Here, further to your suggestion an evening or so ago that I was wanting to do lawyers out of a job, this is good –

A measure to abolish California’s death penalty qualified for the November ballot on Monday.

If it passes, the 725 California inmates now on Death Row will have their sentences converted to life in prison without the possibility of parole. It would also make life without parole the harshest penalty prosecutors can seek.

Backers of the measure say abolishing the death penalty will save the state millions of dollars through layoffs of prosecutors and defense attorneys who handle death penalty cases, as well as savings from not having to maintain the nation’s largest death row at San Quentin prison.

Those savings, supporters argue, can be used to help unsolved crimes. If the measure passes, $100 million in purported savings from abolishing the death penalty would be used over three years to investigate unsolved murders and rapes.

No he didn’t, the chief censor ( Bill Hastings ??)was the one that allowed explicit sex scenes into New Zealand.

Porn is rather a commercial business anyway, as much as I like to blame the labour party for everything including the common cold they did not, have not and never probably will own the pornography industry in NZ or any where else

There doesn’t have to be a law change for everything, the C/censor was paid to make a decision and he did, awesome, whether you agree with the product is not the point, he just did his job . The next change was in 1994 or so with the Video recording Act which illegalised many fetish’s and these have always been cut out of NZ porn ( urination, obviously anything proporting to be children and anything violently sexual )

Thes e laws kept the porn just involving humans, but the net has bypassed NZ legislation and evrything is available for the freaks sickos

And NZ wasn’t that coy either we had had full frontal nudity on TV for years going back to “The Governor’ “.

Tits on telly was no problem if it was made in NZ. You’re no 25 year old Reid so you must remember all this

Yes I recall PEB but you’re saying that was just because the censor decided to let it in?

What do you know about this?

Are you saying that all the rule were in place, e.g. it could have been done say in Muldoon’s time but it just wasn’t? (If that is what you’re saying, then why didn’t it happen when Muldoon was in power?)

I’m really trying to understand this, it just seems to me a gate just doesn’t open without anyone doing something, alternatively if its seen to be an undesirable gate then its normally closed and neither of those things happened from your account thus far – it just swung open as if by magik. Real world doesn’t work like this PEB, so what were the dynamics, if you happen to know.

The chief censor had films put before him for classification, prior to Everard they had acted as if they were the moderators of the indecent publications Act, guarding my morals, making dcisions based on what they thought would damage my moral fibre and that of NZ

Everard took the point of view that this wasn’t his job and passed videos that would have previously been banned because it wasn’t his job to impose the view of sections of society onto others.

If you wanted to hire porn you could, if you didn’t you didnt have to. This upset Bartlett and Co who thought they ahd a natural right to make decisions for me and have their moral view upheld by the Censors office… imagine being able to make a decision for yourself, bloody brilliant.

Wiki Everard its interesting especially how they did bring pressure to bear and his was effectively sacked by the time term placed on the office.

What you have to remember also Reid is that porn never really took off until VCR’s were available in the home, prior to that you only had films brought in by seaman which were watched in locked rooms at piss ups at football clubs and the like.

The VCR made what you watched in the privacy of your own home no ones business but your own
