I think the barriers to women’s political participation are systemic and are based in the social and cultural pressures that women face everyday, all their lives. We still live in a deeply patriarchal society and as a result it can be very difficult for women to value their own skills and expertise because others don’t.

Parliament is particularly aggressive place and many women quite sensibly decide to engage in politics that is more constructive and less hostile.

So, a crim shoots at police, and is killed in the process.

Cue standard howls of outrage from those who dislike the police, and a hue and cry for the policeman who took the shot to be tried for murder. This will be followed up with the usual comments from the family of the deceased about what a wonderful family man he was, and how he was just misunderstood. There will be some comment about how he should have just been shot in the leg, or why a taser wasn’t used, or why the police pursuit wasn’t stopped at Matamata or something along those lines. The same old bleating and moaning that the lefties come up with time and again after one of these events.

Let’s break it down.

The offender chose to carry out a home invasion.

The offender chose to steal a car and a firearm.

The offender chose to run from police.

The offender chose not to stop at any of the road blocks or spike strips.

The offender chose to discharge a weapon at armed police.

The police chose to protect the community and themselves.

This is a good result.

A good read Pete. I must admit I was somewhat insulted when the Greens first announced this topic. I very much believe that women need to be seen as making it from their own strengths and not because some law favours us.

However, the argument you present raises some interesting aspects. I think women, as mothers, have one of the most important roles in society, however, as Turei points out, it is one that is genuinely undervalued. If a woman is to get to the top in male dominated roles, then they not only have to prove they are equal with a man, but better – they need not just the ‘balls’ but fighting ability of the toughest warrior.

And then when they do get there, they are constantly observed for any ‘feminine’ weaknesses. If they don’t show any, then clearly they are ‘lesbian’, and judged as being somehow defective, because they dare to conduct their business practices, like a man.

One has to wonder how they could possibly forget to pass a by-law that enables them to fine for time-restricted parking breaches.

Pity it wasn’t Auckland – I’d have a nice refund or 5 coming back to me.

– one man crimewave in the New Plymouth area.
– playcentre trashed when burglar (guess ho) could not find cash tin.

I do not see the groundswell of support against the police in this case as there was against Constable ‘A’. But then Mr Wallace went on only one rampage. The other guy was a serial criminal making everyones life a misery.

* good family
* great dad
* his mother will tell us what a good boy he was
* did the police have to shoot?
* the family wants answers!!!!
* has there been a change in police culture?

of course there will be photos everyday. we need the public to identify with this victim as a human being. it should never have happened.

did the police at any stage offer hugs?

and just for a follow up – did the police break speed limits in the pursuit?

was everything done perfect?

the police are supermen, why dont they act like it?

I never thought I would agree with John Minto BUT really his idea for free puiblic transport could be a winner except for the ideological opposition of the conservatives. As for those who say it wouldn’t work because current transport runs in and out of the city centre the solution is simple with twice the buses there should be enough to operate ‘ring’ routes. I suggested this for Dunedin decades ago in answer to the similar comments. I would think even more viable in Auckland that down here. Actually ring routes feeding rail would be a giant steo forward for both Auckland and Dunedin.

Years ago when $7 of my rates went to subsidising a local bus route past my house I was disgusted at the council becuase I only had 13 buses a day, today it is 19. I would happilly pay twice or three times the ‘bus rate’ to subsidise a service which served …. as it is I only use the buses when my car is in the garage for a WOF or other service need. “It has got to pay” and “people should pay for services” are two of the biggest holdbacks to progress towards a sensible society.

Political opportunism at its disgraceful best.

If the government had stepped in earlier there would have been an outcry over the abrogation of democracy. If the Government accepts the unequivocal assurances for the council that all is in order but acts as soon as it has an independent assessment show cause for concern then it is dilatory. If the Govt should have known then Cosgove and Dalziell should have known. They were the local MPs on the spot and had as much access to the information as the government. When did they start agitating for an inquiry into the issue of consents?

too many people will use public transport. it will blow out from only costing 650 million a year (only $430 per person in auckland) to a few billion in no time.

people will still use cars of course, just we wont have the money to keep the roads up to scratch.

the left love public transport – it means you dont have the freedom of choosing how and when you travel.

of course there will be jobs – too many jobs looking after it all. unions grow stronger…

then they are the lost jobs from less car useage but fuck them eh!

people will get to spend more time with their FAMILIES!!!

whenever proposing shit like this, you must also use the word families as much as possible. no one is against families right?

Um… politicians understand that all of the public posturing, bluff and bluster is all a part of the game. Auctioneers don’t go home and sell their work stories to the highest bidder talking at the speed of light, and horserace callers don’t stay in character 24/7 either. That’s your game face mate. It’s all a performance, a play. A look. An image. A brand. Going through the motions. That’s what they do. It’s quite automated. I think there’s something reassuring in the reliability of it all. You know how it works, what to expect. Oh, the Labour Party are calling for John Key’s resignation over this week’s ‘scandal’. Really? Every week they want him to resign or someone to resign or ‘step-down’. You couldn’t make it up. Much better than any drongo rubbish that writers spew onto a screen.

The public can be gullible, but the public is NOT stupid all of the time. Everyone will recall the “democracy” crap over ECAN. But this latest Cosgrove/Dalzeill (what a sad prospect as a mayor) claim will never fool even the most juvenile Cantabrian. What also pisses me off, is that little Gerry is being blamed for not crunching his size 14s all over the ChCh CC.

As I have said many times before, the fault lies with the Act. Marryatt is the ONLY employee of the CCC. Every other CCC employee (some 3000 for Gods sake) works for and is responsible to Marryatt. It does NOT work like that in the real world. But then Government is an arse covering, unreal world.

THIS IS LONG OVERDUE… from the NZ Herald this morning:

*** ” Treasury documents showed that Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy has recommended scaling back funding for Climate Change Research Grants by $2 million in the next financial year, $3.75 million in 2014/15 and $4.25 million in 2015/16.

This would reduce the pool of funding from nearly $10 million a year to $4.5 million a year by 2016.

The contestable grants were used to finance research by tertiary institutions and government agencies on adapting to climate change, reducing emissions and creating carbon sinks, and tapping into business opportunities which arise from climate change.

Treasury backed Mr Guy’s proposal, saying that the funding was introduced in 2007 to support the introduction of the Emissions Trading Scheme and other climate change policies.

Treasury officials said those policies were now fully operational, and “an argument can therefore be made for reviewing the amount of funding for this purpose”. **** ”

Oh dear, What a pity. Never mind. 🙂

Nasska, you’re mistaking the purpose of public transport. It’s to get the guy ahead of you in the queue of cars out of his car so you can get to work quicker. It doesn’t make any difference to you who else is in the bus. All that matters is there’s one less car between you and where you want to go!

Hush your mouth! The next cry will be for there to be surveillance, (sorry mean “security” ) cameras on every lamp post. These could be beamed into every home, into every mobile phone when there is some drama so we can play lions v christians for our entertainment.

Some of the vigilantes on here would love to participate from the comfort of their lounge chairs. Would they have the courage to get out on the street and actually deal with the situations face-to-face? Or send their sons and daughters out to do that?

I feel for the cops who were in that situation this morning.

United Future have submitted over 500 signed membership confirmations to the Electoral Commission.

It will now take the Commission 6-8 weeks to verify if a sample of about 50 of those are legitimate.

Dunne has said he thinks the membership of all parties should be verified every three years. That would be tricky, most parties have online membership and electronic records and would have to gather signed confirmations.

I doubt that the police were doing a fist bump. This is a bad way for it to end, but it looks like the offender left the police with no other option. Sure, the police sometimes get this stuff wrong, but they don’t generally shoot people unless there is no other option – one reason being that stray bullets sometimes hit members of the public.

This sounds like the guy had been playing too much Grand Theft Auto. I saw a cop examining the road near my house. My guess from reading the news is that the guy bowled through there last night, since he’s said to have had a shootout with the cops in Hamilton.

It seems to me that school kids have always used certain words as insults. It might be “gay” now, but that’s only the latest in a long list of insults – homo, fag, geek, nerd, poof, blonde, bitch, spastic, spazzy, retarded, muppet …

What are they going to do? Ban all insults? I’m a professional geek, that’s my job. Should I feel insulted when somebody refers to a geek in an insulting way? My daughter’s blonde, she’s heard all the jokes and insults. What about gingas?

What century are you living in? I work with many high performing women, including the CEO of my company, and none of what you speak exists in the real world. May I ask where you experienced such behaviour?

Naughty is an interesting word, like gay and many others it’s meaning has evolved.

It’s first recorded meaning was “needy, having nothing” derived from naught (1350-1400).
Then it became “wicked, evil, morally wrong” (1520s).

Now it’s somewhere in between as a fairly mild form of misbehaviour.

HOPE MILLS, N.C. — Town officials are considering adopting tougher rules for participation in parades in Hope Mills after an entry in the Independence Day parade prompted complaints.

Farmer Donnie Spell, who has driven his tractor in the Hope Mills parade for years, tacked a sign saying “White History Month – Hug Wht Ppl” to a trailer filled with watermelons that he pulled down Main Street during Thursday’s event.

Spell’s tractor also featured a Confederate flag, which officials said he’s flown before during the Independence Day parade.

His entry form for the parade lists only his antique tractors and a load of watermelons for sale.

“There was no mention of any type of signage,” Town Manager John Ellis said. “At the lineup, our parks and recreation director saw it. The gentleman was asked to remove it. We thought it had been removed.”

Peter Dunne looks likely to do another u-turn on a controversial spy agency law change, and again support the bill.

That’s a ridiculous lead in to a story that doesn’t back up it’s hype.

Dunne voted for the GCSB bill at the first reading to get it to committee. That’s fairly standard.

Now, after public submissions, it’s normal to get down to the nitty gritty of what in the bill is acceptable and what isn’t. So National have to talk to potential support votes to get their bill passed.

So far Key has been happy to make one concession, and it’s an important one – having a panel for oversight rather than just one person.

“This would mean the inspector-general (of Intelligence) could be supported by potentially two other independent people who would play a head-check or sounding board type of role.”

Independent oversight is important.

Mr Dunne said that change “is not sufficient of itself” to secure his support, and he still wants other changes which he will discuss with Mr Key ahead of its second reading.

“I hope he will be prepared to consider them positively, in the same way as he has my strengthened oversight proposal.”

So the negotiations will continue, until we see if both sides are satisfied with the end result. Seems like fairly normal working towards common ground.

I am buoyed by the response.

A used forklift company is in trouble for rehashing an “offensive” advertisement featuring a scantily clad woman, with the catchline “you know you’re not the first … But does that really matter?”

In January, Independent Forklifts was asked to remove an advertisement on RadioLive’s website that featured an image of a woman in dominatrix-type clothing, with a forklift in the background. The Advertising Standards Authority has found it does matter, and has now upheld a further complaint against the company, after it began using an ad similar to that complained about.

The new ad showed a woman dressed in skimpy, provocative clothing, with the same text. Two complainants shared the view the new ad was “shockingly denigrating of women, objectifying them as sex objects”. The advert was a gratuitous objectification of the woman which was likely to cause serious and widespread offence on the grounds of gender, the Complaints Board found.

The “Advertising Standards Authority”. What a fucking joke they would be. Time to run these kind of fascist arseholes out of town.

When white guys shoot at cops they are described as “Gunmen”.

If they want to refer it his military career, it should be “disgraced former soldier”, but “violent savage” works for me.

I can see it now- Hakas at the funeral, Family crying “We want answers”, and an unscrupulous lawyer whispering in their ears about the possibility of some compensation dollars from those evil NZ Police..
