gold engagement and wedding rings.

your prejudices do not allow you to see what is going in the Ukraine do they? I am not a fan of Putin nor a hater of him. I think he is a decent leader but has some bad elements. Pointing out that the EU has helped escalate this conflict does not made me a paid up agent working for the Kremlin.

Of course Ukraine is still corrupt and many don’t want to fight in the war. The corruption is imbeded and will take time to sort out – kinda difficult to do that and fight a war against a much bigger neighbour at the same time!!

the biggest beneficiary of war in the ME is Russia. Since the fall of oil prices, combined with massive capital flight, Russia’s economy has crashed.

Putin’s moronic one note economy is entirely dependent on high oil prices. The best way to raise them is create turmoil in the ME.

Combine that with the evidence of significant Al-Qaida and ISIS leaders having connections with Russia’s KGB/FSB and it becomes obvious what kind of game Putin is playing.

But Obama and officials throughout his administration deny any connection between Islam and the terrorists beheading and burning their victims in a reign of terror in the Middle East.

Muslim reformers say the administration is ignoring them because they disagree with Obama’s refusal to acknowledge the Islamic roots of the extremists’ ideology.

Some of the most prominent reformers have argued for years that the ideological and theological roots of Islamist extremism must be addressed, but administration officials carefully avoided exactly that subject during Obama’s three-day summit.

The White House is also undermining its own efforts by working with people who sympathize with the goals of violent extremist groups, if not their methods, the reformers say.

“We have to own the issue of extremist Islamic theology in order to defeat it and remove it from our world. We have to name it to tame it,” Muslim journalists Asra Nomani and Hala Arafa wrote in an essay published Friday by the Daily Beast.

So as we can presume not all oil Shieks are stupid, then would not this ISIS disruption be against their investment interests if they saw the West de-stabilised? The financial golden rule always applies, you can’t put your money under a mattress (or camel blanket); it must work for you. The oil states need solid investments to cushion them from the eventuality of their wells running dry. They may of course use this huge monetary influence to allow the spread of Islam, but what use is a Muslim controlled Western country that produces little of what it used to?
