I know that raping friends and family or using them as a punch bag happen at lot more than is prosecuted.

David Garrett – I see no need to apologise to anyone. I’m a little surprised to see what sort of thing you’re backing here, but perhaps that’s because you have come into this discussion quite late. You seem to have been sucked in by what Kea has said about me, which is made up bull. He/she doesn’t represent what I’ve said with any accuracy.

Your understanding of “rape culture” is a bit awry. As far as I know most people would disagree with “the majority of men think rape is either OK or their right”. I certainly don’t think that.

But some men make light of rape and assault on women by joking about it, and by trying to trash anyone who speaks up against it – and that is a part of a culture that gives tacit approval to the minority of men who do think rape is ok or their right. Because if no one says it’s not ok they keep thinking they have most men’s approval.

And men who don’t speak up against the worst of men’s (and women’s) behaviour, in a very small way, contribute to the culture. That is far different from saying all men are rapists.

And I don’t blame men (nor women) who don’t speak up against bad behaviour, understandably not many would be willing to make themselves the target of the type of dishonesty and abuse that is apparent here at times.

The ignorant don’t want to understand any of this, they would rather just keep contributing to an abusive society.

Like a lot of people dime you don’t seem to understand that a NK conflict brings China and the US into the game just as would an Iran conflict bring China and Russia and the US and Israel into the game. Those are the stakes.

dishy, I wasn’t around earlier for your interesting discussion on “explaining is losing”. Perhaps PG’s explanation at 10:20 is a good example of where that expression might be applied!

Note that he concludes his 10:20 comment: “Having a full time father has never been a right for children.” The qualification “full time” was introduced into PG’s argument somewhat belatedly, well after his original 09:29 assertion about kids not having any guaranteed rights to have a father / parents around. It appears to be an attempt to “soften” that original assertion, or to “shift the ground” on which PG was attempting to debate his point. It’s not an uncommon practice.

In my view, the illustration of fathers going overseas to fight in major wars is a bit of a red herring anyway. Those who go away to war (conscripted or otherwise) do so in the reasonable expectation that it will all be over in a relatively short time – months perhaps, at worst 2 or 3 years. Overwhelmingly they don’t abandon their kids, but rather they depart with a sense of duty – fully expecting to be back home with their families after a relatively short absence.

I like to think that in most circumstances, kids can expect to have their parents around, or be in regular communication with them. Some never have that opportunity for various reasons; others lose it through the parent’s death or as a tragic consequence of a more serious form of family break-up. A child’s customary expectation of parental contact is hardly negated, however, by the child’s parent (usually the father) going away to fight for their country in a war.

But then not only to do it once but keep doing it and defend your practices, that’s a force 10 on the Beaufort scale scale of roaring mentalism.

I mean I’ve been called many things on many occasions and I don’t care. In fact I never even remember who called me what and when, it’s just not in my need to know recall banks. I just don’t care. I never take it on board, I know why I say what I say and I know what evidence I have and if the person calling me things doesn’t have that I don’t blame him/her for it. But you seem to take it on board and use it to draw conclusions about who that person is, rather than how that person was responding in that particular debate at that particular time. And again Pete, that’s roaring mentalism rearing its ugly head.

Meanwhile in the real world, China is NK’s most important and only ally, and if NK is hammered by bully-boy standover tactics, she’s not going to standby and let it happen.

China is starting to flex its considerable muscle and grows stronger every day. At the moment she’s by far weaker than the US but in all sorts of areas ground is being made fast as I say, every single day.

Obama and his advisers decided to switch US attention to the Pacific region from the European region two years ago purely because of what China has been doing.

China is not going to precipitate an action, it is not in her interests at present to do so. But she has allowed NK to make this declaration, it wouldn’t have been made without Chinese approval, only childish fantasy-worlds permit the making of this declaration is because of a childish tantrum by a young new leader, that just doesn’t happen, in the real world where real countries do real things. And she must therefore have had very good reasons for permitting Kim Jong-Un to take this Defcon-4 step.

This is a very serious diplomatic move, and such moves are always calculated. We are going to witness over the coming days a very carefully choreographed set of events in which neither of the main players have the full set of cards possessed by the opponent. Lots of what we read in the media will be massaged and manipulated propaganda and the real things that happen I doubt will be covered at all. But these are only the first hours of that, it’s going to be fascinating, for those of us who watch these things.

reality is, china would pull them back into line before they attacked. if they did attack it would be after they ignored china.

i was having dinner with a south korean factory owner during my last visit to china. his theory is no one wants a unified korea. it would be a seriously powerful country. japan, china.. no one wants it. so they keep fucking with the area.

There is a rape culture in some parts of society which is exactly as PG states. The emotional, physical and social cost of rape is often underestimated or played down depending on the circumstances, which allows some to partially justify or at least excuse the behaviour.

A young woman, dressed in a miniskirt and midriff top walks through a park at 3 a.m. in the morning – now honestly tell me you have not heard people say ‘ well she was asking for it wasn’t she’ or at least some similar comment that puts at least part of the blame back on to the victim. A young woman goes so far with her drunken boyfriend and then says no, but he doesn’t stop and so on.

The amount of mothers I have heard try and excuse their sons behaviour by blaming the victim – supports PG’s argument.

Reid, you’ve got it wrong in your diagnosis on abuse and name calling, I’ve experienced and survived plenty of it. I point it out, that doesn’t mean it upsets me. The fact that provocations don’t upset me seems to annoy others.

When some people have what they say challenged the only way they know how to deal with it is to escalate it into a confrontation. It’s a common problem with some men, hence disagreements at home can escalate into arguments and sometimes violence – Kea’s “shut his nagging wife up using reasonable physical force” sort of thing.

And it happens here quite often, challenges can turn into attempts to assault the challenger blog style.

Again, it doesn’t bother me when it happens – it seems to bother those who try it and doesn’t get the reaction the intend in return. They just don’t know how to talk things through. A common male problem.

And China apparently holds the same view.

Pete it’s not so much the name-calling but the false extrapolation you’ve made and stick by as to the attitude of millions of men whom you’ve never met.

You do seem to have thing with the name-calling however and it’s long-standing and I’ve never understood why. I mean KB is, like The Stranded, an adult forum for political debate. It’s robust and politics is emotional. Those are the parameters. If you want polite debate with no-name calling then go look at some recipe threads or possibly bridge-club and croquet sites. But if you want robust political debate with emotion then come here. And if you get that and you don’t like it, then don’t take it personally, just bury it in a tight little ball and let it out at the appropriate moment, like The Simpsons told us all how to do. (I think it was Lisa, and she certainly knows what she’s talking about, doesn’t she.)

To be fair, the US would have done far better in Asia, if its service people did not have types like Peter George accusing them of abandoning their families and being rapists, as they fought and died in foreign lands.

I could imagine PG being the type who would hit on the wifes of men in service, telling them how they were abandoned by their husbands so they could go and rape. He is doing it even now in peace time !

Here’s a reason to be concerned about so called same sex marriage. I see an MP in the UK wants the ancient chapel of Westminster turned into a multifaith prayer room where queers could get married . It appears Camerons’ govt may support this.
The MP pushing this is Chris Bryant, Labour and queer. He was the first person (couple) civilly unioned at Parliament. Why is he invovled in the St Mary stuff? I’d guess he wants to be the first “married ” there.

At heart this is what it’ about ,a small group of radicals overturning our history,culture and traditions for their own narrow agenda.

2. Stereotyping is something we all do. There are sound evolutionary reasons for it. It is about learning from prior experience, among other things.

3. Offense is a subjective emotion and not a description of an external event.

What a load of rubbish, I would have called it ignorant, but you have been told again and again that gays can already adopt children now as individuals – all that would change with same sex marriage is that they could adopt as couples. Till now a couple would have to have one of the two adopt the child alone but they would still raise the child as a couple.

Being wilfully ignorant of the facts is a deliberate misrepresentation, outright lying.

Kea, no one is pushing for the right of gays to adopt, because they already can. So stop saying what is not so.

The same sex marriage only enables them to adopt as a couple – in that equality to other couples.

Legislation limiting adoption to male and female partners can still be proposed after same sex marriage law. If that is what you and others opposed to single parent and same sex couple parent adoption want.

And the only reason why there can be pressure in other countries for churches to marry same sex couples is because they do not have marriage legislation like we have. Our legislation specifically protects right of conscience at the individual and group/church level, so that no celebrant can be compelled to act at any ceremony they do not want to. This is the first change in marriage law for over 50 years, and so the now expanded upon and enhanced protection is likely to be around another 50 years.
