I agree Harriet, there are parents that don’t care about their kids education and even worse don’t do anything about it if they disrupt classes (and thus impact on the learning of others) and they should be made accountable.
Unfortunately the problems that their kids create do get pushed on to schools to solve. And often schools have limited resources and authority to deal with them. Because they are a state school they haven’t got the luxury of picking and choosing who they take, and if they exclude a student that is under 16, they have to find another school for them to go to – a pretty difficult task I would imagine.
So throwing more disruptive students and students with learning needs together into a classroom sure isn’t going to help anyone.

Change of subject and looking for a bit of crowd sourcing here. I am writing a submission on behalf of a charity on the Flavell bill.

The Flavell Bill whose stated aim is to provide local communities with more power to determine where “pokie” machines may be sited, and in how the proceeds can be distributed is actually seen as quite scary by some charities whilst avoiding the issue of addressing gambling problems and current flaws with Gambling Trusts. It actually does more than this and also looks to control numbers and apply some specific tracking mechanisms to spending that will enable gamblers to accurately know and/or work on a pre-pay basis.

One of the particularly worrying aspects is giving control on funds allocation to local councils which, allowing for the poor quality of our local governance, will lead to some combination of pork barrel politics and enormous bloody bureaucracies controlling fund allocation. It does this by phasing out the “pokie trusts” or corporate societies as the distributors of community benefit money from pokie machines, and within a year’s time passes over responsibility for these distributions to special committees of local authorities with a majority of representation from community organisations, modelled on the Creative New Zealand creative communities fund committees and the former Hillary Commission local committees. The creative communities fund committees in particular already make full use of the provisions of clause 31(3) of Schedule 7 of the Local Government Act 2002 which permit councils to appoint members to council committees and subcommittees who are not members of the council. Every local authority in New Zealand is granted money from Creative New Zealand on a per head of population basis and distributes it through a council committee which has one or more councillors on it but a majority of whose members are drawn from knowledgeable people from arts and cultural groups in that district. This Bill would set up a parallel system to grant money to community, social-service, iwi, and sporting groups in their district on a fair, informed, transparent, and accountable basis….. according to the bill – looks more like a recipe for control by minorities and the council.

There is a fairly arbitrary requirement to apply 80% of funds to local authority areas. Auckland central is an obvious example to show why this is rather arbitrary.

There is a redundant capability for councils to have control on the number of pokies. They already do and most have either a cap or a sinking lid policy that appears to be reducing the numbers of pokies.

The scariest part to charities is what appears to be passing of control of the current gambling trusts’ funds to political, maori or minority interests. The current system has its flaws but frankly I personally reckon it would better to address the flaws rather than handing wholesale control to a politicised process.

Any thoughts or help?

If you think class sizes of 30+ is “scaremongering nonsense” you need to poke your head out of the sand and into a few schools. It’s already happening now.

That raises an interesting point bc as schools are funded for better ratios than that (refer above), but the actual sizes are decided by each school.

Concerned parents should be having some clear and direct conversations with principals and BoTs

Regarding class sizes.

When i was in high school 30 plus kids in a class was the norm.

All these years later i can remember that there were good teachers and fuken
hopeless teachers.

The important factor, then, as it is now, was the ability of the teacher.

That is why performance pay for school teachers is so important.

Even if the ratio was 6 students to one teacher, if the teacher was dropkick useless
then that would not help the students.

Seems that at last that point is now being recognised all over the world.

Trade unions for public servants is wrong.

It will come to be recognised that teachers unions in New Zealand have, over the years, done the whole
country a huge disservice.

Any one like to dispute that ?

Probably the difference between the current teacher:pupil ratios and what actual exists in schools has more to do with ‘creative’ (ie deceptive) accounting by the government.
What’s the bet that the ratio includes the principal who usually doesn’t even teach a class, and other members of senior management who spend a small fraction of their job in the classroom.
It’s a common ploy. Last week on The Nation, our Minister of Education came out with the “average” teacher salary statistic again, except the “average” was the top of the scale! Thankfully the interviewer pulled her up on it and she admitted that the “average” includes principals who are on a different contract to teachers!

We’re settling down in front of the fire to watch “Operation 8” (when we get permission from the three year old to access our own TV). I have a strong suspicion that the cops have been lying through their teeth on all sorts of aspects in this case and it’s time to get an independent viewpoint.

Although I do realise that most Kiwibloggers take everything the cops say as gospel.

And I’m interested in the details of how the terrorists were going to arrange for a bus to fall on Dubya’s head! That could almost have been described as a mercy killing.

Luc for your theory to be true one has to assume the police going right up to the Police Commissioner for who else pray tell briefed Annette the night before it happened, are all extremely stupid to a man, because they failed miserably to discern the rather elementary difference between an actual threat requiring expenditure in the millions to combat, for what it really was, which is clearly just an innocent bunch frolicking in their forest. Every single member of the police hierarchy in that really big and complex operation was just plain wrong in every way, and the journos and the people accused of the crimes, are the only ones telling the truth.

So no, I accept the cops fit people up, Luc. Of course they do. Is this one of those times? No way. It’s not. You, and the entire MSM are both totally wrong on this, I wish you, and phil as well, would get that extremely simple drop dead obvious f.a.c.t. through your thick skulls. Crikey. The cops were on a hiding to nothing whatever they did. If their intelligence was that a group of retards were playing with guns & molotov cocktails while talking revolution & killings the police were duty bound to act. So far so good.

Their mistake was the over the top action taken to investigate the Tuhoe nutters…..the AOS well may have been necessary as backup but turning over citizens & school buses at gunpoint should be left to Hollywood. Their overkill when arresting Dotcom further reinforces the public’s view that the top brass within the NZ Police & sanity have parted company.

Time for the gendarmerie to step back & see themselves through the eyes of the people they are policing.

A GERMAN 16-year-old has become the first person to solve a mathematical problem posed by Sir Isaac Newton more than 300 years ago.

Shouryya Ray worked out how to calculate exactly the path of a projectile under gravity and subject to air resistance, The (London) Sunday Times reported.

The Indian-born teen said he solved the problem that had stumped mathematicians for centuries while working on a school project.

Mr Ray won a research award for his efforts and has been labeled a genius by the German media, but he put it down to “curiosity and schoolboy naivety”.

“When it was explained to us that the problems had no solutions, I thought to myself, ‘well, there’s no harm in trying,'” he said.

nasska place oneself back before we all gained 20/20 hindsight. So at this moment, days before the raid, the police knew groups of people were up there with weapons who were threatening to kill. It’s basic threat assessment to look at intel on all sorts of things including the involved personalities. Iti blasting the NZ flag years before, for example, is not something your average citizen would do, is one of the many elements in this equation. Over all of this, the global terror equation is overlaid which like it or not applies to NZ as much as elsewhere, you bet, if you’re the cops. Why not? It would be negligent if they didn’t apply that flavour to this sort of activity. Life is not a game since 911, is it. No. So don’t fucking play with guns and then complain you didn’t really mean it, is really the right approach, isn’t it.

So you’re the cops and let’s say you’ve got surveillance video of these guys. The fact it will later prove inadmissible due to shortcomings in the design of the stupid law which was Liarbore’s fault is not yet known. So as the cops, you’re good to go.

If you don’t do it hard, your risk is unknown but not unthinkable you could lose a person tonight if you compromise on anything. Human life is at stake, the night before all this happened, would have been a basic police calculation. It must have been.

So I don’t really understand why anyone has a problem, given all these facts as they were known beforehand.

To paint it after the fact as some OTT from day one as some have, does not mean it was like that, when it went down.

I just think its unhelpful on every single level, to pretend it was like that, at all in any way.

LJ: Very good points…I still think they were a little OTT pulling kids off school buses and searching old women…I have read the affidavit – all 155 pages of it – and although it is profoundly disturbing , nothing it in suggests Iti or his mates were using kids and old ladies to conceal anything..

But the police commissioner was 100% right NOT to have offered an apology to the assholes who got arrested…

I concede that I am utilising hindsight but through their video surveillance & general intelligence sources the Police would have known the clowns they were after. I never said that the AOS shouldn’t have been involved but I do think they could have been equally effective had they been in the background.

The cops acknowledge that they police by public consent. They are not daft & must know that the average Kiwi does not regard their police force doing Rambo impressions with much enthusiasim.

If it was a one off I probably wouldn’t have commented but the Tuhoe incident & the subsequent Dotcom fiasco would suggest that either the CIA has too much influence in NZ or the police hierarchy are watching too much TV.

you had seen video of these guys practising warfare with semi auto weapons. You know up to 100 had passed though these training camps in the bush. Its a small community only about 5000 total with very little intell actually coming direct from the community when its probable most if not all in new wot was happing to some degree. FFS i am a red neck bloody jafa and I knew they were up to something along the lines of the original charges. Do you go in to arrest them with one clock in your holster only if you believe in western heroes. You go in with modern police tactics shock and awe force to protect the lives of your officers close the whole area down and arrest those you need to. all it would have taken is one stupid fuck wit to back up all the talk they had been spouting and we would have a copper dead.Hopefully not something any of us like to see

What’s the bet that the ratio includes the principal who usually doesn’t even teach a class, and other members of senior management who spend a small fraction of their job in the classroom.

But that wouldn’t work bc. If the school is funded for a ratio and they count the principal (and other staff) in the teacher count, then they would just be doing themselves out of teachers.

For example, a role of 300 at 1:25 (to make it easy) – if they counted the principal and a couple of other HoDs, then they would only have 9 full time teaching staff funded at that ratio. That would mean they were doing themselves out of fulltime teachers.

And there perhaps is the key. Only in reverse…

Perhaps what the schools are doing is taking the funding (12 teachers in the example above) and creating large classes with fewer full time teachers, so that they can use some of their funding to pay for other functions in the administration.

Now that makes sense

Naaska. quite correct.
In both cases plenty was known about the people arrested.
Ihave a friend who lived in Iraq while Hussein was in power and he lives in dread of that kind of power and use of arms coming to NZ.
We should all be concerned that the abuse of power is allowed unscruitinised. There will be times when it IS necessary but neither of these occasions met that threshold IMHO.

Roll on the day when they roll up to gang pads in hellicopters.

That’s the danger. NZ police may not be openly armed but the public generally accepts that they should have access to firearms when required. IMHO the AOS are being utilised as a shock troops rather than a specialist branch of the police.

The Dotcom incident makes my skin crawl with embarrassment when I realise that our policing is influenced by the CIA.

Dotcom was a travesty
We should not have got involved with the enforcing of American laws that protect the profits of big corporations
I have a dislike of America and its politics The ongoing cooperation and push towards the so called free trade agreement with the states is not to the benefit of our country The USA is basically a corrupt theocracy mostly controlled by fundie Christian principles and corporate greed
Freedom of the Internet to develop outside of political interference is the biggest gift we can give future generations
The arrest and imprisonment of dotcom is purely a American suck up and should not have happened
However the risk for the coppers to go into a compound and arrest someone protected by security guards is again a place were shock and awe tactics are legitimately used . So no fault to the fuzz I blame the politics
I just wish they would use the same tactics to disband the scooter trash If they do the same to hells arseholes the forty fleas or mongrel mob I would feel event more positive about this sort of tactic

Perhaps he had the temerity to have ideas about how to improve the world and help people that differ from the most obvious ones that Lefties know are the right ones because it should be obvious to everyone.

Anyone critical of the idea of welfare dependency as a right, makes themselves an enemy of phule.

Suggest that maybe parents could find part time work while their kids are in school, and he wont brake if he sees you crossing the road.

Well at least it keeps the children happy.

Having had a beer with a wide range of people, Psycho milt and GD at the same time would be fun, taking into account they’re mature men with something to say. I’d ask them to bring a message about who they are and what they believe in, their attitude toward others, sport and maybe government. Maybe a story about what it was that they feel was part of making them who they are today. What they might regret from the past and what they hope to do in the future. I’ve drunk with too many tough guys to care about that stuff, but I like a person who knows themselves honestly under their own skin and who isn’t angry or boastful about it. I’d be happy for Phillip to come along and there 4 strangers we would be, but not so strange as one might think.

There’s no sin in taking a look at the other point of view.

For example, although I prefer Keynes, I’m an avid reader of Hayek. In fact, I probably study Hayek more than Keynes, just to inform myself on the great man’s thinking – but Keynes was greater.

And to agree with nasska for once, I have never met an unpleasant American. But I steer clear of politics. Their body politic is truly sick.
