Water Meters
Stuff reports:
Many councils are resisting Government pressure to introduce water meters because they know voters don’t like the idea, a new study says.
Wellington and Lower Hutt city councils were identified as the worst for considering alternative funding tools for providing drinking water to their residents.
Local Government New Zealand says it “definitely does not support the call for universal water meters”, and Napier City Council regards proposed reforms as a move to take control of water away from elected representatives.
I am a big fan of water meters. Partly because it is user pays, which is fair. Why should the grandmother who uses very little water pay the same as the family of four with swimming pool for their water?
But they are also environmentally sound, as they promote water conservation. A win-win.
