Since I’m the one who kicked off the discussion about ~~sexism~~, ~~mysogny~~, ~~feminism~~, Modern Two Minute Hatefests, I figure I should try and continue it without getting side-tracked into the peculiar obsessions of some commentators.

First up is the fact that if the Atlantic journalist wants to criticise a guy’s shirt then she has every right to do so. I happen to think she’s full of shit on this issue, but more on that in a moment.

The real problem here is not her criticism but the hatefest that exploded it from it and the reaction of the target. As I looked at that ESA scientist I remembered all the nerds who studied science. Bland, boring clothing, no face jewellery, no tats, and quiet: very, very quiet in almost all circumstances. No risqué jokes or insults. About the only difference from the classic movie nerd of the 1950 and 60’s was that ties, white shirts and pocket protectors had gone. I looked at the tats and the shirt and rolled my eyes.

But with a number of these scientists there was a change, sometimes gradual, sometimes sudden, as they rose through the ranks to the exalted levels of PhD. The clothes improved, even became slightly wild, jewellery appeared on various parts of the body – and tats. I looked at that guy in the interview and saw someone who’d emerged from the toilet bowl dunkings and wedgies of high-school to being OUT and PROUD and LOUD, etc, etc. I’ll bet he now thought of himself as an individual who stands on his own two feet and says what he thinks and stands by what he does.

Yet when he was confronted on just one small aspect of the life he had chosen he crumpled like a cheap suit. His head is back in the toilet bowl, his underwear is up around his shoulders and his lunch money is gone. Rose Eveleth has it. What a dreadful prospect for a middle-aged man, cowering in tears while covered with sheets of self-mortification.

In addition I’d be willing to bet that he holds all the correct opinions on abortion, gay marriage, social welfare, guns, wars, etc, etc. But none of that saved him in the end from being turned into Emanual Goldstein.

Then there’s the other side of the coin, the other woman as it were, Rose Eveleth and company. Here’s a link to an article by Ann Althouse, law professor at University of Wisconsin law school, 60’s survivor, Obama voter in 2008 but someone who has often sunk the knife deep into leftist and feminist circles. She defends Eveleth:

Some women noticed? Everyone noticed! It was an extremely showy shirt, and Taylor chose it for some reason. We were supposed to pretend we didn’t see it? It’s not as though the “some women” made something out of nothing. To blame the women for making this a topic is to impose a burden on us all to shut up about something obvious. If Taylor had wanted to keep everything focused on the achievements of the team he was on, he wouldn’t have picked that shirt. Why attack the women?

Well I saw the original interview and what I noticed were the tats on his arm, while the shirt said LOUD but I could not see any of the detail. It took a feminist to examine the still frames and get outraged on behalf of all those woman dissuaded from a STEM career by such blatant images. Althouse then comments on Eveleth's tweet:

How is that a shout of feminist outrage? It’s caustic humor. You know, the kind men used to like to say that women couldn’t do? It was Taylor who brought attention to himself, which messed up the moment of triumph for his teammates. When you wear a shirt like that, you’re asking for it… to use a phrase that has been used against women. And I know that in repurposing that old line, I’m putting Rose Eveleth in the place of the rapist, but she didn’t commit any crime against Taylor. She criticized him.

So does this mean that you’re asking for it is now back as a legitimate reason for criticism?

And that assumes that he was actually “sending a message”. Maybe he’s just a dorky scientist who thought that the shirt was cool because he’d like nothing better than a selfie with Seven of Nine.

It seems to me that it’s the man who crumpled in a flood of emotion. I think the women looked straight at the pictures and criticized them. That counts as handling. Taylor retreated. Whatever message he may have thought he was sending through his choice of shirt — and it’s undeniable that he intended to send a message — it wasn’t heard the way he wanted, and he expressed regret.

Taylor went far to the extreme in his choice of clothing. He was asking to be read. His shirt screamed. But what did it say? Some women told the world what they thought it said, and he disowned that statement. Conversation over.

I don’t think he was sending a message at all, but he certainly did crumple, he did retreat and the conversation is certainly over for him. But for the rest of us ….?

Can he melt back into the team — the team that deserves the credit — or do you insist on appropriating him for the purpose of attacking feminism?

I doubt it since he’s useless. But I’m sure they’ll be some other poor, dumb bastard who will be “appropriated” out of the crowd for the purposes of advancing feminism. Presumably that’s okay as yet another double standard – like criticising what people wear because it “sends a message”. No one tell the folks at the next SlutWalk!

This was not just “criticism”, as in I don’t like your shirt. This was criticism with a “message”, and because it had a message it had to be argued that the original target was sending a message.:

This is the sort of casual misogyny that stops women from entering certain scientific fields. They see a guy like that on TV and they don’t feel welcome. They see a poster of greased up women in a colleague’s office and they know they aren’t respected. They hear comments about “bitches” while out at a bar with fellow science students, and they decide to change majors.

Really? This is what 50 years of feminism has produced? Little flowers who have to be protected from dangerous images lest they make the wrong choices? Sounds positively Victorian. Where’s Pat Bartlett when you need her? By the same token has it failed to produce strong woman who can give criticism directly and take the rejoinders (“Well I don’t care what you think” would be the most polite) – but instead given the lead to the same old passive-agressive manipulators using high-school Valley Girl language (” toooootally” to get the guys to act they way they want – and men who burst into tears at the thought that they’ve screwed over the hopes and dreams of young girls by wearing a shirt with fantasy bimbos on it.

Maybe Neveleth and Taylor (the scientist) should get together. They’d make a great statement for feminism’s affect on both men and women.

It could have been a coincidence Reid, as could many other things that happened around that time.

On Q+A this morning Corin Dann was interviewing our PM on climate change. This subject had been raised by Obama at the G20 meeting. You would think on the line of questions that Dann was asking was the little old NZ was a large polluter and needed to do more to curb emissions. Dann completely ignored JK’s responses in that NZ’s emissions were only .14% of the worlds total and that no other country in the world included animal emissions. When will the Dann’s in this world and the Green Party understand that.14% makes no difference to climate change whatsoever. The failed Internet Party candidate Harre on the Q+A panel was as good as Dann in that the eyes of the world were on us to lead on climate change as we had on being nuclear free. More ridiculous nonsense. I don’t know why I bother to watch programmes such as Q+A as this sort of tripe is always dished up. Taxpayer funded of course, through NZ on Air.

Whaleoil’s Pete Belt writes the usual off putting sanctimonious one sided crap in explaining why Travis Poulson split from the blog. Unsurprisingly the majority of the commenters responding are lining up to kiss Belt’s useless arse. At the same time as Slater writes how he doesn’t want the place to become an echo chamber. FFS, Poulson quit becasue that’s what it is. Not that he’s anyone to be complaining. He was pretty heavy handed himself as a mod IMHO.

If Slater is fair go about not wanting an echo chamber he should allow Travis to post a response to Belt’s insipid obsequious shit.

Feminism has been around since the 19th century, long before post-war cultural Marxism.

What you may be referring to is one particular form of feminism, which gets back to my point that some of these terms, including Marxism, are being thrown around without any serious intellectual discernment or care for historical and ideological accuracy.

But that aside Reid, and just between you and I, as I doubt most other people will be interested in this, but there are serious Biblical/Theological problems with conspiracy theories.

The physical shirt I’m wearing is not important – although I wish I had one like that dude who landed the drone on the Alien Reconnaissance Solarsystem Evaluator.
Any shirt is a NZ shirt atm – we are consistently & increasingly punching well above our weight in pretty much every field of sporting, economic, environmental & (it pains me greatly to use the word, but “fair”) National endeavour these days – the AB’s have been a consistent part of that. All these factors are rendering impotent & crippling the further Left in NZ – the AB’s as consistently victorious yet highly civilised Warriors are also good male role models to many in NZ who otherwise may have none.

But you are obviously a Saffer, Pom or Aussie along with the other personal blows you have endured around our national game,
and probably don’t even understand the concept of world beaters.

The council said: “Auckland Council recognises Penny Bright has an interest in transparency issues, but this is about her not paying her fair share of rates.”

So Auckland Council promises to in future list details of contract work, but denies Bright’s rates protest influenced them – rather it was Bright’s comparison with another Council organisation, Auckland Transport, which influenced them …

The council said: “Auckland Council recognises Penny Bright has an interest in transparency issues, but this is about her not paying her fair share of rates.”

I guess they will now continue to assist Bright to meet her full rates obligations.

To be fair to Slater & by association the WO blog… there has been a (sometimes partly justified) but highly sustained attack by the Left & their MSMouth organs.. Like obviously many here Cam has a couple of mental health issues (he has the balls to admit it) and defence is sometimes the best form of attack.
Still pretty much the best investigative (if sometimes misguided) journalism in NZ, especially considering the resources.
Bloody good Mininova cartoons, Maps of the Day etc too.
I think I commented about 5 times over 5 years..the 6th didn’t make it through Pete so I remain purely a reader anyway. Prentice is frightened of my logic too so I’ll just occasionally inflict my wit & charm here…:)

From your comments it seems that you find it inconceivable how anybody born and bred in NZ can ever be against the NZ rugby team. Well sorry to burst your bubble but I am indeed 100% Nil Zild.

Oh, and your parting comment about world beaters is still giving me a good laugh. I take it you do know that rugby is at best a minor sport and that the NZ team are not “world beaters”. If that were the case they would have been good enough to win a RWC away from these shores.

Rugby does not matter Freemark. A confident, mature nation would accept that we love the game and it matters not that others don’t. The problem here is that we insist on telling so many lies about the game and the “importance” of the NZ team.

I know the first is far from the truth and suspect the second also.

BB, you made a comment about the globetrotting franchise not being prepared to change their uniform; Please expand. As far as I know it is the home team in rugby that changes strip to avoid a clash – that bloody silly rule dating back to the days when television was in black and white.

What we witnessed was a ‘game’ between fifteen brave Scots and sixteen NZ players, one of who played the game with a whistle in his mouth.

Having been banned from one thread for having the temerity to write so called obsequious flattery aka sycophancy I wonder if the same intolerance of dissent applies on the Open Mike.
I opined that the reason the Centre-Right was in the ascendancy was because it was correct and the Left are fundamentally wrong. There is no need to invoke the biased MSM or some other bogeyman for electile failure. That merely assumes that The Left is the norm and that voters are not intelligent enough to know what is best for them. What arrogant piffle. The Left as we know it today was strong in the 20th century and arose from the writings of such as Karl Marx whose ideas were formed in the 19th Century. I believe that in the 21st Century the essential failure of the Left to deliver in the last 100 years means that it will inevitably fade. The Labour vote has fallen in each of the last three elections. Was that the fault of Helen Clark, Phil Goff or David Cunliffe? No, just the tide going out on discredited Socialism. A Centrist government like we have now is happy to extend free medical care to children. Maintain interest free student loans. After each of the last three elections the assumption of the Left is that there will be a swing back as there was in the 20th century. 25% is not the lowest tide mark. It can and probably will go lower. In the 19th century in the UK the Liberal party was powerful, but not now.
I am not trying to be provocative, merely giving an opinion. I apologise if such an opinion is so threatening that it needs to be censored and hidden.

Interestingly Auckland Council charges a 10% penalty on rates unpaid after one year, and it appears a further 10% six-monthly after that.
It is unclear if a second year’s unpaid rates are just added to the total or would be first treated 10% penalty after one year then that amount also 10% six-monthly from there on.

Rotorua invoices rates each 3 months and if you are late charges 10%.
Auckland at years end , Tauranga 6 monthly and charges if you are late.

Wonder what the Law actually is?

I have had to put up with the bat shit crazy ramblings of the Labour Party trying to decide who will take their party to another massive failure in 2017. The current lot are a bunch of Tossers and whoever is chosen will ensure many years of a National govt. Thinking outside the square they should keep the current pretender to the throne Mrs. King in the chair. it will not make any difference but she is at least able to string more that 6 words together.

I don’t think anyone is starting a flame war between the blogs, just commenting on the shambles at Whale. I used to visit regularly, and like all blogs, the quality of the comments is a big drawcard. Whaleoil spent the weeks after the election abusing the most popular PM in my lifetime (apparently due to his relationship with Judith Collins who made some serious errors of judgement) and then it seemed all commenters were banned for trivial offences by some nutjob who makes posts about how proud he is of those commenters who do what they’re told. So my daily visits are down to about monthly and those are just to see what trainwreck is currently in progress.

Cactus Kate wrote a post a few years ago about how concerned she was about Cameron Slater’s mental health. Reading that blog recently, either we should all be concerned again, or it’s been taken over by this Pete idiot.

What was done to Whale Oil in the illegal hacking attack was a disgrace. But it seems like it worked.

Seems that councils can set rate deadlines when ever it suits them. They can also add penalties to them so if you are in Auckland you only pay if the full amount is not paid at years end, in Tauranga each 6 months and Rotorua each 3 months.

Looks to me like Rotorua behave like the Banks and make more from overcharges than from the rates.

Have to have a we look at this.

Hi Viking – rates penalties are covered by the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 s.57.

I’m recommending as many citizens and ratepayers do their own ‘due diligence’ – print off s.45 and s.46 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 for yourselves, and check your own Rates Assessment and Rates Invoices for statutory compliance.

If you come under the Auckland Council – I think you’ll be as horrified as I was with the lack of mandatory information which is NOT provided, particularly regarding rates ‘activities’ – ie where rates monies are being spent

Back in Auckland City Council days – we at least got a ‘pie chart’ (albeit missing the ingredients which made up the pie).

With Auckland Council we now get one little sentence:

“The rates you pay help fund new projects and pay for services that benefit you and the region.”

Seriously – THAT’S IT!

Would YOU accept a bill from your mechanic or plumber that didn’t give you a proper breakdown of the components upon which their charges were based?

So – how come its ok for Auckland Council to so blatantly break the law?

Who else is trying to hold them accountable?

A bit of backup would be appreciated Kiwibloggers!

You may recall that my UNPAID efforts that helped get a Local Government and Environment Select Committee Inquiry into the rort of Metrowater ‘charitable payments’ didn’t cost citizens and ratepayers of Auckland City Council one CENT?

But they stopped this planned $320 MILLION rort?

Weren’t aware of this pro bono work that I provided gratis Nookin?

Try doing some ‘due diligence’ yourself and consider giving a bit of credit where it’s due?

As would a decent human being?

That is true of Colin in his political life but I think he needs big credit for investing such a lot of his own money and getting big investors, and a new party to 4% after just three years. He is inexperienced and will makes mistakes but he is no fool or a dodgy politician as Slater repeatedly spews out.

Craig is thick skinned and will keep going as long as he is breathing. He will outlast the media and Slaters hate blog. They will lick his arse before long.

Craig may well be wise to get a lot more specific media training in some facets of his delivery presentation but he has come a long, long way since the first time I heard him speak. He is genuine and you don’t want to turn him into a sock puppet like the rest.

Slater likes to kick anyone when they are easy targets but does front face to face and check both sides of the story before letting rip with slander? Not in my experience.

To me that makes him gutless and that type of journalism is just as bad as the repeaters spewing out the progressive crap in the media.

Before I too was banned for anti National party comments I told him months ago his blog would die if he kept banning people for strong but opinionated comments. He told me to run along. If the Hager emails haven’t woken him up to the reality of life going forward then he must be thick as well. Moderator Pete Belt is a lightweight with no political nous.
