Auckland’s mayor is urging Sky City to take more action on problem gambling on the back of figures that show a tripling of problem gamblers identified there in the past three years.
Mayor Len Brown is particularly disappointed because the figures from the Gambling Commission show that in the same period exclusions from the casino increased by only a quarter.
The Mayor is also concerned by reports that Sky City’s Host Responsibility programme has never been reviewed despite its license requiring that to happen every two years.
“They have to do better if they want to win the support of Aucklanders for the international class convention centre being proposed by the government and Sky City.”

And how vitriolic would Mayor Brown have been if Sky City hadn’t given him $15,000
That’s the problem with donations.

Late last night on the “Europe” thread ‘Mr Nui’ made this well thought out comment:

……..”So, lets put the drug addled fuckwits wetdream of a 75% tax rate to work in NZ and see what haapens;

Based on 2008 figures, there were 13,130 people earning more than 250k p.a. So, I’m going to add 10% to that number and say we now have 14443 people earning more than 250k.

Assuming that 10% (probably high) of those people earn >1million, with an average earn of 2 million, which again will be high, we have a total of 2.88 billion to tax. Of that 2.88B, the government is already taking 952 million off these people through tax now, leaving only 1.93B to tax. The marginal tax rate already incurred on this income is >32.9%, so we’ll call it 33% for simplicity. The gummint will then apply the drug addled fuckwits wetdream extra 42% tax on this 1.93B of income and only get back 813 million. That’s before everybody starts leaving the country in droves and implementing tax minimisation strategies.

So based on my very generous assumptions, the drug addled fuckwits wetdream tax will cover just over 3 weeks of current gummint borrowings. Great solution and great way to fuck the economy.”…….

These thugs should be charged with manslaughter. Hermann Curry would still be alive today if these youths had not robbed him.

The asset sales petition appears to me to be a balls-up.

The Clerk of the House has agreed with the wording – Do you support the Government selling up to 49 per cent of Meridian Energy, Mighty River Power, Genesis Power, Solid Energy and Air New Zealand?

Isn’t this bottom about face? To sign the petition don’t you need to agree with the question? Or can you sign a peition in the negative?

Same old story. Accountants and lawyers will get rich implementing tax dodges for their rich clients, or the rich clients will simply leave. Which means the tax take from them will be, very approximately, nil.

Having said that, I still feel that a slightly higher tax rate on high earnings has merit. But as Mr Nui shows very effectively, Hollande’s plan will have severe consequences. Instead, I would think that an extra, say, 2% on earnings over 200,000 for example will bring in the revenue without chasing the wealthy out of your country.

By the way, Hollande looks positively benevolent next to John Minto. Remember, he wants to have a tax of 100% on earnings over $250,000. No, that’s not typo – one hundred percent tax over $250,000.

..and surely anyone with two brain cells to rub together can see the utter madness of borrowing to pay for tax cuts for the richest..

I assume that the petition is to seek a citizens’ initiated referendum. The wording the clerk approves is the question to be put in a referendum. Signing the petition then indicates one supports that question being put to a vote.

Bradford is, of course, quite correct. Having children is the right of the individual. Accompanying that right is an obligation to support. While women may have the right Bradford asserts, they don’t have the right to expect everyone else to pay the price.

From Stuff: Beneficiary contraception plan ‘intrusive’

Auckland Action Against Poverty spokeswoman Sue Bradford this morning said while the contraception was voluntary, it was “totally unacceptable” for the Government to get involved in women’s reproduction.

“Most New Zealand women will not accept that. It’s because beneficiaries are seen as people who are worth less than others,” she said.

Funny, we “must” provide welfare once they have children but we can’t make it cheaper for them to avoid having children… The state must only provide the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff – Brilliant !

The pair first met in April 2010 when Dotcom sent his helicopter to collect Mr Banks from Mechanics Bay in downtown Auckland.
Dotcom said the pair met in the mansion, sitting at a large square table, and chatted.

“His [Mr Banks’] eyes got a little bit bigger at that moment.”
Mr Tempero asked the chief financial officer to come into the room to write the cheque.
“John said, ‘Wait a minute’,” Dotcom recalled last night. “‘It would be good if you could split it up into two payments of 25 [thousand dollars], then I don’t declare publicly who made it’.”
Dotcom said one cheque was made out in his own name, or the name of his company Megastuff Ltd, and the other in Mr Tempero’s name.
“He [Mr Banks] called me a few days after the cheques entered his bank account and he thanked me personally.”

Gareth Morgan’s “The Big Kahuna” should be compulsory reading for our politicians.

The big kahuna is nothing more than self-serving calculus to support his hobbyhorse of a Universal Basic Income.

Given your obvious disdain the the govt’s initiative on free contraception for women on the dpb, you would be well advised to review Morgan’s proposal for current dpb recipients under his economic plan – it amounts to “suck it up. You’ll have time to find part time work before I reduce your payments.”

As usual Luc, you are a ‘once over lightly’ type.

Let’s see Hermann had a medical condition that could (and did) suddenly incapacitate him. And this guy was a bus driver? (Yikes!) I can only hope that he believed with confidence that during the normal course of his work he could manage his condition. Otherwise, what kind of person would knowingly work in a position where they are responsible for the lives of many others while having a medical condition that could strike them down at anytime?

Having called me a liar at 8:50, and claiming that I was making a fool of myself, and that I had made factual errors – following which I pointed out that in fact he had misread what I wrote, and incorrectly attributed what I said about John Minto to Francois Hollande – I am awaiting his apology for calling me a liar.

It’s been over an hour now. Somehow I suspect I’ll be waiting for a while.

3S has “kicked in” already, with more than 1200 first strikers knowing what path they have embarked upon – because of the mandatory warning – and three “second strikers” who will serve the whole of the their sentence without parole…Mickey Savage knows that very well…Again I ask, why do you bother??

2. For someone to be my “fellow-righty” I would have to be a righty. Which I am not.

3. Just because a humourous response goes over your head, does not make me a liar or a fool.

4. You are deflecting from and neatly ignoring the undeniable fact that you got it wrong above.

To clarify point 2: Calling somebody a “righty” or a “lefty” implies that they follow blindly, without question, the traditional right-wing policies. Which I do not. I consider what is best for me, my family, and the country without prejudice. As I stated yesterday, I have previously voted Labour and the Greens, because at the time in question, considering who was in the parties and what their policies were at the time, I honestly believed that it was the best decision for my family and for the country.

I very much doubt that anyone here follows right-wing policies blindly and without question. Most people here are smarter than that.

Brian Smaller: While You may take that view – I dont personally – the fact is that under OUR 3S law it is simply impossible for anyone to go to jail for life for theft. Impossible, because that is how the law is drafted. And anyone who says otherwise is simply lying. End of.

You’re late to the party Lee and so as the author of that blog post you linked to.

Not PC blog has covered Austrian Economics on his blog for the last 6 years or so, but it is not a favourite topics to socialists , National, Labour, Greens, NZ First, Maori, etc… Only the ACT party comes close, but then you see why ACT doesn’t get much support is because voters are dumb and stupid as the words of Dick Prebble from the other thread, when he said, that Epsom voters are simply dumb middle class mum & dads who have no clue about economics.

Austrian economics is not a quantitative field as von Mises & Hayek that the application of statistics/mathematics in their philosophy is pretty much useless (which is true). However, physicists from the domain of complex-system have veered into economics and apply their theory (econophysics) to economics and found that the (economic) system behaves similarly to what Austrian economists are talking about. Austrian economists may not understand what non-equilibrium systems dynamic is all about (they call it spontaneous order), but econophysicists have developed various dynamical models in which the results are astoundingly similar to what Austrian economists have been saying all along.

The major cause of market instability is central command of the economy, simply because evolution in a complex system (be it economics, biological, physical, etc…) is always caused by local neighborhood interaction (which is not in equilibrium) and it can then spread globally. In central command economy, there is an imposed global rule on the system components which is assumed that it is in equilibrium (Keynesian) but in reality, equilibrium doesn’t and has never existed in an economic (complex system) and that’s where the surprise instability arises (it is hidden under pressure giving a false impression that it is stable) and when it arrives, it is a tsunami that can wreck everything on its path. Just look at recent years financial crises.

I read Hans-Herman Hoppe’s book ‘Democracy: The God that Failed’ last year because I was interested in his political views, not the economics, and was so impressed I started reading other Austrian school writers. So I am a late “convert” to Austrian economic theory.

The clothing [hole source of contention] apparently is in the hands of the family, as shown frequently on television. Exhibit value now nil? Perhaps I’ve seen too many CSI NY / LA / Miami, NCIS programmes …
And guess officials can now say “It is in the hands of the coroner” … for quite a while, perhaps another year.

Property crime is adequately covered in our judicial system, depending on the severity of the crime, first time offenders can face a prison term when apprehended and prosecuted, increasing sentences has in the past had little effect on offending, however more pro active work by the Police has contributed to a decline in property crimes in the last report.
Where this country falls down is in the lenient treatment of fraudsters whom recieve minimal prison sentences, if any, and escape having to repay to any degree the funds they have defrauded.
Perhaps doubling the prison terms for fraudsters will deter offenders to some degree because due to the cyclical nature of this type of offending we won’t be confronted with the same arguments in 10 years time.

In my defence, you will notice that he started it this morning when, at 8:50, he called me a liar, claimed that I was making a fool of myself, and that I had made factual errors – following which I merely pointed out that in fact he had misread what I wrote, and incorrectly attributed what I said about John Minto to Francois Hollande.

But yes, I then threw fuel on the fire by inferring that an honourable man would apologise.

how about:..you have two options..

1)..we continue to borrow/sell assets to fund tax cuts for the richest..

2)..or we reorder our priorities…end that borrowing for tax cuts..don’t sell the assets..and introduce capital gains tax..and a tobin tax on the banksters..and other easily do-able options..

..to both increase govt revenue…and stay within budget..

..which would you prefer..?

This is interesting –

A new Internet service has been launched – branded Fyx – and coming from the team at Maxnet. The Fyx service is set disrupt the market with two unique components bundled together:

1. A simple low cost ‘pay per Gigabyte’ ADSL 2+ Internet plan
2. Global Mode: Providing access to hundreds of international services that are usually blocked for New Zealanders. Includes Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, Zune, BBC iPlayer, and hundreds more
The service is being offered at base rate of $34.34/month plus 34c per Gigabyte for data usage. As is normal for ADSL services it requires subscribers to have a landline phone connection. Alternatively for an additional $25 is available a ‘Naked DSL’ option is available.

Low cost data

At 34c per Gigabyte for data, this is the lowest cost per GB plan to be offered in NZ and equates to $34 for 100GB. There are services which offer packaged internet bundles at a lower rate however there downsides for a user to being locked in to a particular plan. The main limitations are having to pay for data you don’t use, or the costs (or speed decreases) associated with hitting the data cap.

Netflix, Hulu and more

By offering a featured they call Global Mode, Fyx will be the first Internet offering in New Zealand that works around the issues that typically see international audio, video and other content blocked due to the user being outside the target region (such as USA or UK).

The most popular of those is probably Netflix which offers unlimited TV and movie streaming (from a specific catalog of content) for a fixed price of US$8/month. Netflix streaming services do not show adverts. After that the next most popular service is probably Hulu (free with adverts) and Hulu Plus (paid) which allow access to unlimited streaming of TV shows. Also growing in popularity is Amazon Video and the associated Amazon Prime video service which is very similar to Netflix but also has the option of a large catalog of Pay per view content.

The technology Fyx have in place to bypass IP location blocking uses an automatic proxy feature that is controlled by local DNS servers configured for the purpose. It’s anticipated the service will open up access to international TV and video content for 1000s of New Zealanders who have been daunted by complexity of accessing these services

So, if you wanted Netflix and Hulu, this looks like a good option. Might be bye-bye to proxy servers for those that use them.

Old Butch

John was in the fertilized egg business.

He had several hundred young layers (hens), called ‘pullets,’ and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs.

He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced.

This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters.

Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing.

Now, he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells.

John’s favorite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but this morning he noticed old Butch’s bell hadn’t rung at all!

When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, would run for cover.

To John’s amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn’t ring.

He’d sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one.

John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Saint Lawrence County Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges.

The result was the judges not only awarded old Butch the “No Bell Piece Prize,” but they also awarded him the “Pulletsurprise” as well.

Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making. Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the unsuspecting populace and screwing them when they weren’t paying attention.

Vote carefully this fall, the bells are not always audible.

Some days I came home dirty but after a shower I felt clean.
