I’m sorry, but I have to agree with philu – Brownlee’s defence of the roading programme is very weak – it boils down to “we think it’s a good idea to spend many billions on roads because it’s a good idea.”

Why anybody would want to spend that sort of coin in Grey Lynn is beyond me.
Houses are moving in central Auckland, if they are weatherboard, brick and tile, and don’t leak. If (as a gross generalisation) they are monolithic clad and built after 1995 you have problems.
Banks are lending but with more care than before. there are also a lot of expats coming back with money buring a hole in their pockets.

The interview of David Shearer by Rachel Smalley on TV 3 this morning had four interesting points. Firstly, Shearer acknowledges that Mallard & Little were acting under his directions and had been since the matter arose. He then stated that there was no obligation on them to “man up” and show what facts they relied upon to substantiate the allegations. He stated that they did not have to do anything unless and until Collins pursued the defamation proceedings. The third point was that if Collins does proceed, every e-mail and every phone call would then be put on record and this is what they wanted from the start.

These 3 points are significant because they suggest an orchestrated strategy. There is a very strong suggestion that Mallard & Little were motivated by improper purposes. It has been sometime since I looked at the cases relating to the use of documents disclosed on “discovery” but I am quite sure that Mallard & Little cannot use them for political purposes and, I rather suspect, that these documents would never become part of a public record unless they substantiated or refuted the specific issues. The interview suggests that Mallard & Little (more correctly, the Labour Party) are prepared to let the defamatory comments stand so that they can extract documentation which they will use to prove political points.
Shearer said that the proposed proceedings were without precedent. In the sense that few MPs have been stupid enough to repeat allegations outside the house, he may be correct. The interview today however suggests that it may not necessarily have been stupidity that lead them to make the comments but a planned out strategy. I hope Collins goes ahead and I hope the court admits evidence that the Labour Party leader was directing the defendants not to produce any evidence substantiating the truth of the allegations until they had to.
The fourth point related to the casino. Rachel Smalley asked whether Auckland needed a convention centre. She then sat back while Shearer totally ignored the question, focused entirely on poker machines and legislation and did not mention creation of jobs once. Not once did she ask him for comment on the other side of the argument. So long as TV 3 allows her unashamed bias to show through on any political interview, TV 3 will have no credibility whatsoever as far as current affairs are concerned.

Great column from Eric Thompson in this morning’s Herald about Western Springs and the FIM Speedway GP that was an overwhelming success at the weekend. The NIMBY’s nearly managed to get Western Springs closed a few years ago, but the speedway community revolted. The guts of their dispute is that they bought their houses at deflated prices because of the proximity of the speedway; if they succeed in getting speedway turfed out of Western Springs, their property values will rise accordingly (and they’re not that far from Grey Lynn; nice segue eh!).

Here’s hoping that Len Brown will represent the interests of the 23,500 who packed Western Springs on Saturday, and not a few greedy NIMBY’s.

Police cant win either way and for the mother to say she hasnt heard from the officer Ihope isnt a go at the police, for he would be unable to contact the family untill they indicated that was their wish,to do so would be very badly advised.

Western Springs residents who oppose urban Speedway aren’t NIMBYS. The acronym NIMBY describes someone who advocates a certain proposal but baulks at having it installed in their neighbourhood.

Where do you live KS? Although Shearer admitted to calling the shots after the statements were made, he did not go so far as to acknowledge complicity in the making of the comments. I would hope that the now announced strategy prompts Collins to seek exemplary damages.

The thing is that people have to find somewhere to live and housing is expensive (largely due to population growth and the need to instantly provide infrastructure out of the taxes of our low wage population and need for an urban plan). Population growth is a policy choice of government and government is to a large degree the result of political lobbying and patronage.
Nimbyism is strong as people just want to get on and enjoy their properties, it is the developers (etc) who want growth forever.

As a corollary to the Speedway whiners, my pet hate is wankers who buy rural sections or lifestyle blocks adjacent to a working farm & then start complaining about noise & smells to anyone who will listen. They have a dreamy vision that farming is all green fields & bouncing lambs, then get upset when reality doesn’t conform to their fantasy.

nasska: Agreed. I moved to a lifestyle block 5 years ago, and it’s been a wonderful experience. Don’t know about this “peace of the country”, though, you can hear the cows in paddocks miles away! We joke about rural traffic jams – you know, when you drive along the road and find the farmer crossing his cows from one side of the road to the other, or moving the sheep down the road to another paddock.

It’s all good.

I wonder why people try to scam money from lotto winners? Do they perceive lotto winners as weak willed and easily fooled to giving away their fortune?

There are plenty of easily identifiable wealthy people in NZ… I wonder if these people get constantly badgered for money? I wouldn’t think so much as a lotto winner which is really strange.

Softening us up for a green-light announcement over Easter for the Chinese takeover of Crafar farms?

In the foreign-controlled NZ Herald today, Siah Hwee Ang, a University of Auckland business staffer, lectures us on how stupid and backward are NZers who oppose China’s takeover of our farmland.

We are talking about our dairy industry, in which NZ is the world’s most competitive country, and which has been trying to put some technology into its child-poisoning Chinese equivalent,the pretty rough Chinese dairy industry.

Yet Siah Hwee Ang, criticising NZ (us), says:

… Our non-competitiveness does not automatically give New Zealand firms the competitive mind-set necessary to compete globally with larger and more innovative businesses …

The NZ dairy industry is not inernationally competitive?

AND

[overseas investment> … is, in fact, exactly what New Zealand needs in terms of productivity, labour skills – both technical and managerial – innovation and international mind-sets, knowledge and networks.

What does China have to offer the NZ dairy industry in terms of skill?

Siah Hwee Ang also praises China:

The case of China speaks volumes for what the New Zealand Government is about to do. Even for stand-alone investment by foreign entities, there are always benefits for us.

Siah Hwee Ang, why has China virtually locked out foreign investment from its steel industry? WHy doesn’t it allow foreigners to buy land (except in some special joint cases of city property)?

China is trying to buy up the supply chain everywhere. Naturally, it is putting its own interests first. But it has nothing to offer the NZ dairy industry except pushing up local land prices.

Siah Hwee Ang, originally a Singaporean, has been at the university since 2003.

Semi-authoritarian Singapore successfully attracted foreign investment that brought scientific and technical expertise. This was closely linked to its education policies and development of local skills. This brought in waves of knowledge in, for example, disk-drive manufacture,as its earlier largely labour-cost based international industries such as printing began to come under competition from China.

In the Crafar farms, case, however, China brings nothing (except money).

Spot on……regardless of how far out in the sticks you live there’ll be noise or some other distraction. It’s just that some people don’t do their homework & then expect everyone else to conform to their dreams of undisturbed peace.

To this end I saw (in a USA farming magazine) a poster that most cockies living within half an hour of a city should hang on their fences. It reads:

Farms have animals.

Funny sounds,
Smell bad &
Have sex outdoors.

Unless you can tolerate:

Noise

Don’t buy a property

@ Scott Chris; I live in Wanganui, about a mile from the speedway which I can hear when a westerly is blowing. I live just across the river from where the Cemetery Circuit motor bike races are held every year on Boxing Day. I live the same distance from Cook’s Gardens where concerts, fireworks and athletics are held, audibly.

Do I complain? No. Was I aware of the events when I bought? Yes. Did it make any difference to my decision to purchase there? None in the slightest. Would I be so arrogant as to flex my muscles and try and get things shut down? Not on your nelly.

I don’t expect everyone to enjoy speedway with the same passion that I and others do. Nor do I expect everyone to hold the same views as I do on climate change. It’d be a boring old world if we were all the same. And unlike Phil and yourself, I don’t expect my views to be accepted by everyone, nor do I have the arrogance to demand it.

I studied Latin to School Cert level (and passed!), and an old Latin expression is relevant to this debate; caveat emptor; let the buyer beware. Those who bought in Old Mill Road and other locations around Western Springs did so knowing that noise was part of the package. It is totally arrogant of them now to try and impose their will on the thousands who enjoy a speedway fix at Western Springs on summer nights.

KS: Exactly. I would never buy an apartment in Auckland city, simply because living in that environment doesn’t appeal. Depending on where the aprtment is, I know there will be people walking by outside at all hours of the night and early morning, drunk as anything and making loads of noise – doesn’t appeal, funnily enough. So I don’t buy there.

..the library and borders books were our regular haunts..

..the regular free concerts/mini-gigs at real groovy..

..surrounded by cheap foodhalls..

..’the boy’ thriving in the responsibily of being sent off to do city chores..on his own…

..(he loved the city dwelling..still talks wistfully of it..)

..no need to have a vehicle…

.i could go on..

..and funnily enough..noise often signifies life/energy…

..and the best city i have spent a reasonable amount of time in..for all those reasons and so much more..

You’re really starting to dribble. That stuff you’re using is intended for horses not for humans (well you are, sort of!). I’m surprised the vet turns his back on you when you take the four-legged family members in for a check-up.

Take a rest, the facial numbness should ease after about another eight hours, provided of course you scaled the rate down from a horse doseage. Then you can get back out on the job-hunting front without appearing to have an even more unfortunate impediment than your allergy to work.

Or is that why you’re taking it in the first place?

With the fours weeks (20 days annual leave), when can you start using it? During the first 12 months of working for an employer, can you take the four weeks in that first 12 month period or are you only entitled to start taking it after your first 12 months?

Appreciate any clarification.

The right to take a holiday arises at the expiration of 12 months’ employment. You should however check the employment agreement and ascertain whether it contains any specific provision more favourable to the employee than the Act. It is unlikely but sometimes happens.

I live in the Wangaehu River Valley. It is generally quiet except for frost fans at the kiwifruit orchard, bird scarers, trucks, cows, sheep, cockatoos, pheasants, peacocks, possums, random gunfire from hunters up in the hills (or in the paddock outside of a deer wanders down to the farm), top dressing planes, the neighbours helicopter. Still love it though.

longknives..there are likely multiple reasons for the differences between us..and say..finland..

..(with them imprisoning 15 citizens per 100,000..and us at over 100 per 100,000..

..a difference i wd submit..that is jaw-dropping…and given the massive costs of that imprisonment..

..should have us spluttering ‘what/how..?’..

..and looking to what they do..to see what we can learn…surely..?

..but an obvious one would be imprisonment for drugs…

..drugs is a health issue…not a justice one..

(this is also where portugal has been so successful..legalisation of personal use of all drugs for over a decade…

..and medical help/support for those that need it..)

..our prison imperatives are backward/victorian…and are a raging/uber-expensive failure…

..to me this is the upside of brownlees’ finn-stupidity…

…he has bought this most stunning/enlightening/sign we are doing it wrong..out into the open..

..that law of unintended consequences kicking in again…

..how can you possibly defend such a horrendous/expensive imprisonment/recidivist-rate..?

..when clearly there are much better/cheaper alternatives to hand..?

..that way lies madness..

Must be nice to leave work and jaunt off to a Leadership Conference.

Labour MP Jacinda Ardern has been caught in devastating tornadoes which have torn through Texas in the United States.

At least two large and dangerous tornadoes ripped across northern Texas this morning, causing major damage and grounding flights, but leaving no reported casualties.

Ardern was at Dallas Fort Worth Airport this morning as part of an international leadership conference when a tornado warning siren sounded and passengers were told to get away from the windows.

So how does this help the average taxpayer?

I have never wasted a mouse click on it) and also his comments here and elsewhere. It’s just dawned on me..perhaps it’s all part of Phil’s cunning plan; write inane drivel all over the interweb as evidence he can’t work!

Ah…but you dont have to be even literate to be Pete’s offsider at I Suk Up septic tank cleaners. (Proudly cleaning septics in the Rodney area for 15 years)

I am actually trying my best not the bait the man..he clearly has major “issues” – and that was BEFORE the investigators opened a file on him – and I try to be as compassionate to my fellow man as possible.

Scanning through the comments below the photo i thought ‘Mickrodge’ hit the nail on the head with his
party analogy.

Another reason to avoid removing GST from some food items….

In the UK, they have a new rule to charge VAT based on the food temperature (ie, is it cooked or not)…..

Under the rules, released by the Treasury, a lukewarm pasty may not attract the sales tax on warmer days because it would be below the “ambient temperature”.

But the same pasty could be hit with a VAT charge in the winter.

Here’s a conspiracy theory to out-conspire all others…

Could it be that lobbyist/PR firms from time to time call on Philu to clog up Kiwiblog’s General Discussion threads? They would do this when they wanted to turn everyone off the GD threads when they had something highly contentious to unleash on the public.

i do have total contempt for him though.

Many people pity him, but.

Having done apartment living in the centre of a city I can say it has its advantages. Buy/Rent on or near the top floor – great views – least burgled, less noise than a typical suburban house and no-one walking above in clogs at 3 AM. In fact, seriously considering moving back in to the city once we retire for access to facilities especially the spectacle that is the weird and unusual people that brighten up our world. Currently, on a larger section pretty much in a reserve but then again peace and quiet after work is more attractive at present – so not a suburb hater.
