Did anyone notice how TV3 news tried to vilify Key for daring to speak up about media being adversarial? The saddest part was that in this whole story the media presents itself in such a way, as to make us think that being adversarial to government is what it is there for. Stupid old me thought the media was there to report the facts and the viewer makes up his own mind without partisan comments from presenters and authors.
First time I saw fear in Key’s eyes in a long time.

The amounts of money quoted in the article about Ministerial expenses are laughable. Only backwater lotto buying rolly smoking hicks would find this newsworthy. Fucking $400 for ministerial laundry and drycleaning when staying overseas, big fucking woop! Stop the press, those rich pricks are loading off the taxpayer. The editor who thiks this is news should be take out teh back of teh office and stoned to death next to the trash compactor.

1. Melbourne’s “fat tax” on fast food outlets: NZ attempts to enter this area would be yet another example of Local Bodies stricking their noses into matters beyond their brief (Well, beyond what the present central Goverment believes is appropriate.) Stick to roads, rubbish, sewage and water!

2. Will the NZ Government purchase surplus (ex Iraq/Afghanistan) US surveillance drones (which are now being sold and used by US police, to patrol our economic zone? Now that the Navy is mothballing some patrol boats it would be a cost effective option, would it not? Reports from the US state that the 2nd hand drones are cheaper to purchase and operate than helicopters – and provide “better data”.

On Feb. 22, 1924 Calvin Coolidge became the first president to make a public radio address to the American people. President Coolidge later helped create the Federal Radio Commission, which has now evolved to become the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). President Obama became the first president to hold virtual gatherings and town halls using Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, etc.

And so forth for virtually every President. I don’t think I can even call this normal narcissism. What is it? Losing the plot? Staff incompetence? Echo chamber syndrome? A campaign with the wheels falling off?

Does no one in the Obama administration have any sense of how hideously funny and insane this looks from the outside? It looks like one of Caligula episodes from I, Claudius. Bill Clinton, watching this, must be curled up in the fetal position.

It’s always sad when “The People” are the last ones to figure it out: Has The Greek Bank Run Started?, complete with photos of lines at ATM’s, although that could just be a busy area or some other false photo-tagging in twitter. But the thing is that it could (and actually should) be true when one considers how much money has been extracted by Greek citizens via internet transfers to foreign accounts. That is documented and it has been going on for a year – and it appears to be speeding up:

“Anxious Greeks have withdrawn as much as 700 million euros ($893 million) from the nation’s banks since the inconclusive May 6 election, President Karolos Papoulias told party leaders yesterday, according to a transcript of the meeting posted on the presidency’s website today.

Overall Greek bank deposits are at something like 60% of 2008 levels the last time I looked. That’s why those ATM photos could be real, it would be amazing if people were not pulling cash, they’d represent the last-to-know crowd. Sad.

Only a complete moron (or someone who has never travelled on business) would think that laundry and dry cleaning costs totalling $400, would be anything but reasonable.

But if your usual ‘dress sense’ is to look like a back country hillbilly and to smell like something the cat dragged in, then I suppose it could be considered worthy of column centimetres…. especially in the NZ Hoorald.

The Mandate system, a form of imposed international trusteeship, was devised by the victorious powers, chiefly Britain and France, to give a veneer of legality to their post-war military occupation and rule over the former Middle Eastern Arab provinces of the defeated Ottoman Empire. Thus, while Britain obtained mandates over Iraq, Palestine, and Trans-Jordan, France obtained mandates over Syria and Lebanon. The main purpose of Britain’s mandate over Palestine was to give effect to a unilateral promise made by its government in 1917 (the Balfour Declaration, after the then British foreign secretary) to the World Zionist Organization (WZO) to establish “a Jewish National Home” in Palestine.

At the time of the Balfour Declaration, about 90 percent of the population of Palestine was Arab and about 10 percent Jewish. Needless to say the Palestine Arabs were never consulted about either the Balfour Declaration or the British mandate over their country.

Advancing from British-occupied Egypt, British forces had wrested Jerusalem from the Ottomans in December 1917. The period 1920-1948 saw the relentless growth of the Jewish National Home through massive Jewish immigration from Eastern and Central Europe under Britain’s imperial protection, despite increasingly desperate Palestinian protests and resistance.

Already by the mid-1940s the Zionist leadership, headed by the redoubtable David Ben-Gurion and drawing upon the support of the American Jewish community, felt strong enough to want Britain out of the way. With the Yishuv (1) highly militarized, it was confident that it could overcome any Arab opposition to turning the Jewish National Home into the Jewish state, which had been the WZO’s objective ever since the first Zionist Congress in 1897. Caught between the two contending parties in a conflict of its own making, Britain finally decided to turn “the problem” over to the UN, successor to the League of Nations.

In November 1947, thanks to massive US pressure on the UN member states, (1948 was an American Presidential election year), the UNGA recommended the partition of Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab state, with a special international regime (corpus separatum) for Jerusalem and its hinterland.

The UN partition, presented as a compromise between the two communities was anything but. It gave the Jewish population, which by then had artificially grown into about 30 percent of the population, over half (55 percent) of Palestine where Jews owned less than 8 percent of the land. It condemned hundreds of thousands of Palestinians within the UN-drawn boundaries to live in separation from their compatriots as a minority in the Jewish state-to-be.

The Jews were overjoyed, but the Palestinians were outraged at this dismemberment of their country and fragmentation of their society – a prolonged nightmare realized. Artfully the Zionist leaders represented their “acceptance” of partition as evidence of their readiness to “compromise” and to comply with the will of the international community.

Well before November 1947, David Ben-Gurion had already envisaged partition (i.e. a Jewish state in a part of Palestine) not only as an opportunity to “transfer” (i.e. expel) the Palestinians from the state to make way for Jewish immigrants from overseas, but also as a bridgehead to expand the state beyond its borders with the help of these immigrants (2). To achieve his geostrategic objectives, he had devoted the decade before November 1947 to building the military might of the Yishuv via the Haganah (and its striking force the Palmach) as well as to detailed military planning. The November 1947 UNGA partition resolution was the ultimate green-light for Ben-Gurion to go into action.

Ben-Gurion’s master plan for the military takeover of Palestine and the transfer of Palestinians in the wake of the 1947 UNGA’s resolution was known as “Plan Dalet” (3). British withdrawal from Palestine began soon after the resolution was passed. The vacuum created by this withdrawal was quickly filled by the Haganah, which carefully avoided clashing with the departing British. In early April 1948, Plan Dalet was put into operation. Within six weeks, such were the Zionist victories that Israeli statehood could be declared the day the Mandate officially ended, on 15 May 1948 – symbolically chosen by the Palestinians as Nakba Day.

By that time the Plan’s devastating impact on the civilian Palestinian population (hundreds of thousands had already abandoned their homes) was well in evidence. Indeed, but for this vast Palestinian exodus into the neighboring Arab countries generated by Plan Dalet (and the atrocities committed by the “dissident” terrorist gangs, Irgun and Stern), it is doubtful that the collective intervention on 15 May of the regular forces of the Arab League member states would have taken place following the departure of the British. But already this intervention was too little and too late.

As for nascent Israel’s “Davidian” status vis-a vis the Goliath of the “invading” Arab states, Ben Gurion provides eloquent testimony on it in his War Diary. Thus, on 24 May 1948, less than ten days after the Arab armies had entered those parts of Palestine allocated to the Arab state under the partition plan to preempt the advancing Jewish forces, David Ben-Gurion wrote (4):

Maklef [Carmeli brigade] should receive reinforcements. His job is to occupy South Lebanon after bombing Tyre, Sidon and Beirut from the air. We will also shell Beirut from the sea. Yigal [Alon] should hit Syria [Syrian army] at [Mishmar Haemek] from the East and the North. Our airforce must bomb and destroy Amman. The weak link in the Arab coalition is Lebanon because Muslim authority there is artificial, and easy to undermine. We must establish a Christian state with the Litani River as its southern border (5). We will form an alliance with it.

Once we destroy the power of the Arab Legion [the army of Trans-Jordan] we will destroy Tran-Jordan and Syria will then fall. If Egypt dares to continue fighting, we will bomb Port Said, Alexandria and Cairo. This is how we shall end this war and wind up our ancestors’ accounts with Egypt, Ashur and Aram….

On the media … I see Rebekah Brooks is ‘baffled’ by the charges being laid against her, and that she ‘cannot express my anger enough that those closest to me have been dragged into this unfairly.’

The media, over the last few years, have in my opinion being pushing the boundaries further and further, caring not a jot whether what they do is morally justified, and using the tiredest cliches in the book to justify what they print and broadcast – “the public’s right to know” and “freedom of the press”.

In my opinion the media is long overdue for being taken to task, and made to think about some of the garbage they produce and the effect it has on the people in question. High time the spotlight and cameras and questions were directed at them for a change.

We are going to lift our standards (already in the top two or three OECD nations) by cutting teaching staff. She says research shows it is the quality of the teaching that counts, not class sizes, yet we know that the research the government is fond of quoting says no such thing.

The dissembling by Parata and the government is immense, from misrepresenting the number of kids who leave school without NCEA 2 (1 in 16, not 1 in 20) to saying a fivefold increase in teaching staff has not resulted in a fivefold increase in results. The latter is just stupid. At a time when developed countries are pouring more and more resources into education, this country has held its own, or improved, even though it is definitely the poor cousin when compared to similar performing countries.

Wait for DPF to post soon, chortling with delight as his pet lies are now in the headlines.

According to wiki (yeah, I know, but) the NoTW was “the cheapest newspaper of its time” and “quickly established itself as a purveyor of titillation, shock and criminal news” after it foundation in1843.

The original Washington Post piece stated the following:

Yet in an interview with ABC News today, White disowned that characterization:

While the Post reports White as having “long been bothered” by the haircutting incident,” he told ABC News he was not present for the prank, in which Romney is said to have forcefully cut a student’s long hair and was not aware of it until this year when he was contacted by the Washington Post.

Originally the WP just changed the wording to their story, but didn’t inform the readers that they had changed the story. They now have.

Here’s what one of Romney’s friends, Gregg Dearth says about him in an article from Auto Mag –

“With his powerful father, ‘He could have been an arrogant, stuck-up, snotty little brat,’ says Dearth. ‘But he was a great guy — an all-American kid with a great sense of humor, very self-effacing.’ And although it’s been documented that Romney played a teenage prank or two — including once impersonating a police officer in order to scare some female friends — Dearth remembers Mitt as the most straitlaced kid in the neighborhood. ‘Those of us who tested the boundaries in high school still marvel at the self-discipline he displayed,’ Dearth continues. ‘With a father who was then governor, Mitt knew where the line was and never crossed it. Well said David Garrett (11.28am), although the drug references might be stretching the bounds of propriety just a little.

Phil, as most good parents would, gets a bit upset when his son is brought into the debate. The irony though is that Phil himself has brought his son into the debate, by stating as he has that he cannot work because he is not prepared for his som to be in any kind of childcare either after school or in the school holidays. This is in spite of the fact that his son is now more than 14 years old, and can legally be left at home on his own.

Phil may have his foibles, but he is not uncapable of working. After all, he has a Masters degree, and you generally don’t get one of those off the back of a Weetbix packet. With modern technologies, and with his obvious ability to search the internet, there’s no reason why he couldn’t work from home either.

He’s definitely picked the wrong person in Northland Wahine to get into a scrap with. Your updates on the skirmish will be looked forward to with a degree of anticipation.

Well if you’re talking about people who have no idea about the huge role played by the Senate and House in the US government, people who think President=Emperor/God King, then the implied irritation behind the question would make sense. In other words, it’s not that important because that’s not the nature of the beast.

But this is a political blog, so naturally enough people are interested (not interested enough in my opinion) in the leadership of the world’s only hyperpower, even as those limitations on it are understood.

But aside from the aspect of political junkies, the question should be turned around: how could anybody think that the government of the world’s most powerful economy, most powerful military, and the generator of almost every significant social trend of the last 50 years at least, was not a worthy object of fascination?

The original anti-Semitics were the Europeans, through pogroms and genocide, over centuries. it is simply a lie to suggest that Arabs were in any way involved in this European behaviour. There has never been centuries of Arab repression of Jews that would compare with the actions of Europeans upon their own. It was the Ottoman Empire who gave haven to Jews when they were forced from Spain. And their status under the Ottomans had both advantages and disadvantages, and was little different to the treatment meted out to other non-Muslim ethnicities.

F E Smith and Kowtow elevate the ambitions of European Jewry as regards Palestine as more important that the actual inhabitants of that land, who were always and are presently denied the right of self-determination, which was the general international decolonisation policy subsequent to WWII.

There’s the true racism on display here.

Of course, if the fighters had been close enough to shoot down the planes, conspiracy theorists could have used that to create a crazy conspiracy theory. Given the extreme sensitivity of the information and the actual act of shooting down a passenger jet, they could have come up with a lot more too. Instead, an event that didn’t happen proves the conspiracy…

Israel has only been attacked once, in 1972. The Arab armies, mainly irregulars, entered in 1948 to protect Palestinians who had already been driven out of much of the land allocated them by the UN. Beginning in late 1947, the Jews of Palestine attacked and ethnically cleansed large areas of Palestine that had been allocated to the Arab population. The remaining conflicts since that time have all been initiated by Israel. You may consider each to be justified, but that’s not the point in this correction to your narrative.
