Lynyrd Skynyrd have been flying it proudly at their concerts since the early 70s.
Recently the left-leaning media in the States turned on the surviving members (*there is only Rossington left now) and started calling them racist etc etc
So they begrudgingly took it down.

Thanks Longknives. I like Lynard Skynyrd and I’m sure they didn’t feel they were associating with a symbol of racism but, well, it is what it is. The best book I have read on the subject is ‘Confederates in the Attic’ by Tony Horwitz. Well worth a read just for the fascinating look at the Civil War re-enactors.

One person’s symbol of the old South is another person’s symbol of the most salient feature of the old South – slavery. The Civil War was fought over slavery: one side fought to preserve the union and end slavery and the other fought to maintain their peculiar institution.

If the confederate flag is a symbol of “the South” exactly what is it that “the South” stands for?

The civil war was fought over slavery. You can wax philosophical about “states rights” but it is the right to own another human being as a slave that was the presumed “right” that these brave confederate soldiers fought to uphold.

I think I can see why blacks are “precious” about the notion of their ancestors being used as cattle and that this flag represents those who fought to continue that state of affairs.

The Republicans haven’t always been the goodies and the Democrats haven’t always been the baddies. Didn’t Lincoln himself strongly deprecate the idea that negroes could be the equal of white men? And yet he ranks as a great man, undisputably so. Similarly, the Democrats were strongly identified with the south and segregation right up to the 1960 and the departure of most of the Dixiecrats. History is always just a bit more complex than Kiwiblog comments might pretend.

Except that it is well understood why the Democratic party has lost some of its historical baggage (the southern strategy and the modern democratic support for civil rights). That is why 80-90% of blacks vote democratic.

It is difficult to see how the same can be said for the confederate flag. It’s hard to distinguish hand-waving references to “the south” or “states rights” as being seperated from the fact that the confederate states fought to retain slavery and this was a key issue on which the war was fought.

The flag has also been a symbol used in the wake of Brown v Board of education.

If it is a true representation of “the south” it is difficult to see “the south” as anything other than inherently racist.

Some in Congress have suggested it’s OK if America defaults. I find that stunning. The last major industrial nation to default was Argentina back in December 2001: its currency lost 75% of its value, inflation surged past 100%, unemployment topped 25%, and most families lost more than half of their net worth in a matter of days. Obviously, America is in a stronger position than Argentina — but why would we willingly even come close to this kind of economic catastrophe?

One of the nation’s top credit-rating agencies says that the U.S. Treasury Department is likely to continue paying interest on the government’s debt even if Congress fails to lift the limit on borrowing next week, preserving the nation’s sterling AAA credit rating.

In a memo being circulated on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Moody’s Investors Service offers “answers to frequently asked questions” about the government shutdown, now in its second week, and the federal debt limit. President Obama has said that, unless Congress acts to raise the $16.7 trillion limit by next Thursday, the nation will be at risk of default.

Not so, Moody’s says in the memo dated Oct. 7.

” We believe the government would continue to pay interest and principal on its debt even in the event that the debt limit is not raised, leaving its creditworthiness intact,” the memo says. “The debt limit restricts government expenditures to the amount of its incoming revenues; it does not prohibit the government from servicing its debt. There is no direct connection between the debt limit (actually the exhaustion of the Treasury’s extraordinary measures to raise funds) and a default.

The memo offers a starkly different view of the consequences of congressional inaction on the debt limit than is held by the White House, many policymakers and other financial analysts. During a press conference at the White House Tuesday, Obama said missing the Oct. 17 deadline would invite “economic chaos.”

The Moody’s memo goes on to argue that the situation is actually much less serious than in 2011, when the nation last faced a pitched battle over the debt limit.

“The budget deficit was considerably larger in 2011 than it is currently, so the magnitude of the necessary spending cuts needed after 17 October is lower now than it was then,” the memo says.

Treasury Department officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

83% of all funding that the US govt needs has been passed in the HoR. Reid won’t present the bills to the senate because of ideology, so the funds aren’t yet available.
The US Govt. is receiving billions of dollars each week in revenue – taxes etc. which is adequate to keep the govt. going.

But what is Obumbler doing? Sitting in the White House sulking, or demonising the Repubs, or scare mongering. Shutting tourist venues which don’t need to be closed – Persecuting veterens and stopping them to visit monuments.

The guy is a loser and a wanker, and the American people are starting to see through his scam.

The President is doing his best to frighten Americans and our creditors by claiming if the GOP does not capitulate to his demands and “cleanly” raise the debt ceiling we will default on our debt, damaging forever the full faith and credit of the United States. Simply put, that is a lie!
In fact we are already over the debt limit and the sky hasn’t fallen. The present debt limit is $16.999 trillion. According to Treasury Direct, the Dept. of Treasury’s website the US has already surpassed the debt limit by over $47 trillion.

If the October 17th deadline is passed without an increase in the debt ceiling it simply means the government can’t borrow money and has to “live” on the tax revenue it takes in each month (about $250 billion). Interest on the federal debt runs about $20 billion each month leaving money left to run parts of the government.
Forbes’ Jeffery Dorman describes one way for the remaining dollars to be spent

The federal government estimates it will collect almost $3 trillion in revenue for the fiscal year that runs from October 1, 2013 until September 30, 2014. Below I demonstrate one possible way the federal government could institute some priorities and spend only the amount it receives in revenue.
To begin with, the interest on the national debt must be paid. I will budget $240 billion for that. The White House is guessing a little lower, but interest rates have been rising, so I will play it safe. Next, social security payments should run about $860 billion. Place that as the second priority and we already have spent $1.1 trillion of the $3 trillion we have.

Holding Medicare spending to about its fiscal year 2013 total and making some small cuts to Medicaid and other health spending would keep health care spending by the government to $860 billion. This does not include additional spending for the Affordable Care Act, but we need to prioritize and I am making it a lower priority than the health spending we have already been incurring. Also, there is no need for extra spending for the Affordable Care Act before January 1 since the coverage does not start until then. So as long as the debt ceiling is raised before then, there is no problem.

Veteran’s benefits will cost another $140 billion if we leave it unchanged. Department of Justice programs and general government functions add another $83 billion if their spending levels are held roughly constant. We can save some money by cutting science funding to $10 billion and international affairs spending to $13 billion which is enough to operate the State Department and embassies, but not pay foreign aid. This takes total spending to $2.2 trillion.

If the debt ceiling deadline is missed the federal government will have to prioritize spending. And despite the scary verbiage, there will not be a default unless Obama himself decides to ignore the constitutional direction that interest on our debt comes first.
Obviously nobody believes deficit spending should be brought down to zero immediately that would be irresponsible and will eventually damage the economy. On the same hand if the debt assuming that a debt ceiling freeze is not a permanent fix and lasts just a short while, the government can operate and our debt can be serviced without a blow to the US economy.

Hi Lucia.

Yesterday, on GD, @Don the Kiwi suggested I google Dr. Abdullah Mohammad Sindi to find his article ARAB CIVILIZATION AND ITS IMPACT ON THE WEST. .

As is typical for me, I first research the person to put into perspective how reliable they might be. Unfortunately Dr Sindi does not appear to be in the slightest bit reliable, given that he’s written the following article as well: How the “Holocaust” is a typical Zionist myth.

Therefore, I have to conclude that anything written by the man is seriously suspect.

Because he is a holocaust denier does not invalidate his validity as an historian, in the same way that the SSPX Bp.Johnson has not had his orders invalidated because he too was a holocaust denier. So Sindi’s scholarship, although undoubtedly slanted toward his personal prejudice is not invalidated. Checkout the arab cultures talked about in Newadvent.org – “OUR” website :-). Even though it has not been updated in this area since early last century, IMO in validates much of what Sindi has to say.

I don’t know why people think these things happen by accident, this is a take-down of the US economy from the inside as well as the outside and is guaranteed to be a very hard landing by all but the 1%’ers.

Yvette am totally with you on Fukishima, it’s far worse than people think and always has been. And incredibly fragile. One earthquake (I think 3? may be higher or lower) sees that pool collapse and that exposes the fuel rods to air which immediately goes nuts it burns with a bright flame apparently when exposed to air and that’s why they can’t extract them from the pool and it’s so radioactive they can’t get in to strengthen the building, either. Apparently.

The curious thing is the hydrogen explosions that caused the damage also occurred in Long Island and that building was fine. It’s a standard hazard the buildings are designed for. Interesting.

And I’m not sanguine about radiation in the Pacific because even tho the currents keeps the main flow away from us it will affect every migratory species and once it gets into the food chain our fishing days are over because it will be too dangerous. Radiation is seven times more deadly if it’s consumed than absorbed from the atmosphere, apparently.

They’re not the same thing at all.

Orders are ontological, ie the person is forever changed. There is nothing they can do to change themselves back.

While as denying that any Jews were gassed in the Holocaust completely destroys Sindi’s credibility, judgement and capability of accessing history accurately. Especially because of the vast amounts of evidence FOR the Holocaust. He just refuses to accept it exists. How can you treat a guy like that seriously?

Interesting take on Obamacare

I thought Sue Wood’s airhead take on Q&A yesterday was interesting too. She apparently thinks its racism. Another master stroke of penetrating insight from Sue issues into the wilderness.

While as denying that any Jews were gassed in the Holocaust completely destroys Sindi’s credibility, judgement and capability of accessing history accurately.

Does he specifically say that Lucia or does he merely place an interpretation on a real event which differs from general understanding? I’ve got no problem with the latter, myself.

I found excerpts from an interview with him, and the guy sounds like a complete lunatic:

A U.S.-based Saudi professor and former U.N. fellow says he agrees with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that the Holocaust is a “myth” and says America eventually will collapse like the Soviet Union.

Abdullah Mohammad Sindi, who has taught at four American schools, told Iran’s Mehr News Agency Dec. 26, “I agree wholeheartedly with President Ahmadinejad.”

“There was no such a thing as the ‘Holocaust,’” Sindi said, according to the Middle East Media Research Institute. “The so-called ‘Holocaust’ is nothing but Jewish-Zionist propaganda. There is no proof whatsoever that any living Jew was ever gassed or burned in Nazi Germany or in any of the territories that Nazi Germany occupied during World War II.”

I generally like my historians to be a bit less one-eyed than this.

I don’t have a problem with them, if we want a topic for discussion. Personally I haven’t ever delved into what they say apart from once watching an interesting video on Irving speaking generally but I know why they say what they say.

I also recognise propaganda when I see it and the holocaust as a historical event is played today as propaganda, just like AGW also is. It’s just that one is highly emotional and the other isn’t. But I see them both the same way, just propaganda, these days. Of course it happened. I’m not saying it didn’t. I say, in my own head, so what? I don’t scream in my head hysterically at the humanity of it all, as the propaganda teaches me to, I just say, it happened, like a lot of other brutal mass slaughters throughout history, no better, no worse. The fact that it used “perverted science” as Churchill put it is no more diabolical thinking than any other mass murderers have shown throughout history. The fact it was an attempted genocide is no greater factor than say, the Armenian attempted genocide. All are tragedies. All of them, whether they happened ten, fifty, a hundred or two hundred or two thousand years ago.

Like many of course I find it reprehensible their freedom is curtailed in around 12 countries. I mean, why? And many think that. But unlike many I don’t dismiss out of hand their claims as being too ridiculous for consideration, since I think that’s an emotional not a rational response. I mean how do you know, just know, it’s bullshit, unless you know what it says? It’s impossible. You can’t know.

So one day when I feel like it I might look into their claims, same way I look into claims the British started both world wars in order to contain Germany and prevent her and Russia from allying, an alliance which would have mortally threatened the British Empire. Read Conjuring Hitler. It has plenty of data.

Alternative history is very interesting, it’s not a falsehood that the victor writes the history, and that’s all most people in the West bother to acquaint themselves with. It’s also interesting to look at it from all sides. There’s a book called Hellstorm that is an account of the atrocities the German civilian people suffered under the Allies at the end and also after the war. Most people never think about that.

Interesting points there. Of course the holocaust is used for political purposes today, so are very many historical events. Interpretations change with time, to the point that some claim that history always tells us more about the writer and his or her society than it does about the historical event that are being described.

I grew up there, I lived there for 32 years before I managed to escape and now that I have I wonder why anybody lives there.

The place is a dump, if you remove Parliament from Wellington is ceases to have a reason for being. I often hear people talk about how great the night life is, frankly this is a lie. The last time I was visiting family I happened to drive through the highly over rated Courtney Place and was struck by just how run down, grubby and low rent the place looked.

Parliament should move to Auckland, that is where everything happens anyway and it would save us all a bloody fortune in air fares given that most of the MP’s live up that end of the country anyway.

Leave Wellington to the wind and the earthquakes.

I haven’t watched Campbell for ages and only turned over during an ad break on TV One. That interview with Campbell and Bridges was messy and undignified. Childish eye rolling from Campbell belittling Bridges. Of course those on the left will love this behaviour from Campbell. It’s simply a rude way to treat an elected minister of the crown. Although Campbell might not agree with the views of Bridges he could have at least showed an iota of respect.

It’s only going to get worse. Bridges did ok, but it felt like he was releasing all the frustration of National MPs who have ever had to face Campbell.

A sad day for journalism and interviewing.

Strangely BB, I both agree and disagree.

Courtney Place is a wannabe ChCh “strip” but during the March test in Wellington this year I spent most of my time in upper Cuba Street restaurants and bars, ate great food, drunk very drinkable reds and had the best holiday I’ve had for 20 years.
