Greece defauls in the last hour.

ISDA confirms Greece has defaulted, paving the way for CDS payouts that investors purchased to hedge against the risk of holding Greek sovereign debt. The vote was unanimous.

I wonder who’s going to the bank with their CDS bets?

Must come as a disappointment to some but Greece didn’t default

With euro zone ministers set to approve the €130 billion (NZ$172 billion) rescue, French President Nicolas Sarkozy declared the Greek problem had been settled – just as Germany said that any impression the crisis was over “would be a big mistake”.

In light of today’s EMEA Determinations Committee (the EMEA DC) unanimous decision in respect of the
potential Credit Event question relating to The Hellenic Republic (DC Issue 2012030901), the EMEA DC
has agreed to publish the following statement:

The EMEA DC resolved that a Restructuring Credit Event has occurred under Section 4.7 of the ISDA
2003 Credit Derivatives Definitions (as amended by the July 2009 Supplement) (the 2003 Definitions)
following the exercise by The Hellenic Republic of collective action clauses to amend the terms of Greek
law governed bonds issued by The Hellenic Republic (the Affected Bonds) such that the right of all
holders of the Affected Bonds to receive payments has been reduced.

The EMEA DC has resolved to hold an auction with respect to the settlement of standard credit default
swaps for which The Hellenic Republic is the reference entity. To maximise the range of obligations that
market participants may deliver in settlement of any such credit default swaps, the EMEA DC has agreed
to run an expedited auction process such that the auction itself will take place on March 19, 2012. In
light of this expedited auction process, market participants should submit any obligations that they
would like to include on the list of deliverable obligations to ISDA as soon as possible.

Current policies are also hitting Kiwi families in the pocket and the number of new immigrants should be slashed, says its author, a Massey University economist.

The research, by Greg Clydesdale, who teaches at the university’s department of management and international business in Auckland, drew a rapid response yesterday from the Government.

Immigration Minister David Cunliffe said attracting skilled migrants was “a must” for economic growth.

He said links drawn in the research between soaring house prices, mortgage rates and immigration were too simplistic.

Clydesdale said New Zealanders were not being given an accurate assessment of how immigration was affecting the economy and that most previous research on the subject resembled a “wish list”, with little hard data showing economic benefits.

The Government is approving more people for temporary work permits and permanent residency as it seeks to plug worker shortages.

About 51,000 people were approved for permanent New Zealand residence in last year.
Over 60 per cent came in under the skilled or business categories.

But Clydesdale said the arrival of more wealthy immigrants was inflating the housing market.

The hike in Reserve Bank interest rates from 7.25% to 7.5% last month –the first rise since December 2005 – was an attempt to slow the rampant housing market.

Clydesdale said immigration policies may also be partly responsible for the strength of the New Zealand dollar which is hurting exporters.

“Claims that immigrants improve the economy, introduce new technology and contribute to a growing business sector is misleading.

“There is often no economic evidence to support the claims made.”
He quoted Department of Labour figures that showed only 2% of business immigrants introduced new technology.

Many new arrivals under the business, investment and entrepreneurial categories bought existing businesses such as restaurants, cafes and takeaways, Clydesdale said.

“There is little new activity. There’s no added value, it’s just a change of ownership, “Clydesdale said.

There were also very real costs.

“An extra $3600 a year in your pocket, or more immigrants?

“The question is one New Zealanders should be considering because it sums up the relationship between rising mortgage interest rates and our current immigration policy,” Clydesdale said.

He estimated people with an average $160.000 fixed mortgage would be $3600 a year better off if rates had remained steady in the latest Reserve Bank rate hike.

“Off course, immigration is not the only force driving inflation, but we only need to get inflation down within a limited range to stop the interest rate increases,” Clydesdale said.
“Dramatically reducing immigration may keep inflation within that range, without the economic casualties.

“The Government’s current policy mix is putting real estate agents ahead of exporters.”

Cunliffe said he had seen the research, but disagreed, “House prices are a complex phenomenon which reflect the interaction of a wide variety of factors.” He said.

Those factors included interest rates, wage levels and population growth, of which migration was just one component.

“Net migration is itself a balancing factor between people leaving New Zealand and people arriving,” Cunliffe said.

According to Statistics New Zealand, during the 12 months to December 31, 2006, the population grew by 45,100 to 4,165,600,000 Cunliffe said.

The contribution of net migration to that was just 14,600 people.

“Businesses are still telling us that skills shortages are a constraint to their growth,” Cunliffe said.

Clydesdale’s previous effort was to say poor immigrants make the country poorer. He got criticised for that so now he is saying all immigrants make the country poorer. I guess that is how the USA got so impoverished.

Perhaps he should just blame climate change and be done with it.

As the Stuff article you linked to makes clear, the issue is whether an uncontrolled default takes place; the country defaulted in an orderly fashion many months ago when its creditors were forced to agree to take a haircut.

Just as a by-the-way, I think people should stop referring to investment losses in the 50% to 70% range (depending on how the calculations are run) as “haircuts”.

Clydedales commentary is fundamentally flawed in that he asserts:

Most of those businesses would have closed if immigrants had not bought them. Consequently those businesses continue to employ staff, purchase goods and services and pay tax thereby forefilling the basic criteria for allowing them to immigrate here.

The central theme in Clydesdales argument is a grizzle about how immigrants affect property prices. Immigrants do have an effect on property values but essentially supply and demand drive the value of homes in the marketplace. As reported previously on this blog there is a chronic shortage of housing in Auckland and that is the primary reason why homes are so expensive in Auckland.

Yes they have, and no some are not.

Some of the factors that suggest, to me at least, that Greece is in default include:
– The Greek government is unable to service it’s debt so forces bondholders to loose more than half their investment
– CDS’s (Credit Default Swaps) are triggered
– Fitch Ratings has downgrades Greece to “restricted default”, citing previous commentary that debt swap would constitute a sovereign credit event, then it’s not unreasonable to consider them as in default.

Still, you seem to know better.

Of 536 participants in six trials, 59% of people receiving LSD reported lower levels of alcohol misuse, compared to 38% of people who received a placebo.

Mind you, I think you’d know whether you’d dropped acid as opposed to taking a placebo, so the trial seems inherently flawed. LSD is not a subtle drug.

Maybe the “placebo” was coke. Who knows. Either way, it’s pretty clear LSD is a wonder drug and I’m thinking of heading back to uni, next year, just in case something happens. I think I’d make a pretty-durn popular Student Union President, what with my advocacy of free-for-all LSD experiments, my hatred of interest-free student loans and all things-Hulun and everything lefties say and do about anything, all the time. Talk about a platform. It would be a close vote, that’s for sure. I guarantee it. We could start churning out conservatives like no-body’s business. Think about it…

A wide range of people have turned out for the march, including students, wharfies from all over the country, unions and even Anglican priests.

Well both hell and Auckland I suppose.

They’re the same thing V2, it’s just the people who live in Auckland don’t want to admit it, but the rest of us know, don’t we. 🙂

Even though I’m an Anglican, I have to say, most of the clergy I’ve interacted with simply don’t get politics, they just don’t. It’s not their field, you see. Their field (as in, their calling and their life’s work) is alleviating suffering of all kinds through God’s word and they are therefore susceptible to whomever claims to do so in the political world.

But since while they live in the secular world they also spend most of their time thinking about how to apply spiritual teaching to aforesaid world, plus, as spiritual people do, they trust in the goodness of the human spirit; many of them, in my humble view, fail to apply the Lot lesson to the world, which is: just because someone says they are good, doesn’t mean they are. And the more subtle point is that even if the proclaimers genuinely think and believe they are good in themselves, that still doesn’t mean, they, in fact, will be a force for good in the world.

Many clergy of all Christian denominations I suspect, vote Gween and while I’m disappointed I’m not surprised they don’t see the Gweens for the aneathema I believe they in fact are. Regrettable, but seems to pan out, from observation.

BTW, as I understand it, every minute of every single day in Hell is torture and it never ends. Imagine that. Mary Baxter has a good book on it. Everyone, but everyone should read it. It’s on Amazon.

The Climate Change scam is creating a new set of OCD obsessions.

Concern about climate change usually centres on rising sea levels, melting ice caps and drought.

But an Australian study has found people with obsessive compulsive disorders (OCDs) can harbour very different worries – from fear of termites gobbling up their homes to concerns about thirsty cats.

The study, by University of Sydney researchers, is believed to be the first in the world to document how exposure to information and media reports about climate change can influence people with OCDs.

Dr Jones, and her co-researchers at University of Sydney’s Anxiety Disorders Clinic, studied 50 people with OCDs and found 14 (28 per cent) had concerns directly related to climate change.

The most common were about wasting water, electricity and gas, often leading to constant checking light switches, taps and stoves.

Other concerns were more out of the ordinary.

‘Two of the 14 participants were concerned that increased air temperatures would result in rapid evaporation of the water in their pet bowls,’ the study found.

This led them to constantly check their pets had enough water.

It said some reports about climate change could be ‘potentially alarming’.

The study was published in the March edition of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry.

Interesting link. There definitely seems to be some connection between OCD’s & the friends of Henny Penny who are certain that we will yet stew in our own juices……of course most of these fruitloops are positive that if only we tax ourselves back into the Stone Age we will be saved.

Problem is alot of clergy have bought into “social justice” big time. Whatever that is. It’s also pushed hard in Christian schools. As I see it social justice is simply another name for socialism. And now the next fad they are hitching their wagons to is environmental justice.

THE dispute between Australian transport giant Toll Group and its Los Angeles truck drivers has escalated with both sides accusing the other of threatening behaviour and a female employee fired for going to a McDonald’s restaurant.

Toll alleged supporters of the US Teamsters union, an Australian Transport Workers Union official and three Australian Toll employees were among a group that attempted “to physically force their way on to” Toll’s LA facility on Thursday, with some male members wearing masks from the Scream horror movie, Toll said.

THE Australian Taxation Office scored an important court victory in its Project Wickenby investigation, winning access to more than 1300 customer accounts in the tax haven of Vanuatu that are linked to Australia.

The Federal Court yesterday rejected ANZ’s submission that production of the data would be oppressive, breach confidentiality and violate secrecy provisions enacted in the Pacific tax haven.

Actually I shouldn’t be so glib about OCD. A close family member suffers from it, knows that he does, and goes though almost as much trauma trying to ‘protect’ us from his irrational behavious as he does from the obsessions themselves. Not nice.

Agreed, it’s a pretty awful affliction & as you say, people are aware of having the problem but can’t help themselves. The mother of a mate of mine had a form of it……constant washing of her hands.

Harmless in itself…….she was embarrassed about it but unable to change.

A new priest has just started working at the local catholic church when the head priest, Father David, announces that he is going on holiday for a week. Father David asks the new priest if he wouldn’t mind doing the confessions whilst he’s away. Concerned that he is inexperienced, Father David gives him the latest handbook on what to do in the confession box.

The new priest has been doing the job for five minutes when a young woman enters the box and says, “Forgive me father, for I have sinned – I have had feelings of a carnal nature toward the man who cuts our lawn.”
The priest looks to his handbook, finds the section on sexual desire and gardeners, and relays the appropriate penance to the woman. “You must do five hail Marys, and polish the church door brass.”

Later, a second woman confesses she has kissed the guy who came to fix the hot water cylinder. He looks in the handbook, finds the section on intimate liaisons with members of the plumbing trade and hands down a penance of ten hail Marys, fifty counts of the rosaries, and an afternoon trimming the church candles.

Much later a woman comes to the box and confesses that she has given the local policeman a blow-job. After a few minutes, the priest cannot find any mention of sucking a man’s cock in the handbook and wonders what to do. He sticks his head out of the box just as a choir boy is passing, and asks the lad, “Psst.. do you know what Father David usually gives for a blow-job?”

The young lad replies, “Two bags of Chippies and a Kit-Kat.”

Just watched the TVNZ On Demand TV One report re: the Akld port strike.

I don’t think I’ll ever visit TVNZ ever again. Ever. I haven’t seen it at all for quite a few years now. But this, crikey.

TVNZ is dead, to me, forever. It’s just too fucking bad, period. It’s so bad, I fear I’d get explosive diarrhea if I ever watch it again.

Do these fools even know what “news” or “journalism” even is?

Don’t answer.

Let’s just sell it to the Australians, it’s certainly doing us no good at all. Let them pay for it. I just don’t care, anymore.

I wonder how many times members of the clergy march like they did today. To me a relevant message in times that are unsettled.

It’s not very common is it. Except when the selfish evil and hated tories are in power. It seems to happen a bit more often then, for some reason. Odd really, when you think of the relative destruction wrought but then, perceiving the lefty destruction does take an understanding of the depths to which a human soul can sink whilst appearing on the surface to be a bit like David Hasselhoff, and who doesn’t like David Hasselhoff? (Is probably the calculation running in their heads as they march and chant, et al…)
