Real estate agents and politicians flout the no junk mail rule all the time here in ChCh. I’d like to know if it is possible to prosecute as spamming is illegal. Does anyone know?

I’ve debated political junk versus “No Junk Mail” signs with candidates, who claim that the need to promote democracy overrides any individual request not to be pestered.

In other words they put their own interests first. Except that it’s more like to piss people off than get votes.

The legal position with NZPost is that, election material is not classified “junk mail.” It is once every three years; it informs the voters; it is inherent to the political process; and it is usually hand delivered by a neighbour.

The posties post unaddressed spam mail. eg, Magnamail and Readers Digest. I understand the PO are trying to earn a coin or two, but the sending of spam, in my opinion, isn’t right. It’s the oppposite of what ISPs do – block spam from getting into your email inbox. Why should the PO be any different?

I just write “RTS” on the spam mail and put them in the PO’s posting box.

I need a sign like that.
I did start getting my own back on realestate agents. I started calling them at 5am (when I get up and go running). When they asked why I was calling at that hour I told them that if it was convenient for them to ignore my “no junk mail” sign then it was convenient for me to call them at a time that was suitable for me.
I haven’t had an issue with junk mail from leeches for a few months.

And I don’t give a shit if it was delivered by them or their minions. It’s got their name on it.

This is pathetic. We have an election once every 3 years and during the election campaign the person will most likely only get a dozen or two. And this is to help them be informed.

Back in the day when my kids earnt a bit of pocket money delivering pamphlets to the local neighbourhood, each week’s bundle would include instructions as to which pamphlets should be posted in every box and which ones shouldn’t go into the “no junk mail” boxes. They got paid more for the “all boxes, regardless” pamphlets.

I told them that, if confronted, they should offer to give the box a miss if the box owner paid them more than the pamphlet company. They wouldn’t have had the courage to say so, of course, but we live in a polite neighbourhood and no-one ever said anything to them even when the owners were gardening right next to their “no junk mail” signs.

Eh? – what sort of lesson are you teaching your kid?

I am not too polite to tell off somebody else’s brat, especially one that is being as inconsiderate as delivering junk mail to somebody who expressly doesn’t want it.
