The Internet was built on links, but that may not be the case for much longer if laws continue to punish the mere act of linking.

The courts are now having to deal with the issue of linking to content that may be illegal. Copyright law has generally been applied to those who host the content themselves. Now the law is being applied to sites that host zero content, but rather link to content on other Web sites. That’s where the case of Anton Vickerman comes in.

And of course Dotcom with the ultimate target being Google and other search engines.

In parliament yesterday Lockwood Smith called the behaviour “absolutely disgraceful” and said:

Members of the public watching this will email me this afternoon about how disgusted they are by some of the behaviour – it’s happened too often this week.

I think the public need to much more actively tell their Speaker and their MPs that they expect a much better standard of parliamentary behaviour.

Demand it. Addressing disgraceful parliamentary behaviour.

Some really interesting fun this morning by Karl du-Fresne and CoNZervative beating up some old Maori gods (“Jesus eats Taniwha) in the light of various official hearings and their PC-application which it at variance with history. No, Maori don’t still wear grass skirts.
Ele Ludemann at Homepaddock rightly queries why these ‘old gods’ don’t care about people, just asset sales.

MT-Tinman – it has to be exposed and confronted if we want it changed. This is mostly a problem with Labour and National, Greens are against poor parliamentary behaviour and small parties don’t have much influence.

Large party leadership is required to make our house of representatives respectable. And that will make it more effective.

This caught my eye in the online Herald:

Ms Bennett said the Government was focusing on addressing poverty rather than measuring it, and so was putting its efforts into other areas.

But hang on a minute, Paula! In his desperation to install (non)National Standards, your boss said quite clearly that in his view, if you can’t measure it, you can’t fix it. So why the different stance on this issue?

Of course, where Key was wrong in earlier in times is that there is plenty of measurement already available and a plethora of expert opinion on how to fix the problem. Instead, we get a half-baked meaningless data set and, what’s worse, the earlier lie of protecting the information and not allowing league tables to be built from it is now exposed.

On poverty, the failure of both our main parties to address this poisonous wart on New Zealand’s nose is disgraceful and emblematic of political cynicism at its worst. We need an official measurement of poverty – even the US has that – and a commitment to address it’s root causes as well as immediate relief by way of transfers.

Talking about Child Poverty

“Child Poverty” has nothing to do with “poverty”.
Measuring ‘child poverty’ using the median income doesn’t tell anything about poverty.
It measures income distribution.
There is no ‘child poverty’ in New Zealand.
For ‘child poverty, visit India or most countries in Africa.

People getting richer in the top half means the median will go up.
'Poor' people won't be getting less than they got before, just less than the rest.

We need an official measurement of poverty – even the US has that – and a commitment to address it’s root causes as well as immediate relief by way of transfers.

Governments have been committed to addressing it’s many complex root causes for yonks.

There is not such thing as ‘immediate relief’. Any ‘transfers’ – piling more taxpayer money at a mass of people in varied situations – might help a few in the short term but it will do the opposite of addressing root causes.

Relatively, that’s correct.

Income disparities, health disparities, education dispartities, housing disparities, thse are all problems here that we need to try and improve on.

But the Greens in particular and also Labour have once again grossly over-exaggerated a problem we do have to try and force by guilt something that is barely disguised socialism.

Sadly, NZ is stuffed to the gills with well meaning people who don’t think that, and it seems to be a long-standing tradition born of cultural experience. It’s been argued that it has something to do with a combination of traditional Pasifika tribal politics and the similar traits of Irish immigrants, who argued that if government was not doing something when there were problems, then there was no point in having government. That last seems to have shown up in the Irish immigrant communities of the US as well, and has been linked to the Irish potato famine. All debatable of course.

The point is that if a government is not seen to be “doing something” – constantly – the attitude of Kiwi’s is that it should be, to justify the cost of politicians aside from anything else.

Occasionally I harbour a dreamy notion in which Parliament goes on holiday for six months – just to see what would happen to the rest of the country as a test. My bet is that we would all do fine.

South African police re enacted a famous 1879 action
the defence of Rorkes Drift yesterday. Miners armed with machetes played the Zulu warriors while the police acted the parts of the 24 th Regiment of Foot.
The re enactment was made all the more realistic by the use of live ammunition.

Well, I just found out the dirty secret on water meters. The invoices for water it self isn’t so bad in Oz. What is bad is the administrations costs tacked on. Thousands.

Don’t forget the CO2 tax is still coming. People with Mortgages and living barely within their means are going to be completely disenfranchised. Homelessness will abound under mainstream govts.

At least some councils are resisting govt pressure to conform against public opposition.

Seriously now, I really dont think it was always thus. Twenty five years ago I was a Labour activist, albeit in a small provincial city rather than a large one. I really dont remember anyone on the New Plymouth electorate committee who you could call a “nasty bastard”…maybe I just didnt notice because I was still young and idealistic. The nasty politics in those days was the Nats’ domain..remember Muldoon saying to Kirk “Get well and get out, a pensioner needs your bed” about a week before Kirks’ death? And the nasty destructive stuff in the House seems to be the Nats…or is time blurring my memory?

See what happens when I leave, the Standard goes downhill (I didn’t think that was possible until I’ve seen them fight amongst themselves so much now).

The trouble is they had entrenched a culture of nastiness, (now I’m not there to soak some of it up) they do the same amongst themselves. And wonder why they’re not taken seriously. The Standard labours lower.

I think both National and Labour are responsible for most of the poor behaviour in parliament.

DG – and ideas on how best to address this? Via the speaker and whips? Via the Standing Orders committee (Mallard is on it FFS)? Party leaders are too hard to get at.

I agree David – I was once a staunch Labour supporter, being the son of a West Coast coal miner, but back then my friends (who were also Labour supporters) and I always had an ethic to work – and never wanted to be on the dole, regardless of the type of work, having a job was preferable to being on the dole. Labour was seen as the working mans party. This is not the case now; they have allowed the welfare system to create a generational wasteland of unemployable, uneducated class of people. Their cost on our society is immense. Throwing more money at the problem people rather than solutions will escalate this situation.

The hatred and bile from the type of people from at the Standard is not the Labour I once proudly supported – albeit many years ago.

Wayne91 – it’s deteriorated since the last election. I think that as more reasonable Labourites have lost interest the bent and bitter activists have nothing to moderate them – in fact they run The Standard and openly promoted attack politics, some of it very personal and nasty.

It’s just that now they have turned on each other while the spotlight is on them, and no one is banning one side so it’s all on.

While the teachers and the unionists have always been there, I seem to recall several guys I worked with on various sites who were proud Labour Party members… and unless labourers welders and fitters have changed greatly in 30 years I can’t see too many of them supporting the party that is far more interested in the needs of the “rainbow community” than them.

Who can think of ANY labour MP since Mike Moore who had ever actually been “a worker”? I used to have the funniest sport with the fools when they tried to play at being “workers” in the House….not one of them as far as I know had ever picked up a socket set or a hammer in anger…

Still, if he really isn’t using a sextant either, I wouldn’t like to do that and if he does it, really does do it without help from anything or any chase boat, it’s an amazing achievement even today and they deserve every credit.

On the Liarbore nasties and their origin, my theory is the profound idiots who engage in it which includes most of Liarbore’s supporters younger than say 45, were profoundly affected by what they perceived as the Rogernomics revolution, which they perceived introduced a hitherto unknown demarcation across our previously relatively egalitarian society. Its bollocks of course, but this is what I think has happened. The irony is, that this attitude has been seeded and promoted entirely by Liarbore for their own purposes, and it’s interesting to observe that in the race sector you also have a bunch of Maori around about the same age group who really do think Maori rightfully own the entire country, period. This can’t be accidental, or if it is, it’s the biggest sociological coincidence in the history of humankind.

If you missed it, great guest post by Matt and Madeline Flannagan on Whale’s blog, re: refuting same-sex marriage. They go into the current act and look at the Bill etc.

Some highlights –

According to the General policy statement of the Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill (“the Bill”), the justification for affirming same-sex marriage as a human right is the notion of equality and non-discrimination. The General policy statement provides: “This Bill amends the Marriage Act 1955 (the principal Act) to ensure that its provisions are not applied in a discriminatory manner”; it goes on to state, “Marriage, as a social institution, is a fundamental human right and limiting that human right to 1 group in society only does not allow for equality.”

The problem is that the Bill itself goes on to apply the provisions in an unequal and discriminatory manner.

Schedule 2 of the Bill provides a list of prohibited degrees of marriage; fifteen different classes of people are explicitly excluded from being able to marry. Further, the General policy statement and sections 4 and 5 of the Bill explicitly exclude unions where there are more than two people.

The Bill does this regardless of whether such unions are consensual, and the parties in question love and are committed to each other. It does this despite Sections 4 and 5 each repeating the idea that marriage should have no regard for “sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity.”

In doing this the Bill itself blatantly and explicitly applies the law in a discriminatory manner, it limits “the human right to marry” to only 2 classes of people in society, while excluding many more.

If equality were a valid basis for rejecting the Marriage Act as it stands then it is an equally valid basis for rejecting the Bill. Proponents of the Bill cannot have it both ways; the appeal to equality either refutes both or neither.

The drafters of the Bill clearly recognise that it is not unjust to legislate Marriage in a discriminatory manner. They make it clear, by the inclusion of Schedule 2, that they do not really believe that all classes of people should be allowed to marry if they want to; further they make it clear and that sexual orientation is a legitimate ground for marriage discrimination.

Slogans that people have a right to marry whomever they love are just that, slogans. People do not have a right to marry whomever they love. If someone loved their sister or brother, or mother, or loved their two best friends, they do not, in virtue of that fact, have a right to have the state solemnise or recognise these relationships as marriage. Nor does the Bill enable people to marry whomever they love.

It is true that legislators are unlikely, in the present climate, to recognise such unions and do not advocate doing so – Schedule 2 being Exhibit A of the case in point. This, however, is the point, their actions in doing so show that their stance is irrational. When the topic is not same-sex marriage they recognise that these arguments do not work, and they do not advocate acting in accord with them. If they are to rationally advocate for same-sex marriage proponents need to offer different arguments – ones that are sound!

Many people will undoubtedly respond with outrage and will apply derogatory labels to us over this blog post. They re-join that sex with member of the same-sex is totally different to incest or polyandry or polygamy; they will point to features of these practises which mean there is good reason to not recognise them in law.

None of these responses will be adequate. Expressing outrage is not an argument, it is simply an expression of dislike for another’s position; casting labels is not an adequate response either, doing so commits the ad hominem fallacy. The issue is not whether you like what we say but whether our arguments are sound.

Pointing to differences between incestuous and same-sex unions also misses the point. We never said that homosexual conduct was like incest in all respects. We pointed out that the premises of the arguments in question commit one to drawing conclusions about incest; this is not the same thing.

Finally, pointing out that there are good reasons for not recognising incestuous, polyandrous or polygamous unions, actually proves, rather than rebuts, our argument. Those who make this point illustrate that one can legitimately discriminate against sexual practises and sexual orientation. They show that one can discriminate against people on the basis of how many partner’s they have and on the basis of whether the partners are of the same kin as them – same-sex relationships between relatives cannot be state sanctioned. They hold this position despite the fact that such unions may be loving, consensual and between adults.

Sadly I think its a lost cause by now. People have decided.

You have a referendum and I think it would be around 70-30 in favour. The proponents’ shallow emotive arguments have lots of power, if no substance. It’s a shame the majority of the urban liberal brigade (as loosely defined by me, since it includes people on both sides like DPF, Whale and lefties and gay activists) who comprise a significant proportion of that 70, firmly hallucinate its about ‘human wights’ when logically, it’s not and that’s quite elementary to illustrate.

Just because many gays say it’s about human wights, doesn’t make it so, and many other arguments such as your link put forward. What does one have to say to stem that tide?

But no matter. This is but one more ~~foolish~~ Satanically inspired move on the battlefront those of us who see, must accept, in the knowledge all is perfect, all is good.

Street and he happened to notice a female member of his
congregation sitting in the town bar, drinking beer.

The reverend thought this was sinful and not something a
member of his congregation should do, so he walked through
the open door of the bar and sat down next to the woman.

“Mrs. Fitzgerald,” the reverend said sternly. “This is no
place for a member of my congregation. Why don’t you let me
take you home?” “Shure,” she said with a slur, obviously
very drunk.

When Mrs. Fitzgerald stood up from the bar, she began to
weave back and forth. The reverend realized that she had had
too much to drink and he grabbed hold of her arms to steady
her. When he did, they both lost their balance and tumbled
to the floor.

After rolling around for a few seconds, the reverend wound
up lying on top of Mrs. Fitzgerald, her skirt hiked up to
her waist. The bartender looked over the bar and said,
“Here, here, buddy, we won’t have any of that carrying on
in this bar.”

The reverend looked up at the bartender and said, “But you
don’t understand, I’m Pastor Fuzz.” The bartender nodded.

“Well if you’re in that far you may as well finish.”

A man was riding a bus, minding his own business, when the gorgeous woman next to him started

to breastfeed her baby.

The baby wouldn’t take it, so she said,

“Come on,
eat it all up or … I’ll have

to give it to this nice man here.”

Five minutes later, the baby was still not feeding,
so she said,

“Come on, honey.

Take it or I’ll give it to this nice
man here.”

A few minutes later, the anxious man

blurted out,

“Come on, kid.

Make up your mind!
I was supposed to get off four stops ago!”

INNER PEACE.

I am passing this on to you because it definitely worked for me today, and we all could probably use more calm in our lives.

Some doctor on TV this morning said the way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started.

So I looked around my house to see things I’d started and hadn’t finished – I have managed to finish off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of Chardonnay, …a bodle of Baileys, a butle of wum, a pockage of Prungles, tha mainder of bot Prozic and Valiuminun scriptins, the res of the chesescke an a box a chocletz.

Yu haf no idr how bludy fablus I feel rite now. Plaese sned dhis orn to dem yu fee ar in ned ov iennr pisss. An telum,u blody luvum.!!

God is always a goody

Here is a hymn that I’ll never forget.

Yes God is Good

This hymn was a regular hymn in our family morning pray (My late father was the church minister of the Tongan Methodist church in our village). I used to be woken up at 5am in the morning, every wednesday and friday of the week, because there used to be a church service from 6am to 6-45am on those 2 mornings. My dad preferred the Yes God is Good for our family morning prayer before every one in the family have to go to the 6am service in those 2 mornings. When I was a youngstar I complained that we should have sang other hymns instead of Yes God is Good on every Wednesday & Friday morning. This is the reason this hymn is stuck with me and I’ll never forget it.

It’s a beautiful hymn when it is supported by instruments. I have played the hymn in the village brass band on some Sundays back then.

I’m now atheist (since I started studying Physics at University – physical laws contradict biblical stories), but I never forget my christian upbringing. I don’t bag christian politicians for their beliefs like some right-wingers on this blog, however I will oppose when they bring their faith into politics, like Colin Craig. It doesn’t mean that I won’t vote for him, I’ll do it simply to keep the left out of office.

Anyway, I’m already pissed and there’s a party on my street about a 150 meters from my place. I don’t know the people there, but I usually wave my hand to them when I walked past their place and they waved back to me. So, I’m gonna go and gate crash it. On my way back from the bottom store at about 7pm, I saw lots of chicks in there already, but not that many guys. I’m gonna go and chat them up.
