It won’t be Stuff’s most popular page but kudos to their Parliamentary blog Beehive Live. It provides a good insight into what is happening at Parliament. It started late last year but has been refined, now only running on sitting days.

Yesterday – Beehive Live: TPP on the agenda

It’s the last sitting day – and last question time – of the week.

There are a couple more select committees on this morning, with oral submissions on the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement at the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade select committee.

Tune in here for live updates, newsbites and occasional weirdness, which can only be found in the halls of Parliament.

It provides an informall journal of key happenings in select committees and in the House on sitting days (I hope they run it on other days of particular political interest).

A number of Fairfax journalists contribute but the yoounger ones are more engaged, particularly Stacey Kirk and Aimee Gulliver.

They’re providing something interesting and worthwhile for political junkies and those who might be curious about Parliamentary process.

The Herald’s story about wealthy American Marc Holtzman’s interest in establishing a science and technology charter school based upon the Denver School of Science and Technology is really going to set the cat among the pigeons with the left. It has all the hallmarks of CONSPIRACY THEORY:

Wealthy American…connection to Ronald Reagan…luxury Queenstown property on the market at $4.75 million…involvement of ACT’s David Seymour and Catherine Isaac…a meeting with John Key at a Davos breakfast roundtable…

I will watch with interest to see how this is spun for all its worth over on TS and how the central issue of improving science and technology education for children of low income families is totally ignored!

Was wondering if there is a more money hungry greedy bank than ANZ in NZ. My dad was captured by that mentioned bank when he was a customer of National Bank NZ. He enjoyed the benefits ,providing his Super Payments were lodged in his National Bank account, known as Freedom . Unfortunately the captive customers of the National Bank, was taken over by the greedy money hungry Australian owned ANZ. Freedom accounts were kept.by greedy money hungry ANZ, they introduced a bank charge for the privilege. Seems gouging superannuations, of their meagre super payments by way of bank fees,will help increase the Australian owned ANZs obscene profits.

Dubai Hosking once again skirted around offending Islam by not asking the museum curator the obvious question – ‘would the museum ban a t-shirt with an image of Mohamed on it’? He just kept comparing the Te Papa condom issue, and saying this is just another of the same, but did read out an email (not his opinion) from a listener asking about Mohamed cartoons on a shirt. The true test will be when a visitor wears a Mohamed t-shirt in the museum – good for the goose and all that.

oldpark: A relative in a similar situation who was a former National customer does not pay fees, so long as the super is paid into that particular Freedom account. Former National customers were promised that NOTHING would change, and they would still keep their privileges. Tell him to fight the bastards, preferably in front of a queue of customers.

Will be making a submission in person before the Law and Order Select Committee on the long-overdue ‘Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Legislation Bill’ on Wednesday 18 February 2015.

This is the Bill that former Minister of Justice, Judith Collins, had promised to introduce in 2013, (but didn’t); the passage of which is seen as essential in order for New Zealand, purportedly the SECOND ‘least corrupt country in the world’ to be able to ratify the UN Convention Against Corruption.

Interesting that within 7 days of fellow anti-corruption ‘whistle-blower’ Grace Haden and myself, ‘blowing the whistle’ at the G20 Anti-Corruption Conference in Brisbane, about New Zealand’s failure to ratify the UN Convention Against Corruption, that this Bill was FINALLY tabled in the House?

The van rental Companies are prepared to chase their clients for traffic fines (by debiting credit cards) but not ‘freedom camping’ fines because this would draw unwelcome attention to the fact that the majority of rentals are not freedom camping compliant.

The net outflow of New Zealand citizens fluctuates (with the New
Zealand and foreign business cycle) but has been negative for several decades. The
average annual outflow – around 0.6 per cent of the population over the last decade – is large
by international standards. But it is now typically more than offset by the increasing number
of net arrivals of non NZ citizens: from around 10000 in the period prior to the reforms, to
something closer to 40000 per annum now. The difference makes a material
macroeconomic difference; on average, for example, equivalent to around half New
Zealand’s house-building in a normal year. As a share of population, the average net intake
of non-New Zealanders is one of the largest anywhere; directly as a matter of policy choice.
The net inflow of non New Zealand citizens has accounted for around 80 per cent of average
population growth over the last two decades.

The split of the data here between New Zealand and other citizens is simply to help illustrate
the nature of the policy “shock”. Nothing in this paper relies on, or implies, any differences
in the fundamental characteristics of New Zealand citizens and immigrants to New Zealand
from other countries62. The only critical difference is that New Zealand citizens can come
and go as they wish – their choices are totally endogenous to, e.g., relative economic
conditions. By contrast, Australians aside (who make up a very small proportion of
migrants), non-citizens can migrate to New Zealand only on other policy provisions set, and
altered from time to time, by the New Zealand government. Thus, although gross and net
flows of non-New Zealand citizens can and do fluctuate, the substantial increase in the
average net inflow since the late 1980s is a direct result of domestic policy choices.

trout – The issue is that ‘freedom camping’ fines can only be levied against the persons involved and not the vehicle owner. As things stand, it would be illegal for vehicle rental companies to recover such fines via customers’ credit cards. While the rental companies could provide for this in their rental contracts, they would not want to become the meat in the sandwich with this. The law could be changed to put ‘freedom camping’ fines on a similar footing to traffic fines in which case they can be recovered.

If the law on this were changed, then it would be useful to include littering (stuff thrown out of a vehicle) as an offence for which a vehicle owner is responsible for.

Have checked with the bank, the charges stand. If the super receiver has more than $2500 in bank account ,fees then will not be charged. Seems it is okay to gouge a super receiver, if they are unfortunate to not have the magic figure in their account . Gouging by ANZ ON SUPER RECEIVERS, has become a speciality. They are discriminating against poorer Super receivers. Shame ANZ . Thank you for your concern Dennis go well .

Biggest house prefabricator in hands of receivers

Nearly half the staff laid off at Kumeu company eHome NZ.

New Zealand’s largest off-site residential manufacturer, working in Auckland’s Special Housing Areas, is in receivership and almost half the staff have been let go.

eHome NZ, with a large factory in Kumeu’s Access Rd and capable of putting up a house in only eight hours, is now in the hands of McDonald Vague receivers Tony Maginness and Peri Finnigan.

On Monday, the receivers laid off 42 staff, leaving about 58 people working for the builder, whose factory was opened by Prime Minister John Key in 2013.

eHome, capable of building 250 houses annually, has been on many south and west Auckland sites, specialising in fast-track community and social housing schemes where it has made a big name for itself.

‘Trade minister Tim Groser has repeatedly claimed that negotiations for agreements like the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) are never conducted in daylight. That is simply not true.’

‘There are many such instances, including the Anti-counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) that involved six of the TPPA parties,[1] where draft negotiating texts and other documents have been released. He has ignored the inconvenient truth and continued to assert his position as fact’, says University of Auckland Professor Jane Kelsey.

‘The European Commission (EC) has now conclusively just put the lie to such claims’.

Professor Kelsey has just published two papers analysing recent developments in the negotiations between the European Union and the US called the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) which parallel those for the TPPA.

One contrasts the obsessive secrecy that continues to envelope the TPPA with the inquiry by the EU Ombudsman into transparency and public access to TTIP documents[2] and the EC’s subsequent decision to release a raft of its own negotiating documents with.[3] The second outlines the Ombudsman’s reports and the EC’s responses. [4]

The European Ombudsman was forthright. Old approaches of confidentiality and limited public participation are ‘ill-equipped to generate legitimacy’ for such ambitious agreements. ‘Given the potential impact of TTIP on the lives of citizens, key documents have to be published’.

Why the secret criminal investigation of WikiLeaks is troubling for journalists

The media is overlooking the details of an investigation that could have implications for all news organizations

Prosecutors in the Eastern District of Virginia began investigating WikiLeaks in 2010 after the site posted some of the quarter-million State Department cables leaked by Chelsea Manning.

Last month, an official from the Department of Justice publicly confirmed the investigation is still ongoing. It was the first time anyone, including WikiLeaks’ own defense team, has gotten such confirmation since April 2014.

It’s an important sign that what may be the biggest criminal investigation into a publisher in US history continues to grow. Yet the news was buried 18 paragraphs deep in a Washington Post article that instead focused on Google’s multi-year fight to be allowed to inform WikiLeaks staffers that the government had requested their data.

Free-press advocates and a few independent journalists fear that kind of coverage is a sign the media is overlooking the details of an investigation that could have implications for all news organizations.

“The WikiLeaks investigation has really been unprecedented in its scope and its scale, and also its secrecy,” Carey Shenkman, a constitutional lawyer and an associate to WikiLeaks counsel Michael Ratner, said in a phone interview. “Creating ambiguity around the investigation has a chilling effect. Remarkably I am in accord with Penny on the freedom camper issue. It has always been part of the Kiwi rite of passage to go for some OE whilst still in one’s 20s and those of us who have done this have frequently ‘done’ the UK and Europe on the smell of an oily rag. Why should that not be reciprocal in terms of young tourists coming to NZ?

It is foolish to equate the value of tourists only on a dollar basis. Look at the story of Mark Holtzman in today’s Herald who came here first as a backpacker with his wife when in his 20s. Now that he is a successful entrepreneur he is investing money in NZ and looking to invest more through his desire to establish a charter school.

Don’t be so short-sighted. The dividends may not be great in the short term but who knows in the long term?

I am not a customer of ANZ but because you two seem to be at cross purposes I phoned that 0800 number. Actually read your first comment to them, oldpark, hope you don’t mind, but too bad if you do.
It seems the problem is that when those accounts were taken over a pensioner receiving superannuation payments was supposed to contact the bank. Apparently a letter was sent out asking them to do that. If they have not contacted the bank then a $5 monthly fee is charged.
So my advise to you, oldpark, is to get your father to contact the bank.

project”. It was part and parcel of a highly selective colonisation scheme to

The ANZ BANK changed the rules ,with the clap trap about a letter. This week in Missouri, where the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man by a white police officer stirred months of racial tension last year in the town of Ferguson, 15 people sued that city and another suburb, Jennings, alleging that the cities created an unconstitutional modern-day debtors’ prison, putting impoverished people behind bars in overcrowded, unlawful and unsanitary conditions.

While most reform efforts, including early releases and the elimination of some minimum mandatory sentences, have been focused on state and federal prisons, the report found that the disparate rules that apply to jails is also in need of reform.

“It’s an important moment to take a look at our use of jails,” said Nancy Fishman, the project director of the Vera Institute’s Center on Sentencing and Corrections and an author of the report. “It’s a huge burden on taxpayers, on our communities, and we need to decide if this is how we want to spend our resources.”

The number of people housed in jails on any given day in the country has increased from 224,000 in 1983 to 731,000 in 2013 — nearly equal to the population of Charlotte, N.C. — even as violent crime nationally has fallen by nearly 50 percent and property crime has dropped by more than 40 percent from its peak.

Inmates have subsequently been spending more time in jail awaiting trial, in part because of the growing reluctance of judges to free suspects on their own recognizance pending trial dates, which had once been common for minor offenses.

As a result, many of those accused of misdemeanors — who are often poor — are unable to pay bail as low as $500.

Harvard Research Links Fluoridated Water to ADHD, Mental Disorders

New research published in The Lancet by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) found that various chemicals that many children are exposed to are having a direct effect on the creation of disorders labelled under the name ADHD as well as other mental disorders. One of the chemicals said to be having an effect is fluoride, or variations of fluoride. Governments have been performing artificial fluoridation for a number of years regardless of the lack of effectiveness it has in preventing tooth decay.

The research began in a study published in 2006 which initially looked at the effects of various industrial chemicals on neuro-development.[1] The research continued with an analysis of more industrial chemicals including fluoride. 27 additional studies, including one that linked fluoride to the lowering of IQ in children, clearly illustrated the fact that fluoride is detrimental to brain development and can lead to autism spectrum disorders and other mental issues. The issue is being coined “a silent epidemic” and most health authorities continue to turn a blind eye to the issue.

The two main researchers involved in the study, Philippe Grandjean from HSPH and Philip Landrigan, both agree that the reason for the increase in incidences of chemical-related neuro-developmental disorders is due to the increasing number of untested chemicals that are being approved without proper testing. The public is also not fully being told of the dangers which is causing many to perform independent research to find out the true effects.

Research has found that fluoride affects normal endocrine function, causes kidney disease, bone weakness, dental fluorosis, cancer, lowering of IQ, calcification of the pineal gland, arthritis, immune deficiencies, skeletal fluorosis and much more. “The problem is international in scope, and the solution must therefore also be international,” stated Grandjean in a press release, calling for improved regulatory standards for common chemicals. “We have the methods in place to test industrial chemicals for harmful effects on children’s brain development — now is the time to make that testing mandatory.”

By the way, the big four Oz banks – Westpac, ANZ, NAB (BNZ in NZ) and CBA (ASB in NZ) withstood the recent crisis very well and for all the nasty things said about them – this robustness was of great advantage to NZ. Many other banks round the world would fail before any of the Oz ones in a future financial crisis, and regulators both in NZ and Oz are further increasing requirements to ensure they remain robust.

Besides their research was based on populations in China and Mongolia with higher than normal concentrations of fluoride naturally present in the water supply .The concentrations added here and elsewhere are dimutative by comparison .

There is absolutely no evidence that those with fluoridated water in NZ have lower I Qs netc than those without.

Does this idiot get a performance bonus every time he posts a lie?

From his article:

“While the studies the Harvard team reviewed did indicate that very high levels of fluoride could be linked to lower IQs among schoolchildren, the data is not particularly applicable here because it came from foreign sources where fluoride levels are multiple times higher than they are in American tap water.”

This is a fallacy because fluoride poisoning is cumulative, so it simply means that it takes longer for the effects to occur in areas with lower fluoridation levels.
