It’s a bit like any protest that I see John Minto/Sue Bradford/Penny Bright at. I just switch off, and any message they might have had is lost – because I just can’t take them seriously any more.

Longknives – the Council had to clean up Aotea Square, and the small patch just across from the Town Hall where OccupyAuckland set up, and very probably Victoria and Albert Parks also.

Some of the costs incurred include:

– Security at $119,673.
– $42,287 on fixing damage to Aotea and Horitiu squares, assessments, fencing, signage and clean-up costs.

Apparently, Penny sees this as ‘a victory’ for all the people she claims to represent – you know, ordinary people who pay rates – because the Council ended up dropping court proceedings against OccupyAuckland. Thus, the Council (ie, ordinary people who pay rates) ended up paying those costs, plus nearly $200,000 in legal fees.

Thanks for sticking up for us there, Penny. Please don’t bother next time, though, we can’t afford it.

Do you realise that if John Key accedes to any shares ‘plus’ or ‘veto’ provision for Maori in the sale of Mighty River Power

shares it will be contrary to the Election promise of no more than 10% interest to any one shareholder and therefore

break that promise. And as a tiebreaker that could render the Green/Labour Referendum and your change your power

supplier campaign a total waste of time – blow them right out of the water [whoever owns it], so to speak.

Protest Saturday 8th…. [yawn] September 10.30am [yawn] Line Road, Glen Innes [yawn].

So we now have another gathering of the usual suspects at another place in Auckland to ‘protest’ against something else.

And sure as the sun will set later today, the same old tired faces will be present, holding the same old placards, chanting the same old crap, all diligently reciting the same old trite lines at the usual tempo – accompanied by the same old battered megaphone. That is, assuming that they somehow get more to attend than the 3 dishevelled examples who were huddling against the cold wind blowing along the footpath outside Mercury Energy on GT South Road earlier this week. 😀

And if the ‘protesters’ can persuade one of their union comrades to attend, no doubt the ‘story’ will be beaten up and repeated by the same old breathless ‘media’ kids from the same old hack publications – somehow claiming that this ‘campaign’ echoes the opinions of the community. The reality is, of course, totally different as the community is really applauding the move to demolish the bloody awful, high maintenance 1960’s style flats that are there and replace them with something from the 21st century.

And the net effect of Penny Not-So’s latest ‘protest’ will be the same as all her other ‘protests’… nothing!

Nada. Zero. Zip. Zilch. SFA!

The high nz dollar is starting to bite in the way of job losses in exporting industries.

The govt has been quite happy to let the exporters take the pain so no surprise.

There certainly are some options to reduce the value of the dollar — one of which was recently printed on kiwiblog –ie, to tax interest on savings of foreigners.

Another would be to further reduce government borrowing.

Or, maybe we should intensify farming even further and rely on agriculture and not worry about other exporting industries.

Maori leaders eager to win Chinese investment

A group of Maori business leaders will travel to China next month to talk to Shanghai Pengxin about potential investment opportunities. The group will be led by the Maori Trustee, Jamie Tuuta.

“Too often we have been just an asset holder, very passive, nothing beyond the farm gate,” Mr Tuuta told the Herald. “If we are to create wealth for our people we have got to be participating throughout the value chain.”

“We’ve got to generate cash from the business enterprise on land rather than get capital gain and sell it at future date.”

Good stuff. This is what I think many of us we are looking to Maori to do – stop sitting on their assets and use them to generate wealth for ‘their people’.

But I imagine the Greens will be all over this, telling the Maori business leaders not to do any business with Shanghai Pengxin. Anfter all, we don’t want their money – right? So the Greens will be falling over themselves telling Maori how to run their affairs – right?

From the same article:

Prime Minister John Key opened the conference and emphasised the role of China in the New Zealand economy.

China was New Zealand’s 11th-largest investor with $1.8 billion of investment in 2011, including in forestry, manufacturing and agriculture.

“China is also investing in New Zealand government bonds, contributing to the record low borrowing rates New Zealand currently enjoys.”

Haven’t heard the Greens complain about those invetments so far …

Isn’t that going to just erode the already pitiful savings base in the country and lead to more offshore-sourced private borrowing?

Our best hope (sadly) is that Romney wins and the US’s flirtation with a return to a commodity-base for their dollar gets a bit stronger

Look at the list; Forest and Bird, Green Party, High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, ERMA, and others.
They all work to make the creation of jobs in our country a needlessly expensive minefield.
Wouldn’t it be neat if that money was spent on higher wages instead of rapacious lawyers.
I find it all rather depressing.

What do these ‘senior’ QCs Gray and Miles have to say about the lack of accountability of NZ Judges – given that there is no enforceable ‘Code of Conduct’; no ‘Register of Pecuniary Interests’ and court proceedings are regularly NOT recorded?

How many times has Julian Miles QC appeared in Court when Court proceedings have not been recorded?

I for one do not respect ‘seniority’ alone.

It seems fairly simple – if there’s an arrest warrant, front up. According to one lawyer commenting, most people are aware of warrants and are simply avoiding dealing with them.

vto – I presume the reason is to stop people who are using state welfare to avoid their legal responsibilities.

In other words, if you want to live off the state, abide by state laws.

If the warrant is for something minor then it will be a minor task dealing with it . And most people on benefits should have ample time to deal with it.

So the reason for the policy is that if you receive money or benefits from the state then you must abide by the state’s laws. And if you don’t so abide then that money or those benefits get stopped.

Is that it? Anyone else like to add other reasons?

(edit: and Pete, it is very interesting and disturbing that you have to “presume the reason”, is it not?

Your problem is not that you cannot see any logic. Your problem is that there are no circumstances in which you would be prepared to consider the matter objectively and conced any semblance of merit.

Here is a question for you. A few years back, a Christcurch family received grants from WINZ to fence swimming pools on one of their rental properties. Assume for a moment that these grants were secured by fraudulent representation and they were arrested. Would you, as a taxpayer, consider it acceptable that the state (ie you) should continue to pay them and subsidise their flight? Or do you think that maybe the state (namely you) should say that the benefit cheque can be collected from the court? Why should that taxpayer fork out to the police to chase after them and at the same time pay their travelling costs as they run away.

I wouldn’t call it disturbing but I’d prefer to see more details. Maybe they thought the reasons would be obvious enough.

It’s very easy to avoid getting their benefit cut, comply with the law. Seems fairly straight forward. I don’t know why anyone would think that’s a bad thing.

Can you think of why it wouldn’t be fair?

If you choose to commit a crime against society, how can you then justify that society should still help you?
If you knowingly raise two rude fingers to society and say, in effect, “F*** you”, why should society feel obligated to help you?
If you break the laws of society, should society knowingly and willingly condone you breaking laws by paying you a benefit to live on?
If you don’t play by the rules that you don’t like, why do you think the rest of the laws (the ones you do like) should still apply to you?
Why should we allow criminals to take advantage of us?

If all other people who receive money and benefits from the state, such as students, superannuitants, working for families recipients, health care and education recipients, follow the laws of the land, then they are entitled to those benefits.

To put it simply – if they play by the rules, then we as a society have said “We are willing to help those people who need help”.

If they don’t play by the rules, then the Government (acting on society’s behalf) have said, “We expect you to play by the rules that apply to this society. If you choose not to play by society’s rules, if you consciously turn your back on society, then don’t expect society to help you out.”

I’ve asked Paula but she doesn’t usually reply.

So I’ll guess – the aim is increase compliance with our laws and to stop people from avoiding their arrest warrants. I think there are similar procedures if you try and leave the country.

It’s not a new or radical concept. Some time last century I applied for a firearm licence. The police said they had an outstanding warrant for my arrest, it was for a traffic ticket several years earlier when I was living at the other end of the country. It took five minutes to sort it out and I then got my firearm licence.

That’s great that you agree that any superannuitants, students, road users, WFF, health care and education recipients who have outstanding arrest warrants (and lets throw the drug thing in there too for the same reasons) lose their super, their education, their student loans and benefits, their road use, the working for families.

I don’t see why WFF shouldn’t apply, although it’s a credit, not a benefit.

Super could apply as well but I suspect very few will be affected, by far the majority of outstanding warrants will be for young people, they do much more crime and are more transient. (as per bhudson)

bhudson, you know in this world the trick is not to have the right answers as they can always be found – the trick is to have the right questions. Try this one … how many outstanding arrest warrants are there in NZ? And this one … how many New Zealanders receive money or other benefit from the state? Those two will lead you in the right direction if this is the way people want to play it between state and person.

Liquor trade law enforcement officers have been told to show zero tolerance for bad behaviour when the Alcohol Reform Bill’s new rules are in place.

Justice Minister Judith Collins delivered her “get tough” message to licensing inspectors at their annual conference in Wellington on Thursday.

The timing of the annual conference was probably deliberate to distract from (what’s the current thing National want to avoid being highlighted?)

Come on everyone – graham, Pete, bhudson, nonpartisan, elaycee, I toned down the rhetoric and engaged with you over a particular point. Do you agree with the particular point or not? If you do then please have a think about the motivations of this government in not being consistent in this policy. If you don’t then please explain why not?

I don’t know where you get the ‘bigoted reaction’ from.

National were more explicit in their election material, titled “No dole for people on the run from Police”. A reason given was:

This collaborative approach between Police and Work and Income will free up significant Police time and resources.

Perhaps they are targetting the biggest problem area, or perhaps they were pandering to public sentiment (being an election publication I expect they had some thoughts of getting votes). Possibly a bit of both.

1) Stop offending as this is a major cause of arrest warrants being issued OR

2) Get off their bludging arses & get a job. This has a twofold benefit as no longer do we have to subsidise the crime but they won’t have the time to do it in the first place.

Any other social problems you’d like me to sort out while I’m having a coffee break?

In response to Maori being treasures and having an affinity to mother earth.. 8 years ago 4 white males were camping on private land next to a beach. They had permission from the farmer on the understanding that they would not leave any rubbish. Around 10 Maori youths and a couple in their late 20s .. Male and female.. turned up and demanded cash for them camping there. When this was rejected veiled threats were made and as the area was isolated a couple of cases of beer were made as payment. The Maori lectured the campers about them being squatters and not having a feel for the land. Next morning the campers discovered that where the Maori had been “camping” over night there were empty beer cans, broken bottles, human crap and general food and rubbish that attracted flies.

Makes it rather difficult to take notice of our “landlords”.

Sorry dear but it’s true account of what took place. I did not mention what was stolen from an unlocked van at the time. Anyhow during the summer similar incidents are well documented in the media. Some of those old Maori legends seemed to indicate that all was not peace & love in Ancient Aotearoa either. After all they had depicted themselves as “great warriors” in their oral histories. If the warriors were warring then my guess it would have to be with other Maori in the absence of anyone else.

Unless it was those bastard weka after all! 🙂
