People are already leaving in droves. And they expect to attract people back or keep them there with a bunch of buildings that don’t have windows???

Speaking as a Christchurch resident I like the idea but quail at the cost. What is pictured looks like a nice central city with very pleasant opportunities for living around the parks a short walk from the centre.

Assuming it includes encouraging living in the central block it could become a vibrant centre.

But those proposed facilities are never going to pay for themselves (anyone who suggests they’ll attract foreign visitors on their own is fooling themselves) and I doubt insurance from what they replace will cover the greater part of their cost, and city centres at a time of being surrounded by expansive malls are no longer natural attractions.

On balance I’d vote for rather than against it, even though I think it looks like it’ll take twenty years to mature, and I’d rather while the land obviously be bought promptly that the facilities not be rushed at any unneccesary damaging expense.

Before those quakes happened having an expensive concentration of public facilities in the city centre would have been problematic and while redesigning the central city to better exploit the idea looks nice it doesn’t suddenly make it a magically sensible way to spend money afterwards.

Cultural Centre, Stadium, performing arts centre, convention centre. I’m a bit worried about all of these, they either attract very few people of only attract them for short periods a few times per year. The Stadium area is only going to be busy for perhaps 30-60 afternoons or evenings each year.

To have a decent city heart you need to have lots of people daytime and evenings, 7 days per week. Imagine you need to support some cafes that open 8am-10pm, 7 days per week.

They are glossing a little over the offices and shops but hopefully these will be of significant density (and maybe some apartments) plus the amount of green will be reduce a bit so that it’ll reach critical mass. Otherwise they just just not bother and just spread the whole city out.

Best idea for Christchurch that anyone’s come up with. Get onto CERA ASAP will you before they spend the $10b or whateverthefuckitis.

After all, Matamata now makes its money from being the Hobbit town.

I am concerned that where the dosh comes from has not been answered. I suspect the final answer from Central Government will be to sell all the productive assets currently held by the CCC

I’m just wondering myself how many buildings they’re going to bowl over to create these big parks? It’s a bit off to knock down buildings that have survived so much, given how little of the former city is left.

It’s certainly an interesting proposal for all that.

+1 on Fentex’s comments.

Hopefully the most important and useful sites will be funded and built first. To me that would be the justice/emergency services precinct, bus exchange, The Frame (the CBD needs to be a nice place to visit, or retail won’t prosper), and possibly the library and convention center. The extravagant extras (cultural center, performings arts center, sports center) should be last in line for money.

Having read a bit of media on this, it appears the central government is proposing to put taxpayers money at risk on a lot of these non-essential projects. When the government came out to say they were supporting Christchurch last year, I don’t think anyone had a covered stadium, or a massive buy up of private property in mind. This is disgusting. And DPF the “classical liberal” cheers it on.

The problem is what business there is to do in Christchurch doesn’t need the CBD anymore. They have moved elsewhere.

To recreate the CBD, and attract businesses back in, will need incentives/ enticements. Hotel chains may well be demanding a convention center for instance. Ideally the whole thing would be funded by business, but would it take off or just subsist in an emaciated state for decades with no external drive/push? Can a plan and targeted investment upfront improve things? Clearly the government believes so.

There is also politics to think of. The do-nothing option is not really an option is it? “Government abandons Christchurch” the press would scream, and Labour would capitalise easily on the discontent and romp into power in 2014.

Watching that video, one thing that struck me was in some areas the new buildings “towering” over the streets on each side. Additional effects include less natural sunlight (like in winter) and places where one can’t avoid falling objects in another large quake etc.

So why not get rid of some roads i.e. double the width of some existing ones, for safety (eg 4 or 6 lanes, proper bus lanes, proper cycle lanes etc, lanes or space for parking or drop offs etc, additional lanes at intersections, have extra wide pedestrian footpaths (and cafe seating etc), wide enough to have huge parades even)?

thanks I appreciate my somewhat off the wall comments occasionally getting traction.

My other observation is why the hell are our Glorious Leaders not believing their own climate change and sea level rise propaganda?

Surely it is insane (according to “them”) to rebuild a city on land that will be inundated in a few decades
