I agree, Jeremy Paxman sets himself up as the embodiment of the inexorable collapse of the corporate paradigm by expressing his inability to comprehend the damage such a system is inflicting on society and the environment.

Russell Brand does a brilliant job of countering Paxman’s smug tirade with his razor sharp wit and an honest assessment of the reality experienced by vast swathes of people alienated from the decision making process.

Ten meter visibility in Chinese city.

Updated, 8:22 a.m. | School was canceled, traffic was nearly paralyzed and the airport was shut down in the northeast Chinese city of Harbin on Monday as off-the-charts pollution dropped visibility to less than 10 meters in parts of the provincial capital.

On Monday, Calgary elected anti-sprawl crusader Naheed Nenshi to a second term as Mayor. And in Edmonton, 34-year-old Don Iveson, “an up-and-coming hot shot of the same vein of progressive politics”, was elected to replace the city’s retiring mayor.

He is the absolute master of the snappy soundbite. Like all good comedians, he understands language and the power of the double meaning, for example his putdown of Boris Johnson was utterly brilliant, because it was subtle and took Johnson’s supposed strengths and exposed them as those of Tory buffoon in ten or twelve words and let that audience worked it out for itself.

If a New Zealander sells a house to a foreigner, we now have their money and can invest it or even just build a new house with it. This idea that we can somehow lift our standard of living by stopping people bringing money from overseas and spending it in New Zealand is just more crazy upside-down leftist economics.

The old story: our technology has outstripped our humanity (aka our spirituality).

Part of the problem is that our brains are so adaptable, and a relatively new study coming out of the University of Missouri (U of M) shows that violent video games appear to make people more aggressive and desensitized to the violence that we see in our every day world. While this finding seems obvious, it is still relatively groundbreaking in science to understand that the relationship between our mind and our subjective experience actually has physical effects on our body and brain, effects that are dramatic and can even be enduring.

Thoughts are things. We are spiritual beings living in a physical body not physical beings who have a spiritual component. Over several centuries we’ve increasingly allowed those who control the physical world to create a reality which provides the illusion of freedom while causing 90% of people to behave collectively like immature children in the uses to which we put our precious thoughts and attentions. If it’s not childish immature lust via looking at the ubiquitous free porn they’ve provided for us it’s pride, envy and avarice in the way we look at our work and gather our means of living which they’ve also provided for us, designing a society where two incomes is a must simply to keep above water. If it’s neither of those things it’s sloth, wrath and gluttony in the way we drown our sorrows, blame others for our choices and lie down and expect others to provide for us, or simply go out and take what we think we deserve because “we’re entitled.” If that doesn’t describe 9 out of ten people in your experience then I’m very happy for you, you must live somewhere other than where I do.

It doesn’t have to be this way, all you need to do is stop your thoughts from operating on auto-pilot and take control of them.

Man is made and unmade by himself. In the armory of thought he forges the weapons which will destroy him. He also creates the tools with which he will build for himself heavenly mansions of joy and strength and peace. By the right choice and true application of thought man ascends to the divine perfection. By the abuse and wrong application of thought he descends below the level of the beast. Between these two extremes are all the grades of character, and man is their maker and their master.

Anyone in the Real Estate industry on here ? I just noticed DPF’s tweet up on the top left about how his body corp fees for his apartment are up to $9900/yr . A friend of mine has an apartment in downtown Wgt and apparently his have gone up to $1200/mth ( $14,400/yr). What does this do to the apartment market and/or prices ??

It may be caused by a high Insurance Premium given the Earthquake risk in Welly. Lots of buildings down there are getting hammered with rising insurance costs.
The Body Corp pays the insurance.

I have a non trading shelf New Zealand company.
The company will buy any house that a foreigner wants.
I will then rent (being the buying fee) the house to the foreigner under agreement with them buying the house after 12 months say.
Cannot find a CGT either in that ?

We? Where do I collect my share? 🙂

I’m not sure how building a new house means “we” benefit. Remember, before the foreigner purchased the house “we” had a house. If they purchase a house and “we” build a new house, “we” finish off where “we” left off, namely with a house. “We” don’t have two houses because “we” are up an additional foreigner so the availability increases in proportion with the demand. Meanwhile the additional house requires additional infrastructure and reduces an ultimately limited resource.

Some other investment would be a more promising endeavour that might return a net benefit. But any other investment would take that money away from further housing thereby limiting availability relative to demand and any such investment would have to make up for that and deliver more to really be considered a net benefit. Is this likely? Especially since we really have no idea what happens to the money afterwards. Probably goes back into housing to take advantage of the increased demand.

I would also observe that the value of the new house although not increasing the availability of housing would create jobs in that people would be employed to build it. But does that alone make this activity a net benefit to the country? Should we have an immigration policy whereby all you need to do is purchase a house? Seems to me it balances out, maybe slightly one way or the other, but given that space is an important and limited resource we shouldn’t trade on it in this manner. They should have to bring something else, such as skills or additional investment.

Judge David Ruth said the term smoko could mean a refreshment break for some but for others engaged in “this disgusting

So if it’s reasonable for it to have that meaning shouldn’t the store owner be given the benefit of the doubt?

Lawyer Jamie Eng, acting for the ministry, said the focus of the prosecution was to deter other retailers from breaching the Smokefree Environments Act.

So he has five stores and is obviously a great contribution and this is how we treat him? Make an example out of him, without warning, and for something considered fairly trivial by most standards, and arguably shouldn’t be an offence in the first instance.

Obviously the ‘peasants grovelling in the shit’ are there to provide a stark contrast to the King (arbitrarily appointed by some watery tart distributing swords) in his finery.

The ‘peasants’ then completely undermine the ‘King’s’ illusions of authority so thoroughly he ends up physically attacking one of them.
(Help! I’m being repressed! Come and see the violence inherent in the system!)

I know Monty Python also sends up revolutionaries, and there was a little of that in this skit, but the overarching message is that authority is largely illusory and should be challenged.

Potential risk of money laundering

95: Cash intensive industries such as casinos are attractive to money laundering activity. New Zealand’s National Risk Assessment 2010 assessed casinos as presenting moderate to high risk of money laundering.
For this reason, casinos (including all SkyCity casinos) are subject to the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financingof Terrorism Act 2009 (the AML/CFT Act), which comes into force on 30 June 2013.

96: Nothing in the Agreement affects SkyCity’s obligations under the AML/CFT Act. Those obligations include:
a. – developing a risk assessment of the money laundering and terrorism financing risks facing SkyCity

b .- appointing an AML/CFT compliance officer

c. – designing and implementing an AML/CFT programme, which must include:
i. vetting senior managers and staff engaged in AML/CFT related duties
ii. training senior managers and relevant staff on AML/CFT related matters
iii. complying with customer due diligence (CDD) requirements, including determining when enhanced CDD is
required, when simplified CDD might be permitted, and when CDD can be carried out by a person other than
the reporting entity

iv. reporting suspicious transactions

v. monitoring and record keeping, especially in relation to specified high-risk transactions and business
relationships

vi. policies and procedures for how SkyCity will manage and mitigate its risks of money laundering and financing
of terrorism

vii. monitoring and managing compliance with the AML/CFT programme.

97: However, there are aspects of the regulatory concessions that potentially raise the risk of money laundering through SkyCity.

98: For example, the anonymity that can be associated with TITO technology has the potential to facilitate money laundering, by increasing the potential for currency refining and ticket structuring.

In effect, this means that low denomination notes could be fed into one or more gaming machines or kiosks and then be redeemed by ticket into high denomination notes or casino cheques.

Increasing the use of TITO technology (and raising the denominations that can be fed into a machine) may therefore increase the potential for money laundering.

99: Increased use of “white cards” may also lead to increased risk of money laundering.

White cards are an account-based system with a unique identifier that permits transaction sequences to be tracked. However, the form of identification information associated with each card will depend on the “business relationship” between the casino and the white card holder(s).

100: The limits on anonymous cashing-out of TITO and white cards described in paragraphs 69-71 of this paper are aimed at mitigating this potentially higher risk of money laundering.

(2) Information which confirms that the views of OFCANZ on the increased risk of money-laundering were sought by any of the following parties:

a) Department of Internal Affairs
b) Ministry of Economic Development
c) Sky City
d) The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet
e) The Office of the Prime Minister
f) Cabinet
g) Any Cabinet Minister (in particular Steven Joyce)

(3) I am also interested in any information held by OFCANZ on how TITO (Tickets In Tickets Out) can be used for money-laundering at casinos.

I would prefer this information to be provided electronically

(4) All/any information held by OFCANZ which raises concerns about the potential increase in ‘organised crime’ as a result of potentially increased money-laundering opportunities through the proposed NZ International Convention Centre Bill.

A few years ago I & a few others who were being softened up to invest in a business set to produce fruit leather were given a demo of one of these machines. Tip something in one end & it comes out the other like toothpaste. That tin of jellychicken or similar is the result of a laid out chook complete with guts & feathers going through the mincer. Many breakfast foods are extruded.

If nothing else the demo resulted in a few scratchings from the weekly shopping list.

I see the Madeleine Mccann drama is being ignited again by the media. It helps that the whole production has been professionally managed from day one by hired media and PR people. They were employed by the parents, and paid for, along with property and debts, by donations from guilible halfwits.

I agree with the conclusions of the Police and independant investigators. The parents are behind it. The mother has looked contrived and unconvincing from day one. I was not surprise to hear she was behind it all. She is clearly seeking money and fame.

And “shelf” means, or used to mean, the stack of companies registered by an accountant or such, with names such as Dream 1, Dream 2, etc. These were ready for sale and could be changed with new name, etc. It was supposed to be a cheaper, more convenient and quicker means of forming a company. There was nothing sinister in the term.

NZ company registration has been regarded as very lax internationally, but is being tightened up. However, I don’t see how it relates to the Treasury suggestion and general discussion on whether there should be controls on foreigners buying existing houses, along the lines of the controls that exist in many countries.

Tournament Parking strikes again! And no surprises it’s their name in the news again – for all the wrong reasons!

Man is having dinner with daughter / is told his vehicle has been clamped. The previous owner (last year) apparently owes fines totalling $195. Man with daughter protests – explains he is the recent owner, but clamper is adamant – unless he can prove ownership change dates, money has to be paid before he releases the clamp. Impasse. Police not interested – (civil matter). So the poor bugger has to pay $195 to this cowboy outfit (Tournament Parking) for the clamp to be released so he can take his daughter home.

Of course, it’s subsequently proven the fines were not his. So he is due a refund / an apology from Tournament Parking, right? Nah… of course not.

Tournament Parking general manager Rachel Valentine did not respond to Herald phone or email inquiries, but another company official said it had taken steps to direct the money back into Mr Cleaver’s account.

The term ‘customer service’ is clearly foreign to Tournament Parking. Apparently, the man is still waiting for his refund (24 Oct).

Re clampers- there is a simple solution and I would do it if I was ever clamped.

I would call a tow truck and tow the vehicle home and on to my property (don’t leave it outside in the street) and then remove the clamp by whatever means necessary and keep it.

Everyone did that the fuckers would be out of business in a week.

Many of the lurkers on Kiwiblog’s general debate thread seem very hostile to President Obama. Here’s a bone for them.

Michael Field, one of the few journalists (or really few NZers) with a good grasp of what’s going on in the South Pacific, on Radio NZ’s Labour Programme this morning touched on the Indonesian atrocities in western Papua (next to Papaua New Guinea). This territory was disgracefully handed over by the UN to Indonesia when the Dutch pulled out of this colony. There was no concern for the Papuans’ interests or views. Indonesian colonisation good, Western colonisation bad.

Field was talking about an Asian Humans Rights Commission inquiry into atrocities and torture inflicted by Indonesians on Papuans.

Field said the report should have a warning on the cover it’s content is stark and terrible. The Commission has collected 4000 names of people murdered by the Indonesian military. They call this genocide. The Commission says Australian military helicopters helped.

Here’s the Obama hook. As I recall it in his early autobiography, Obama’s Indonesian step father served or had served in the Indonesian Army, and I think served in Papua.

So this wasn’t Obama’s fault, but undoubtedly conspiracy theorists will seize on it.

Then the Turks got on the wrong side in WW1 & had their arses handed to them….the area they controlled was divided between (mandated) by the French & the British. The original inhabitants were not consulted….they went with the land.

That the Jews were allowed to settle & form a nation is not denied but the land involved had been lost by the Arabs nearly a century prior…..it didn’t belong to them.

There was this thing called World War 2, and it was so bad that the world’s nations came together and deemed aggressive war to be the supreme crime and that nobody should be able to hang on to territory gained by conquest. The foundation of Israel was a study in ethnic cleansing, although it wasn’t called that then.

But that was a long time ago. What’s objectionable now is that there are millions of people living under military occupation with no civil rights.

All of this would have likely been sorted out long ago were it not for the fact that we aren’t allowed to talk about Jewish racism, which has led to it running unchecked and to the more racist elements in the Jewish community getting a free pass. Geez it’s only a couple of days since Sheldon Adelson was giving a talk at Yeshiva University in New York where he recommended dropping a nuclear weapon into Iranian territory.

If the rest of us were allowed to openly call out Jewish racism, the community would have been shamed into ending the occupation years ago.

You’re being silly. The issue is the nearly 3,000,000 people living under military occupation in the West Bank, and the other 1.7 million living in an open air prison called Gaza. Those territories are not recognised as part of Israel by any other country, and any settlements in them are violations of international law. The Israelis who live in the West Bank are for the most part ultraconservative religious racists, who even the other Israelis can’t stand. I’ve met some of these people: their levels of ethnocentrism and bigotry defy description.

No sane person is talking about which country controlled what way back when. The issue is the ordinary people who lived there, and whose ancestors had lived here for hundreds of years in the same place, being ethnically cleansed and deprived of their property for no good reason other than to assuage western guilt.

And your little story about Palestine being somehow empty has been largely disproved – by Israeli historians. The creation of Israel was an act of ethnic cleansing.

So you are happy to go back “hundreds” of years but not “thousands”.

Why? The principles involved don’t change with time. Is it just that Western civilisation can’t be made the whipping boy & pay the price?

I see that the three Waihopai saboteurs lost their case in the Court of Appeal and have to pay for the damages they caused. Good job. No money will be got out of them, but it might make others think about damaging someone else’s property for a [stupid] political cause.
