WO has (seemingly) a regime of censorship where a number of posters have been blocked for no apparent reason.
The main excuse appears to be the login web site going toes up.
It’s become a cult of personalities and so a briel scan each day is as close as one would want to get to it.
I had hoped that it would have continued as it was previous to the election but it looks like
nomads in an endless desert looking for relevance..

Rugby is not the national sport or even close to it. Rugby is promoted the way it is for commercial advertising reasons and to promote the brand. Other sports suffer as a result.

Johnboy, and nor is fishing. I think fishing is actually one of the highest participation sports. Either way, the commercial rugby business has nothing to do with our country or culture. A group of guys doing a parody of some stone age dance, followed by groping each other in a paddock, can hardly be called a sport. I am personally embarrassed by the whole thing.

Obama has massively increased the income gap, with no one suffering more than black Americans. Although bankrupt and unable to pay for essential medical care and food for the poor, he has squandered trillions on a never ending series of wars and bailing out the financial institutions and backers, who paid for his campaign, the most expensive presidential campaign in human history.

I wonder where a desperate America will lurch next ? I just hope the next president is elected based on ability and not skin color or marketing hype. I also hope he does what is best for America, rather than special interest groups, and he lets foreign powers fight their own wars.

If it was not for the fact that America has the benefit of printing the worlds reserve currency, this debacle would have been over long ago, and America would have joined its rightful place in the third world alongside Mexico.

The obsession with Rugby is to the detriment of other sports which receive little recognition. NZ achieves at a very high level in many fiercely contested international sports. Most of us have never heard of those athletes, even though they are well known overseas. Anna Frost, Sarah Walker etc would be examples, but there are many others.

Kiwis seem to do best at individual pursuits and average to poor at team events. The ab’s went around 20 years without winning the world champs at a game no other country takes seriously and most people have never heard of. Meanwhile a sack load of world championships were won by individuals.

This lack of recognition results in our top people leaving NZ, and less uptake of sport generally, against a background of declining health from poor lifestyle choices that costs the country billions. Speaking of which, I would love to see what rugby injuries cost this country every year !

Rugby is a competitive sport not a comparable activity to gardening walking or tramping.

Ive been a keen fisho my whole life and a committee member of both sport fishing and game fishing clubs.

There is a hell of a lot of difference between Competition game fishing, competitive sport fishing and catching a feed.

Most people who fish are not playing in a sport .

The Right Way

War seems to have broken out on WhaleOil, sparked by “Pete.” The reality is that most people can tell control freaks from a 100 paces. Every time he posts a narrative on WO he manages to lose “customers.” I was banned from the site for questioning one of “Pete’s” previous missives to only post if opinions appealed to “100,000” other bloggers. I simply asked how I could judge if my opinion mattered to anyone? I said “I’m out of here.” And was banned from posting again. Of course the Pete missive was never enacted and having seen that, I have attempted to re-enroll (unsuccessfully). Now “Pete” says Slater doesn’t care about other people’s opinions. Well, that’s interesting because the only reason I go to WhaleOil is to read them. WhaleOil needs to be careful not to alienate the life-blood of its reason for being: a (mostly) mature exchange of perceptions and ideas. You judge. Have a read of Pete’s defence of his boss today and tell me what you think?

Amongst other things he claims that Slater was ahead of everyone else in picking a problem with Kim Dotcom. I don’t think he picked it until after the raid. To claim some sort of superhuman perception is a bit extravagant.

And Pete claims this “ahead of his time” campaigning against people is why attacking John Key is being perceptive.

Now the natural questions whenever Slater seems to be campaigning are who is he doing it for and who is paying him. As someone at WO does:

Is it wrong to ask if this or other JK “hit job” pieces were sponsored by Judith Collins?

I think the audience would want to know if a particular piece was written by the author or someone else, and / or if there was a fee involved.

And…

No disagreement that National need a credible next leader and having 2-3 candidates to pick from is a good thing.

Its just not Judith Collins…

Does he really think Key should be preparing the way for Collins to take over the leadership?

I notice that comments have been closed on that particular thread on WhaleOil. A pity – I was trying to make the following comment:

I’ve seen this movie before, it’s called Apocalypse Now. It’s the one where Walter Kurtz goes deep into the jungle, creates his own cult, and eventually has to be put out of his misery for the sanity of all concerned. Pete here is clearly playing the Dennis Hopper role of the mad, starry-eyed photojournalist sycophantically worshiping his master.

“What readers can’t see is that Cameron Slater is months, sometimes years ahead of where your awareness is.”

He sees it all, man, he sees it all! ROTFL!!!

The one saving grace, I suppose, is that Slater did not write this doggerel about himself. We can only hope he doesn’t really believe these hyperbolic fantasies, especially the one where he gets to decide governments:

“At some point the decision was made that the Key government should get another run at it.”

There are not enough Star Trek Captains in the world to sufficiently facepalm such a statement. Forgive me for thinking it was the people of New Zealand that decide such things, but no, apparently Whale Oil runs it all now.

Time to rein in some of the onanism, folks! You write a blog. You’re not that important.

I used to be on an electorate committee for one of the lower NI electorates and I was at a regional meeting in Palmy after Key was elected Leader but well before he became PM. He walks in about half an hour late and what struck me was everybody stood up and applauded when he walked in. I thought to myself, what a bunch of sycophants.

And this makes me wonder if that’s not happening all the time, all over the country.

People seem to have this perception about Key that he’s simply the best. He’s not and he never has been. All he’s done is tread the middle ground on every single issue you can think of, he’s never gone out on a limb, for anything. He even compromised on an economic fundamental: asset sales – and wound up calling it “mixed ownership” because he was a big scardy about the difficulty of selling this absolutely economically correct thing to do.

And what we have got from a leader like that, is lukewarm results, everywhere. And that’s not wonderful, that’s mental. And BTW, why do people think Key is skilful? Politics is a hard game, Prebble once said. And the reason he said that is because politics isn’t about taking people where they already want to go, it’s about taking people where they don’t want to go. Not because you’re nasty, but because it’s simply the correct thing to do. And Key hasn’t done that, ever, no matter what the issue. And discerning the middle ground on an issue isn’t rocket science, I do it all the time and I don’t need polls to do it. And Key does have polls to tell him. So IMO, there’s no skill in that. And since Key doesn’t do anything else whatsoever, why pray tell do people rate him as highly as they do?

The world has never been short of leaders like that Reid. Most have been put against walls & shot but a few have managed to store their nation’s wealth in Swiss accounts & see out their days in exile. Fortunately we live in a democracy where liars are crucified at the next General elections.The system may not be as super efficient as a beneficial dictatorship which has long been the most effective form of government but I’m sort of attached to the quaint way we do things here down under.

IOW the NZ public are not quite as thick as you think.

This is not sycophantic worshiping or signalling agreement of his policy direction just an acknowledgement of his strength.
We may have to wait until key vacates the leadership[ of national to see any real right leaning policy direction for the party.
The conservatives may be social conservatives but economically they are more socialist than national.
It will be interesting to see if ACT can revive its brand after the farce that was banks at the helm and the national party treating act as a sock puppet.
Act should be looking for a strong point of difference and clear division from national that could inspire new members and a real reason to vote for them.

Once again Pete’s dimwittery strikes. Shallow thinkers would of course plump for the palpably obvious conclusion Pete and his quoted writer suggests.

The difference between Whale and Pete is that one is a dimwit and the other isn’t.

Therefore since it is palpably obvious to start criticising Key for that reason, one assumes Whale had already thought about that before he made his critical post. And since it’s a good way to degrade one’s credibility to do something so palpably obvious as what Pete and a few others are accusing him of and since Whale isn’t a dimwit and since Whale doesn’t want to degrade his credibility, my thinking is there’s another reason for this line he’s taking.

As my above 6.30 post alludes, there’s a lot of good reasons to degrade the Key myth with some reality. The elections over. It looked close at the time, but thank goodness the opposition shot themselves in the foot with a sledgehammer. (Snigger.) And note Whale didn’t start the critique before, thereby endangering the chance of a conservative 3rd term.

Thing about Whale, he normally has deeper reasons for doing what he does. I’ve been following him even before he started his blog and used to comment on here. And you get to know people’s style. Well, some of us do. Just doing it for Collins, doesn’t match his style. I may be wrong, time will tell. But unlike Pete, Whale is a complex personality. He wouldn’t have achieved what he has, if he wasn’t. So I suggest, don’t treat him as if he’s a profound simpleton, like Pete is doing. Doing so is almost certainly a mistake and you’ll just look like a complete and utter fool.

Yes he is Griff. He’s got a lot of other qualities too. Negotiating and reading strategic dynamics not least amongst them, is why we sailed through the GFC. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not alleging he’s a fool or worthless. Quite the opposite. My point is, with all those talents, he should by rights be making significant inroads into all sorts of long standing problems in the economy, in race relations, in defence, in all sorts of areas. But he isn’t. Not in any way. He’s squandering this opportunity. On our behalf. And for what gain? Because IMO he’s decided he wants to be “the best PM NZ has ever had” and he’s not going to get that by being “nasty.” In his mind. But where does that leave the rest of us?

Those who did would have seen a disgusting display by the NZ junior Rugby League team during their pre game rain dance.

I hope the governing body of world RL watch it, NZ league should be told that any further occurrences will see the rain dance banned from all international games.

I went off and read that thread that Pete George linked to earlier on and it was nothing like what Pete made it out to be.

Like you I’ve known WhaleOil for a long time, but unlike you I’ve ignored him for extended periods, because he’s just a bit sensationalist for me, to put it mildly. In the early days, he relied on naughty pictures to get his rankings up – and it worked. That anything goes mentality is something he has not lost, he’s just got it on a tighter leash right now.

I’m not going to encourage him too much, because who know where that could lead. It’ll go to his head and then he’ll feel like Heaven’s Angels are behind him. Actually, he probably feels like that already, but any added validation would be too much for someone who already self-generates in that way.

Just some ideas nasska.
We cant joke around all the time.
Some commentators on here add insights that help me understand the world.
Others just make me laugh at the futility of it all.

Blogs will always be partisan Griff….it’s the nature of the beast. Okay, we use GD at night much as a social outlet but anything political will always end up adversarial.

I do think that the likes of KB are far, far superior to talkback radio. At least a commenter needs good writing skills to get a point across. Not only that, we can scroll past the crap rather than listening to a halfwit drone on for their allotted three minutes.

I think Kiwiblog is a mix of political commentary, talk back and soap opera.

Places like this seem to also attract those that want free advertising, ala Penny, as well as ideologues who want to make sure a certain POV is represented (I count myself one of these).

What I find very interesting is the number of commentators that this blog has that probably have a picture of Putin with his shirt off as their screen saver. Don’t laugh, the latest from Russia is some sort of exhibit to honour Putin on his birthday comparing him with Hercules.

For the first time today I will touch delicately on the topic of religion … 😉

I was walking down the road this evening to buy another bottle of wine for my friend and I. As I approached a Baptist Church I saw many people pouring in. The unusual thing was the spring in their step and their lively manner. As I drew closer I noted not a single one of the flock looked European. The smart and smiling young Asian man, at the old wooden doors, gave me a friendly wave as I passed by on the way to commit my sinful deeds. This holy anointing oil, as described in the original Hebrew version of the recipe in Exodus (30:22-23), contained over six pounds of kaneh-bosem, a substance identified by respected etymologists, linguists, anthropologists, botanists and other researchers as cannabis, extracted into about six quarts of olive oil, along with a variety of other fragrant herbs. The ancient anointed ones were literally drenched in this potent mixture.

Carl P. Ruck, the scholar who coined the term “entheogen,” is a professor of classical mythology at Boston University, and has researched the history of psychoactive substances in religion for over three decades, working with such luminaries as the father of LSD, Albert Hoffman; entheobotanist Richard Evans Schultes, and mycologist R. Gordon Wasson. On the subject of Old Testament cannabis use he explains:

“There can be little doubt about a role for cannabis in Judaic religion…. There is no way that so important a plant as a fiber source for textiles and nutritive oils and one so easy to grow would have gone unnoticed… the mere harvesting of it would have induced an entheogenic reaction.”

Ruck comments further on the continuation of this practice into the early Christian period: “Obviously the easy availability and long-established tradition of cannabis in early Judaism… would inevitably have included it in the [Christian] mixtures.”

Although most modern people choose to smoke or eat pot, when its active ingredients are transferred into an oil-based carrier, it can also be absorbed through the skin, which is in fact one big organ. In the Bible’s New Testament, Jesus baptized none of his disciples, as is practiced by the Catholic church, but instead anointed them with this potent entheogenic oil, sending out the 12 apostles to do the same. “And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them” (Mark 6:13).

Kea… the bros were Deer cullers in the 70-80s. Don’t know what mammals the ozzie bro hunts now… but basically if it moves and belongs to someone else, its fair game. The ‘naki bro hunts whitetails on his annual trip to St Is. Admittedly both of them are pretty much the worse for wear these days and wouldn’t be able to run for long on a pig hunt.
Pity, coz I’d rather eat wild piggy than a stinky old caprid.

Catching 2 kg kahwai trolling with a 10kg line from a boat out in the bay is not sporting its getting a feed.
Catching the same fish with a one kilo tippet on a fly rod from land is a sport that takes considerable skill and application
Same goes with most extreme forms of fishing.
Some like big game fishing are even team sports
