I read in today’s Herald that the police (central government) and Auckland local government are going to be rolling out a city-wide comprehensive CCTV network as a precursor to a nationwide system.

If only he were still with us.

But he did accurately write: Freedom is slavery, i.e. to guarantee your freedom we need surveillance; and Ignorance is strength, i.e. you are ignorant of what we are up to and that makes us powerful.

Statists, Defenders of Big Government and the politically naive will no doubt say “if you’ve got nothing to hide, you’ve got nothing to fear”, but they miss the point. It’s about who our leaders might be in 5, 10 or 20 years time. The world might not be as nice a place by then, and these state tools of public safety could easily turn into tools of oppression. Any society can slide into despotism, maybe not in one fell swoop, but progressively.

We owe it to future generations of Kiwis to resist installing the infrastructure to make this possible.

Looks like increased Chinese pushiness – in this case putting an oil rig into the Spratley Islands and then trying to control the surrounding waters of the South China Sea – has resulted in some pushback. In this case there have been sufficiently large and violent riots in Vietnam that China is evacuating thousands of its citizens.

But one thing that struck me about this story was the fact that factories flying the American flag were spared by the rioters.

So much for the theory of “blowback”.

Not quite sure you have got the point of the article.
The argument is that people stay behind in danger because they don’t want to leave their pets.
Therefore, saving pets is a way of saving people.
It’s not about saving pets per se.

When I see a cyclist running a red, or a motorist blocking a cycle lane, I am over come by a violent desire to do harm to their property.

The Problem Gambling Foundation has $2.5m net equity. Therefore it is hardly likely to implode by losing the contract. If the contract was found to be wrongly awarded to the Sallies, the matter can be remedied by an award of damages. Therefore an injunction to stop the contract changing hands is not warranted.

Interesting that the PGF is using a constitutional / public law lawyer to take legal action. Normally a commercial lawyer would be hired for contractural disputes.

The report found property prices in New Zealand, Australia and Britain, among others, are well out of kilter with wages and rents.

In comparison to rents, New Zealand has the most overpriced housing market of all the 34 nations in the OECD, with values found to be 70 percent too high.

peterwn; it’s not a contractual dispute, it’s a judicial review, which looks at the process and whether it has been done in accordance with statute and procedural fairness, so a constitutional/admin lawyer is right.
It does seem a bit rich that an organisation that derives its income from taxpayer funding can use that funding to mount litigation over whether it should receive more of the same. However, I suppose that we all need to be protected against arbitrary and capricious administrative decisions, which is pretty much what they will need to show to succeed. Feed the lawyers.

Did anyone see the Sunday show yesterday evening about a young girl who was born severely disabled and the parents arranged for her to have a hysterectomy? This was strongly opposed by the CEO of IHC on the ridiculous grounds that it is a violation of this child’s rights.

John Key says that immigration is a sign we are doing well but this doesn’t take into account the negatives (house prices, congestion, demand on infrastructure) nor does is consider the least worst argument. China has 1.2B people ( a fact John Key doesn’t appreciate), they have 100million poor and a communist system. People are “quietly taking their money out” (they rely on family networks to a degree) as the government might grab them by the short and curlies. John Key also ignores the fact that immigration benefits some but others recieve little (except perhaps diversity – worth 5c)

Actually, if you read what Griff says, he is agreeing with us. Man does emit CO2 and CO2 is a GHG and does cause warming. We are also causing warming because our cities generate heat. This is called Urban Heat Island Effect. Also deforestation does effect water vapour rising to create clouds which is part of the cooling mechanism. So there is Anthropogenic Global Warming as in man made.

Note that Griff says AGW and NOT Catastrophic AGW which is where the alarmists sit. Personally I’m sceptical of the alarmists view that we will see 4-6 degrees K warming.The warming we have is because of natural variation and mans emissions , and is modest and benign for the Planet. I think we probably get 1-2 degrees warming for every doubling of CO2 which is within the 95% confidence rate from the IPCC .Funnily enough CO2 rising seems to have slowed. And of course the science is never settled.

So welcome Griff, to being sceptical of Dangerous and Catastrophic warming. Careful though, you might end up being called a denier.

We al know that road lice are above the law so red lights don’t apply to them.

The one thing I do object to is these things riding through in-use pedestrian crossings.

Of course they are not the only ones regularly seen by me doing this, city busses and police cars often do the same thing.

John Banks goes on trial today. If he is convicted, then he gets punished. But the onus is on the Crown to prove its case, and Banks is entitled to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The broadcast media seem to have forgotten about the presumption of innocence being, as Horace Rumpole would say the “golden thread” of the criminal justice system.

During this mornings ride in, a young lady ran a red turning right onto the main road I was riding on. I passed her before the next intersection and intended to mention it at the next set of lights.
I had stopped and when she caught up she didn’t stop, she just cruised on through the red at half speed.
So I passed her again and said” You’re going to get collected if you keep running reds”.

Her response?
“Bad Luck”

Except there is only anecdotal evidence that Co2 causes warming. There is as much evidence to support it causing cooling.
Another assumption made by alarmists is that there is no ceiling to how much the earth can warm/cool based on Co2 levels, if in fact they cause it in the first place and are not just a result.

The Earth has gone through longer periods of extreme heat/cool with far deviating Co2 levels. In fact it is hard to put yourself in a position where the two are linked. These periods are often 100’s times longer than humans have existed.

The “little ice age” is over, representing approximately 200 years of cooling followed by 200 years of warming. We are now at a similar temperature that was experienced 400 odd years ago. It is a coincidence that Co2 levels started rising at a similar time, and have no correlation to temperature rise at the time.

Peter highlights that we have a relatively high rate of natural increase in population.
But we also have a large and persistent outflow of NZers (large by any comparative
international standards). That outflow should best be seen as a rational response to
perceived opportunities – those abroad are better than those here. Outflows of New
Zealanders should generally act as a stabilizing force, helping to rebalance the
economy. Economies with slow growing populations need to devote a whole lot
smaller proportion of their real resources to simply maintaining the capital stock per
worker.
Based solely on the fertility and migration choices of New Zealanders (each
presumably behaving fairly rationally), our population growth would have been
growing only quite slowly since the mid 1970s. As it is, our population growth since
1990 has been second or third fastest in the OECD. What changed? Migration
policy did in the early 1990s.
And 80% of our population growth in the last couple of decades has been the net
inflow of non NZ citizens – thus almost purely a matter of discretionary policy
choice. Government policy interventions can act to stymie successful adjustment –
and I believe this to have been the case in NZ over the last two decades. Our negative
NIIP position is larger, our real exchange rate is higher, our real interest rates are
higher, and our capital stock per worker (and associated perceived business
opportunities) are lower than they would have been if we had simply let the selfstabilising
behavior take its course. As John McDermott’s slides showed earlier, that
adjustment was working prior to the mid 1980s.
Among policy and analytical circles in New Zealand there is a pretty high degree of
enthusiasm for high levels of immigration. Some of that stems from the insights of
literature on increasing returns to scale. Whatever the general global story, the actual
productivity track record here in the wake of very strong inward migration is poor.
In an Australian context, the Productivity Commission – hardly a hot-bed of
xenophobia or populism – concluded that any benefits from migration to Australia
were captured by migrants and there were few or no discernible economic benefits to
Australians. And that was in a country already rich and successful and with
materially higher national saving and domestic investment rates than those in NZ.
But very little of the global discussion of migration has factored in the sort of specific
circumstances New Zealand has found itself in. With relatively low national savings
rates, and with a relatively well-educated and skilled domestic workforce, it isn’t
obvious that applying a lot more labour to the situation was the route to success in
trying to reverse decades of relative economic decline (a very different situation say
from Singapore with lots of savings, bringing in people to utilize that domestic
resource)
Labour typically needs capital – houses, roads, factories, shops, offices – and it has
long been recognized that the demand effects of new labour outweigh the supply
effects for the initial period. But we have had not just one wave of new labour, but
repeated waves of new labour, with the numbers if anything generally tending to trend
upwards. Real non-tradables labour and resources need to be used to build the new
capital stock. That will have required the OCR (and the domestic interest rate) to be
higher than otherwise throughout the last two decades.

Accountability and licencing are two different things. The current road licencing system is based on fraud resulting from the refusal of the state to acknowledge the natural right of liberty. At common law ordinary use of a public road is a right and is not subject to licence.

I hear that the Left Wing Attack Brigade have been in action again today, throwing crap at John Banks as he arrives for a trial to do with electoral fraud for a job that he didn’t get anyway.

Rhetorical question, why are lefties so nasty. Why can’t they just leave the law to go through it’s processes, like any normal person would? And why does everything have to get so personal? They do know Banks didn’t win that election, right? I guess they also know that whatever DotCom wanted Banks to do for him wasn’t done (I don’t think Mayor Banks could have done anything about his extradition?)? Is that the problem – Banks didn’t fold like he was supposed to?

And now it has backfired – the case has been rescheduled so John Banks gets to live politically for another day – maybe after September 20. Own goal lefties – ha ha.

How do you make identifying and prosecuting unlawful (and unsafe) behaviour feasible without integrating it to the existing ‘fraudulent’ system?

Firstly, was it unlawful? At common law the benchmark is careless behaviour rather than strict observance of road regulations.

One way of attacking the problem would be popular use of car cameras like the Russians do, with uploading of video to a public road safety site where the public could vote for the most extreme cases of careless behaviour. The highest ranked cases could be broadcast on public media with something like a “do you know this idiot?” theme.

The range from the IPCC AR 5 is from 1-6. You see that? ONE to SIX. The IPCC feel it’s unlikely to be less than ONE but it’s in the range and unlikely to be more than SIX. But six is in the range. High confidence is expressed as from 1.5 – 4.5.
“From AR 5.
“Equilibrium climate sensitivity is likely in the range 1.5°C to 4.5°C (high confidence), extremely unlikely less than 1°C (high confidence), and very unlikely greater than 6°C (medium confidence)”

My view is that is in the lower range. As you can see 1-2 is within 1-6. Which means I think the IPCC are over estimating it.

Yes. The law of the land is common law, not the civil law used by the state. At common law what is relevant is the duty of care for other road users, and this duty becomes irrelevant is there was no one else who could have conceivably been placed in jeopardy at the time.

I am serious as well with my observation that far more dangerous is the idiots riding through in-use pedestrian crossings, often forcing those pedestrians to dodge them.

It is also unfortunately true that I regularly see buses and police cars also ignoring pedestrian crossings – no doubt some of those bicycle riders are also bus drivers and policemen – probably why road lice are above the law when you think about it.

I’m a road lice – and I run red lights as much as possible.

Has anyone tried tripping a sensor on a lice mover ? Hellooooooo ??

Oh well – officialdom is conjuring up an answer. Face recognition technology ? Who knows. They’ll think of something.

Is it that big a deal ? Just don’t impede or impact on others. Can’t blow through cross traffic on their green and I wouldn’t try it. Just for a laugh sometimes I’ll ride around in circles all over the intersection while waiting for a green (when it’s quiet and nothing coming the other way).

Um – just keep in mind before a physical encounter with cyclists – they’re usually fit, in shape – hello . . . warmed-up – and some are already severely pissed off just waiting for some fuckwit to have them on. Yeah !!

Pretty much. Of course there is the risk of not seeing fast moving oncoming traffic before it is too late.
And red light cameras.

Road markings, traffic lights, and road rules are there for a good reason – to improve safety and usability of public roads. But this reason is irrelevant when no one else is affected by breaking the rules.

Got to say my respect for the US judicial system has completely disappeared.

Unlike in NZ, the US judicial system has recognized the common law right to use a public road:
