Parliamentary prayer not to change
The Herald reports:
Parliament’s Speaker David Carter today announced that the traditional prayer he uses to open daily sittings of Parliament will remain as is, with its Christian references.
He undertook a very low-key consultation process with MPs and offered an alternative that would remove religious references to “Almighty God” and “Jesus Christ our Lord” from the English version.
The National caucus said they did not want change, so at that point it was not going to happen.
I think the current prayer is inappropriate. If we have a prayer, it should be a multi-faith prayer. However the suggested replacement was less than ideal also. So inertia wins.
