Would you have any suggestions to address the problems blacks face in the USA or
the Maori problems here in NZ ?

If so, what would a couple of them be for eg ?
Even just one ?

And if you do please spare us the usual, “throw more of someone elses money at the problem ?

Marlborough on the move – Quake pushes Blenheim to the east

GPS observations have shown that parts of Marlborough moved up to 5cm to the east during last Sunday’s magnitude 6.5 earthquake.

The maximum amount of surface displacement occurred in a large area between Blenheim and the Awatere Valley, with smaller horizontal movements in other parts of Marlborough. Horizontal movement on the seabed in southern Cook Strait, above the epicentre, was up to 8cm.

Witi Ihimaera is talking out of his arse, if the RNZ Labour Programme interview of his book today is accurate.

The book, White Lies apparently was sparked by Witi’s childhood experience of being cured of a breathing problem by a Maori medicine woman with Maori remedies after Western medicine failed.

According to the Labour Programme reviewer, the traditional remedies included manuka honey. Now this is actually a white settler remedy. There was no honey in NZ before the settlers arrived, because honey bees had to be introduced to the country. Settlers knew honey traditionally has some antiseptic properties, and found manuka honey had a potent form of these.

So if the medicine woman was using manuka honey, she was in fact using a Western remedy.

I hardly mentioned religion Reddy but since you brought it up, I do think it strange that someone should preach in a pulpit, then get elected on a platform of moral standards but seek out strange men for gay encounters & drugs in public toilets. Not too great when they have a thing for little girls either.

I’m in Cash Converters… and that’s my own fault going in there, granted.

I’m looking through the cds and ignoring a young brown kid… this is what he’s doing: pretending to look at cds for 2-3 seconds at a time, and then he’s gone, then he comes back and does it again. This goes on for at least a couple of minutes.

Finally I stop still, and look sort of his way sideways… like… ok, enough… what’s the game? The boy has been hanging off me on purpose for all that time…. that’s right.. to ask me if I can help him buy a video game. ‘No’.

Should I have lied and picked some parts of O’Reilly’s speech to act all moderate so we can roast marshmallows and sing Kumbaya about it? You asked me a question, I answered honestly and gave my reasons for it. There’s a difference between having an open mind and agreeing with you, Bereal. I’m sure that on some things I do agree with you, and some of them would probably surprise you, but I’m hardly going to lie to you in the hopes of you praising my open mind.

Waaaaaaait a minute. This isn’t an honest question at all! This is just a long rhetorical post to make some point without actually being interested in what I think! AND ON KIWIBLOG OF ALL PLACES.

You know, if you treat people with a little politeness and respect, they’re more likely to do the same for you.

Anyway, let’s imagine it’s a world where you asked that question honestly. No, I don’t have any quick solutions like “stop that darned hip hop music” or “bring back the cane at school”. I don’t have solutions that fit into a segment on a TV show, and neither does O’Reilly. Generational poverty and its consequences are complex issues. They are born out of complex broader systems that make such poverty inevitable, and I am perfectly aware that I benefit greatly from those same systems.

My point in responding to O’Reilly’s speech was not to say that his solutions to the problem are inferior to my own, but to note that his solutions don’t even address the problem in the first place. And that it is in his best interests to propose these solutions, because they make him feel good about himself and make his audience feel good about themselves, that they can point at other people and shirk their own responsibilities in the matter.

Throwing tax money at the problem is also no solution, to my mind, as “give them more benefit money” obfuscates the root causes of the problem just as much as “blame them for making bad decisions”.

In fact, social welfare often serves almost exactly the same role as O’Reilly’s style of “solutions”. It relieves the speaker/listener of the burden of responsibility (“well, I pay my taxes”), makes them feel better about themselves (“and look how willing I am to pay taxes to help them out!”), and often just continues to place the burden of changing the inevitable outcomes of a whole societal structure on the folks at the sharp end of that structure (“jeez, they get money for doing nothing and they’re STILL getting into fights and not getting MBAs”).

Ryan- yes I got all of that. As I said, a thinking pattern typical of progressives.

The problem with blacks is lack of morality and that does not come from government, as progs would have it, but from individuals themselves, and necessarily absent of any government lead, for history has shown us all too often where we go when government leads.

Personal morality is the elephant in the room progressives are terrified to confront, given that their constant attacks on this concept over the last few decades are at the root of the fatherless children problem but every other social problem we have. And all they ever want to do is get gummint to fix it.

“Lack of morality comes from the individuals themselves”? What can that possibly mean? Some people are inherently immoral from birth? Or that people choose to become immoral? Either argument is self-defeating. To choose to become immoral is surely an immoral choice – you’d have to already be immoral to make it.

I feel no sympathy at all for those bastards who choose to murder others. Colour or race do not matter, individual responsibility does.

Manolo, choices do not occur in a vacuum and choosers do not appear overnight with no history. To ignore the fact that decision-making is conditioned by circumstances is to completely undermine any chance you have of coming up with a strategy that will change behaviour.

All that is achieved by parroting “individual responsibility” is the relieving of oneself of any responsibility to address others’ circumstances by refusing to acknowledge that those circumstances shape behaviour.
