“According to UN estimates the global population will reach somewhere between 8 and 11 billion by mid-century. Meanwhile nearly half of the current global population is under 25. This is the biggest new generation ever, and a huge potential for further growth. At the same time the per capita consumption of food, water, and manufactured goods is increasing even faster than the population itself.

Yet the left has little to say about all this! There has been a consensus since the 1970s to oppose population control and coercive methods to reduce the birth rate, which has been correct. But opposition to coercive measures is not enough. It does not address the issue of rising population itself, or develop a progressive response to it—it is just against coercion.

It’s now generally accepted that for Labour to win the next election it will need to be a Labour+Green win (at least). Labour no longer compete head to head with National on their own, they have given up on that.

The coalition of the left was given an interesting description:

The Labour party is doing fine under MMP. MMP, if you don’t recall, is supposed to have coalition governments. They provide the meat, the greens provide the healthy veges.

Clearly Labour haven’t been doing fine under MMP over the last two elections and five years. The meat is looking well past it’s best.

And on the last election result and current polling Green veges would not be enough. Labour also need a wilting Winston and possibly a Mana side salad (way out on the left side).

So that could be a meat and three veg coalition.

And Labour may find it tough being the meat in a multi-grained sandwich.

What would it be like having a Meat and three veg coalition?

Not very good weather in Wellington.

Can’t understand why the Australian Labor Party doesn’t go with Rudd. Polls showing a 50/50 chance of Labor winning under Rudd. There must be a number of MPs who would prefer to leave parliament than work under Rudd. Reminds me of the Shearer v Cunliffe debate.

Manas housing policy seems radical but no more than that implied by the Greens Treaty policies:

One of jh’s themes has been dis-satisfaction with the Green Party for not being specific about the outcomes of our policy in relation to the Treaty. “What, specifically, will this country be like if we go down this course?”. It’s a question I have heard many times over the years, and it usually speaks from a position of fear and insecurity for Pakeha: what if I’ll be worse off? or even what if there’s no place for me?

I want to acknowledge that actually we are asking people to do something (and we are doing it too) quite different from what we usually ask with our policy. Normally we have a very clear idea of the outcome we are seeking, and establish a policy to reflect how we will get there.

But the Treaty is different. The words all have the potential to sound pretty hammy, but fundamentally the outcome being sought is a process: the process of absolute good faith negotiation, in which we Pakeha engage from a position of honour – acting ethically and morally.

That process involves courage because we don’t know the outcome (and because we know we have it pretty sweet just how things are, let’s be honest). It is pretty scary, but it’s also pretty damn exciting!

When are the politicians who are negotiating Te Tiriti and forcing the outcomes such as special treatment for Maori throughout all govt depts WITHOUT TELLING PEOPLE WHAT THEY ARE DOING, going to recognise that such tactics are the very opposite of “acting ethically and morally?”

I mean if you’re going to give Maori special treatment in all sorts of areas from education to health to welfare to everything else that the govt engages in, THEN TELL EVERYONE THAT THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE DOING. SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS SO THAT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE PAYING FOR IT KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING.

After all, if you don’t do that for the people who are paying for it and who have a right to know how their money is being spent, then it’s you that are not acting with ethics and morality, isn’t it.

When are the people going to demand that behaviour from their politicians? Not that we should have to, but it’s quite obvious that no bloody politician of either side is going to do it off their own bat, isn’t it. Utter scum.

Manolo – I’ll think you’ll find Dunne finds it hard to secure a seat at the next election. Probably not as hard as John Banks will find it, but still very hard.

I think it will be Labour/Greens/Mana or National/NZ First.

Remember NZ First has a habit of propping up (or bringing down) third term governments. I also believe Labour/Greens/NZ First will not work.

I don’t know anything about any UF strategies other than survival at the moment.

Labour+Green is an extremely common connection now – without one the other cannot get into Government based on current support levels – and current thinking throughout the Labour and Green camps. They are openly promoting themselves as a combo deal.

And Labour+Green+NZ First is also being openly suggested and promoted – and probably necessary based on current support levels to form a government.

Abd Labour+Green+NZ First+Mana is also an obvious possibility – and the recent manufacturing “initiative” was a meat and three veg arrangement.

And that last possibiloity will be more likely of Mana win here, which is being talked about as a real possibility – Mana pushing Labour in Ikaroa-Rāwhiti by-election

And none of that has anything to do with UF strategies, as anyone who observes what is going on will know.

I also believe Labour/Greens/NZ First will not work.

I also think that would be a mix fraught with problems.

But I’m not sure National+NZ First would be much better. It would all depend on one person, someone who has proven he can’t be trusted. A Winston+anyone coalition is a major risk.

” Germany’s ascendancy over Europe will prove short-lived

If demography is destiny, it may be clear within five years that ageing Germany is going the way of Japan. Within 20 years it may equally be clear France and Britain are regaining their 19th century role as the two dominant powers of Europe, albeit a diminished prize.
The European Commission’s 2012 Ageing Report says Germany’s population will shrink from 82m to 66m over the next half century due to social structures that cause low fertility, while France jumps to 74m and Britain to 79m. This is out of date already since the German census revealed in May that the country has 1.5m fewer inhabitants than thought. They miscounted foreigners going home. The total is down to 80.2m.
The old age dependency ratio will jump from 31pc in 2010, to 36pc in 2020, with the workforce shrinking by 200,000 a year this decade. The ratio will climb to 41pc in 2025, 48pc in 2030, and 57pc in 2045. The UK and France will see a much gentler rise.
“Germany is at the high point of its economic output. It will not get any stronger,” said Germany’s EU commissioner, Guenther Oettinger. He accuses his nation of turning flabby, obsessed with “welfare benefits, female quotas, the minimum wage and ‘no’ to shale fracking”.
Jorg Asmussen, Germany’s man at the European Central Bank, made much the same lament recently, warning that the country risks becoming “the sick man of Europe again in five to 10 years” if it does not get a grip on infrastructure and education. Germany’s top university – Munich Technical – ranks 53 in the world. All of the top 19 are Anglo-Saxon.

We have come to believe the narrative that Germany was transformed into a Teutonic Tiger by the Hartz IV reforms of Gerhard Schroder in the country’s Thatcherite blast a decade ago. As always with such stories, it is half true.
The reforms did make it easier for Volkswagen to secure longer hours for no extra pay at German plants by threatening to decamp to Eastern Europe. It is why unit labour costs fell 4.4pc across German manufacturing in the single year of 2005, gaining a spectacular edge over Club Med rivals struggling with ECB-induced credit bubbles. The side-effect for Germany has been the fastest rise in income inequality between rich and poor of any rich country. Life expectancy is falling for poor Germans.
This is the same “internal devaluation” policy now being foisted on Italy, Spain and Portugal, but without the tail-wind of a global boom that made it so much easier for Germany. Wage compression is not the same as reform in any case.
What Germany has is a superb engineering base and an all-conquering car industry, selling the premium brands so much in vogue in China and the Gulf. All effort goes into exports.
This trading miracle is married to sclerotic services and swathes of inefficiency at home, again like Japan. Annual productivity per worker grew by just 0.6pc from 2000 to 2010, compared with 1.4pc for the OECD bloc, lagging so badly that the OECD said Berlin should take lessons from the Australian Productivity Commission.
Germany ranks 20 in the World Bank’s ease of doing business index, falling to 106 for starting a business. The World Economic Forum ranks Germany higher at 6 for competitiveness (the UK is 8), excelling in capacity for innovation (3), product sophistication (3) and local supplier quality (4).
But weaknesses abound, too: mobile broadband (31), availability of venture capital (34), access to loans (44), soundness of banks (75), hiring and firing (127) and flexibility of wages (139).
So no, there is nothing special about Germany’s reforms. It is the business cycle that flatters the profile right now, and so does the wage squeeze that has left Germany with an intra-EMU exchange rate undervalued by 30pc against the South. That anomaly is why Berlin calls the shots in Europe today.
Simon Tilford, from the Centre for European Reform, says Germany was never as weak as it looked earlier this decade, and is not as strong as it looks now. But success goes to the head in politics. The national mood has swung from “self-flagellation” to “hubris”, with some questioning the need for Europe at all. “Germany is much more vulnerable than German policymakers appear to believe. Its economic and political ascendancy will be short-lived,” he said.
A current account surplus of 7pc of GDP is deemed a success when it is really a function of crushed internal demand. The surplus must be recycled as capital, so the country is a prisoner of its own imbalances.
It is easy to see what can go wrong. Japan has just devalued the yen by 35pc against the euro, stealing a march in Chinese and US markets where it competes head on with Germany’s champions.
Angela Merkel’s post-Fukushima decision to wind down Germany’s nuclear industry and opt for Baltic wind turbines is a reckless gamble. Power costs are already going through the roof. Germany risks a full-blown energy crunch.
The US shale bonanza is already bringing matters to a head. “The price of gas in America today is just a quarter of the price in Europe. That is a dramatic competitive shift,” said Harald Schwager from the chemicals giant BASF. His firm is building its new plant in Louisiana.
Germany’s leaders seem sure once again that they have solved the euro crisis: once again I beg to differ. The internal devaluation strategies in the South are self-defeating. Falls in nominal GDP are causing debt dynamics to spin out of control, while youth job wastage is degrading skills.
There will be rupture in the end: either EMU-exit by victim states seeking liberation; or defaults within EMU. Either way, Germany will take it on the chin. Hans Werner Sinn, from the IFO Institute, fears Germans may wake up to find that much of the money put aside for the nation’s old age has gone up in smoke.
Germany is not the villain in this saga. It is as much a victim of the EMU project as any other country, though the damage is delayed and the biggest loss is intangible goodwill. Festering anti-German feelings across half Europe are undoing 50 years of enlightened diplomacy.
As for Germany’s qualities, they are beyond dispute. The country has become the stoutest defender of freedom and democracy in Europe. Its reform miracle, however, is overrated. “

Pete George – Straight-up, do you think Labour/Green/NZ First would really work? How long before Peters and Norman have a fight and one party quits the coalition prompting an election? If I was the Labour leader needing the Greens and NZ First, I wouldn’t bother trying to form a government. At the very most, I’d offer them a confidence and supply deal in return for some of their pet policies, but no positions inside cabinet. It’s just not stable government.

I disagree with you about Ikaroa-Rawhiti too. Labour will romp home. Mana’s polling is very selective.

I predict the Maori Party will win no seats at the next election. Shane Jones will defeat Sharples, Sykes will beat Flavell, and the Labour candidate will take Tariana’s seat.

“Same old same old Labor – even Labor didn’t like to suffer under it – but now it is good enough for you the Australian people – again? – no, it’s not to govern or help you the Australian people, but to save their own asses!” the Libs will repeat that over and over and over.

That aside the caucus can’t work with Rudd, and the Libs will repeat endlessly what Swann and co said about Rudd on the tv during the last Rudd challenge, and that will undermine any image of ‘harmony’ that the labor party trys to portray during the election campaign.
The Libs will also remind the public of all Rudd’s stuff-ups and exagerations whilst he was PM, underminng him further.

Yes, Julia may quit prior to the election and Rudd then becomes PM, and he then shores up a few more votes to save a few more seats for Labor mps – but I doubt it will happen:

Julia has been trying to get the female vote by characterizing Liberal men as, well men, but she has also now created that image for Rudd too! – and if Julia then gets tapped on the shoulder by anyone in Labor, it then appears to woman that Rudd stabbed her – and especially so since that NOT one women in Labour has dared to speak out against her!

She attacked men just last week and her polling of the women’s vote went up just 1% – but the men’s went down 7%!

She’s gone. Labors gone.

What a presumptuous little shit, especially considering I hadn’t even mentioned religion. He went on preach that if I behaved myself the government (I am assuming a future Labour government) might listen, but if not my opinions would be “disregarded”.

Upon further investigation it turns out he is engaged to a bloke, so another wonderful little homo-fascist to add to Labours up an coming ranks.

All I can hope is that enough NZers remember the shit these arrogant pricks foisted on us last time, but I won’t be holding my breath.

Dumbarsed commies on here frequenty peddle the myth that FOX is a”right wing” broadcaster.

They say this not because it is a fact, but because other commies tell them it is so.

In fact all FOX do is give voice to some commentators who are not as far left as most mainstream commentators. Hannity is one who might be reasonably Conservative. Bill O’Reilly is slightly less left than the mainstream. Others are mostly Progressives.

The left wants to deny Hannity etc a voice so therefore promote the lie that FOX is right wing. Its important to the left that they control the argument. Inside every socialist there is a totalitarian screaming to get out.

FOX has a surfeit of left wing commentators- Rivieira, Williams, Powers, Shephard, Coombes, and is now going to boost that sector by hiring one of the most left wing arseholes in the media- A CNN POS called Howard Kurtz.

FOX is not right wing. In fact, just as it slogan suggests, it does try for balance. And it is only cable, meaning its coverage is low compared to network broadcasters. Its right wing commentators are fairly mild in their political inclination. Meaning that in all the media, the public is exposed to maybe a 3% sector that does not follow far left wing doctrine. Nevertheless this is still too much for the left, who want to shut FOX down.

What I would like to see is a NETWORK Conservative broadcaster who is as biased as much to the right as CNN and the rest are to the left. Then we might have some real balance. FOX is just token and largely ineffective. Now it has hired Howard Kurtz it has made that situation even worse.

Samuel Smith @8.56 – I addressed that prior to your question, but again I think Labour+Green+NZF wowuld be very difficult to even patch together into a coalition, and even harder to keep together.

Peters has been unreliable in the past and he’s nowhere near as sharp as he once was, he will do anything for attention and facts don’t matter to him. Any coalition with him in it risks major problems.

I ran 10kms starting at 11pm in Wellington yesterday evening. No streetlights…. out. Overturned clothing bins. Fallen tree blocking footpath. Fire Service at a house I see being built every day….. must’ve had framing coming loose or something.

Exhausting running southward legs into the wind tunnel. Rain wasn’t too bad. First time I’ve run with a heavy PVC wet weather jacket with running shorts. There’s been one worse day….. heavy heavy rain deluge with partially flooded roads/ footpaths some time ago. Back then I enjoyed the novelty of unavoidable ankle deep wading pools. Last night I enjoyed the novelty value of weightlessness when stepping into vicious gusts. 2kms to go with wind at back equals relief and time to party. Memorable way to reach 2 000kms in 2013. Polar blast on the shortest day. 54’07″… 11.08km/h… I’m happy with that. That’s 10km/h or so into it, and 12km/h or so with wind at back.

Without recent purchase of MP3 player… no way I’d bother. Personal soundtrack works wonders. ‘Walking On Sunshine’ was a ‘must include’ track.

It was Bill Clinton, who figured out what was remarkably clear to everyone else except his fellow liberals – that criminals were scumbags and the political price of excusing their depredations was not even remotely worth paying. 😎

When he became president, Clinton reassured the mommies in suburbs across America that he would protect them from the criminal element by famously putting 100,000 cops on the streets.

Liberals had embraced the conservative agenda that the cause of crime is criminals, and that the proper response to criminals is not soul-searching introspection into how society has victimized these unfortunate souls but, rather, to consign them to our dungeons for long periods without a hint of regret. 😎

By figuratively tossing criminals into jail and throwing away the key, the Democrats freed themselves from the soft-on-crime ball and chain. 😎

All their work over the years to normalize homosexuality, to promote acceptance of minorities, and to redefine the roles of women has succeeded. The liberals have largely won these fights. But that success may turn out to be a problem for them in the coming years.

After all, besides savaging Republicans for all sorts of imagined oppressions, what more remains for the left to talk about? Republicans are too sensible with our money? They want America/NZ to be too powerful and too free? 😎

In future elections, the Democrats/Labour desperately seeking to tar his opponent as anti-gay, anti-minority or anti-woman is going to have to contend with a Republican who is gay, a minority, a woman or even all three. Then what will the Democrat/Labour have to talk about? His party’s record on job creation? Ha! 😎

Liberals really did, at some level, believe criminals were victims while modern, mainstream conservatives don’t hate gays or minorities or women or want to keep Kevin Bacon from dancing. 😎

Pretty soon, the liberal’s tired attacks on conservatives as culturally out of touch may draw shrugs instead of votes. 😎

I think some politicians are trustworthy, even if you don’t agree with their agenda, philosophy, policies, party, etc.

Take Shane Jones for example, seems like a straight-up bloke that wouldn’t lie to you. For the sake of balance look at Chris Finlayson – I don’t think he would deliberately lie. Most people on this blog don’t like the Greens, but most of them don’t lie. Hone says what he thinks, don’t think he bothers to try and lie.

Sean Hannity is a bit over the top, but the rest (O’Reilly, Wallace, Van Susteren et al) are so much better than our crap heads it makes me weep.

Moreover, can you imagine Red Radio, the BBC, ABC, TV NZ MSNBC following Murdoch’s example.

One would like to think that on ANZAC day, and on the UK’s November equivalent, the State owned TV networks ( TVNZ, ABC and BBC) would screen something similar.

But, as is often the way, it took a “rapacious and evil” capitalist, in the form of Rupert Murdoch, to provide the platform for a patriotic message. The performer is a showman, but his message is clear. One wonders whether Liberace ever did something similar.

No, in NZ, Aust. and UK, the screening of such items would be deemed by the effete intellectual snobs (to paraphrase Spiro Agnew !) as “warmongering”.

My wife discovered an issue with our 6 year old daughters reading recently.
She went up to school during the day for another issue and spots our daughter aimlessly wandering around the playground with an older boy. Upon further investigation, the boy was supposed to be her “reading buddy” but was just pissing around, “swearing at his friends” and refusing to let her read.

Upon mentioning the issue to the teacher and explaining that my daughter likes reading and wants to participate, the silly bitch said “well she’s so easy going that I thought she would be ok with so and so”. It turns out that the boy is a difficult case and she paired him up with my daughter because she is well behaved and placid and the dopey bitch did it to keep the naughty boy out of her hair!!

This is how these fucking left wingers think, they see it as their job to “balance” society, not facilitate those that want to do better than average.
It fucking pisses me off, I don’t raise my kids properly so some dopey ideologically driven teacher can make her day easier by handicapping my daughters learning.

We found out the same teacher had been telling her students that John Key announced the food in schools policy as a trick to actually stop more food getting to the kids!!

It’s infuriating isn’t it.

My son was denied his win in the school cross country recently as well, he passed this kid right near the finish line, (and it was very close) and the fucking teacher gave the win to the other kid because he comes form a broken family and because he led for most of the race!!.
Even the other kids were calling bullshit on the call.

Anyone that suggests this sort of thing won’t harm our society is an idiot.

Further to Reid’s post about the death of reporter Michael Hastings; it is rather worrying. He sent a tweet to Wikileaks lawyer Jennifer Robinson not long before he died, worrying he was being investigated by the FBI. He then dies in a car crash by driving into a tree that leaves his body burned beyond all recognition.

One thing is for sure though – reporters are saying that since the wiretapping of AP communications, that no source wants to talk anymore.

Associated Press president Gary Pruitt on Wednesday slammed the Department of Justice for acting as “judge, jury and executioner” in the seizure of the news organization’s phone records and he said some of the wire service’s longtime sources have clammed up in fear.

Maybe that’s what the Administration wanted anyway.

Mt Kaukau is an uninhabited hill peak that sits well above, and overlooks, the residential suburb of Khandallah. It takes some walking to reach the summit from Khandallah Park… vertically. To me it’s meaningless news hype reporting to spin numbers. Who cares what the wind speed was atop a big hill? You care what it was on the roads and at your house.

That would be the same as reporting… oooo… there’s snow on Mt Kaukau. Is there? Any snow in the suburbs? No? Well…. whoop de ladi do da then!!

A very interesting article, thanks. There is however one aspect that has been (willfully?) overlooked; the fact that within a few years Germany will be muslim!! This will be because as the declining German birthrate is overtaken by the rising migrant (invriably muslim) birthrate, a tipping point will be reached (already calculated I suspect) and from there it is all down hill. Sadly, when that happens, as with the rest of Europe, the country will quickly become a version of the middle east, albiet in a colder climate. and as we know the ME isn’t exactly ‘expansionist’ (except to try and squash Israel – the tradition enemy). Still, as dreams are free, the writer of the Telegraph article can dream on…

Jane Clifton shows her lack of bias and goes in to bat for Peter Dunne.

The Opposition, and doubtless members of the public, will see the financial penalties Dunne has incurred as perfectly righteous – but that’s a different argument.

But that Dunne should lose these entitlements because a) his party was the only party foolish enough to be honest with the commission, and b) because the law is an ass and it was unclear how to process such a novel situation through the red tape and c) because in all likelihood officials were spooked by the histrionics of Winston and Labour in Parliament about Dunne’s entitlements, is very unfair.

Dunne is facing a tricky climb-back to redeem his career. But the commission needs to redeem itself too, by instigating equal treatment for all registered parties. Having taken such a flinty line with United Future, it should now actively check the numbers for all the parties, and keep a running monitor. That would, of course, be to look for more trouble, so it will probably handily find it lacks the resources for such rigour.

The moral of this story might be that honesty is not necessarily the best policy. Keep quiet and fix your faux pas before anybody notices.

The family of maligned Crewe murders investigator Bruce Hutton is calling for a review of the royal commission of inquiry into the case, in the hope of clearing his name.

The former detective chief inspector led the investigation into the murders of Jeanette and Harvey Crewe in 1970, for which Arthur Allan Thomas was convicted and jailed before being pardoned.

A royal commission in 1980 ruled that Hutton and a colleague had planted a .22 rifle cartridge at the scene to fake evidence against Thomas.

The commission described their conduct as an “unspeakable outrage”.

Hutton died in late March and at his funeral, Deputy Commissioner Mike Bush delivered a eulogy that included a quote from a police report praising Hutton’s integrity as “beyond reproach”.

That in turn prompted the Thomas family to demand that former police officers who suppressed vital information during the case should be prosecuted.

Hutton’s daughter, Erin O’Neill, of Horowhenua, said yesterday that the family had been harassed for years and it was now time “to set the record straight”.

“Dad was a good man, a legend. This murder goes back to 1970. When is the Thomas family going to stop? They are like a dog with a bone, they will not let it go.”

She was proud of her father.

“He had very high values and ethics, passed on to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a hard man but a good man. His integrity was impeccable.

“He would want to get a result in a murder case, he was good at that, but not at the cost of his pride. It would give him no self-pride to do something like plant the cartridge case.”

She said her father had a photo of Rochelle Crewe, the murdered couple’s daughter, in their living room for many years. “He kept the picture as a reminder to him of a job well done . . . where victims were concerned there was great compassion.”

O’Neill grew up with the Crewe case from the age of 13, and said the royal commission suffered from “a lot of political interference”.

She said her father was asked to give evidence to the commission but in the end it was not allowed.

Now she wants to know why.

“It was disgraceful. Who saw the cartridge being planted? Where is the evidence? Because Dad was such a proud man, believed in justice, the law of the land, he believed things would come right, but they haven’t, they have got worse. It is not fair on his family and grandchildren.”

A police review, launched two years ago, of the original police investigation and subsequent court proceedings is still under way in response to questions raised by Rochelle Crewe.Her mother and two sisters remained united in their support for him. His close colleagues had also remained loyal.

Yesterday, Mr Thomas’ brother, Des, said that, if the review did “not answer what we are after, we are going to push for a commission of inquiry. The police did not hand over all the evidence. We need the whole file, nothing withheld”.

A police spokesman said yesterday: “The 1980 inquiry was initiated by the government of the day, which accepted its findings. Police have no interest in revisiting those findings.”

A Government spokesperson said a judicial review, which was the only appropriate way to review the findings, had already been unsuccessful and it would not be appropriate to comment while the police were reviewing the case.

Am pretty sure the police investigation will give her the exoneration she is looking for they are pretty good at looking after there own. I just hate the way the system in this country looks after their own and how the commission of enquiry was dismissed as an ‘opinion’ of guilt.
Appreciate that most cops are honest and would never stoop to these sort of actions but think its disgraceful that the system goes to the lengths it does to cover up the disgraceful actions of some dodgy bent cops who would put winning ahead of the truth and stop at nothing to secure a conviction.

They are not being punished for being honest. In fact, they are not being punished at all.

The rules and stipulations in this case are not specifically designed to punish anybody, they are simply designed to stipulate minimum requirements that all political parties must adhere to in order to apply for and maintain their party registrations. You may argue that the rules are archaic or inappropriate, but they are the rules and must be adhered to.

If a political party doesn’t meet these minimum requirements, then they cannot be legally registered. Punishment doesn’t come into it.

Seeing as quite often there are no other immediately obvious indicators of what I would hope to be the minimum requisite level of intelligence expected of a person in such a profession.

Poorly presented, ill-bred, semi-literate with an increasing tendency to possess an accent not unlike a West Coast coalminer and just generally feral sounding some of them with all the charm and social grace of a used condom. You’re a teacher? You went to a tertiary provider? Seriously? Sometimes it really makes you wonder….

We are certainly going to see an increase of 2 C or more by the end of this century. That’s what my instinct tells me, since I don’t know exactly how emission levels will develop. Other climate researchers might have a different instinct.

Whether it ends up being one, two or three degrees, the exact figure is ultimately not the important thing. Quite apart from our climate simulations, there is a general societal consensus that we should be more conservative with fossil fuels. Also, the more serious effects of climate change won’t affect us for at least 30 years. We have enough time to prepare ourselves.

That doesn’t reassure me everything is all right. Far from it. Man is on Earth entirely by accident and has no purpose in the Universe. I don’t assume our existence and comfort is assured because the explanations are wrong.

Those are not the relevant questions, why did Hutton accept so readily the cartridge had been ‘found’ after an earlier search failed to do so. Why did he pressure Muerant over his evidence? When it was revealed that the cartridge had not even been made at the time of the first search why didn’t he investigate how it had got there in the meantime – only one answer to that: he knew he would have been investigating himself and the trail advancing from the point of manufacture of the cartridge would have placed it in his hands. No police officer ‘beyond reproach’ can reconcile evidence that was clearly planted by not investigating how it came to be planted.

It’s worth noting that Jim Sprott’s proof the case was planted does not prove AAT innocent; Hutton could have been “right for the wrong reasons”. I don’t see any evidence that persuades me ATT is guilty, by the way. I always give people the benefit of the doubt, as you know… 😉

Labourite Imperator fish and his repeater Pete the Pimp George tried to make a parody of the most trusted by throwing “scientists “in at 91.

You’re just about as funny as Scott – but I don’t know if he would like me being described as his repeater, he usually seems to get anoyed with my contributions on his blog.

Talking of which, your host here, the person who gives everyone so much freedom to speak as they like, he commented that the post was “Very good.”

It was black comedy, it didn’t have to be factually totally accurate. But seemingly a bit too close to the mark for some.

one minute it’s fucken hilarious because there’s truth to it,next it’s fucken hilarious because it’s not.

But the point the scientist made was the scientists have lost the public’s trust because they weren’t acting as scientists more like preachers.

As I said,there’s nothing funny about cultural Marxism.

kowtow – but the point Scott made was there’s a lot of weird crazy, conspiracy and sometimes extreme stuff posted here (and not all of it by me!). And it’s noticed and often commented on around the blogosphere.
