No, he is under no obligation to say any more.
Yes, it may be necessary to save his poitical career.

He may have genuinely mentally parked the account and has just suddenly realised his mistake as he has said. It would be unfair to expect him to do more than other MPs are required to do. But like ain’t always fair, especially political life. His career may swing on what he does now.

Really, when stories like this come out, it is hard not to think Asians are pushing up the prices in Auckland.

I don’t know anything about it Manolo, apart from what is in that article. It looks like a new manager is changing a bit of culture there, looking at better use of money. That seems like a good thing to me so I don’t know what your problem is.

The Cyprus situation has hightened focus on whether NZ bank depositors could take a ‘haircut’. The Reserve Bank wants banks to put ‘haircut’ facilities in their systems, which the banks do not really want to do. The Greens, Winston, etc are all leaping up and down about it wanting the Government to guarantee banks, which John Key will not do. Interestingly the Cyprus Government guaranteed its banks, but this has not saved depositors from facing a ‘haircut’ demanded by EU financiers. Cyprus Government is resisting the move with the possible consequence that depositors will by default take a haircut of Yul Brynner portions instead of a ‘short back and sides’.

Same could apply in NZ, although the banks and opponents are probably reckoning that the absence of a ‘haircut’ mechanism effectively forces the Government to guarantee banks, despite there being no formal guarantee scheme.

Anyway Russell Norman of the Greens is actually proposing that savers (depositors and fixed interest investors) take a continuing ‘haircut’ anyway since ‘quantative easing’ (aka printing money) is all about applying ‘haircuts’ to such savers. No wonder many people prefer to invest in ‘bricks and mortar’ much to the despair of Bernard Hickey, fund managers, politicians, etc..

I know the media loves to milk a good heartstrings / tear-jerker story… but still…

Its just another “inappropriate and crony appointment” – seems to be very much in Ms Collins style. However, to be fair, I think such appointments are typical of all parliaments, and not something exclusive to the current.

Susan Devoy is the wrong person for this job for very many reasons – lack of experience and past evidence of poor judgement just two of them. Make her Commissioner of anything Sporty – no problem, but this one is just way beyond her – it will end in tears.

Interesting NZ Herald poll out this morning.

It illustrates how volatile the support is between all the current minor parties – AND how far out of touch the MSM is as they continue their pet crusades.

It now seems clear that the great unwashed have brains that work without MSM prompting, that they can (well, some) read, hear see and assimilate, correctly, all the nasty events in other nations, and conclude that, well, all things considered, maybe we are not as bad as some suggest.

Bear in mind that the latest “brain fade” incident has to be factored, similarly the IMF report. The latter, however, I expect to have little impact with the masses. I doubt that it will even penetrate the thick MSM skulls.

The bad news is that J. Key et al may be lulled into a false sense of security with 18 months until the 2014 GE is held. Over-confidence, Messrs W. Eagleson and S. Joyce, has upset many high flyers.

Hire wire acts are fraught with danger!

The report won’t have impact, but if the signs of improvement continue to grow then the masses will notice the effects of that, especially if unemployment starts to trend down.

Next year’s election will probably be mostly won and lost on the economy.

The brain fade… precisely my point. That was not part of the poll. But I don’t expect it to matter as much as the media might now suggest. The public, I suspect, notes and moves on. They did so with dottiecom, J.Banks and J.Key. However, as V.Small says this morning, it does give J.Key a more than adequate riposte come 2014.

The economy…yes it will be the elephant in the room, so to speak. But will our economic circus be a three ring “bungling bnothers”, or a (euro) Roman? And will the MSM know and accurately report any difference?

It seems that in Cyprus, the EU and IMF first pushed the local government to just levy the unsecured depositors, those with balances over 100K Euro. However the locals preferred to levy everyone, probably in order to attempt to mollify the large depositors who are supposed to be (at least in part) Russian Mafiosi types. Probably a bit of self preservation creeping in !

If they’d stuck with this original proposal I doubt there would be the same turmoil.

While normal Americans have to endure pat-downs and other ignominies from the TSA, now Saudis coming into the U.S are to be part of a “trusted passport” scheme. Never mind that 15 of the 19 plane jackers on 9/11 came from Saudi Arabia.

A Department of Homeland Security program intended to give “trusted traveler” status to low-risk airline passengers soon will be extended to Saudi travelers, opening the program to criticism for accommodating the country that produced 15 of the 19 hijackers behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Sources voiced concern about the decision to the Investigative Project on Terrorism, which issued a report Wednesday on the under-the-radar announcement — which was first made by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano after meeting in January with her Saudi counterpart. According to the IPT, this would be the first time the Saudi government has been given such a direct role in fast-tracking people for entry into the United States.

I was under the impression the National Party were in government, not Labour, and therefore it is the National Party that currently sets tax policy? Why don’t we talk about their successes (aided and abetted by the political prostitute) on tax policy for a change?

– Raising GST, an outright breaking of their election promises

– Hugely increasing taxpayer uncertainty and harming inwards investment by letting the IRD run rampant over ordinary commercial transactions with the use of the anti-avoidance provisions (aided by lemming judges unexperienced in taxation)

– Trashing the LAQC regime and replacing it with diabolically drafted LTC provisions

– The failure to entertain a capital gains tax, meaning one of the most fundamental forms of income (in the economic sense, before Kiwiblogs resident broke, overgeared property investors start screaming at me) continues to be untaxed, which will lead to an enormous revenue gap with NZ’s ageing population

– Continuing to rely far too heavily on mobile bases of taxation (human capital and corporate income tax)

– Hare-braned schemes like the FBT carpark fiasco

One expert believes Nick Smith may have picked the wrong man for a fight in Auckland Mayor Len Brown.

The Housing Minister and Auckland Council are at loggerheads over whether Auckland should build up – or build out.

Dr Smith says more land should be made available for housing on Auckland’s urban fringes.

But Massey University’s Andy Asquith suspects Dr Smith is still hankering over the ideal of quarter acre sections.

“Many, many young people, young professionals, don’t want to live in the country. They want to live close to where they work, to where leisure facilities are, shopping facilities.”

Dr Asquith says the medium density housing the council is looking at allows for that – and if Len Brown is re-elected mayor this year, as is likely, he can argue he has the backing of Aucklanders.

So can some one explain to me how it is possible for oppositon mps to rack up so much more in expenses for the Oct-Dec quarter than the Government? National Average $10,502, ACT $0, UF $1173, Maori Party $11,391 versus Labour $16,987, Greens $16,902, NZF $17,107, Mana $33,682 and Independant $13,510! I mean what do they do to justify those kinds of expenses? They don’t have ministerial portfolios or responsibilities? For a Green MP Metiria Turei sure spends a lot of time flying $15,000 worth; how does that impact the environment or her carbon footprint?

The new Families Commission boss has called in auditors after he found an Australian consultant was paid more than $400,000.

Angela Tidmarsh was seconded from the Australian Institute of Family Studies on an hourly rate of around $120.

Almost $40,000 was also spent on her travel and accommodation costs.

Acting chief executive Len Cook says hiring her was sensible but he’s concerned the costs of the temporary arrangement carried on much longer than they should have.

“We’re not a finance company that’s given away a whole lot of money and ruined people’s homes. Here am I, I’m a new chief executive saying ‘I don’t agree with that judgement’.”

Mr Cook says he’s a new broom and he needs to challenge things.

I hope the voters in that Wellington suburb send the prick to Afghanistan.

The most important piece raised by Nickb at 1.05 p.m. is the bit about raising taxpayer uncertainty.
There is a big shit fight coming up as taxpayers who have scrupulously followed the letter of the law, in particular section EC 20 of the tax act; the Inland Revenue Department will cripple them with legal fees before they find out that the taxpayers had merely followed the law that had been in place since about 1988.

According to Clare Curran, Telecom is about to dump 1500 employees.

I imagine that Telecom is going through a compulsory consultation process which it will be doing in confidence – probably dealing directly with the union and its members. I would think that the process is fairly well advanced given that Telecom says that it is going to make an announcement in weeks rather than months. I would have thought that Ms Curran would have had more respect for the employees then come out with an extravagant statement which cannot, at this stage, be substantiated. I have to question her source of information. Is it the union? Nice way for her to break the news of impending redundancies – grabbing headlines with extravagant announcements!

You can’t say you weren’t warned. A parliamentary inquiry into manufacturing this week heard there are no checks on the manufacturing standards of the wagons imported from China.

She detailed a number of issues and problems with Chines manufactured wagons.

Jim Quinn responded, claiming that Curran’s column “contains several factual errors”.

One of them has unreliable sources or motives, and it raises questions about the manufacturing inquiry. Curran versus KiwiRail

North Korea has threatened to target US airbases in Okinawa and Guam as it issued an air raid alert on Thursday and ordered its military to stand ready, the country’s state media reported.

Next thing you know they will be threatening to feed their starving people ! These guys must be one of the few who still believe socialism works (aside from white middle class folks comfortably cocooned in a capitalist society)

Prime Minister John Key waded into the fracking debate yesterday, accusing its opponents of talking nonsense.

At a Taranaki energy site, he said he had had enough of the scaremongering over the practice, particularly from the Green Party.

“From what they’re saying, you’d think that because of fracking we’ll all go to hell in a handbasket,” he said.

“But the truth of the matter is that the practice has been going safely on in Taranaki for the past 30 years without any issues. And last year the parliamentary commissioner for the environment gave it a tick of approval in a preliminary report on fracking, and I expect that nothing will change in her final report when it is issued later this year.”

Employers will be able to pay 16-to-19-year-olds in new jobs $11 an hour after a controversial bill was passed into law by one vote.

Unions immediately decried the adoption of a youth wage, which is nearly $3 below the minimum wage, but the National-led Government argued it would increase opportunities for young people.
