The saga that led to Dr Smith’s downfall began when The Dominion Post revealed last week that ACC had mistakenly sent thousands of clients’ files to Ms Pullar.

Now that we have an MP resignation side-show [accusations of lies of meeting contents, humiliation, the word ‘friend’ et al] is anyone still interested as to why a file of thousands of cases existed in the form that it did and that it could be so easily accidently sent to Ms Pullar?
What was such a file for – one mention initially was that it was a monthly compilation – why and for who?
And indicative of the ‘culture’ why has one woman received apologies from nine ACC staff – three times the number of people that she was emphatically assured would ever have access to her file?

David Shearer has made it clear what standard he expects – as soon as a scandal blows up demand a immediate resignation.

No long winded justice process over years as for a few bomb throwers.
No waiting a day or two to make sure all the facts are known.
No giving the accused reasonable time to fully explain themselves.

Presumably this will apply to his own leadership. The odds are he will get a chance to demonstrate his commitment to instant justice.

I wonder if he will apply it to accusations of undermining leadership.

No, I’ve avoided it, but the thrill of the chase was apparent elsewhere as well. Political blood sport.

I hope that the journalists involved watch the tape again, and reflect…

I doubt it. The story of the moment overrules any emotional quotient.

And while it’s probably not necessary here I did feel sadness for the manner that other MPs have fallen from grace very publicly, like Hughes and Carter. We all make mistakes, some make big career changing ones, but it shouldn’t be an excuse for modern day stocks with maximum public humiliation. We don’t do that in our justice system.

I am no friend of Nicky Smith.
Indeed I regard his actions over the AGW/CC BS as bordering on malfeasance.
But, having looked at the actual content of the letters he wrote on the Pullar/ACC dispute, I cannot see evidence of a “crime” requiring resignation.

Is an MP or Minister supposed to become a political enunch upon election or annointment as a Minister?
If so, why do we bother electing them? Why don’t we simply ask the media wolf pack (Yes, W’tyon airp[ort yesterday was sickening!) to keep bureaucrats hoinest? Some will say that they/it does. But it is often with a pre-deetrmined slant.

Claims in relation to a breech of the BS Cabinet Manual are also BS. Does the Cabinet Manual (Has it ever been piublished in full?) have any standing in law?

Now, this morninmg, we have a red melon list twit, Hague, calling for an “Independent inquirty by the Attorney General”.
Chrissie Finlayson ” independent” ? On many issues, Yes. But on this ????.

Time to leave the whole unfortunate business to the Privacy Commissioner and the Police. Hang on. Can we have confidence in a Police inquiry? Given their tardiness over the Electoral Act allegations, I think not.

The wheels seem to be falling off National just when it seemed they were coming to grips with the malaise into which the nation had descended during a decade of Labour mis-management…Nick Smith sacked for misusing a departmental letterhead, McCully resiling over reform of Winston’s bloated Foreign Affairs Department, An activist judge trying to prevent waterside reform in Auckland, another putting the sale of the Crafar Farms in doubt, a weakening of resolve over local body reform. Not a good week at all.

Flipper, the first letter was in breach of the cabinet manual and John key has now admitted this.

Very poor management and leadership by JK on this occasion with a bad case of foot in mouth disease. Initialled claimed the first letter was not in breach of the cabinet manual without taking any advice on the matter. He should have kept his mouth shut and delayed comment until he had taken advice.

And I agree with Shearer that the second letter which JK used as the basis for the resignation would more innocuous than the first.

I hope John Key reflects on the piss poor way in which he has handled this matter and gifted Labour/Greens some free shots at himself.

They are probably the worst customer focused business in NZ.
Time for bloody good clean out from top down in that outfit.

Its and adversarial outfit that grabs your money and fights to retain it when you need the insurance most. Especially if you are self employed.

Seems like there is a housing crisis in Christchurch as owners of rental properties either use them themselves, or sell them. This is causing a rental stock shortage, and rent rises (11% in the last year) in Christchurch.

Interesting, because this is exactly the scenario that the Labour Party want to cause with their CGT. They want landlords “out of residential property” and “into the productive sector” (whatever that is).

I hope they’re paying attention to what the consequences are.

muslim immigrants than any other country because we embrace them and celebrate them here more than any other country.
Therefore they will be nice to us in return.

These appeasers think that the muslim immigrants into NZ will change to adopt our values and not eventually work
to force us to change to their values.

Of course the whole fundamental concept of islam is to force others to change to their values and beliefs.
And when they can. they will. This truth is axiomatic.
They do not want to live side by side peacefully with infidels.

Eventually it will not be any different here in New Zealand than anywhere else on earth.

That scene at Wellington airport was utterly disgraceful, and of course brought back painful memories for me. I was literally squirming in my chair when the poor bastard [whatever silliness he has done doesnt warrant that treatment] repeatedly appealed to them “as human beings” ..”on a human level”…to let him get to parliament and make his annoucment. It must have been blindlingly obvious to them that the man was close to cracking, and I am sure what they actually wanted was for him to have a complete meltdown, or better yet, sink to the floor with his hands over his head crying unconsolably. Is that REALLY what we want the fourth estate to do on our behalf?

As others have said, with Nicks level of experience, why the hell didnt he just keep going, as I did when they chased me through both Wellington and Christchurch airports? The answer must be that he was so close to losing it he couldn’t stop himself reacting.

Michael Parkin: you are a first class piece of vermin..in this digital age, one day your children will see this…do you really want your kids to see “this is what Daddy used to do in his work before you were born” ?

Nick Smith was obviously in a distressed state at Wellington airport and should not have engaged in any dialogue with the waiting press. In those situations you keep your chin up, your confidence complete and march straight through the gauntlet. Despite that Nick is paying the price for his indiscretions, a truly regretable situation from a well liked M.P. Nick had few options available to him as the scandal developed and his course of action was appropriate under the circumstances. No inquiry is required, the offending letters are in the public domain, the parties have been identified, and nothing more is to gained from drawling through any superflous accusations.

Bit of backwater geopolitic possibility:

The Nigerian finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and former Colombian finance minister, Jose Antonio Ocampo, are reportedly being put forward to replace Robert Zoellick who is retiring.

Ever since the World Bank was established at the Bretton Woods conference after the Second World War, an American has always led it. The understanding also upholds the traditional that a European always heads the International Monetary Fund, created in the wake of the same conference.

Leaders of developing economies have called for a break in the tradition but have so far failed to get enough support from other countries.

Sources told Reuters that Mr Okonjo-Iweala and Mr Ocampo have gathered support from key countries such as South Africa and Brazil.

The possibilities come in when you factor in SA now is considered part of the BRIC plus Russia and China really really want to give the US the fingers over Syria and this would be a perfect little up yours in that direction.

This was mooted months ago by the BRIC as a low flying kite, but I wonder if it will have any legs when it comes to actual votes and the attendant fallout once hot air turns into actual threats of ramifications from a very pissed off US of A or does one think Obama will just walk away from it in an election year?

But Syria is not trivial, not trivial at all, given its not actually about Syria, it’s about standing up, finally, to the naked, utterly blatant aggression from all the Arab Springs to date, and Russia and China aren’t about to fall over from that. Whether people know it or not (and don’t expect either Fox or TV One to be telling you or any of the other idiot MSM alphabets to be telling you), significant waves are currently falling on the geopolitical shores.

I’m happy that you realise the importance of getting the optimum utilisation out of sheep. So many people look at a tray of mutton chops in the butchery section of the supermarket & fail to appreciate the passion & dedication that country workers put into creating such exotic protein.

If you cast your eyes over the centrefold of Federated Farmers Meat & Wool publication for March you will never again look at a hindquarter of lamb in the same way.

I would take your meaning of ‘pact’ to mean, if I had to guess, that the US authorities have made a pact to ruin his business, before any trial has even commenced as to guilt or innocence, not that they will ever admit that.

The ‘pact’ of resistance, those effected by the shut down of megaupload in associated businesses or with associated interests. A few weeks ago in the Herald a reporter analysed what he considered Dotcom to be worth and arrived at point where he said it was far less than the billion Kim had claimed. I’m fairly certain the appraisal didn’t include the value of megaupload and I don’t think that’s generally appreciated by most. I expect to see more effort to have the business re-established. It’s an oppressive use of power which should be a concern to us all.

re Dotcom; If Key & co weren’t so enamored by the yankee head office the might engage there brains for a few seconds and figure out that there’s money to be made for NZ big time if they sort this out right.

Give him back his money with some conditions.
1. He invest lots with Morgan and Theil into the new undersea fibre to the US.
2. He installs giant servers in NZ
3. that he makes it all work again or a better version.

The Server company in the states was reaping$5k per day for storage on top of what else was made via the site. We could us a big slice of that.

But the useless socialists with the tin pot Yankee hats don’t
1. have this king of imagination
2. Don’t have the plain old gumption of good ol Kiwi’s to do this
3. Are generally afraid of the USA who is a bully and is wanting for friends in the world. How the two are compatible I am unable to see.

After all Dotcom has broken no Laws whereas the Govt. representatives in both USA and NZ have.
I’m long over pandering tothe Yanks.Despite many of them being just like you and I, their leadership and its apparatus is abusive of other people and countries and there are countless examples of that if anyone cares to look.

Perhaps MRKey should make Ms Pullar a Director of ACC. Seems she has been on their privacy case for a longtime. Looks like she has the necessary nonce and experience and we are always hearing about businesses needing Women Directors.
This lady looks like a good candidate to me.
Looks like a lot of bad overpaid managers in their.
But then we all know that anyway.
Time overdue for a clean out.
