everything inside the event horizon is the singularity – not some magic point in side. It is called a singularity because there is a discontinuity at the event horizon and it is unclear what physical laws apply below the event horizon.

The event horizon is not the physical location of a singularity. It is the point were a singularity’s mass is sufficient to stop the escape of light. The singularity at its center is a single point or circular line in our universe.

Tony Alexander’s view on house prices
In BNZ Chief Economist Tony Alexander’s weekly overview, Auckland house prices are set to move upwards nicely. Here are his 19 reasons why:

1. Auckland did not enter the 2008 recession then late-2008 into 2009 global financial crisis with an
over-supply of property. Shortages of personnel constrained house construction from 2004 through
2008.
2. The shortage has become worse in the past four years and last year annual consent numbers were
at a four decade low.
3. The government is explicitly aiming to grow Auckland’s population as a means of achieving “agglomeration” benefits for economic growth which accrue from high interaction amongst economic players.

Agglomeration
There is robust evidence to support the view that larger city/regions are more productive
than smaller ones. In addition to international evidence, several local reports have
recently identified these agglomeration benefits. In our view, the best of these reports
was written by Motu researchers. It found evidence that “localisation” increases
productivity but that “urbanisation” decreases it. Localisation refers to physical clustering
by similar firms, whereas urbanisation is defined as the co-location of diverse firms. This
is an internationally unusual result, and may suggest that greater attention to clustering is
warranted in Auckland.
Given that agglomeration economies appear to exist in Auckland, the size of the resulting
benefits is of interest. There is a wide range of size estimates internationally, with most
suggesting that doubling the size of a city will increase productivity by between 3% and
8%.
Any productivity boost would help Auckland firms compete more effectively against those
in other locations. However, considering the official projection of population growth in
Auckland (43% over the next 24 years), even elasticities at the top end of the international range would result in (agglomeration-sourced) productivity gains of only 3% in total, spread over the next two decades.
Moreover, agglomeration also brings added costs. Large cities also contain forces that
drive people away, and there is some Auckland evidence of such an effect for older
working age people in our report on the composition and scale of Auckland’s economy.
The literature identifies land constraints as a key source of forces pushing people away
from cities, and show up in land rents, the cost of commuting, and congestion. The
resulting trade-off between the costs and benefits of greater population densities is an
issue for regional government, impacting primarily on land-use and transport policy.
These are matters on which some policy coordination is clearly warranted.
In summary, based on the available evidence, it seems clear that modest agglomeration
economies will accrue gradually in Auckland, but they will not be a causative force that
will transform the regional economy. Moreover, a larger and more dense population on
which they rely also imposes costs, notably in the land markets.

Interesting views on opposition parties:

Labour has “died from the inside out”

my impression is that internally Labour is in a really bad way. It is not just the paucity of talent amongst their MPs. Apart from ex-Alliance zealots and trade unionists, Labour seems to have died from the inside out.

Old Greens good, new greens bad.

The hostility and partisanship is a change from what the Greens used to be. Under Rod Donald (a lovely man) and Jeanette Fitzsimmons the Greens were always very careful to be respectful and ‘non partisan’.

I also recall how shocked I was when I met Russel Norman (who was then a researcher in parliament) because he was so obviously hard-left (the other Greens were environmentalists rather than marxists) …

Political stunts and hyper-partisanship may make for good short-term politics, but it completely alienates liberal National supporters and independents.

A dying party and a change for the worse could be the driving force of our next government.

– Serious consideration of the impact of the level and variability of immigration on national saving, and the impact that this might have on the living standards of New Zealanders. There are indications that our high immigration rate has pushed up government spending, house prices and business borrowing.

Has anyone noticed how increasingly irrelevant Whale’s blog has become? It’s now full of posts that have nothing to do with politics. It’s also adopted a user interface that inhibits you quickly scanning posts.
The reason I mention it on this blog is to hope that people with the time and perseverance to read Whale, post links here to the (oh so few) relevant political posts.

ideally we have some sort of cyber parliament based around argument mapping and people with expertise in issues combined with translators who make things understandable to the next level down (as in) those who can write a For Dummies or your Bill Bryson types. What we are seeing is political groupings silencing points of view by not allowing them a voice.
I mean hey, if the Savings Working Group says immigration policy has shot us in the foot that opinion needs elevation and expression even if it tramples on the sensibilities of elitst leftists or the well off business community.

I agree that Whale can be over the top in some of his attacks and crticisms.

Whale still pulls the page viewers though, perhaps he’s catering for a market. But there’s low comment levels on many of his posts.

I keep an eye on Whale Oil but probably read less than 10% of the posts. There are sometimes some worthwhile discussions and there are commenters worth looking out for.

Readership overlaps with here but there also seems to be a substantial alternative readership.

toms – for me blogging is mostly about sharing information, debate and opinion. Going by the number of links far more readers here seem to appreciate cross blog linking than the few who grizzle about it.

I often see comments of interest (yes, opinion, just like your rant is an opinion) that I think are worth full blog posts. And they are often popular going by the page views.

Attacks like your one are commonly attempts at discrediting and diverting from what opinion has been posted.

I think many people recognise that Labour looke stuffed on the inside, and if anything are still getting worse.

I think many people recognise that the Greens have changed substantially from the Donald/Fitzsimons era. They are now far more (openly) socialist and far less accommodating of different opinions and parties.

Parliament benefits from having a strong opposition. I think Labour and Greens are failing us.

Both Labour and Greens seem to think that they should be in Government, all they have to do is convince enough voters that they deserve to hold power. And to do this they think they just have to keep repeating carefully crafted crap, they think if they say it often enough easily influenced voters will eventually remember the slogans and vote them in.

Most of the time when a Labour or Green MP speaks they are parroting – and they sound like it. Gareth Hughes highlighted this with his “hey Clint” moment.

MPs from other parties speak with various degrees of care but in contrast to Labour-Greens I think I am usually hearing a person rather than a party machine.

Whether you agree with them or not:
Key is famous for his free and easy speaking, it sometimes get’s him in to trouble.
Bill English comes across as a sraight talker.
Stephen Joyce sounds like he knows what he’s talking about in detail.
Tony Ryall, Judith Collins, Paula Bennett etc seem to mostly speak their own voices.
Notable National exceptions are Hekia Parata and Aaron Gilmore.

John Banks can speak openl;y but also does quite a bit of phrase repeating.
Hone Harawira speaks his (or his mother’s) mind.
Peter Dunne speaks for himself.
It’s easier for one MP parties.

The Maori MPs often speak for their wider group but don’t sound like parrots. The express different views.

Compare them to David Shearer, Grant Robertson, Russel Norman, Metiria Turei, David Parker, Jacinda Ardern etc etc who are all recidivist repeaters. They seem to have had the ability to think and speak for themselves squashed.

David Shearer has been transformed from not knowing what the hell to say to saying what he has been trained to say.

Who decides what Labour and Greens should be saying?

Yes, a PM has to be lots of things. Given the economy they inherited, and where we are now he and they have done a good job. Throw Christchurch on top of that, they have done well. Its no surprise he is well thought of, and I suspect there were a few left wing voters lining up to get their photo taken with him last night.

A deft touch indeed. Pity the media bale him up over his off the cuff moments such as dying welly. They should have heard what he said about his dickhead list MP last night 🙂

Urban Redneck- It staggers me that New Zealanders are so accepting/indifferent to the new ‘Constitution’ (which is being drafted behind closed doors by Maori’ academics’ without any public consultation).
Considering the calibre of person involved in this Constitutional ‘Review’ (Harawira, Mutu etc) the future for non-Maori New Zealanders is very bleak. Once implemented this will turn New Zealand into the Zimbabwe of the Pacific. I wonder if Williamson will do one of his ‘Hilarious’ speeches as Non-Maori New Zealanders flee the country in droves?

hmmokrightitis – I’ve heard Key speak too, and similar to you. He comes across as natural, knowledgable and sometimes humourous (and very occasionally flawed).

Labour train their leaders so they come across as unnatural, lacking knowledge and humourless (and often flawed). But all they have to do is keep repeating this and eventually people will recognise their brilliance and vote for them.

Former Governor Mike Huckabee (who is not one to give in to rhetoric) thinks Obama will not finish out this term..

I believe that before it’s all over, this president will not fill out his full term. I know that puts me on a limb, but this is not minor. It wasn’t minor when Richard Nixon lied to the American people and worked within those in his administration to cover up what really happened in Watergate. But, I remind you, as bad as Watergate was, because it broke the trust between the president and the people, no one died. This is more serious because four Americans did in fact die.

Larry O’Conner at Breitbart thinks that Huckabee must know something we don’t –

Former Gov. Mike Huckabee is hardly a flame-thrower. His daily, syndicated talk show has been billed as “conversation, not confrontation.” He’s not the type to bang pots and pans in the air and rant until red in the face.
For Huckabee to make such a bold statement is not only newsworthy, but could very well be based on inside information the former governor and presidential candidate has been able to obtain through his powerful connections within the government. His monologue Tuesday morning on his show suggested that Wednesday’s congressional hearings would begin a process so damaging to the Obama Administration that President Obama would have to resign or possibly be impeached. “The highest levels of people in the United States government all the way up to the president knew that what they did tell us was not true.”

Again, this is HUGE. There is a big congressional hearing going on in the U.S that is not being reported much here.

Yup, Im happy JK is our PM. His values mirror mine, and I suspect, a lot of the voting public. I was happy to have a chance to talk to him last night. About how the current economy and legislative environment supports – or doesn’t – SME’s and exporters. Was a bloody good conversation. I noted that my organisation has chosen to maroon our $USD funds as we don’t need to tap them at the moment, and dont need or want to take a large hit.

He noted that David Shearer had made use of the same strategy. As I said, a warm and funny man 🙂

cha, whether or not that link you posted is true (and I haven’t read it), it’s pretty much undisputed that the Obama Administration knew from the outset that the attack was terrorist and nothing to do with any demonstration that got out of hand and lied about it for over a week. They also told teams to stand down at least twice who could have come to the rescue of those being attacked.
The Administration are deliberately responsible for these deaths.

Those are the facts.

This is bigger than Watergate, but is there anyone left (especially in the media) that will hold the Administration to account?

Constitution being written behind closed doors? That would account for all the tv ads, magazine ads, the website, the discussion here and on the radio, then?

Droves of Pakeha leaving the country? Boy you’ve got some pretty deep seated fear issues in there. Well, in fact, all of these questions have some pretty big fear factors associated with them.

cha, those reports are from last year – old news. We know more now from the witnesses who were directly involved. The takeaway from yesterday’s hearing is –

1. Two “stand-down” orders were given while the Benghazi attacks were in progress.
2. The “protest” about a YouTube video was a complete fabrication by the Obama administration.
3. Cheryl Mills, Clinton’s lawyer at the State Department, told witnesses not to speak to House investigators.
4. The diplomatic personnel on the ground acted with incredible, unheralded heroism.
5. Democrats came to rebut the eyewitnesses with talking points.

And the hearing continues….

Should a person be forced to accept people who they do not want in their own home? If so. where do we draw the line. I can see an argument that a motel is obliged to allow homosexual couples to state.

However, I think it quite a different matter in the case of a bed and breakfast in a family home. Should a couple with children who beleives in the traditional definition of marriage be expected to let a room to a homosexual couple in their family home? I think not.

A bed and breakfast is a BUSINESS. They made a contract and the they broke it, purely because they didn’t like lesbians.
Not only that, the couple were forced to drive to another town 50 km away to find alternative available accommodation. So the couple have had additional expenses, not to mention time wasted.
Add in humiliation, and illegal discrimination based on sexual orientation, and I would say the couple deserve considerable financial compensation. I hope they take the B & B owners to the cleaners.

That’s not the issue, Kea.
The B & B is a business.
The business owners broke the law.
The lesbian couple were put under considerable inconvenience as well as additional expense.
They deserve compensation.

But if you want to head down the ‘rights’ path – I wonder if the owners of the B & B “religious freedoms” were effected when they had unmarried heterosexual couples staying there?

The B & B where the lesbians were not accepted as guests presents as more of a fully fledged accommodation business than a “homestay” where the guests may have close contact with their hosts. That is not to say that I agree with the law. Anyone owning a business should be able to choose their customers…..if they make too many wrong decisions then they won’t get to offend very many people…..they’ll lose clientèle & fail financially before long .

My question remains unanswered…

It is no use having-a-go at me, as my personal views are liberal on these matters. But the challenge is to balance the rights of the owners against those of the guests. You have not provided any convincing argument as to why one should have preference over the other.

Very true, nasska. If the business owners don’t want the ‘pink dollar’ then more fool them. Gay couples have considerable financial power.
Regardless of the law (which they have broken IMHO) the couple had to suffer additional financial expense and wasted time – they should be compensated for that at the very least.

Some people responses are interesting. The libertarians think that a retired couple with a couple of spare rooms and maybe a grandchild living with them who want to make a few dollars running a bed & breakfast should have to accept a homosexual couple to stay in a bedroom next to them and their grandchild and come to the breakfast table.

The next thing they will be demanding is if someone wants a flatmate they will have to accept a adult male homosexual bring teenage boys home. The seems to be no limit to the demands of the nutbar libertarians.

Where does this ‘grandchild’ come from? and you know bloody well this is a commercial operation.

And now you don’t want homo’s to even eat breakfast , thats if they can get a room at the inn. Often times staying in motel accommodation (generally 3 -4 nights a week) I have had my breakfast disturbed by homo’s having it off by the buffet.

You are getting more and more pathetic everyday.

PEB, It is you that is making things up. If you read my first first post I accepted that a motel should not be able to exclude homosexuals couples. However, this was a B &B.
