Guess what; Chinese immigrants can’t just fly their parents in at age 65 at get them on superannuation.

Yeah, we know that Winston said last week that that’s EXACTLY what the Chinese could do and were doing, but it seems that Winston and the actual truth are strangers to one another. John Armstrong his fisked him good and proper, and all power to him; it’s about time that Peters’ xenophobic bullshit was exposed.

Keeping Stock is being dishonest. That’s not at all what Winston said, even the article you quoted said he was “technically correct” – i.e. he was 100% correct – yet more dishonesty. The fact is in NZ the only requirement for receiving National Superannuation on the same basis as a NZ citizen who lived, worked and paid taxes here 65 years, is being resident for a total of 10 years with 5 of those years after 50 years old – this being is the most liberal and generous entry criteria of any country in the world to the most generous non-contributory old age pension benefit scheme in the world. The criteria should damn well be reviewed after 36 years without change and only someone without NZ best interest at heart or a National Party shill would deny this.

And no I don’t support NZ First or Winston Peters – I think he’s corrupt lying venal scum – but on this he’s entirely right and it should be debated – not deflected to cover a supremely stupid pledge made by the current incumbent of the office of PM.

Keeping Stock… Another common loop hole is they sponsor their parents to come here. Suddenly, they can no longer to afford to ‘honour’ their 2 year sponsorship, so the parents can either test eligibility for emergency benefit or sickness benefit under hardship grounds. And trust me, they do.

Of course there are genuine cases. There always are. However the system is open to abuse and abused it gets.

I’m waiting for Winston to click onto young mail order brides to pensioners for can collect the pension as a spouse and spend 6 months out of the country.

And no, I’m no fan of Winston either. However just because I think the man is a fool does not make everything he says, foolish.

It is technically correct in referring, if only obliquely, to the requirement that to be eligible for superannuation, immigrants must have lived in NZ for at least 10 years, five of those since turning 50.

Peters’ statement was instead designed to leave the impression that the elderly parents of immigrants can simply swan around waiting for the day they turn 65 and the money rolls in.

The reality is that there is no plonking mum and dad on the next flight out of Beijing once one of them turns 65.

That doesn’t sound 100% to me, especially in the honesty department. Armstrong described it:
“The speech was not so much a dog whistle as a wolf howl for attention.”

A carefully crafted speech, technically, but deliberately dishonest in appearance.

Joseph Carpenter – Inventory2 is many things to many people but dishonest is not one of them.

He may be mistaken, or even badly informed, but my instincts and his record suggest he has never been a dishonest blogger.

That’s why he remains on the true periphery of the ‘sphere. IMO It’s a badge of honour – he’s a ‘real’ blogger – not in the pay of anyone or part of anyone’s spin department, so show a bit of respect you naughty man.

But what really annoyed me was the bit that the papers DIDN’T report (apologies in advance to DPF for rehashing one of my posts); check this out:

New Zealand First held its post-election conference at the weekend; and as 3 News reports, some things never change:

Speaking to the party’s annual convention in Palmerston North today, Mr Peters praised voters who sent his party back to parliament with eight MPs in last year’s election, following three years on the sidelines after a humiliating defeat in 2008 – a period in which, he says, the Labour-led opposition let National “get away with murder”.
“The first thing we had to do was to put some steel into the heart of the opposition, and the psychological impact of our return cannot be underestimated,” Mr Peters said.
He attacked the Government’s asset sales plans and sale of the Crafar family farms to a Chinese buyer, promising strict new restrictions on foreign land ownership and changes to immigrants’ entitlements if his party joins the next Government.
“A young couple from China … can bring in four elderly parents who don’t have to work here in the 10 years before they turn 65, yet they will all receive full New Zealand super,” Mr Peters said.

It’s interesting though the words that 3News deleted; watch the video on the One News website, and see and hear what Peters actually said where 3News has added the dots (our emphasis added):

“A young couple from China – this is not an attack on any race but it’s a fact – A young couple from China, where there is a limit on family size, can bring in four elderly parents who don’t have to work here in the 10 years before they turn 65, yet they will all receive full New Zealand super,”

We guess that we should cease to be surprised when Winston Peters chooses China for his example. After all, he’s already attacked the sale of the former Crafar farms to a Chinese consortium, and pitching his comments at a hypothetical Chinese target is the kind of stuff that Winston’s followers love and have come to expect. That it is blatant, obvious xenophobia simply underlines our distaste for Winston Peters.

I won’t link-whore again on this post, but if anyone wants to read the whole thing, it’s called Of leopards, spots and Winston Peters, and I’m sure it’s easily found.

DPF’s Herald column on manipulation of referendum timing has been picked up by The Standard.

Now, Farrar thinks that National will get away with this. Apparently, people won’t mind it if their government cynically tries to render their referendum pointless or cynically tries to minimise the turn-out. And, if they do, they will forget all about it by the 2014 election.

It’s not only National who may cynically use the (possible) referendum for their own political advantage. Greens and Labour are putting quite a bit of time and resources (taxpayer funded) into the petition, hoping for a referendum that they know can and will betoo late and ignored, like most CIR.

I detailed this yesterday: Green abuse of CIR could be more insidious.

I also don’t agree with cynical manipulation of timing of referenda, as suggested by Farrar.

This highlights again that what was purported to be Citizen’s Initiated Referenda was designed by cynical politicians to be toothless, and has been further abused by party manipulation and hijacking.

We (citizens) need more than ever to take ownership of how to harness the Citizen Voice, and design our own system of telling politicians what we think. It needs to be controlled by citizens, and ringfenced from parties. It needs to be far more responsive (I suggest a 2-3 month cycle). And it needs to be far more flexible – limiting to a single (often loaded) question can make a referendum a year or more later a farce.

CIR should be improved as a higher level of response, but we need better, faster, and not able to be abused by parties.

You should make that decision based on an analysis of the institution kk, not upon the characteristics of any particular holder or potential holder of the office. The fact that most republicans have already made that fundamental error shows how profoundly moronic the whole movement actually is.

Anyway, Charles will never be king, why do you think Liz has clung on so very long? She knows the score. If Charles ever got it she knows the monarchy’s toast. If William gets it, it’s only a 90% probability that the monarchy’s toast. (Actually the monarchy never will be toast since that’s where the anti-christ is going to come from and guess what, she’s not William, but that’s another story.)

It looks at least as though left and right being on the same team the only player checking claims about immigration is NZ Firsts.

New Zealand now boasts one of the highest rates of home unaffordability in the world as a result of prices rising far faster than incomes, and the government’s Savings Working Group blames that squarely on the policies of successive governments.
Although “the favourable tax treatment of property investment” accounted for about 50% of house price increases between 2001 and 2007, the working group said, there was also strong evidence that rapid swings in immigration brought about price-rise “shocks”.
There was a sharp spike in immigration in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and, said working group committee member Dr Andrew Coleman, it appeared that property prices did not fall anywhere near as greatly when immigration fell again.
The report added that there was little evidence that immigration boosted local incomes. In fact, the need to build roads and schools meant that net migration contributed to the national deficit. ”

Kevin Hague’s actions on the ACC are extremely valid, in my view. Who the fuck does Smith and Collins think they are, that they feel able to deny those of us who have paid into this scheme all of our working lives, access to it if and when we need it? The management of ACC should be taken out the back and shot, the fucking traitors, for implementing that bonus scheme, which according to the departing CEO, came in around 3.5 years ago, just when Smith was starting his outrageous campaign to balance the ACC’s books by denying rightful claimants. (I don’t have a problem with balancing the books, I do have a problem in the way they have decided to go about it.) I think those two MPs actually forget who the fuck they work for and so do the ACC management.

Just in case anyone wonders, I have never made an ACC claim in my life and I do not have one underway and I am not planning to make one, either. I just think like I said, I’ve paid into it all my working life so IF I do have an accident I want my 80% of my last two years average salary for as long as I fucking need it and I don’t give a fuck if that makes the general scheme more expensive. When you have an institution like ACC, it has a DUTY to be just and righteous to its shareholders – us, which overrides every fucking thing, including the desires of Treasury, Cabinet, or any other set of arseholes who dare to imagine they can tell the people who have built the fucking thing to go to hell. Fuck you, you bastards. Who the fuck do you think you are.

What does everyone think about the instruction to police to cut the number of arrests they make by 13%?

I think it may have the effect of people they can get away with stuff so overall behaviour worsens – see Queen Street drinking – when the liquor ban was enforced with arrests there were hardly any issues – police have moved to ‘warnings’ where the consequences are just having to pour your beer out – mayhem ensues!

I read an artical in Australia that said rather bluntly about the demand for ‘work ready’ immigrants –

” If on the job training, working conditions, management practices and ‘experianced’ co-workers are so wonderful – then why are Australia’s ‘trained but unemployed’ being overlooked for immigrants that are just as inexperianced, or, due to language and cultural reasons, needing ‘on the job’ support and training that we are told, is too much of a cost on resources to employ Australia’s unemployed ? Professional employees are not what we are talking about, retail, hospitality and other services though, are.”

Video and audiotapes have been released of Sanford, Florida, police officers interrogating George Zimmerman about his fatal shooting of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin. The videos include Zimmerman reenacting the killing for officers at the murder scene one day after the slaying. In a video of a separate interrogation, Zimmerman makes two astounding claims: that Trayvon Martin, upon seeing that Zimmerman had a gun, did not retreat, but instead went ahead and said to Zimmerman, “You’re going to die.” Zimmerman also claims that after he shot Martin at close range, Martin looked up at him and said, “You got me.”

George Zimmerman: “When I shifted, my jacket came up and my shirt came up and exposed my firearm. And that’s when he said — he like sat up and looked and said, ’You’re going to die tonight, [expletive].’ And I felt him take one hand off my mouth and slide it down my chest. And I just pinched his arm, and I grabbed my gun, and I aimed it at him and fired one shot. He kind of sat back and said, ‘You got me,’ or ‘You got me,’ ‘You got it,’ something like that.”

Zimmerman was recently jailed for lying about his finances during his bond hearing. Trayvon Martin’s family has yet to respond directly to the new Zimmerman tapes. On Thursday, Martin’s parents were featured guests at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention in New Orleans. Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, talked about losing her son.

Sybrina Fulton: “This was our life. You know, this was my son. This was just not a news story and tomorrow it’s gone. I have to live with this the rest of my life.”

As I said above Scott people who analyse the monarchy based on who is in office miss the entire point of everything. From the way republicans comment in public and on blogs, it would seem however this is in fact how many republicans draw their conclusion.

If I was ever inclined to be a republican the very fact the movement is populated with such profound hillbillies would be enough to make me not want to be one, ever. I ventured over to FrogBlog. The blog just keeps getting better and better, and by better I, of course, mean funnier.

I’m glad they have chosen to bring some light relief to the Kiwi blogosphere. There is a silver haired gentleman taking some enviro-talkfest In Brazil very seriously indeed, although I might question if he’s taking the central issue seriously enough as he appears to have chosen to fly there in a giant, gas guzzling plane. I chuckled.

Auckland’s once-loved “NZ Herald” draws criticism these days for its journalistic standards. But one regular contributor never seems to attract the kind of questioning that I think he deserves – the cartoonist Emmerson. Many of his political contributions are rather weak, and often lacking in genuine humour. I’m well aware from the appreciation that he receives in some quarters that my view is not held universally, but I consider that the Herald’s readers (again!) deserve better.

Today’s effort is fairly representative of the problems that I have with Emmerson: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/news-cartoons/news/article.cfm?c_id=500814&objectid=10814943 . The guy can illustrate well enough, but his situations and textual comments are strained to the paint of being almost humourless:
– two sketches (relating to Govt Ministers) are embarrassingly stretched, and lack the necessary killer punch politically;
– one sketch is about an obtuse issue affecting Australian newspapers. (Is Emmerson an Australian, does anyone know? Over time a number of his sketches appear to be a bit Aussie-centric);
– one sketch seems contrived merely to drag in the All Blacks on test match day; again it’s forced “humour” rather than spontaneous.

It would be great if the Herald could return to its earlier tradition of cartoonists with a feel for the New Zealand psyche.

But it should be OK. After all, Hulun told us ages ago that we live in a benign strategic environment didn’t she? And you believe Hulun, don’t you, mm? And look at how correct she was. And look at how many people actually believed her at the time. And look at how few didn’t believe her. And look at who was right, based on actual history and facts. Congratulations, laj. You have manged to adeptly hit the nail right on the side with your lack of reasoning, as I shall now proceed to point out.

Your original statement was “more peaceful natives…”, based on a story which – you may possibly have noticed – didn’t actually mention what race the driver was. You assumed the driver was Maori, and I simply asked you on what you based that assumption, curious as to whether it might have been some inside knowledge, a mysterious sixth sense, or just out and out racism. As you offered no evidence to the contrary, I’m still picking the third option.

Funny thing is, most people with an IQ above that of a pot plant prefer to wait until the news report comes out before they start picking assumptions out of their butts. And again, these non-vegetative people who have descended the evolutionary scale sufficiently that their knuckles aren’t hairy also know enough to not to judge half a million people or so on the actions of one dork.

But, y’know, congratulations on your racist prediction being right. I’m impressed. No really, that has to be right up there with remembering to zip your trousers after you leave the toilet. Well done, you must be so proud.

Can’t read your link there, Griff. But for starters, what part of Mangere are you talking about? Mangere Bridge? Mangere Central? Mangere East? I grew up in Mangere Bridge, and I’m as white as they come. So were my neighbours and most of my friends. Even now, you go to Kiwi Esplanade or some of the side roads off there, I don’t think you’ll see many brown faces.

None of which really matters. What matters is the answer to your question is yes. It is racist to just assume that a criminal from Mangere is Maori or Polynesian.
